Subject: What is the music of Generation Y?

Written By: guest on 06/10/08 at 9:54 pm

Good post from NPR. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91204851

What is the music of Generation Y? I don't think that question has been answered yet and it still may be too early to tell, but we should be seeing signs now emerging since it is the late part of this decade and usually this is the time when future trends emerge. (1969 prog rock, 1979, disco bust, 1989 grunge, 1999 teen pop which influenced the whole 2000s) Has the changes in distribution and the rise of the internet made it impossible for a real generational movement to happen, even for a new genre to be created?  Obviously major label artists like Jay Z, Madonna, U2, Radiohead and Tori Amos leaving their labels is a big deal, but thats just the business side, what about the music? That may be the question this generation has to contend with.

The music of Generation Y is whatever people listen to.  You can't define one type of music to a Generation, because that would be saying that everyone born in that era all listened to the same stuff
