it dates back before the 2000s, but the music video is what really ignited it's spread.

Front. Page. Roar.

Yes, the Hamster Dance, and the Dancing Baby predated it, but it wasn't until 2011 and ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US - from the game Zero Wing - was the first thing that truly went viral.

A randomg googling for AYBABTU returns the classics.

There were no meme generators, so someone had to crank up Photoshop and do this:

or this:

And someone who was really good with Photoshop, and who remembered the 3 Budweiser Girls (a classic of late-80s .GIF files), pulled this off:

I'm assuming this was 'shoped, but I've seen that company on eBay, and they've been around long enough they might have done it for a few moments as a stunt.

Even if you didn't have Photoshop:

...you could join in the fun:

Uphill, both ways!  In the snow!  For great justice!  (That's how we moved ZIG back in the day.)

that was the best part of this meme... when it ceased to be photoshop'ed and turned into real life examples. A company along one of the highways in Mass. put up "All Your Base" in the windows of the building. The picture from the opening game sequence showed up on the television screens on a Sunday newspaper ad flyer.

I've still got a shirt I bought from someone with the saying on it. or at least I think I do.
