Subject: In the world of Cinema I call this the Remake/Sequel Era

Written By: A Perfect Stranger on 08/06/08 at 12:10 am

Don't necessarily have to agree with my statement, yet I don't think it'd be fair to completely ignore it either.    A lot of people sometimes say, "Why is Hollywood having all of these remakes? Why are they putting out so many sequels?".  In a sense I agree with them, why is Hollywood doing so? Is it because they're out of new ideas?  Is it because they don't have faith and belief that new people, with new stories can be successful?  I mean that's looking at it from one perspective.

Another perspective, is perhaps, as far as the sequels go, that maybe those in Hollywood don't feel that they left the last movie of their series on a good note.  Maybe they feel they needed to make "one more movie" to do justice towards an original film that may have been down played because of not so great sequels that followed it.

I'm not real sure what to make of this "Remake/Sequel" era that the film industry seems to be trapped in at the moment.

I suppose from a personal standpoint it's a hit and miss with me.

I lovedRocky Balboa, absolutely loved it.  Thought it was a fantastic film.  Rocky V left a bitter taste in my mouth, I didn't hate it, don't get me wrong, but to me it didn't do justice to who Rocky Balboa was, nor any of the other characters.  I felt that the new movie made a year ago or so, gave the legacy the upstanding that it deserves.  Don't get me wrong the film had it's errors, it's mistakes and it's cons.  However, there was just so much about the film that I loved.  The underlying tone of, not letting someone tell you your too old, that your heart is the last thing to die and so many other great messages really hit home with me.  I think a lot of the people who critized the film, didn't watch it or watched it for something that it wasn't.

That's my opinion though, and i respect others who are different.  I know a lot of people loved Rob Zombie's, Halloween.  I personally thought it was a brutal rape of John Carpenter's version.  I thought it was a disgrace, an abomination and a cold hard slap in the face to not only the original 1978 film, but to all of the fans of it as well.  It took who Michael Myers was, a purely and simply unexplainable evil, and humanized him with explainable pyschological explanations.  It took all mystery out of him, all the wonder.  Not to mention, it was just in really bad taste.  For those who loved it, I can tell you that I do appreciate a lot of the films pros.  For one, it had an outstanding cast.  Brad Doriff, Danielle Harris, and so many more.  Secondly, the atmosphere, scenary, and lighting were superb.  So, I do give the film credit where credit is due.  However, the screenplay was pure rubbish.  Modernized, cliche, unoriginal, no deep thought complete crap.  They story was downright awful.

Rambo was pretty decent.  I have to say decent because the "First Blood Movies" have never been my favorites.  I enjoy them, don't get me wrong, but feel since I'm not a diehard, "Rambo" fan like I am a "Rocky" and "Halloween" fan that I really have a right to judge.    With that said, may I say that the new film was very enjoyable.  I can see why some would love it, and I can see why some would hate it. I most definitely see why a lot say, "ah, I liked it, it was ok."

A lot of new sequels and remakes, I have yet to see.  They include the new Lost Boys film, the new Indiana Jones film, the new remake of Prom Night and of course a few others that I'm forgetting.

What's to be remade next?  What sequel are we going to see next?

There are times when I hear of a sequel or remake being made and I think to myself, "Ah!, don't touch the film!  The original was fantastic" or "The last film in the series was the best one" and much to my pleasant suprise, I end up loving the new film and am really glad that it got made.

That's the way it was for me and these new Batman films.  I thought a lot of Tim Burton's 1989 version, starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, and stubbornly refused to believe it could be topped.  With the three disgustingly dreadful sequels that followed, I was really happy when I was sure that the retarded version with George Clooney, Schwartzenegger and Chris O'Donnel was going to be the last one.  I mean don't get me wrong, I'll still pop a woody to see Alicia Silverstone in tight leather, but the screenplay and acting couldn't have been more cheesy.

