Subject: Blu-Ray, have you made the switch yet?

Written By: whistledog on 01/02/09 at 11:09 pm

I got a Blu-Ray Player for Christmas, so I went out and bought all 4 Rambo films and the Resident Evil Trilogy.  Totally Awesome!
I will still buy DVDs (most notably TV on DVD), but for the most part, any new movie (as in new release) that I want, I will probably get it on Blu-Ray

Have you made the move from DVD player to Blu-Ray Player?

I MUST need new glasses...because I looked quickly when I saw the title of this thread..and I thought it said, "Billy Ray (as in Cyrus)...have you made the switch yet?"..hahaah. :D

Anyway..nope, I haven't yet.

I haven't, either. I guess I'm not ready yet.

I tried it last year when I had the PS3 but I took it back (decided I didn't need it at the time) but I might get it again eventually and keep it. I don't really watch too many movies. They've really dropped in price though now so it's pretty much not worth it to buy DVD anymore when you think about it.

You have an HDTV?

Otherwise Blu-Ray makes no sense.

I'm really dreading the demise of regular DVD.  I mean, I have like almost 300 DVDs and there's so many more to get before I die...

  So, no...

Probably jumping the gun, though.  Hopefully I'll be dead when the few remaining DVD players are being sold on eBay for $10,000 a piece...

I do

I never originally wanted to make the switch to Blu-Ray, but since I got one for Christmas, I figure I may as well buy some Blu-Ray movies.  The good thing is that a Blu-Ray player will still play DVDs, so it's actually worth it to own one

Alot of stores are selling off their HD DVDs for discounted prices.  I found a whole bunch of the Combo Format ones for $4.99 the other day :o

i got blu-ray, i watched two netflix movies on it so far, golden compass and a documentary about brazil. unfortunately neither movie was very good but they did look lovely.

i haven't bought any yet. i don't see it as making a "switch" as i will still use DVDs and VHS tapes. it's just adding another format. unless there's reason for the picture to be ultragood i'm not sure it matters much.

The picture is good, but if you just want the movie, then regular DVDs do the job and still play on a Blu-Ray player.  Some people want real crisp sound and picture, but to me, it doesn't really matter.  A movie is a movie

yeah, i'm thinking star wars, die hard, movies like that, and also really lush 2001: a space odyssey type movies you want blu-ray if you can get it. but usually it's no big whoop.

Ones like those cost big bucks on Blu-Ray.  The Die Hard Tetralogy on Blu-Ray goes for atleast $89.  That's ridiculously expensive.  Though in some places, you can get 2001: A Space Odyssey for around $14

that works out good, actually. i haven't seen it yet but i predict old-school 35mm and 70mm film will look beautiful on blu-ray. one hot tip i'm following is "enter the dragon" for 14 bucks. i think a lot of people would assume blu-ray won't add anything to old movies but anything shot on theater-quality film is gonna blow away anything that a standard t.v. resolution can capture and i've already been very impressed with some standard DVD captures of 70s movies. i think blu-ray adaptations will be that much better, and because the retro stuff isn't current it'll be cheap. stuff like die-hard i can get on netflix.

five'll get you 10 2001 will blow minds on blu-ray, and for 14 bucks that's gonna be about as good a deal as you can get for your entertainment dollar. it's just i've already seen that goddamn movie about 24,0000 times. i love it to death but i'm not sure i ever want to see it again.

That's sort of how I feel about Eagle Eye...  I watched Eagle Eye on regular DVD and found myself thinking this movie sucks.. It would still suck on Blu- Ray but at least it'd be pretty  spectacular to watch ;D

well, there's crap movies i sorta like like independence day and twister or volcano or wild wild west that might benefit from blu-ray as well. thing is, regular DVD looks damn good already. i can sorta see the difference but at this point it's like adding a pinch of salt to a whole turkey. or something.

In some cases a Blu-Ray Disc can cost less than an actual DVD.

I just bought the Spiderman Trilogy on Blu-Ray for $39.99.  That's $13 per film
Bought 'Bangkok Dangerous' on Blu-Ray (piece of sh!t movie by the way) for $24.99.  On DVD, it was the exact same price

No HD TV, no Blu Ray.

