Subject: Facebook Members Page

Written By: MrCleveland on 11/12/08 at 2:56 pm

I'm a member of Facebook, but I don't know if anyone else is a member on this site I would like to form a page for all the members on here who also have a page on Facebook.

Holy crap, 8 inthe00s members just added me!  :o :o :o

(And of course I accepted.  :))

It's funny, I've had a Facebook account for probably close to 2 years but it was mostly inactive until about the last part of December, when for some odd reason I suddenly started coming in contact with a bunch of people I went to high school with. I went from having maybe 2 or 3 friends on Facebook to 77 (including those of you who just added me today) in a little over a month.

The more the merrier, I say. My name (for those of you who don't know and haven't added me yet) is Alan L. Barnhardt.

Well basically, it's a way of not just keeping in touch but "personalizing" your profile, doing surverys, uploading pictures, commenting on people's blogs or notes. It's just simple casual fun stuff (with all due respect, not everyone posts here, lol). I like looking up people I haven't seen in awhile and getting back in touch too.

I am, but I gotta lot of ex-girlfriends so, um, maybe I could squeeze you in a week from Thursday?  I can do the repeated late night phone calls (dead silence free, heavy breathing $5.00) or the house drive-by (first three free).  The following-you-and-your-significant-other  is my specialty for repeat clients, but we might be able to work something out in that direction if you're interested...

I am now on Facebook as well. I am desperately trying to stay FAR away from Farmville, because it looks like it could be a massive time sink. Besides, I want my farm to have coffee beans, tobacco, sativa, coca plants, and poppies.  Guess I'll have to wait for Farmville: South America to come out. ;D

Yeah, there's all kinds of games and things like that, which I've already gotten numerous invitations for... and I'm avoiding them for the same reason. I like to reconnect with my friends and not have to waste time with other stuff on there.

I ignore most of them.  Probably should get round to 'officially' ignoring them at some point to I can stop amassing them.

facebook kind of rocks.  To date I have around a dozen "friends". Among them...

  1.  An old friend who I've known since kindergarten, and only lives across town (a ten minute walk) who's been on permanent disability since he was thirty due to something-type-1 and something-else-type-2 and likes to say things like, "I think I'll turn-in early tonight, it's been a long day..."  A long day of what?  Eating take-out, watching Stargate SG1 DVDs and playing video games all day?  Come work for C&H, I'll show you what a long day is...

  2.  One member of my old high school posse who, at 40, still lives with his parents...

  3.  Girlfriend from the 8th grade who likes to talk about how wonderful her husband is, and how perfect her kids are, and how beautiful her house is, and how great her job is, and how cool her car is, and how terrific this big, beautiful world is for people with cheerful, happy lives, and she just loves everything to utter death and she's sooo happy that's she's just laughing through her happy, joyful tears.  She just discovered her son is a musical virtuoso.  She says it must be in her blood and she's quite excited (though not at all surprised) to discover this...

  4.  Best friend from my navy days who dropped off the radar long ago.  Midwestern born-and-bred, alternative to a fault, brilliantly faked a suicide attempt to get out of the navy, moved to Shanghai, got married and has put out a CD of Chinese string and wind pop/lounge music (must be heard to be believed).  It's difficult to exchange with Jon because of the commie curtain he finds himself behind.  Ah, those days of watching 7th generation copies of Taboo, smoking Sobranies and drinking cherry brandy.  I love this guy to death...

  5.  Various misc. - friends of friends, people I barely knew in high school and college and the service...

And it's a genuine pleasure to again meet (sort of) every last one of them...

   5.  Various misc. - friends of friends, people I barely knew in high school and college and the service...

And it's a genuine pleasure to again meet (sort of) every last one of them...

that's cool.

I have been able to reconnect with some of my high school friends on FB (some of whom didn't come to the reunion last year...including one fellow who I didn't really know personally, but I knew who he was because during our senior year his homeroom was next door to mine). I am also connected with people who I know well in real life, including some friends from church and my college years.

Remember the Konami trick?  It works on Facebook ...

Click in any Facebook page, then with your keyboard, press the following keys without the commas:

UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, ENTER

"Important Privacy Announcement
Worried about search engines? Your information is safe.
There have been misleading rumors recently about Facebook indexing all your information on Google. This is not true. Facebook created public search listings in 2007 to enable people to search for your name and see a link to your Facebook profile. They will still only see a basic set of information."

http://www.facebook.com/privacy/explanation.php?ref=pf

"Control every time you share
You can select a privacy setting for every post you make. Whether you are uploading a photo or posting a status update, you control exactly who can see it at the time you create it. Whenever you share something, look for the lock icon. Clicking on it will bring up a menu that lets you choose who will be able to see your post, from Friends, to Friends of Friends, to Everyone."

