God bless youtube. I have just discovered the music videos and spent a blissful afternoon watching lots of 80's glam/sleaze metal. Before I used to just follow links people sent me and that was it.

I was a huge fan of the Ren & Stimpy show when it was on Nick and one of my favorite little vignettes was for this fake toy called "Log".  Well, here's one of the "commercials" for it.

I've spent my YouTube time so far watching my favorite '80s videos that I thought I'd never see again---and even videos for some songs I loved, but never got to see back then.  I saved a whole bunch in my "favorites" folder, but the problem is if the video gets removed fro YouTube, you can no longer access it in your "favorites" folder either.  Anybody know how to download the video itself and not just save the link?

There's a lot more stuff I want to search for on YouTube besides '80s videos.  Any recommendations?

Well, just about anything. I was able to find some interior videos of Carolina Circle Mall. They even have a few old intermission films from the drive-in theaters.

Bookmark this in your favourites (everything that is in bold):   javascript:document.location='http://keepvid.com/lite/bookmarklet/?url='+escape(window.location);

When you are watching a video on youtube, open that book mark while the video plays, then follow the instructions that appear on the forthcoming page that appears.  Then once you've saved the video as an FLV file, simply get a program that can convert FLV files to other formats like WMV or MPEG and voila! 8)

I was taking a look at this yesterday and the first video that turned up for viewing was Islamic 'Female Suicide Bomber'  which must have been filmed by one of the Military.  The 23 year old had been segregated into a courtyard by herself and can be seen fumbling with the device - getting increasing frustrated when she cannot set it off.
In my morbid curiosity I hung around for nearly 10 minutes to see the results - the bomb was eventually detonated by the bomb squad before she could blow herself up - pity

i think i started off with daily show segments, lots of band footage (first heavy metal, then like old pink floyd -- like REALLY old, saucerful of secrets stuff, there's some amazing rarities!), beatles quasi-videos (they called em something else back then), then pranks, lots and lots of goofy pranks. scare tactics skits. then girls making out. then i abruptly and inexplicably lost interest in that and watched colbert report outtakes for a while. then i finally had one of those maybe-you-have-a-problem moments when i realized i was watching people's cute cat videos.

anybody ever stumble across lonelygirl15 and daniel? they're like a youtube phenomenon, everybody's trying to figure out if they're a hoax -- which is to say, are they really a blog or some kind of professional thing? a lot of their stuff comes off very professionally edited. "proving science wrong!"

I know --you'd almost feel sorry for her.I mean, what is she going to go back to?If she's released, she'll just be made to try again.or she'll have to "retire",become one of 3 wives and have like 10 kids, and always have to stay inside or wear a veil.

People send me tons and tons of links...like, hourly.
I never really get thru the first few seconds (exepting the one where the people saw the leprachaun...priceless!)

I have gone to the site, thinking i'll look up some things but my mind goes blank.  There is a site I like called "internet archive" shich has  all the old 50s health movies, tons of foreign stuff and great wierd music.  I have exhausted that one.  But I really don't go in for home made movies at all and video bloggers too...so besides music video that I can't save, what else can I do?

I'm not putting it down.  I am one of those folks that uses the internet merely for email and this site.  So I guess I'm asking what else is in it for me?

I never really get thru the first few seconds (exepting the one where the people saw the leprachaun...priceless!)

I have gone to the site, thinking i'll look up some things but my mind goes blank.  There is a site I like called "internet archive" shich has  all the old 50s health movies, tons of foreign stuff and great wierd music.  I have exhausted that one.  But I really don't go in for home made movies at all and video bloggers too...so besides music video that I can't save, what else can I do?

I'm not putting it down.  I am one of those folks that uses the internet merely for email and this site.  So I guess I'm asking what else is in it for me?
yeah, i kinda stopped sending links days ago, you'll notice, because of that snowball effect. i think i mighta sent maria a couple stragglers from my recent charlie brown tear.

now, i'da thought you'd be all about the apollo program footage and the space shuttle and all that.

Youtube is INSANELY addictive.  It's strange how everyone in the world is getting addicted around the same time.  Youtube has been around for a while now, but recently I've spent a lot of time on it.  Watching everything, music videos, old commerials, clips from TV shows and movies, interviews with stars, bloopers, and just watching real world people doing crazy things on camera.  This may be the most addictive technology humans have ever invented, far more addictive then straight up TV.

This Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial from the 80s is one of my favorites:

I spent a good part of yesterday YouTube-ing.  Addictive as hell...

The best thing I found yesterday wasn't a music video or a lost inteview with a rock star or an old TV intro.  It was a simple, ten second station ID from 1980 that rings in my head to this day...go ;)...

as long as we're mixing it up, this is something i bookmarked a while ago, appears to be iraqi insurgent propaganda. not very explicit or violent, but very very challenging because it's so well done and disturbing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MCXTiyGW1Y

if you think about this in a war sense, in terms of clausewitz's cliche of "know your enemy," the people who made this know the west very well and are thinking hard about their rhetoric, and the people in the west who responded -- by blathering about "camel humpers" and saying "this video is bs, end of discussion" -- obviously don't know anything about the middle east and are deliberately trying NOT to think. the pro-war people should think about that, if you want to win, you're gonna need to start thinking.

