Subject: Favorite 2009 songs (so far).

Written By: Marty McFly on 01/27/09 at 8:54 pm

Let me start this out by saying, in the last year I've started REALLY liking new music again, like I've been digging some songs almost on the same level I did as a kid in the '80s/earlier 90s. Some have already become that much of a favorite, maybe it's because the super urban crunk and post-grunge of most of the zeroes is kinda declining and more melodic, synthy stuff is getting big again. And ballads too.

Here's my list - I know alot of these are probably mid-late 2008 but are popular now:

Pokerface, and Just Dance - Lady Gaga
Love Song - Taylor Swift
Shake it - Metro Station (probably the most new wave stuff to ever come out since like 1992!)
Thinking of You - Katy Perry (it took awhile to grow on me, but it's actually a good ballad. Meanwhile "Hot N Cold" has to already be one of my absolute favorite songs)
Sober - Pink (probably her best song, I love midtempo stuff like this)
One Step at a Time - Jordin Sparks
Heartless - Kanye West (usually not into him, but I like the slower ballad groove of this song)
Human - the Killers
Womanizer - Britney (it's more synthy/club type pop like Rihanna more than her own style)

A lot of 08/09 hybrids since we're early in the year.

Circus - Britney Spears
Poker Face - Lady GaGa
Just Dance - Lady GaGa (this has been out a while too, it's on my 2008 list but it's peaking in early 2009 in this country so I'll put it)
Sober - Pink
Love Story - Taylor Swift
Single Ladies - Beyonce
Dead and Gone - T.I.
I Hate this Part - Pussycat Dolls
My Life Would Suck Without You - Kelly Clarkson
Day N Nite - Kid Cudi
Turnin Me On - Keri Hilson (one of the hottest songs on urban radio now, not to mention Keri Hilson is HOT)
Where I Stood - Missy Higgins (this has been out too but they're just starting to play it on Hot AC seemingly)
Mad - Ne-Yo
You Found Me - Fray
Thinking of You - Katy Perry (same for me doesn't have that instant appeal that Hot N Cold had but I've warmed up to it)
Heartless - Kanye West
Untouched - Veronicas (another song that's been out for a while but didn't peak until now here)

I like 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face', but over here, they be 2008 songs.  Heck, 'Just Dance' hit #1 here back in the Autumn of '08 LOL

Most of the songs I like so far in 2009 are left overs from 2008 ...

♦ Flowers and Football Tops - Glasvegas (Will be released in February as the 3rd single from their 2008 debut album)

♦ Move for Me - Kaskade featuring Deadmau5 (Debuted in the Canadian chart in January.  Was already a dance club hit in September of 2008)

♦ Lady Killer - Kreesha Turner (Hasn't peaked in the chart yet.  It's still rising)

Day N Nite - Kid Cudi

Nothing released so far this year has stood out for me just yet.

Yeah "Womanizer" does sound more Rihannalike than actually Britney.

"Sober" is the best "Pink" single since "Don't Let Me Get Me" or "Just Like A Pill" I think.

I agree "Metro Station" does seem very 80's new wave influenced too.

I heard another one this morning I like - "Gives You Hell" by the All American Rejects.

I was shocked when I looked it up to download it and found out it was them, lol. It's a different sound for them, it kinda sounds like medium tempo '90s alternative.

I stand corrected on this one...it had been released last year, and reached #1 in November, but it still retained popularity into the early part of this year. I wonder if "ellipsis" will try to take this up with me. ::) Still, I do like it somewhat.

Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You", which I think is from this year, is probably the best song I enjoy that has come out this year so far.

More to add:

"Rockin' That Thang" by The-Dream
"Diva" by Beyonce
"Jai Ho" by A. R. Rahman
"Get On Your Boots" by U2

Overall, I don't think 2009 is as good musically as 2008 was, at least so far. Maybe it will pick up as the summer approaches, hopefully.

I love it because it uses one of the beats from TLC's song Baby-Baby-Baby and he even sings one of the verses.

I think Nostalgia for the early 90's is starting take off?

^^^I think nostalgia for the 90s in general is starting to take off. I just heard Flo Rida's latest single yesterday called "Sugar" ft. Wynter Gordon and Mista Mac Freestyle. The chorus samples the mega-popular 1999 song "Blue" by Eiffel 65. I actually like this song more than "Right Round"; it's catchy. It kinda has a early '00s feel to it.

I just made a post about Sugar LOL before I read this.

Yes, 2009 definitely has some 90's nostalgia to it. I like it more than Right Round too.

2009 feels more like an opening of the 10's decade to me than a closing of the 2000's. But I can't be so sure because we haven't esperienced the 10's. I'm not sure if I want to, considering I'll be in my 30's and my generation will be 20 years old.

They're making regional versions for parts of the US ("I'm In L.A.", "I'm In The Valley" (for AZ) ).

LMFAO also did an electro-remix of Fergie's "Clumsy" called "Girl Can't Help It" that's kinda cool.

The Wind Blows - All American Rejects
Just Dance - Lady Gaga
Lovegame - Lady Gaga

I'd forgotten that RevCo still existed.  Yep, the one and only Revolting Cocks.

And it's been months since they came out with both a brand-new album and a remix album, and even a tour (dammit, I missed it!), and I just found out about it this week.

Not sure if it's "of the year", but it's definitely in contention: Hookerbot 3000 (Tweaker Mix).  Great mix of industrial, funk, electro, and a little 8-bit thrown in.

"Viva la Vida" is from 2008 but yeah it's still great!  ;)

So is "Hot N Cold" by Katy Perry, but I got into that one in early '09.

Anything by Black Eyed Peas. They put out the most hits and their songs are so fun

Of all the songs in 2009, I think my favourite was 'Infinity 2008' by Guru Josh Project.  Not only did it enter the Canadian Hot 100, it rose to #35 in it's second week (May 2009).  This to me remains the biggest surprise of 2009, just slightly ahead of David Guetta's double Top 40 score.