As for the google search or any other search engine, there is a privacy setting that you can allow for your profile to be indexed or not.

No matter what that article says - I am not worried about people seeing pics or reading certain things about me on it - I leave out what I don't want out there. Plain and simple. ;)

First rule of PR: When you're doing something your users object to, set up a strawman.  That's not what this latest kerfuffle is about.

No matter what that article says - I am not worried about people seeing pics or reading certain things about me on it - I leave out what I don't want out there. Plain and simple. ;)

...but do your friends?  Do all of their friends?  Alice writing "Hey, Bob, pity about your mom's diagnosis.  Did you hear Charlie's trying medicinal marijuana so he can keep his weight up during chemo?" on Bob's wall has compromised Charlie's chances for continued employment (poor Charlie, even though what he did was completely legal in California, Alice didn't know he worked for the government as a data entry clerk).  It's also increased the odds that Bob's mom (who might not even be on Facebook) might find herself on the "downsizing" list, so that her employer can keep group medical premiums down.

Now suppose it's Alice tagging a photo of Charlie.  No doubt about it, Charlie's not getting that job when the HR director goes and searches for photos tagged with "Charlie", because it was Alice's photo that got posted, on Bob's wall, and both of them value transparency over privacy... or just happen to be friends of someone who works with the HR department.

If you're doing something you shouldn't be, you probably shouldn't be posting it on the Internet.  But "something you shouldn't be" varies from person to person, and organization to organization.  That great shot of me at last weekend's Christmas party, standing in front of the ice sculpture with a glass of wine in my hand?  Well, I probably don't want to work for an organization managed by neo-Prohibitionists anyway... and now I won't worry about having to, ever.

Here's a nerdier take on the Facebook kerfuffle, which should illustrate the underlying issues better than I did.

Privacy may be dead, but I'd still prefer it if the people who want to stuff my snail-mailbox with spam, clog my phone with telemarketing, and play with my insurance costs and credit scores based on their assessment of my dining habits would have to work at it.

For any web forum topic, there exists an XKCD:

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/latitude.png

(Wait'll Facebook gets bought by Google and adds support for Latitude's real-time geolocation service, which can be activated on the Droid, finally automating the linking of your real-world identity, location, and any user-supplied twitter/SMS/FB-status data you care to supply.  Oh, there will be much lulz... :)

I get what you are saying Foo and you do have a point - but from my standpoint, Big Brother has always been watching, and will find out what he wants whether we want him to or not. ;)

Dig.  I'm OK with making tradeoffs.  If I ask my phone how many Italian restaurants are within a mile of my current location, and it gives me a list of answers, and directions to the one I select, I don't mind that it logs whether or not my phone subsequently drives (average traffic speed on city streets), takes the bus (frequent stops, less than half of average traffic speed on city streets), or walk (speeds under 5mph, wrong way on one-way streets) towards that restaurant, or if it turns around and goes home hungry.

Aggregated over numbers as small as a few hundred queries, that's hugely valuable information to any small business operator.  How many people searched for your business?  Did they read a review site for your business?  Your competitors?  To whose business did they ultimately end up going?  And the supreme irony is that I'm actually paying a telco for the ability to give this data to Google, so it can resell it to its customers.

But in exchange for that privacy tradeoff, I can live in a slightly-augmented reality - one in which I can pop into any city and find out where (if I'm wearing a suit) the best steakhouse is, or (if I'm in jeans) the best greasy spoon hamburger is.

In defence of tools like Facebook, when you combine stuff like social networking with things like geolocation and (give head-mounted displays another 2-3 years to come down in price) augmented reality, it's as close as we're likely to get to telepathy in our lifetimes.  Tools like Google Wave (real-time conversations between arbitrary numbers of remote participants) and Google Goggles (a prototype-state AR system - point your phone at something, and if someone else has tagged it, you'll see what it's called) are the first steps on the way to something interesting, even if privacy's dead as a result.

Required reading: In 1984, William Gibson's Neuromancer gave a generation of 8-bit geeks a vision of what 90s/00s "cyberspace" could look like.  Vernor Vinge's 2006 Rainbows End is no less important, and it's giving a generation of 2006 nerds a vision of what 2020 should look like, and it's a pretty cool place.

I do have a Facebook profile but I find Facebook's layout to be clumsy so only use it every so often.

If anybody would like to add me on Facebook, give me a PM.  :)