WHY THERE WAS NO OBESITY EPIDEMIC AMONG AMERICAN CHILDREN IN THE 1970'S.

It's 6:00 on a Saturday evening in 1977. (It's nice outside.)

You're 6 years old.

One television in your house.

Four channels.

Your dad has the remote.

You have 2 choices:

1.) Go outside and play.

2.) Stay inside and watch this:

that's kinda... cool, actually.

i seem to remember on a typical nice saturday morning i'd get up as though i had an eighty-mile commute to work, and then watch a test pattern impatiently for like two hours, and then there'd be christian programming and local news buttass early, like 5 am, and then finally the cartoons would kick in about 8:30 and would rock out until about 1 in the afternoon, at which point lameass grown up crap would come on and i'd finally get around to calling up my friends and arranging the important work of whacking each other upside the backyard with sticks.

good times! i wanna go back!

I don't think the audience was brainwashed as much as they were coked to the freakin' gills just like Chuckie Baby. You have to admit, it would have been a blast to be in the studio audience during a taping of the Gong Show back in 1978.

Wow, that's really neat! I've heard of the Mellotron, and heard it used on some classic 60's and 70's albums, but I've never actually seen one in use.

I've heard that these things were a roadie's nightmare. Not only were they heavy and cumbersome, but I guess the electronic guts inside were so delicate that it was nearly impossible to keep one running properly throughout a whole concert tour.

it was ALL moving parts. like 88 rotors for 88 wound tapes, it's funny how they called it a "computer..." all that tape was stretched out like a parchment, the least bit of change in humidity would shrink or expand the tape and it would get all messed up. but the sound was one of a kind, a synthesizer just can't do it. they'll tell you it can, but they're wrong. just listen.

that mellotron setup, i'm guessing, in the demo was idealized, it was like for a one-man band type scenario. live they just set it up for the same sound all up and down the keyboard because they had bass, drums, guitar and whatnot anyway.

i actually hadn't heard of any of those folks except lonelygirl15 and daniel. some late night i was really trolling the underbelly of youtube and stumbled on them, sorta alternately cute and also vaguely insufferable. i actually got in some fleeting argument with lonelygirl15 after watching some stupid video of theirs with fighting sock puppets. i kinda like their "proving science wrong" thing though.

what i like about them is there's a conspiracy theory about how they're actually a professional site with writers and editors masquerading as a couple of people in a room.

I should be working, but I've been watching the No. 1 video over and over trying to figure out if it's acting or for real, deserves an Oscar if it's acting! Any opinions? ::)

Yeah?  A guy f*cking a corpse is "taboo", but that doesn't mean watching a video of it will make it funny.

Watching people run for their lives as two skyscrapers fall to the ground is not funny in any way, shape or form.  Although I'm not the least bit surprised you find something like that even mildly amusing.

How many times have you seen 9/11 footage in the past five years?

Around the time of 9/11 and for a few months afterward, quite a bit obviously.  However after about November of that year, I quit watching it.  It was too sad and heartwrenching and infuriating.  On the anniversaries, they show some footage and I catch little bits of it here and there, but I can honestly say that I haven't seen it and watched it as many times as quite a few others have.  I don't get kicks out of seeing stuff like that over and over again.

For what purpose do media outlets keep broadcasting it?

The same reason Jerry Springer and Ron Popeil are famous....because at least 1 person out there will watch it.  That and they want to scare people I'm sure, but I don't buy into that crap and most intelligent people don't either.

I look at it more as an editorial on the media exploitation of 9/11.  Somehow it's OK for FOX News to use 9/11 imagery with their "fear and menace" music to manipulate your emotions, but set the Benny Hill theme to it and it's, "Oh, oh, how DARE you!"

On the anniversary of 9/11, I expect the footage to be accompanied by somber music, but not music that is frightening.  Any other day of the year, I don't want music playing in the background.  It's not the Emmys.  I don't know if you were referring specifically to me, but that doesn't "influence my emotions".  That footage would be just as powerful to me if it were silent in the background.  Putting Benny Hill music in the background doesn't show reverance or respect, it's making a mockery out of something that shouldn't be mocked.  You can think that the government was involved, you can say that we let it happen by not going after Bin Laden sooner, but to make a joke of those peoples' death is really disgusting.  IMO, that's what that video does.  They don't deserve that anymore than any other murder victim does.

Well, see here, TV networks, you guys replayed these images until they became hackneyed and people became desensitized, so maybe the guy with the Benny Hill theme did us a favor by revealing the true horror of the images via the "inappropriate" music!  Juxtaposition is an effective device.

