Subject: Which had a bigger impact in the 00s, Myspace or Facebook?

Written By: joeman on 12/11/10 at 11:10 am

Which social network had the most impact on the 12-24 audience in the 00s overall?  Myspace became huge in like 05 and soon after, it was referenced in every media outlet.  Facebok came along roughly the same time, but initially with college students.  Ever since 08 or so, Facebook has became top dog and people laugh if you have Myspace now.

I never had any desire to sign up for Myspace because it didn't really seem to interest me. But I did eventually start using Facebook a year and a half ago, after my mom invited me to join. In retrospect, part of me wishes that I'd joined FB earlier (maybe 2006/07) but I guess it wasn't as popular then as it is now. I enjoy it. It has also helped me to reconnect with friends from my past.

I remember how huge Myspace was when I was in high school in 2005. I had no interest in it back then. I'd say Myspace was popular in the mid 00's, but Facebook stole the spotlight and became huge in the late 00's.

Facebook has made an enormous impact in the world of electronic communication. It seems now the Facebook pages are set up instead of domain website on the Internet.

I remember when Myspace was huge. I set up my own Myspace account in 2007, I think. It's still there, but I seldom use it anymore.

I think Facebook has had a bigger impact. You can find practically anybody you know or used to know on FB. It's helped so many people keep in touch with current friends and reconnect with old ones.

Not only is FB a great place for socialization, but it's also popularly used as an event organizer, be that event political or simply social.

Facebook has had a huge impact on popular culture.

MySpace is a way for people to say:  "Hey, let me overload my profile with large GIF images, so when you come visit my page, your computer will crash"

Facebook is a way for people to say:  "I need you to come join my Mafia, or help my crops on Farmville, or invite me to play some game that I just ignore"

lol

Then what's Twitter?

Then what's Twitter?
Twitter is a website, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., which offers a social networking and microblogging service, enabling its users to send and read other users' messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page. Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other users' tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as followers.

Facebook, because it's newer!  ;D

To be more serious, Myspace was popular for only a few years and then came Facebook and Twitter and Myspace never became as big again for some reason.

I think Twitter and Facebook are equally influential.

Facebook. It had a movie made on it, dammit!

Myspace came and went rediculously quickly. It was huge in 2005-2007, then around 2008 everyone just abandoned it for facebook overnight.

Facebook is/was just superior to Myspace. Superior reliability and privacy settings especially.

I once heard a rumour that Facebook was set up by the CIA or the FBI.

Maybe, but probably not.  But it's useful enough that if it weren't set up as part of the old Total Information Awareness programme, it would immediately be co-opted as part of the Terrorist Information Awareness programme.

I've got nothing to hide, nothing to fear, but I also have no use for social networking.  Nailing the people who do have stuff to hide, and things to fear, is one of the few good uses for the technology.

Myspace in the early-mid 00s, Facebook in the late 00s.  I remember Myspace being big from about 2004-07, and Facebook took the crown from then on.  Facebook started out as an exclusive site only for college students and remained that way until 2006 I believe.

Chatrooms still exist; I know they do on FB, but you're not on there.

There also used to be a chatty feature on this site (in late 2005, I believe), which was Ajax-based and anyone could type in goofy names.

If memory serves me correctly, FB started out for college/school students, and MS seemed to come along as the answer for everyone else. I set up a FB account and used it maybe once, then went to MS. Soon, I had mutual friends with both sites and eventually stopped using MS, as everyone had so much crap running on their pages that it made me wonder if I was trying to conect to the internet with AOL 4.0!

I used to go on MySpace to chat/message with friends, and to post blogs, but I haven't been there since last year. So I spend more time on Facebook than on my MySpace. That way I can chat with friends a whole lot better and Facebook is very dependable, too. I enjoyed my friends and family members around there too.

My mom joined FB in late 2008 or thereabouts to reconnect with some of her high school classmates, and then invited me to join; I finally accepted the invitation in June 2009. My dad, on the other hand, has no desire to join, mostly because he "doesn't have time" for it, and one other reason which I forget.

I read in the paper today that Myspace is firing 500 employees. If there isn't a surer sign about a decline in popularity, I can't speak anymore about it. It just shows you that trends of the Internet are better measured by year than decade.
