Downtowns
When you speak of downtowns, do you mean the cultural heart of city, or a general retail shopping center?
I believe that the difference between a real community and just sprawl is the existence of a city center, the point on the map if you will. The ingredients of such an entity include:
1- Iconic symbols such as a riverfront, city square, or identifiable structures to say this is the focal point of the city.
2-City and other governmental buildings to legitimatize the area as the city
