Subject: How different will the late 2000s be? predictions

Written By: popking on 07/06/07 at 1:17 pm

Does anyone think 2007-2009 will be any different than the peak 00s (2003-05/06). Usually in the late part of a decade fads and trends that will peak in the next decade start to appear on the radar, however unnoticable they may be. NOTE: this is different than the "what will the 2010s be like?" article as its more short term insight.

Personally I think some of the trends that were big in the early and mid 2000s such as crunk music and emo will start to decline, and a new, more significant genre of rock music will start to ascend as a backlash to emo. It could possibly be metal, i think more likely a hybrid genre though, maybe a more hard edge metal/grunge sound, or perhaps a mixing together to create something totally new.

Glam Rap will continue to fade out significantly by early to mid 2009 (its actually happening already) as a more social conscious rap style, not seen since the 90s, starts to pick up steam. None of these new styles of music will rise to prominence until into the next decade.

Pop music will eventually place more of an emphasis on vocals and choreography alike the early 90s. Hip Hop will continue to influence that genre, although again, less glam and excessive and more of an emphasis on good beats.

YouTube will remain popular, if not increase in popularity as its more of a mid-2006 current trend. Myspace will remain prominent despite the rise of other social networks like Facebook. The iPhone will mark the start of mp3 players will slowly give way to cellphones as the primary music listening device, once the storage and battery life increases, and the prices start to go down.

File sharing will become legal by 2008. People will play a flat fee and download as much as they can handle. Advertising will generate the profit needs of the record labels and artists. The record industry's massive crisis will be over, and the role of the record label will change as more of a promotion and managing vehicle instead of complete and total control. More money coming to the record companies will mean more acts getting signed and the role of the internet will continue to diversify the popular music scene.

In terms of celebrities, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, both of which are really starting to fade in 2007, will continue to be less and less a media story. Late-2008 may well be the last the media focuses on them, outside their growing legal troubles.  By the end of the decade a new breed of stars will enter the public sphere. These stars will likely make more contributions to society as a cultural backlash against the excessive wave of "famous for being famous" starlets from the mid 2000s.

Reality TV which is already exhausted as of 2007 will continue to become out of style, a new wave traditional entertainment will rise. Classic sitcoms will emerge again after a drought of creativity and moneteny in the 2000s. Shows like 24 and House will continue to be popular. Game shows in the style of Deal or No Deal will continue to follow the successful new formula.

The 2008 election will create a big change in atmosphere, much as the 1980 and 1992 elections of Reagan and Clinton did.

Chuck Norris jokes will be over by 2008, just to get that out of the way. ;)

Anyway much of this is speculation on whats already occuring, so i guess its always fun to predict. What do you think?

Yes, but is the Late 2000s more like the Late 1800s or the Late 1760s? :D

That sounds accurate. I'd also guess there'll be a more pronounced late '80s revival around 2009 or the early-mid '10s. The new Simpsons movie might even be the beginning of it, as it'll be something popular enough to get people talking about it again, even if not quite as much as 1990 or so.

I could see a revival of Paula Abdul/Steve Winwood/hair metal type music, too.

Good point but we're just scratching the surface. If someone wrote a book about the 60s that was published in 1967 they'd still miss many key things that peaked at the end of the decade. They'd only be scratching the surface on psychedelia, with the deaths of MLK and RFK still to come.

We can also talk about the 2010s too, but theres already a thread on that.

The rest of the late '00s are probably gonna be more of the same, in hip-hop which dominates radio airplay you'll have the what I now call post-crunk southern style hip-hop (a lazier more boring style initially started by "artists" like D4L, that lacks the energy mid '00s lil jon crunk had) being popular (this includes artists like T-Pain, Mims, Shop Boyz, etc) dominating that sector along with pop hip-hop including Rihanna, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Fergie, Ciara, Nelly Furtado, etc. In rock you'll have your typical whiny so called "emo" girly bands dominating, it's hard to even classify that stuff as rock music actually, on top of that you'll have your incredibly boring, dull, crappy, mediocre nickelback genre of rock being played on A/C stations across the country 24/7. In country you'll have country which always has sounded the same.

I think the whole hip-hop trend will at least dominant radio airplay until mid 2009. As for the pop-hip-hop trend that trend will probably innocate into some other music style(2010-2013 maybe?.)
