Up here in Massachusetts if you're driving on Route 2 by the Quabbin Reservoir, you'll see the signs for the humble town of Athol, which has been inspiring Beavis-and-Butthead laughs for generations.  And they're STILL bellyaching about it.  Comcast SportsNet ran an ad "We can pronounce Worcester without sounding like an Athol."  Town residents got all mad and threatened to boycott the network if they didn't cease and desist.  What about a sense of humor, guys?  Ever been to Athol?  Might come in handy!

One way to beat the problem might be to start pronouncing Athol accenting the first syllable only.  I pronounce it Ath'l and nobody gets confused...but noooooo everybody says it like Athhh-haaaul!
::)

*Worcester is generally pronounced WUSS-ter, though some people who live there say it "Wiss-tah."

Damn.

And all this time I thought it was pronounced "Wor-CEST-er."

(Not really, but I used to think that when I was a kid.  ;D)
