Subject: Meaning of lyric in Sheryl Crow song

Written By: RobertK on 05/31/07 at 8:22 pm

In the Sheryl Crow song "Soak Up The Sun", the last line is "... Got my 45 on so I can rock on."  I realize that there are at least three interpretations for the meaning of "45".  Which do you think it is?

It could mean Colt 45 the brand of beer.  She has been known to mention beer in her songs.

I would guess 45 RPM

Most likely an RPM, as in record (the second choice). However, there is a chance that it might refer to SPF (sunscreen), since one can have that on their body. But what would that have to do with "rocking on"?

I always thought SPF sunscreen since the song in itself is called "Soak Up The Sun".  I always thought when she said "rock on" that it was more figuratively.  Like, "Got my 45 on so I can keep going."

I think she means all of them!  She's got the good tunes on, the sunscreen, the handgun  ::), and she's ready for whatever comes her way. :D

There are a lot of good comments here. Thanks everyone!  My interpretation is the 45 RPM record.  However, I think this lyric works like an aural Rorschach test.  Maybe there is no one "right" answer.

The line is about SPF 45 sunscreen.

There's a discussion about this topic on the message board of Sheryl Crow's official web site, and according to the replies, Sheryl herself has said that '45' refers to sunscreen. Just read this:

I thought about that too.
I was going to be annoyed if it was a gun cuz i am really really tired of her 'bad girl' lyrics when she is essentially so pop.
i like the idea off sunscreen. makes sense.
and a 45 rpm?  well...she only has one?

Considering the lyrics of the song I say she's talking gun.  It is a bit of an angry song, and if she was talking about sunscreen she would say "Got 45 on", and if it was a record she would say "Got a 45 on" (please, what is she doing carrying around her phonograph), not "Got my 45 on".  I think her explanation is a bit coy, playing the innocent/bad girl image.

Oh...right. Why didn't I think of that?

Of course...since the title has everything to do with the sun, the "45" in the last line would most likely refer to sunscreen.

Speaking of Sheryl Crow lyrics, what does she mean in that other song when she sings "Every day is a winding road... every day is infanticide... I get a little bit closer to feelin' fine"  ???

I think "every day is infanticide" is actually "Every day is a faded sign".

As for the meaning, I think it means that as we travel through life, we won't always be able to tell what's up ahead, but in the end we'll be okay.

I'm pretty sure "faded sign" is correct.

While we're on the subject...how about the title of her 1998 hit "My Favourite Mistake"...what exactly does that mean? ???

I took it to mean that, even though my relationship with you turn out to be a bust, YOU are the one I had the most fun with (or enjoyed being in the relationship with most), so your were my favorite mistake.  ;D  Had a few of those relationships myself, even though I DID have alot of fun.  ;)

I'm gonna soak up the sun
Got my 45 on
So I can rock on.

Interpreting a song from the lyrics only, as the title of the song is Soak Up the Sun, it has to be suncream on.

Sheryl Crow was born Sheryl Suzanne Crow on February 11, 1962 and that makes her age 45.

Well, the lyrics of the song seem to be about a relationship that she's in which has many aspects that she dislikes but which still has some parts that make her happy.

Yes, the song became a hit right around the time she turned 40. It was one of the most overplayed songs of 2002...which I find it hard to believe was 5 years ago already. :o
