Despite not having even invented the wheel, they created a complicated calendar system accurate to within 34 seconds of what we know a lunar month to be today.

But unlike our calendar, which counts dates up, theirs lasts 5,000 years and counts down to the winter solstice on December 21, 2012 - or 13.0.0.0.0 in what is called their "Long Count" system.

Anyway, yeah, I remember things that happened on January 1, 2, and sadly, 3, 2000. In some ways it feels like yesterday!

On Monday, January 3, 2000, I went with my mom and her co-workers to the Long Beach Aquarium; her then-boss always organized a "staff play day" every year at a different location, and those were lots of fun. Since this was my final week off before going back to school, my mom invited me to come with her, figuring I'd enjoy it. And I did!! (Also, I had just been to that aquarium six months earlier, for my birthday.)

10 years ago this month, my family and I were in the midst of putting our mobile home up for sale. Also, this was around the time when we began looking at new houses in new housing developments. We started out by looking in the Santa Clarita area (in the communities of Canyon Country, Saugus, and Castaic), and some of those places had decent floorplans, but they were kinda pricy and the location was one with a warm climate in the summertime. Then we began looking in Ventura County and eventually found the best deal.

Also, it was on this date (July 4th, 2000) when I last went into a swimming pool. It was at a friend's house; he and his family were having a holiday party that day.

I remember my life on that day pretty well. I had my class in the morning at Mission College, but I stayed later on campus during the day to study. There was this girl I was interested in at the time; she was a student there and was also working in the "Foster Care" department. (I had met her the previous semester in biology class and she seemed real nice. And she was also cute.) Anyway I kept feeling the urge to approach her when she came around and say something to her, but I didn't know how to tell her how I was feeling. I went home at about 4:30pm that day feeling rather depressed, and worried that I might be "overdoing" things in a sense. So that night, at about 7:51pm, I decided to myself that I would not go near her for one full week.

(I would eventually work things out with her, and say goodbye to her in December, because that was my last semester at this particular community college. But she showed up in my life again in 2002 at CSUN, where things would go somewhat downhill.)

Those Ravens had that great defense with Ray Lewis, James Trapp, Rod Woodson, Jamie Sharper, Tony Saragusa, and Duane Starks. I remember their kick returner Jermaine Lewis. They had a young Running Back in Jamal Lewis back then. That Ravens team beat the Jets in the last game of the regular season. They beat the Giants in that Super Bowl of course. So its not good for me I am a New York football fan. I respect that 2000 Ravens defense though! That was the best defense since the 1985 Chicago Bears! The 1986 New York Giants and 1991 Philadelphia Eagles are legendary defenses too!

Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, Byron Evans, Andre Waters, Wes Hopkins those guys were mean! They made "The Body Bag game" famous in the 1990 season vs the Washington Redskins. I remember Buddy Ryan as their coach too back in 1990. I think Rich Kottite was their head coach from 1991-1993 before Ray Rhodes took over in the 1994 season.

Eric Allen who played Corner Back back in that era for the Eagles was classy and still is. Reggie White was very classy off the field. That Eagles team used to give the Giants fits back then. Only the Eagles, 49ers, and The Rams gave the Giants problems then(1988-1990.)

I can't beleive it's been ten years either. I mean I literally can remembe rit like yesterday, my mom calling me into her room and telling me about it because all my friends I LOVED Aaliyah. She was so cool and we all wanted to be just like her. I think if she'd lived, she'd be where Beyonce is now.

(But with a more attractive hubby than Jay-z.  8-P )

I miss her. All the greats are leaving us!

August 27, 2001, was my first day of going to school at Cal State Northridge. I only had two classes that day: music (intro to jazz) and math (beginning calculus). It was a new experience for me, and I enjoyed it. Little did I know that I'd be there for 7+ years altogether.

I ended up enjoying the calculus class because the professor was a really good guy; I went on to take him for the second part of the course as well.

and they kept talking about it for many many months.

Of course they did, since it affected that area the most.

On this day: Patriotism mixed with prayer as Americans packed churches and clogged public squares on a day of remembrance for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. President George W. Bush prayed with his Cabinet and attended services at Washington National Cathedral, then flew to New York, where he waded into the ruins of the World Trade Center and addressed rescue workers in a flag-waving, bullhorn-wielding show of resolve. Officials announced the Pentagon would call up as many as 50,000 members of the National Guard and Reserve.

