Subject: The Sopranos On A&E

Written By: Call Me Crazy on 03/15/07 at 4:03 pm

I started watching this series about a month ago on A&E and I can't help but wonder what i've missed out on due to editing, chopping, whacking scenes taken out, I never saw the origionals but for now, it's a great show.

Who else likes The Sopranos and why?

I love the Sopranos.  Not sure why...I just love mob movies and such.  My family is Italian and my dad was one of those guys who had to act tough all the time...maybe it just feels familiar.  And of course my family isn't in the mob.

Yes it is!

And oddly enough, it looks just like an actual episode of the show, on A&E!

;D

I really love the Sopranos and can't wait for it to start back up again.  I think the main thing I like about the show is all of the hilarious characters.  For a dark mob drama, there are some dang funny moments.  Paulie Walnuts is my favorite, and I also have a soft spot for Big Pussy.

The "actual" show on HBO has a lot of bad language, violence and nudity - I'm sure that's what has been cut out, CMC.

In Canada, they also broadcast The Sopranos on CTV, and it is heavily edited.  It's just not the same.  What's the Sopranos without all the foul language and violence?

I'm not normally a fan of shows where just about every other word is the 'F' word...but that one has some very interesting storylines...

I can't watch edited and watered-down shows.  I loved Sex and the City and watched it religiously when it was HBO, but the minute it went to TBS, I didn't watch it.  Take out half the show, what's the point in watching?

Well, as a huge Sopranos fan, I can say that considering the amount of material on the show that would be considered offensive for regular TV or basic cable, A&E had done a fine job of editing the show and not losing much in the translation…
Yes, I will admit some of the edge of the show is softened or lost somewhat, but there is almost no loss of the storyline or plot.

But in my thinking we’re only talking of a loss of some brutal murder close up scenes here, and some brief frontal nudity there, nothing we haven’t seen before by this day and age. And considering the dregs of reality shows and other junk on TV, I’d rather watch a well-written (but edited) rerun of a Sopranos episode on A&E over that other stuff any time.

You really have to give props to David Chase as its evident that his writing stands up to the rigors of heavy editing for regular TV/cable and still, the Sopranos come off as one of the better shows on TV.

If anything, watching the show on A&E should prompt those who haven’t seen the show in its entirety to go out and rent the DVD sets. The benefit being in seeing the drastic contrast in showing Tony’s conflict of his brutal “family business” with his “family” life on the original HBO series that is somewhat less powerful on the A&E version...

I've never seen it and yet, the final episode is being filmed in an old-fashioned ice cream parlor three blocks from my house that I've frequented fairly regularly since I was what, two years old?

Eh, I don't think that's true. I thought the episodes they show on CTV are the original, completely unedited. That's what CTV always claims. I've seen plenty  of foul language and nudity in the CTV episodes, so I think they haven't had anything taken out.

Never watched "The Sopranos" regularly, but I liked the episodes I saw.
You don't have to use profanity or nudity to make a good screenplay/teleplay.  However, when the script was designed to include copious bad words and T&A, it loses a lot of punch when it's expurgated for regular TV.  I wouldn't bother watching Sopranos on A&E.

I'd never seen them, I only assumed.  I didn't think CTV could show unedited stuff like that.  But then again, CITY-TV shows porn films after midnight, so anything is possible ;D

Is there such a thing? lol

I usually just tune into City-TV and Showcase late at night.  The stuff on there would make a priest jump off a building ;D
