Subject: Singer Susan Boyle's new album makes UK chart history

Written By: Philip Eno on 11/30/09 at 1:20 am

Singer Susan Boyle's album is number one after it became the best-selling debut in UK chart history.

Boyle, a runner-up in ITV's Britain's Got Talent, has so far sold 410,000 copies of her album, I Dreamed a Dream.

Pop mogul Simon Cowell said he was proud of Boyle and added that the success could not have happened to a nicer person.

Boyle, 48, said the news was "fantastic". Her album is also expected to be a hit in the US.

Cowell said: "She did it her way and made a dream come true.

"In Britain's Got Talent she opened her mouth and the world fell in love with her, which is why her album has been the fastest selling of any woman making her debut."

Martin Talbot, of the Official Charts Company, described Boyle's achievement as "phenomenal".

Boyle's spokeswoman added that the singer was outselling Rihanna, Lady Gaga and 50 Cent in the US.

She said Boyle was set to break Eminem's previous record for highest first week US sales in 2009.

Boyle, from West Lothian, struggled to handle the worldwide attention she gained after her first audition was watched by millions on television and the internet.

In June 2009, she was admitted to The Priory clinic after suffering an anxiety attack in the aftermath of the Britain's Got Talent final.

She also missed a number of live shows after suffering with exhaustion.

Cowell, who judges on Britain's Got Talent as well as being its creator, admitted that mistakes were made in handling Boyle speedy rise to global fame.

I seen people buying copies of her CD at Wal-Mart the other day.  Granted, they were of the older crowd.  I can't see today's teen buying her CD

A lot of her poplularity, aside from her talent, is that she looks like the sister that tagged along, but the other kids didn't want play with.  The person who you were kinda mean too, but now feel bad about being mean to, and here she was all along a nice person and an amazing talent.  You want to just hug her and make sure she is okay.

Her stuff isn't my thing, but I just hope 'the industry' doesn't chew her up and spit her out...

Two singles?

'Wild Horses' was, but 'I Dreamed A Dream' is not.  The latter charted based on downloads ot such a degree, that it may be decided to be the 2nd single already if it enters the Top 40 (both already have in the UK)

Is she one of the few people to have a #1 album on both sides of the Atlantic simultaneously?

Oh lighten up and give the lady a chance. She hasn't always had it easy. :) By the way, wonder why there's a painting of her over at Wikipedia and not a photo:

Some artist hoping to get discovered on Wikipedia? :-)
