US woman has given birth to eight babies, becoming just the second person recorded in the US to have delivered a set of living octuplets.

The six boys and two girls, who were nine weeks premature, were delivered by Caesarean section in the hospital near Los Angeles, California.

The babies weighed in at between 1lb 8 ounces (820g) and 3lb 4oz (1.47kg) and are all said to be doing well.

They were screaming and kicking around very vigorously, a doctor said.

The mother, whose identity has not been revealed, has asked that limited information be released about the births

She checked in to the hospital 23 weeks into her pregnancy and gave birth seven weeks later.

A spokeswoman at the Bellflower medical centre described the deliveries, which took place in the space of five minutes, as "truly amazing".

The medical team had scheduled a Caesarean section for seven babies, but doctors were surprised when an eighth came out.

"Lo and behold, after we got to Baby G, which is what we expected, we were surprised by Baby H," said Dr Karen Maples.

Three of the babies needed help breathing, but all were otherwise doing well, a doctor said.

The babies will be in incubators for at least six weeks and the mother is planning to breast feed them all, the hospital officials said.

"She is a very strong woman, so she probably will be able to handle all eight babies," said Dr Mandhir Gupta.

He added that the mother was "doing very, very well" and was "really excited that she got all of these babies, and that they're doing good so far".

The team did not give any more details about the mother's identity or say whether she had used fertility drugs.

This makes me sooooo tired I don't know where to start.  Well, good luck to the children, they will need it.  I wonder if she will home school?

I would think so.  Knowing what we now know about transferring bodily fluids(and that is what it is) each wet nurse would have to go through a battery of tests for diseases.  Then it is possible for the child to be allergic to the breast milk of someone other than their mother.  Formula would probably be safer.

She already had 6 children and she is 29, there wasn't any reason for fertility drugs in the first place.  Considering that she didn't have any problems with the previous six,  it was inevitable that all the embryos would survive.

I heard that she is single and lives with her parents...and already had 6 kids. Why in the name of God..would someone who already had that many kids, and is already putting her parents out (IMO) choose to have more? Sorry..but that is so selfish. If you are going to have that many children...you should make sure that you are very financially stable...and not have to depend on others for support.

Probably because their daughter is living off of them with six children(now 14).  They lost 2 properties to foreclosure, and live in a 3 bedroom house.  Something is just not right all the way around.

I really think she should put some of these kids up for adoption-or the state is going to do it for her.

I think she has unrealistic expectations about having children and raising them.  The doctor should have looked at her situation and said NO.  He's irresponsible for doing this.

So Oprah is going to be the bread winner.  What if she says no?  2 million with 14 kids that will only last her about 2 years.  Her Mother is really upset with her and said she won't be there when she and the kids get back.  This woman is so irresponsible even hardcore pro-lifers are disgusted.

Of course it was terribly irresponsible and I would say mentally unsound.  What's done is done.  A million bucks from Huggies and Oprah might buy a bigger house and some nannies.

This would be preferable in lieu of state custody and foster "care."

The word from her mother is that the eggs implanted were her own, and the last of the ones she had harvested.

I would guess that Oprah may discuss the case, but won't have the woman on so as not to encourage others to pull a similar stunt.  The children will probably be given health care, more as a way to study them as opposed to any other reason.  I do not doubt that there are people waiting in the wings wanting to help out just to be part of the spotlight.  We'll see.....

I thought the same exact thing!  I was thinking 'here is a Angelina with stringy black hair' and no money.  I have a friend whose sister did the same thing tough, kept having babies, she ended up with 10 from multiple fathers, then tried to pass a child of her daughter off as her own when her daughter was pregnant and didn't want to keep the baby.  Soon as they are out of diapers she lost interest and wanted another.  It is a sickness and the kids pay for it.

Poeple actually had to WORK for that in the old days!LOLmy 4gg had 11 kids---and in the census,for occupation,she is listed as having "none'.none of this "being a mom is a job " crap back then.

And she (along with their father) did not seek attention. This guy (can't remember his name) basically exploited the girls. Because the parents were poor, they didn't know how to fight for their parental rights. And yes, they did have other children also. Because of that asshole, the girls were messed up all of their lives. It was a very sad story.
