Normally I'm all for progress but not in these cases.  Wonder if any other history buffs find this appalling.

Hell yes, I'm angry. Why the f*ck should we sacrifice history for people's McMansions? Hell, I don't even know why "suburban sprawl" is happening considering the economy sucks.

Why should we honor the Civil War? Now when I move into my McMansion I actually have to pay the gardener and the cleaning lady!
Bah humbug!

Not all of them are.  Most of the smaller ones aren't.

I agree.  Not only that some jerks want to build their houses on them BECAUSE it's historic.  Often human remains are discovered while developers are excavating a site.  Do they stop the project and consider other options?  Usually not.  Did you hear how some businessman wanted to build a casino at Gettysburg.  He eventually dropped the ideal because of the townspeople protesting it.

At least Ghostbusters will have work when people see the undead soldiers walking through their establishments...or so I heard that happens...
Or are they all nuts in the South? (The ones with the stories of seeing these beings?) :-\\

In the early 90s Disney tried to build a theme park near Manassas, Virginia on a battlefield.  A group of historians successfully ran Michael Eisner all the way back to Florida:

Perhaps something similar could happen with this...

Or are they all nuts in the South?

Yes we are.  And be sure to tell everyone that so we'll stop getting so many transplants moving in, warranting this kind of destructive land development.  ;)

A casino at GETTYSBURG? What a stupid and inane idea.

I have a book or two on Civil War ghost.  They don't like the ideal of being built and paved over.

Nuts in the South.  No only the ones commonly refered to as "rednecks". ;D

I remember hearing about the "Civil War theme park" crap.  I think it was the Civil War Preservation Trust and the SMBA (Save Manassas Battlefield Association) that ran Eisner out on a rail.

They try to do it over here in the U.K too.
My parents live in a village near a civil war battle site. They wanted to build a gravel pit there and tried to get it's protected status reduced to a 'skirmish' not a battle. You can build on skirmish sites!
In the U.K, to get battlefield status and therefore be protected there are various criteria; the battle has to have gone on for over a certain time and involved a ceratin number of people. Something of historical significance had to have happened there etc.The locals fought long and hard and proved all of the above so the site was saved, but for how long? Someone offers enough of a back hander or the government sees a money making oppertunity and that's that. :-\\