I agree, but not everyone became or will become desensitized to it.  I haven't.  Show me that footage 40 years from now and I'll still get shivers up my spine.  We see violence every day on the news and in movies and on TV, but something you don't see everyday, like the footage from 9/11, can have a powerful impact on you when you do see it again.  I don't know where you got the idea that all TV does is show the footage over and over again, but I watch a good chunk of Fox News and CNN and MSNBC and C-Span and all those other channels and I don't see it all the time.  When you are watching these stations that they keep showing it over and over again?

Do you think I find the deaths themselves funny?  Of course you don't!

I don't know what you do or do not find funny.  I would hope something like this doesn't inspire you to break out into giggle fits.

Correct.  The crew was reacting to the F-14 flying by them -- they hadn't heard the explosion yet.  Also correct that the video wasn't shot from the carrier.  It was shot from a nearby support ship.

The moral of the story, kids, is that when you're somewhere near/past supersonic, don't just yank on the stick to make a hard turn. Just because the software will let you try, doesn't make it a good idea.  (I don't have a need to know when/if we finally added "no, really, I don't care if the pilot's got 3 missiles on his six and is praying to every God that was ever worshipped for a sharper turn, if you see this control input at this airspeed at this angle of attack, disregard the control input and keep the aircraft in one piece" code to our fighters.)

Maintenance requirements that they were, and as right as their decommissiong was from a strategic viewpoint was... the F-14 is one hell of a beautiful aircraft, and if I had a billion dollars, I'd find a way to buy one for my personal use.

YouTube has become my new best friend.  My roommates and I just moved into our apartment and have next to NO furniture, which includes a TV.  We have our computers though, luckily, so we get news, TV shows, and videos all off YouTube.  You can find just about ANYTHING on that.  It's sooo great.

Grease : You're the one that i want-

Roommates and I watched "Walk the Line" last night.  It was a pain to get up and click for the next part, but hey at least we watched it and it was free.  Bless YouTube!

i upload a bunch of stuff that's ostensibly copyrighted. i try not to make it too good so as to draw too much attention to myself but i figure it's only a matter of time before i get busted.

i figure if you make it short, like two, three minutes, they shouldn't complain cuz it's free advertising! plus i try to only stick with obscure stuff you can't get on dvd. still, i figure the boom'll fall sooner or later.

This clip confirms once and for all the awesomeness of YouTube.  ;D ;D ;D

This is from an obscure 1980 sketch-comedy film (along the lines of Kentucky Fried Movie) called "Loose Shoes."  I bought it off Amazon last year and, to be honest, most of the movie sucked, but this was the very last sketch in the movie and it made the purchase totally worthwhile.

It takes a little while to get off the ground, but once you hear the chorus I swear you'll be singing it for the next several days.  ;)

It's a bit of a process, but basically it involved going to a site like this one: http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php. Entering the url of the youtube page with the video on it, clicking the download button that will show up eventually, making the extension of the video .flv like it says. Then you must convert the .flv file to an ipod or psp compatible mpeg4 file, you'll have to search around for a program that will do it for you.

Somebody posted rare jazz clips my friend Sam had sought for decades.  He was soooo frustrated because he couldn't save them to his hard drive.  I don't know if they're still up.

What happened with jazz is there was a fair amount of footage taken of guys like Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ella Fitzgerald, but the people who own the footage are extremely stingy about playback rights.  Sam, archivist himself, even had the connections to find these archivists in places like Greenwich Village.  He wanted to show some of this footage on his community cable show.  All non-commercial.  They were like, "No, p*ss off!"

You'll notice when you see any footage of old jazz greats there's always narration over it, "Here is Duke Ellington at the ABC in year Y playing with XYZ..."  Sam wanted to give jazz fans the chance to see this stuff uninterrupted, and god knows jazz fans want to see it.

There are people out there swifter, sneakier, and better connected than Sam, and they were the ones who posted this material on YouTube...but then Sam couldn't swipe it for himself!  Aaaarghhh!

XD I've heard his cover of a Killers song, "Mr. Brightside."

It's ridiculous.

I've wasted entire afternoons having big Youtube geekfests.  I mostly just watch old commercials and station IDs and stuff like that.  I hardly ever click links that other people post.  I've had enough of Rick Astley. XD  Plus, I don't like stopping everything I'm currently doing to watch a video.  Maybe that's why I've fallen behind on internet memes, lol.

The very last part of this video is just stupid but I like the agenda behind this "Anti-Dear Sister" video.  Too bad I can't post a link for the original "Dear sister" video as it has been buried in the youtube jungle of teenagers feeling the need to remake every SNL digital short.

Sublime, was great though their fame was shortlived due to Brad's OD.  Their entire first album is amazing!!!!!

Good sound effects during the kicking and punching scenes. LOL.

Also, has a good message that popped collars and baseball hats are bad.  Hahaha.
