Subject: James Blunt - 1973

Written By: whistledog on 08/19/07 at 1:57 am

The new single '1973' by James Blunt.  Anyone heard it yet?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7Cd5LwV6eg

Could it give him that second US Top 40 hit that eluded him on 'Goodbye My Lover' and 'High' ?  Right now, it's in the Canadian Top 20, making this his 3rd Canadian Top 40 hit

Check the sleeve for the forthcoming album 'All the Lost Souls'.  How awesome is this ...

James Blunt was born in 1974, so it would be curious to read the lyrics.

It's odd that he called this song 1973.  Other hit songs with only a year for the title ...

1974 - Amy Grant
1979 - The Smashing Pumpkins
1980 - Estelle
1985 - Bowling For Soup
1998 - Binary Finary
1999 - Prince

You can add two more, if you allow 'B' sides to hit singles...

1963 - New Order
1977 - The Clash

One interpretation of the lyrics to 1973 by James Blunt follow as:

Simona
You're getting older
The journey's been
Etched on your skin

Simona
I guess I know this
We seemed so strong
We've been there and gone

I will call you up everyday Saturday night
And we both stayed out 'til the morning light
And we sang, "Here we go again"
And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
It was 1973
singing "Here we go again"

Simona
Wish I was sober
So I could see clearly now
The rain has gone

Simona
I guess it's over
My memory plays our tune
The same old song

I will call you up everyday Saturday night
And we both stayed out 'til the morning light
And we sang, "Here we go again"
And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
It was 1973
singing "Here we go again"

I will call you up everyday Saturday night
And we both stayed out 'til the morning light
And we sang, "Here we go again"
And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
It was 1973
singing "Here we go again"

I will call you up everyday Saturday night
And we both stayed out 'til the morning light
And we sang, "Here we go again"
And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
It was 1973
singing "Here we go again"

and though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
It was 1973

And then there's '74-'75 by The Connells, of course.

Titiyo had a song called 1989, and Melissa Etheridge had a song called 2001. Both got stuck in bubbling under section of Dutch Top 40.

I like this song at the moment and for a while, I thought that James was born in 1973, but he was in fact born the year after. However, his favourite nightclub in Ibiza opened in 1973.
