What are some of the best movies in 2009 right now?

One that comes to mind to me is Star Trek.

District 9.

It was so good that even though the plot practically necessitated a setup for a sequel... I really hope there isn't one.

Star Trek is my favorite too. I just got it on Blu Ray but I haven't watched it yet.

Runners up are Watchmen, Terminator: Salvation, and Transformers 2. I have yet to see 2012, and Avatar looks like its going to be good.

2012 was better than Armageddon, but there was a lot of stupid jokes and fake cgi.

Now that I've seen Avatar, that is my favorite movie of 2009. Star Trek is #2, and 2012 is #3.

Same here. Public Enemies was great until the disappointment of an ending. Pixar's Up made me laugh the hardest this year. I had my doubts about Sherlock Holmes but Downey & Law made it work brilliantly. And an Oscar nod for Bullock wouldn't surprise me thanks to The Blindside.

Finally got around to watching District 9 last week.  Disappointing as usual...

The first half is exquisite.  It really had the makings of compelling, culturally significant sci-fi drama, "A Dry White Season" with aliens, but halfway through the story takes a turn for the conventional, ending in a predictable, lame-brained shoot 'em up complete with Robotech battle suit.  The second half left me feeling betrayed.  The writers take full advantage of the unsophistication of today's movie going audience.  Too bad.  District 9 had much potential...

Recommended for the first half only.  Then push "stop" and go play Monopoly...

District 9 sets itself up for a sequel, but I'll take a pass.  Even on home video...

*While watching, keep your eyes open for an homage to Cronenberg's version of "The Fly"... :)

Having watched the interviews in the extras, and in fairness, the production team admit they weren't trying to re-invent the wheel with District 9.  No grand social statements - no South Africa in the 1980s, no Apartheid, &etc. (despite the alien craft settling over Johannesburg in 1982.  Also, it was interesting to see that those once-oppressed people of South Africa looking down their noses at the aliens).  They really could've picked that story up and ran with it, but instead they decided to make it into a mere action movie...
