Subject: =MAD MAX IV=

It was more than just getting started, this film already went into pre-production.  Greenlit with a 104 million dollar budget, crews were hired, sets were being built, the location being Nambia.  Cast was being put together, Gibson was signed along with Miller...

Then trouble in the middle east struck, security problems arose with the location and shooting this film there and the production was shut down.  Gibson went on to do Passion of the Christ, Miller on to Happy Feet.  Obviously Fury Road won't happen until Miller is done with his penguin epic, and of course Gibson is free again...

It's painful knowing this film was so close to being shot and had to be shut down.  I'm only hoping they pick up where they left off sooner or later...

In general, Mad Max (with the original voice acting) is my favorite.  I was an absolute Mad Max freak in my mid teens.  I love the other two, but they weren't breaking the ground that Mad Max  was.  The "blandness" of that movie is what makes it so powerful.  Everyday life with horrific punctuations.  I still shiver for Goose (and yes, I do think of The Night Rider  when I look to the night sky.  I'm actually not kidding...)

Gibson's probably out.  I'm picturing either Russel Crowe or Hugh Jackman in the role of Max Rockatansky groove ;) on all...

It's gotta be Gibson in the lead role.  No one else can play Mad Max

Yeah, I love the original "Mad Max," and "The Road Warrior," but "Thunderdome" was a drag. Where is the story supposed to after "Thunderdome," anyway?
He should be making the "Passion" sequel.  Why not?  The screenplay was all set to go 2000 years ago!
:D

Totally agree.  It wouldn't be Mad Max without him.  On the other hand, Hugh Jackman wouldn't be a bad choice.

hell, i could see russell crowe doing it. you could even get around it by having MM's character disappear and have the movie be about russell crowe's character looking for him and encountering lots of troubles along the way.

anyway, to my mind thunderdome kinda sucked so i doubt i'd bother to see a fourth one. i sorta thought the franchise had played out. sounds like the story of trying and failing to make the movie would make a pretty good movie though...

Well, that's what I liked abut the first two, they were just shy of MST3K material, especially the MM with the overdubbed American accent.  An American cop in the Aussie Outback?  Huh?
;D

everyone around here probably just assumed it was shot somewhere in the american southwest. that's where all that apocalyptic stuff was shot back in those days anyhow.

the first one, yeah, was real low-budget gritty, i always liked it best. i love its whole pre-apocalyptic thing; it's like the world's about to end but everyone likes to pretend everything's still fine. it's kinda unique that way, the first mad max, i'm not sure i've seen another movie with quite the same groove to it.

some might say we're sorta living that now.

The American Southwest would be a perfect place to shoot a post-apocalyptic picture.  Why?  Because the apocalypse really is coming to the Southwest.  If Americans are so smart, why is the fastest growing area from Tucson to Reno, where there IS NO WATER!  When the piped-in petroleum and water dries up, the Southwest economy will collapse and the millions will migrate. Phoenix and Las Vegas will be ghost towns in fifty years, the first real American ruins.  The area will return to what it was 100 years ago, a habitat for tough-as-nails desert rats, miners, and outlaws.  Any gambling in LV will not take place in the casinos which will be crumbling palaces left to the elements, but in the same dusty little saloons as the 1890s.  What shall become of the military proving grounds?  What about the defense department's secret testing labs?  Will the brutish dictatorship of five decades from now still occupy them?  Forget Nambia!  Nevada is the place to shoot MMIV!  The original "Road Warrior" was set after a nuclear apocalypse.  The next "Road Warrior" can be set after an ecological apocalypse.  Imagine the chase scenes along the crumbling interstates, and the shoot-outs in the burnt-out casinos!

That was my idea for a Mad Max IV many years ago... Someone seeking the legend of the Road Warrior, and in the end either finding just a grave, or a crochety old man living in a cave.

Or he could pull a Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven  or a John Wayne in True Grit  (both those men were in their early 60s in those roles) and do the whole "over-the-hill-hero-called-on-once-more" type deal...

I love the originals and I firmly believe there are more Max tales to be told, but I think the story has been left for too long.  Heck, most of the members here have probably never even heard of Mad Max...

  Then..?  Ate.  It.  Up...
Now..?  A little artsy and approaching a comedy, IMO...

  groove ;) on...

i once had what i can humbly describe as the BEST MOVIE IDEA EVER.

okay, so the idea is, the war of the worlds radio hoax that happened in the 1930s? IT REALLY HAPPENED! well, sort of. and the government (which in the movies is benevolent and good and wants to protect us, not like in real life -- that's why i love the movies) managed to suppress it somehow and captured one of the martian machines at whatsver's grove, new jersey, right? so when the movie starts the martians start invading and they have even better machines but it turns out the government has secretly been building replicas based on the old machines.

then, based on that premise, everything starts getting blowed up real good.

Hey if they can do another Rocky and Rambo. So why not another Mad Max.
