Subject: What's The Big Deal With Susan Boyle?

Written By: Indy Gent on 04/18/09 at 10:12 pm

She's 47, and has allegedly never been kissed in the romantic setting (it may sound mean, but after looking at her, I'm not surprised), but she can sing like Edith Piaf (at least on "Britain's Got Talent", where Simon Cowell is one of the judges). You Tube and the Today Show are gushing about her sweet voice and fairy tale storyline. Nut I don't think she's any different from rock and rap stars (not to equate those with her) with similar rags-to-riches stories. I like a good human interest story like this one. Let's hope she can turn that to her advantage.

What does Susan Boyle remind me of?  I apologize in advance, but I just can't help it.
Every time I see her, I remember Monty Python:

Good morning Mrs. Premise!
Goooood morning, Mrs. Conclusion!
Busy day?
Busy, I just spent four hours burying the cat!
Four hours to bury the cat?
"Yeahz, 'e kept wrigglin' about and 'owling!"
"Oh, so he's not really dead then?"
"No, but he's not at all a well cat, and
we're going away for a fortnight..."
"Yes, you don't want to come home from Sorrento
to a dead cat!"
"I heard Mrs. Essence flushed her budgie down the loo....."

(ducks and scampers away as fast as humanly possible....)

I think it is because people love a story of triumph over adversity. She has spent her whole life being mocked, teased and bullied for the way she looks and the fact she is 'slow' because she has slight brain damage, and yet she remains cheerful and positive, has never given up and what a voice!

Edith Piaf?? I think you have the wrong singer there she sounds nothing like Edith Piaf!

I love her.  She may not be a beauty to some people, but her personality, her talent, and the fact that she risked ridicule from Simon Asshole and Co. makes her gorgeous in my eyes.

Because she's an older singer trying to make it in the music industry. Most of the female singers now that first get started in the music industry range from ages 18-22.

Since it's Britain's Got Talent, I gather if she gets record deal, her single will be massive over in the UK, but will it emulate to North America?

If Leona Lewis can do it, then I say yes

I wouldn't have joked about her looks if she did not remind me soooo much of Cleese and Chapman dressed as the "pepper pots" on Python!

I hardly ever buy CDs, but if she puts one out, I'll practically feel obliged. I'll send it to my mum or something.

My freakin' International Relations prof somehow worked this lady into the lesson today, and I go to a French-language university! I'm asking myself how he found out about this before me. So I checked it out when I got home and now I can't get the dâmn song out of my head. To think that she's spent over forty years getting shît on by everyone for the pettiest of reasons. People can be so cruel.

I'm never moved by media fluff like this, but hers is a story I think people needed to hear.

Yes.  It's a little embarrassing, but I was in concert choir in H.S. and we sang songs from Les Miz, including that one!
:-[

I personally could never sing as well as Ms. Boyle does; I'm not ripping on her, believe me.  Anyway, I haven't sung in over 20 years and my pipes are pretty rusty.  Last time I tried, the cat wouldn't come out from under the bed for two days!

The thing is on the Idol series, you've got a leg up if you're not totally awful.  If Ms. Boyle were to audition for an opera company, she would face a much more stringent panel.

Very true. Personally I think she has a 'show' voice rather than an opera voice and sadly her appearance would always stand in the way because she doesn't look like a leading lady in a musical.  :-\\

There was a thing in the paper about various people from the first 2 shows and what they are doing now. Most of them have stage work. In some ways I'm sure it's better to carry on quietly and steadily working than have your big number one single and then never be heard of again.

I love HIGNFY.

I've never really watched BGT until this year - it's kind of addictive. I was on holiday in the US when Susan Boyle was at the audition stage, and as soon as I got home I was bombarded with images and soundbites of her. I think the whole furore was because it was all so unexpected - it was built up that she was spinster who just fancied her chances at being Elaine Paige. She can sing, but she's not amazing...I rate the dancers much more in this competition, but Stavros Flately are both endearing and hilarious!

A spokeswoman for Susan Boyle says the Britain's Got Talent finalist lost her cool after being harassed by two journalists at a London hotel.

The spokeswoman says the singer was distressed after being taunted by the reporters at the Wembley Plaza Hotel on Wednesday.

The spokeswoman says police removed the two journalists who harassed the singer from the building. She would give no further details about what the reporters said. She spoke on condition of anonymity because she represents all of the contestants on the show.

The spokeswoman was responding to questions about a Sun newspaper report Thursday that Boyle swore in front of Britain's Got Talent fans and contestants using four-letter words. The newspaper printed a photograph of the singer talking to a police officer.

Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle has been moved to a "safe house" as she prepares for Saturday's final.

One judge, Piers Morgan, confirmed that she had become so "distraught" at negative media headlines this week that she almost quit the ITV show.

He said the singer from West Lothian was now relaxing with one of her closest friends from Scotland.

A former psychologist for Big Brother said she should be withdrawn from the contest to protect her mental health.

Britain's Got Talent's runner-up Susan Boyle is taken to a private clinic, after being examined under the Mental Health Act.

Darn, she just couldn't take the pressure. Maybe she expected to win?  ???

The same private clinic that catered Amy Winehouse.

Street dance group Diversity is crowned the winner of this year's Britain's Got Talent, beating favourite Susan Boyle.

Susan Boyle will still get a record deal probably, but I can't see her topping the charts anytime soon, though it would be funny if she did.  I can just see the headines:

"Susan Boyle keeps Westlife from the Top UK spot.  First, they get outed by Bob the Builder, and now Susan Boyle!  What next, Cookie Monster?"

It's shocking to the shallow world that unattractive people actually have good traits that isn't exposed to the naked eye.