On this date ten years ago, MLB pitcher Darryl Kile passed away at age 33 from a coronary artery blockage. :\'( :\'( Kile, who'd pitched a game for the St. Louis Cardinals four days earlier, had begun his career with the Houston Astros in the early 1990s, and went to the Colorado Rockies in 1998 and 1999 before coming to the Cardinals.
Cubs catcher Joe Girardi announced at Wrigley Field that the afternoon's game versus the Cardinals had been canceled, though he did not announce that the cancellation was prompted by Kile's death. Girardi tearfully gave the news at 2:37 p.m. CDT, broadcast regionally on Fox: "I thank you for your patience. We regret to inform you because of a tragedy in the Cardinal family, that the commissioner has canceled the game today. Please be respectful. You will find out eventually what has happened, and I ask that you say a prayer for the St. Louis Cardinals' family." The game was rescheduled and made up later in the year on August 31, a 10-4 Cardinal defeat.
The Cardinals honored Kile by placing a small "DK 57" sign in the home bullpen. This sign was carried over to the new Busch Stadium and remains today. The team wrote "DK 57" on their hats. The team put chalk and markers in the Busch Stadium concourses so fans could write similar messages on their caps. Since his death, no Cardinal player has worn the number 57.

Advice columnist Ann Landers also passed away (age 83).

March 20th 2003 – 2003 invasion of Iraq: In the early hours of the morning, the United States and three other countries began military operations in Iraq.

I remember that very well; it was all over the news. ::)

And I remember that I had just taken a midterm in a software-engineering class that I ended up doing not-so-well in. I was taking two other classes, but doing well in them. One was a math class, and the other was a symbolic logic course.

Yep, that's him. I wrote more detail about it in the "Today in the History of Sport" thread. I even remember seeing the play when it was live on TV. Alou was "livid with the fan", as commentator Thom Brenneman said when the botched play occurred.

The Red Sox were in the ALCS that year (against the Yankees), looking to advance to the World Series for the first time in 17 years, and capture their first title in 85 years...but they, too, fell short of getting there, even in game seven. (Their title would have to wait another year.)

And I also remember that I was relieved to be finished with my toughest academic semester of college. However, that weekend I took home a career assessment exam to possibly see about going a different direction. Those were the days...

I also remember posting my first quiz on this board at around that time. I was inspired by the "find a pair of artists with songs of the same title" quizzes, so I decided to create my own one of those.

that day not to be forgotten.  :(

And all during the following week, his body was taken across the country and back. On the 7th, two days after his passing, his body was transported to the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA, for a brief private funeral ceremony, and lay there for two more days, whereupon it was flown across the country to Washington, DC, to "lie in state" for public viewing. Finally, on the morning of the 11th, a state funeral was conducted in the Washington National Cathedral, and presided over by then-President George W. Bush (who had declared that day a National Day of Mourning). The casket was immediately flown back across the U.S. to California, and ultimately laid to rest at his Presidential Library.

I also lived through the time he served as President, even though it accounted for most of my childhood. Also, he's the first U.S. president who I have memories of (seeing in the news, on tv, etc.), given that I was only six months old when he took office.

As for other Presidential Libraries, there are 12 others currently in existence, and they are in various U.S. states, mainly the state where the president had established residency. (For example, the most recent Presidential Library to open was that of George W. Bush, who lived in Texas, just like his father, George H.W. Bush.)

January 26, 2005: The 2005 Glendale Train Crash

On January 26, 2005, at 6:03 a.m. PST, southbound Metrolink commuter train #100 collided with a suv that had been abandoned on the tracks immediately south of the Chevy Chase Drive grade crossing and near a Costco retail store on the Glendale-Los Angeles boundary, in an industrial area, north of downtown Los Angeles. The train jackknifed and struck trains on either side of it—one a stationary Union Pacific freight train, and the other a northbound Metrolink train (#901) traveling in the opposite direction. The chain-reaction collisions resulted in the deaths of 11 people. Among the first responders to the accident were employees of the Costco store, adjacent to the accident site, who placed calls to 9-1-1 and climbed the bordering fence to aid the victims.

Juan Manuel Álvarez, who left his Jeep Cherokee Sport vehicle parked on the tracks, was arrested and charged with 11 counts of murder with "special circumstances." Authorities and Álvarez's legal defense claimed Álvarez was planning to commit suicide, but changed his mind at the last minute. Álvarez was convicted in June 2008 of the eleven counts plus one count of arson, and though prosecutors sought a death sentence, was sentenced in August 2008 to 11 consecutive life sentences in prison with no possibility of parole.

A total of 11 passengers were killed in the collision, while between 100 and 200 people were injured. In terms of casualties, the crash had the same death toll as the Bourbonnais train accident on March 15, 1999, making it the deadliest U.S. train crash in almost six years.

(Nine years later, in 2014, Game Two between the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals would also go 18 innings, but break the record for longest MLB postseason game in terms of time, at 6 hours and 23 minutes.)
