Subject: What book are you reading right now?

Written By: Fred on 07/30/06 at 6:25 pm

Well not at this exact moment but you get the idea.

I'm reading Enemy At The Gates: The Battle For Stalingrad by William Craig. Way better than the movie.  ;) The movie was good though. I don't know if I prefer non-fiction, but I've been reading it quite often these days.

I'm slowly working my way through Sue Grafton's series (so far, I've read "N" & "P").

I've just finished "The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets"  (or something like that) and am waiting for something to turn up which I fancy reading.  Keep toying with the idea of reading hubby's John le Carre collection but I'm not sure if I'll enjoy it.

I am also reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to my daughter but at three or four pages a night it is slow going!

I would rather read a good comedy book than the book I mentioned above.

As per my usual style, I am currently reading 2 books.

The book I am spending most of my time reading at the moment is Ruled Britannia, by Harry Turtledove.  It is about an alternate past, where the Spanism Armada was successful in it's invasion of England.  It is set in 1597, and William Shakespear is approached to write a play comparing the Spanish occupation with the Roman occupation of 1500 years before, and the heronie of the play being Boudica.

The other book is Dune: House Corrino by Brian Herbert.  This is the 9th in the series, and is one that I take my time reading.  I will frequently read 2-3 books while I am working on a Dune book, since they are simply to involved to take in a single sitting.

Oh, and last weekend I bought and read "Red Son", a graphic novel in which the baby Kal-El landed in a small collective in the Ukraine instead of Kansas.  So instead of standing for "Truth, Justice, and the American Way", Superman now stands for "Stalin, Socialism, and the International expansion of the Warsaw Pact."  It was really a great book, and one I would recommend to anybody who enjoys either Superman, or alternate history.

Have you ever read Black Wind by F. Paul Wilson?  It was one of the best books I've ever read.  I liked Cussler's earlier novels circa 1970s and 80s, but I enjoyed Sahara.

Black Wind by F. Paul Wilson is a really interesting adventure story about WW II. It gave me a new perspective about Japan, and I learned things about the U.S. I never imagined.

I'm half way through 3 fiction books at present:

Killing the Shadows - Val McDermid (I love reading crime fiction - and usually Val's work is very gory, but this book isn't so much. I've been half way through this book for so long now...I vow to finish it this Summer!!)
Child Star - Matt Thorne (Just started reading this, am about 80 pages in, but couldn't take it on holiday as t'was a library book, so I started reading...)
A Long Way Down - Nick Hornby (I got the hard-back for my b'day and starting reading it in Prague last week, over half way through, so far so good. I very much like Hornby's style.)

As per my style, I have a total of 3 books going right now:
I'm on chapter 4 in re-reading my favorite, Tom Clancy's Clear And Present Danger, which I do every summer.
Roughly 10 chapters into Margaret Truman's Murder At Union Station, I've read about 12 of her Capital Crimes books.
And I'm about 30 pages from finishing Jimmy Buffett's Where Is Joe Merchant? His stories are as fun as his songs.

Your Pal,
Doc
