Subject: e Coili alert: Throw Away that Bagged Spinach!

Written By: LyricBoy on 09/15/06 at 7:06 am

Hey everybody,

I just saw on TV that the FDA is recommending that you throw away any of that "spinach in a bag" that they sell at the grocery stores.

There is a nasty outbreak of e Coli nationwide traced to bagged spinach, and they have not been able to narrow it down to any particular brand.  Hopefully they will ID the source soon.

e Coli is nasty stuff... :-\\

I love fresh spinach and this won't stop me from eating it.  Either we grow our own in the backyard, or we buy it....but either way, it gets washed thoroughly before it's eaten.

They said on one broadcast that cooking doesn't kill the E coli.  Something is fishy about all this.  If boiling doesn't kill it washing surely won't, what's this all about?

I would think boiling would kill E Coli; IIRC, hamburgers are supposed to reach at least 165*F in the center to kill it.

Apparently, the FDA agrees: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/ecoli.txt

"A ground beef dish will be safely cooked when it reaches an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The ground beef should not be pink in the center, and the juices should run clear. All leftovers should be reheated to 165 F."

My guess is that whoever said "dont cook it either" figures that there is a fairly large percentage of the public who does not know how to cook in a sanitary maner and would barely warm the stuff up.

Also, if you are handling e Coli contaminated veggies or meat, you have to be scrupulously clean.  Wash your hands immediately after handling the stuff.  Wash off and disinfect the cutting board, sink, knives, or other implements/surfaces that come in contact with the stuff.

So as a "general advisory" I would tend to agree with the "don't even cook it" strategy.  But if somebody really knows what they are doing, cooking is safe.

I'll try my best to stay away from spinach (bagged spinach especially) for the time being. It's going to be tough, however.

The reason that cooking spinach does not kill e coli is that you have to boil something for at least 5 minutes to have any effect.  Spinach is generally only cooked for a minute or two in very little water so the germs aren't killed.  Of course you could always wash it in Domestos!  :D

I boil/steam most of my veggies until they are mush. It's been a while since I did spinach, but I'm sure it took longer than 2 minutes to steam it.

My guess on why so much spinach has been contaminted w/o finding a source is the compost used to fertilize the fields wasn't made correctly, and therefore had harmful bacteria still left inside.

Time will tell....

I'm sick and tired of my favorite greasy fastfood getting nailed!  It's high time when of those super-good-for-you leafy green vegetables gets it's bacterial comeuppance!

I'll stick with the canned spinach. I know they removed some of the nutrients, but they also probably removed the viruses, too.