Thinking of "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin" I thought that this new Batman Begins film is going to be another cartoonish, happy go lucky, rather dull film.  Boy was I in for a shock, when I saw the preview.  I was in for a larger shock when I went to the theatre to give the film a chance.  I thought the film was fantastic.  I wasn't real impressed with the strong liberal political messages they tried to subtly and quietly add in the film every 15 minutes, but I thought the overall acting, directing, and screenplay were pretty damn good.  When the Dark Knight came out, I think that Heath Ledger's outstanding, mesmorizing performance as The Joker, kept me from saying, "it wasn't as good as the first one".  He alone, made that film what it is.  Anyone who reads this, I hope  has faith enough to have faith in my critiquing and judging abilities.  If you think that I say that because Ledger is dead, you're only kidding yourself.  The man gave one of the best performances I've ever seen him give, have it be the God's of Legends, that just happened to make it his last.

I'm anxious to see more remakes and more sequels.  I'm sure some will rule and I unfortunately know that some will suck.  Some will honor and truly praise the original film or film in the series that came before it, and some will be a total disgrace to the new film, or completely ruin any hope that the film before had made for the series.  That's just the way it works.

Anyone wanna talk films with me?

There has been a resurgence if you will of old franchises coming back. Like Die Hard and Indy....but think about who's running the studios now. The people who grew up on these movies are nostalgic for their childhood and bring back some of their favorites because they can.

Forget Michael Bay and Steven Speilberg- Transformers probably got greenlit because someone high up in the studios remembered how much fun they were when he was 5.

I don't think they're wrong I love revisiting old friends so I say make these movies. I don't care if they bomb just have fun doing it and try to stay true to the original material.  Like Superman Returns. I know some didn't like this but I loved it... mostly because they incorporated small moments from the original Superman. The fact that they took the time to put this stuff in most people probably didn't notice anyway tells me Bryan Singer was a fan of the first film and wanted to honor it.

The thing that bugs me is remaking  classic films. I keep waiting for a new The Wizard of Oz or the Gone with the Wind or Citizen Kane.
If the movie was good to begin with then leave it alone if it sucked go ahead and try to revamp it.

Remaking King Kong was okay because special effects have advanced so much since 1933 but when it comes to movies that are about plot and character there is no need to touch the original.

Psycho sucked
Planet of the Apes sucked
There are plenty of others but as usual the moment I sat down to respond all my examples left me.
I'm one of those who liked the new version of Halloween.

I hated the Tim Burton Batmans and welcomed Batman Begins with open arms. I still haven't had the chance to see Dark Knight but I really want to.

it's true in a way, but then again, look how many "thin man" and "blondie" movies they made back in the supposed golden age.

Yeah, there is.  Corey Haim and Corey Feldman both returned for it.  I have no idea if it's any good or not, because, well like I said I haven't seen it.  I imagine you can find it at your local Wal-Mart or wherever you buy videos.  It's out on DVD now.

Hollywood is giving the public what they want. If you want it to go away, stop watching them.

I don't know if this is relevant to a sequel or remake thread, but I'm just going to go ahead and say that these Scary Movie knock-offs (i.e. Meet the Spartans, Superhero Movie)  have got to stop. I mean, it's the same sterile obnoxious humor over and over again, and they seriously just keep getting worse and worse (thought Superhero Movie was awful? Just wait til you see the latest Disaster Movie). At least they're driving such a bad idea right into the ground. I mean, what's next? Porno Movie? Rated PG-13.

Well ya can't blame it on a writers strike anymore...seems like the creativeness of Hollywood was accidently thrown out!.....To quote Angus Croc..."if its not Scottish. Its Crap"
Most of the trailers of these movies show the best???? bits in the 30 sec commercial..
I suppose Robert Downey jr needs the bucks to continue his habits!
Eddy Murphy hasn't been around lately..Has the Hollywood hay bailer broke down.....

The reason Hollywood has been putting out the quality of movies lately is to the reasons of geography!
All river flows are actually differant than what we've been told so all the sewers from New Brunswick & New York state flow in the direction of California......Too much of this has Influanced all the writers
Seems to be the only thing coming out of Hollywood these days!

Its the Remake Era for two reasons:

1. Hollywood has no original ideas left

2.  Now we have GOOD technology to make anything (no matter how imaginative) look real on film.  Therefore, all those films with not-so-good graphics can be remade.