Still trying to figure out what to do with the 100 or so VHS tapes I own when my VHS player dies!

I do want a new tv soon (would love to give Micah mine before it dies).  Can I get away with LCD or do I have to go Plasma?  Sorry if this is a threadjack (if so, just ignore question!!)

You may be able to digitize your VHS movies and then burn them to a DVD-R...they have hardware and software for that purpose.  I just don't know where :D

Most places here too it is anywhere between $69 - $79, but the local Jumbo Video (Canadian chain video rental stores) had it for $39 brand new.  At that price, I didn't even have to stop and think about getting it ;D

And for more deals I found, the local Rogers Video (another Canadian chain of video rental stores) had 25% off their previously viewed Blu-Ray discs, so I got 'Wanted' for $17

I have slightly made the switch, because of my new laptop.

When I was looking for one last weekend, I found one I liked, and it had a Blu-Ray player.  And to make sure it works OK, I bought one Blu-Ray movie:  Stargate.

But I doubt I will ever really make a "switch".  With over 700 DVDs in my collection, there is simply no reason for me to "make the switch" from one format to the other.  But I will probably start to slowly buy my newer movies in that format, when the price gets closer to that of DVDs.  Most of the time they are still from $5-15 more then the same thing in DVD.

It's funny, but I can still remember my first purchases in each format over the years.  My first Beta was Xanadu.  My first CED was Firefox.  My first VHS was The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension and my first DVD was The Green Mile.

well "iron man" is cool.

is "taxi driver" out on blu-ray? i'm tempted to get that, 2001, the original (and unpolluted by george lucas' retouch BS) star wars and empire, starship troopers would be fun, the matrix and matrix reloaded (i don't care, i like the first sequel)...

i dunno, i have to admit it's growing on me. it looks pretty good. i finally watched a good movie on it so that sorta changed my opinion.

To my knowledge, the Star Wars Trilogies are not yet available on Blu-Ray.  I know 2001: A Space Odyssey is because I see it pretty much everywhere for like $14.99.  I believe Taxi Driver is as well.  On Hi-Def, DeNiro looks so crisp and clear, he actually is talking to you LOL

well i'd make sure but i aint gonna ask him! i don't want no trouble! :D

i saw taxi driver on the big screen when it was rereleased a few years back and i was surprised at how amazing it is. i wouldn't say beautiful, but the matter-of-fact shots on the manhattan streets are really stunning. i was surprised how good it looked, i was used to thinking of it as a tv movie and just thinking about it as having great performances, but it's incredibly visual as well, in a way that totally gets lost on a t.v. screen. i think it'll be really impressive on blu-ray

how much you wanna bet lucas is gonna be a big bitch about releasing the original two movies (which are the only star wars movies that aren't totally dead to me) on blu-ray. he'll probably be all, "no, i need to add MORE CGI FIRST."

he's a fudging dick. i wanna see the crappy 70s special effects on blu-ray. i wanna see them little blue boxes around the tie fighters on blu-ray, i think that will be sweet.

Lucas'll take his time that's for sure.  With Blu-Ray, he can do so much more, so you can bet when he does release the original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-Ray, each movie will probably be a 3 disc set.  1 disc with the movie and 2 disc with special features and other crap that only Star Wars geeks care about LOL

"OMG A still photo of Han Solo's belly button lint?"  Man, that alone makes it worth the $100 some bucks I just spent :D

"OMG A still photo of Han Solo's belly button lint?"  Man, that alone makes it worth the $100 some bucks I just spent :D
dude, my dream star wars dvd:

a. the movie, straight up original, made to look as good as it can. no retouching. "you got transferred to blu-ray in THAT thing? you're braver than i thought!"
b. they did a making-of feature back in the 70s, throw that in as an extra.
c. all the tryouts, cindy williams and kurt russell and all that, the same stuff as what's on youtube.
d. the scene with biggs on tatooine! that's the big legendary omission from the original. without it, when biggs dies at the end it doesn't make as much sense.

