I think music was probably the least thing to change about the 2000s.

Agreed.  90s music carried over until 2008 or so.

I think most can agree that 2008 was a very changeful year that transitioned the late 00's to the early 10's(and effectively killed off any 90's holdovers still left). Fashion, music, the economy, and politics changed that year, people went from wearing baggy jeans, grills, bling to tight colorful jeans, neon plaid, vests, v neck/graphic tees,(and for african-american men, a mohawk/fade hybrid). I haven't seen a year that music changed so much in a LONG TIME, overnight urbanpop/crunk/glam rap and the way waaay overdone post-grunge(this is probably the "90's" music that was carried over to the 00's) was overtaken by electropop/dance music, dance-rap, and disneypop. I remember the first time I saw Lady Gaga in late '08, I had a feeling she would be changing pop culture. And then the economy of course took a nose dive in late '08.

I agree - 2008 was a very turbulent year in general. However, I think some of those styles you mentioned were already in style before 2008. For example, women were already wearing skinny jeans and skin-tight clothing prior to 2008, and I also believe graphic tees were already in style before then.

I pretty much agree with everything else, though. I think mohawks for black men was in style from late 2008 until 2009. I don't see that much anymore.

Yeah, but if someone's willing to put the effort into making a video of it, I say we roll with it.  What good's nostalgia if new users can't enjoy it too?

I get offended people say that I mean Britney Spears never would have been big in 1995 or 1996. Come on! There is differences between 1993-1996, 1997-1998, and 1999-2000 music,

Lady GaGa or Ke$ha would never have been popular in the crunk era. Does anybody seriously think that California Gurls would have been a number 1 back in 2004? Could you imagine "Lean Wit It Rock Wit It" on 2010 pop radio? I couldn't.

Katy Perry's "Hot and Cold" song is even more 80's than California Girls.  :(

Tis true. Music has really started to change in the past two years. We're seeing shades of what the 10s will be like musically. We're currently in that weird transitional period in between decades where you have elements of the previous decade overlapping with the elements of the next decade.

As for 90s vs 00s,  The 00s wern't very similar to the 90s at all, except for 1998-1999 when the transition into the 00s began. Sure fashion and SOME music was similar, but the 00s had a TOTALLY different vibe from the 90s. The 2000s were very materialistic, slick, and cheesy, (much like the 80s), while the 90s were very organic, straightforward, and subdued. The 10s might have a similar vibe to the 90s because of this. Either way, as several others have noted, the 2000s will date very badly in the 10s and will be heavily mocked/backlashed.

I'm not sure about #1 but I think "California Gurls" could have been in the top 10 at least. Gwen Stefani was around at the time and her style was somewhat similar. In 2010, there was this terrible rapper called Waka Flocka Flame, and he makes Soulja Boy look good by comparison.

1997-1998 rap was big because of Puff Daddy and Will Smith being big during that time. Also I remember DMX, Mase,  and Busta Ryhmes were big around that time too. I remember the LL Cool J-Canibus fued too. Those were good times!

1999 was all about teen-pop and nu-metal.

Wasn;t? Remember the David Lee Rother cover of "The Beach Boys" "California Girls" not to be confused with Katy Perry's same song title of her own version of it.

David Lee Roth's version was a bit more sexier.