that's it. done. sell it for 14.99. maybe put the christmas special on there too. no one will ever actually watch it, because it's toxic waste reshaped into a televisual form, but it would be fun to know it's there.

but i know you're right. right now i bet rich white people are debating how they can throw a few more baubles on there and kick it up to $499.95 apiece for the 14-disk set. ::)

^ All good choices, and what I wish is they keep the original movie poster art, which they probably won't.  And maybe even throw in a bonus game of the original "Star Wars Arcade Game" (the one with the green lazers) that's playable on a PS3

ha! great minds! i was thinking that too. throw on the game.

for the empire strikes back, you could put on a MAME version of the atari 2600 empire strikes back adaptation. 8)

well first he'll probably just release the films.

then 2 years later the remastered collectors edition

then the deluxe special editions with extra disc

then the superduper deluxe collectors full set with a collector's millenium falcon or something....

because he'sall about making you go out an buy the movie 5 times in 15 years!  ;D

and the irony of it is, the one that's just the film is the one that will be the collector's item. at least, that's the one I'M buyin'.

All I really want is the film(s) as well.  I don't care about any of the special features.  I mean they add on all these features you don't really want, and jack the price up an extra $50

The other day I was at HMV and saw a remastered version of 'Blade Runner' that was a 5 Disc set.  5 discs?  WTF.  Unless that movie is like 24 hours long, then I ain't buying no effin 5 disc set just to get 1 movie

Zellers, that Canadian department store and Wal-Mart competitor came through again.  They had HD-DVDs (Combo Format) on sale for $6.99 each, so I got ...

♦ Fast Times at Ridgemont High
♦ Dazed and Confused
♦ Atonement
♦ Accepted
♦ Eastern Promises
♦ The Fast and the Furious:  Tokyo Drift
♦ The Hitcher
♦ The Scorpion King

And check this out:  Future Shop had 'The Pink Panther' on Blu-Ray for $24.99, but one copy had a mislabeled price sticker on it, and since by law they have to sell it for that price, I bought it and paid only $4.99 + tax.  And inside, it came with free movie cash to see 'The Pink Panther 2' in theatres 8)

Dang those HD DVD discs.  I hope it comes to Blu-Ray soon.

Speaking of classics on Blu-Ray, I just picked up the Blu-Ray edition of the 25th anniversary of 'Ghostbusters'.  I never really care for special features, but the one thing that disappointed me was that the music video for 'Ghostbusters' by Ray Parker Jr. is not included, nor is the video for 'Cleanin' Up the Town' by The Bus Boys (which was also a hit)

So just for the heck of it ...

Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr.
The Bus Boys - Cleanin' Up the Town

I just got the first 3 Die Hard's for $11.99 and 'Live Free or Die Hard' for $14.99 :o

That's a total of $51 bucks, as compared to $69.99 I seen for the complete box set at HMV.  Though that itself is a good deal considering anywhere else you go, it's atleast $80, which is a ridiculous amount to pay for a Blu-Ray set

Went into Zellers today, and got 'Air Force One' for $9.99.  I still can't believe that price.

Also went into a pawn shop and found a brand new copy of the 'Starship Troopers' trilogy for $39.99

Deals:  I can find them! 8)

I only ever saw the first one, which wasn't bad.  I figured for $40, to get all three was a good deal, regardless if the movies themselves are good or not.  I am knowing for buying bad movies ROFL

Now that's a good deal!

The last Blu-Ray I bought was 'Crank 2: High Voltage' for $26.99, but it had a defect, and when Wal-Mart discovered that they sold me a movie they weren't supposed to sell until it's release date (on Tuesday), they were suddenly in hot shit and had to get approval to give me a refund for a movie that technically isn't supposed to exist yet ;D

Id say it counts only if you're actually watching blu rays (and starting to purchase blu ray dvds instead of regular dvds) if you're only using the PS3 as a gaming device then it doesn't quite count...

So apparently the issue with 'Crank 2' on Blu-Ray is a world-wide thing.  People as far as Ireland, Australia and Scotland are experiencing the same thing I did.
