Subject: I miss the early-to-mid 00s

Written By: FifiLeFume on 04/18/11 at 4:48 pm

I was born in 1988 so I'm techically a 90's kid, however, I always stayed away from most 90's culture and I didn't like it. I hated Spice Girls and found Britney to be annoying. Besides, I grew up with Cartoon Network and I generally prefered older shows like The Flintstones, Tom & Jerry, Scooby Doo, Josie and the Pussycats, etc. to most 90's ones (except Dexter and the Powerpuff Girls that I liked). Most people my age feel nostalgia for th 90's but I don't! I feel nostalgia for the early-to-mid 00s (2001-2004) when most 90's trends like teen pop were out. Is that normal? I also prefer 80's and 70's music over the 90's one. Early-to-mid 00's music was also good. I don't like the late 00's-now however. Does any of you miss 2001-2004?

You were 13-16 in that time, of course you are going to be nostalgic.  People get nostalgic about their teen years the most.

I know how you feel. I just had my birthday last week and for me it felt so weird turning another year older. I felt like everything around me is changing, such as going through my first midlife crisis, and I'm finding myself wishing that I went back to all of my younger years. And yes, I also miss 2001-2004 as well. Those were the best years for me. And I also miss 2006-2008. The only obstacle about 2001-2002 I faced is when I was heartbroken back in college.

I was born in 85, and I miss the early 2000s also.  2000-2002 were still my kid years, but the best times of my life was 2003-2004 when I was on my own and did so many things.  Met new friends, lost my virginity, had a first full-time job, attending college, going to concerts, etc...I think the best parts of that era was with friends hanging out and never worrying about aging.  I am still very young, but God, sometimes I wish I was 19 again.

I miss 2004 and 2005, but not so much 2001-03. The early 2000's was a hard time for events in the States, and in my personal life. I didn't much care for the pop culture either. 2000 and 2001 pre-9/11 was better though (especially 2000), but I would consider that an extension of the late 90's (another time I miss). I also liked 2008 and 2009, despite the recession. The pop culture was good and I was enjoying my life.

I kinda miss the 2000s simply because my childhood took place back then. But the years i'll miss most is 2000-2005. 2006 and up kinda sucked compared to those years IMO.

Those were my high school years exactly pretty much. Though I didn't really like high school that much I miss it a bit now since it's 6-10 years ago. 2000 is separate from the rest, I was still in middle school then Clinton was still president and 9/11 obviously had not occurred yet. 2000 seems especially old to me now.

2001-2004?  2004 was pretty decent, but late 2001-2003 weren't good times for my personal life.  I label 9/11 as the end of my childhood, though it really ended a few weeks prior to that with starting school at a junior high with zero of my old friends.  That said, I admit that I do get nostalgic for and miss certain things from that era, while other things I have no nostalgia for whatsoever.  It doesn't have the rose-tinted nostalgia of the 90s, 2000, and first half of 2001.  As far as pop culture as a whole, I actually find the mid-00s to be more nostalgic than late 2001-2003!

I do think though that had I been older and in a different life situation, I would have felt decently comfortable in the era, though at odds with the very fearful and conservative drift in the country at the time.  Bad timing on the part of my life, I guess.

I feel you on the earlier part of the decade, as I had a lot of trouble at school, one to the point where I was kicked out.  HS always sucked to me and whenever I try to look at that period, I try to think of the music rather than the BS classrooms and gossips that went around then.  Again 2003-2004 was probably my favorite year but I think it is more due to being at the right age.  If I was 19 in say 2007, I probably wouldn't care so much of the earlier part of the decade.

I was 19 in 2007 and I hated it! I hated that I had to end high school. We were so close. I hate my university peers. i wish the years 2007-2011 never happened.
I really miss 2001 (like 01/01/2001 - 09/10/2001 before 9/11), before 9/11 it was a terrific year and my personal life was so simpler and just better. I don't miss 2002 at all because I had some troubles, but 2003-2005 were the best years in my life so far. They still are. God, my life is so pathetic, I hate it sometimes.

I miss the early '00s too.  With the exception of 2001 which was a crappy year, it was one of the best times of my life.  I miss 2000 and 2003 the most.  I was 15 in 2000 so I am a little older than you, but I didn't get into pop culture until the very late 90s.  Much like you, I listened to mostly older music and watched older shows though the 90s (with the exception of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers).  I graduated high school in 2004 and it was all down hill from there.  I wish I could go back to high school graduation and do my life over again.

i miss early 00s!! my first days of elementary school!! my family fortune turn very good as well so i had a good experience... i miss the late 1990s and early 00s culture basically...  late 1990s and early 2000s were the best times in the western world... 9/11 shakes everything but the effect only started to creep in towards 2003 with the iraq war... weird thing is i dont miss the era from 2002 onwards... i guess thats when i have realizations of reality in the world i live in...

i do find boy/girl bands corny... except few nostalgia songs they sing which is inevitable for me to not fall for it :p

I was born in 1991 and I miss that time a lot. 2000-2004 was great. I mean it had its downs, 9/11, the war, dale Earnhardt dieing sucked. I was 9-13 and I was just different. Back then I wasn't afraid to get in trouble. I mean I didn't go out and do stuff that was really stupid but I did stuff that pissed older people off like egg people's cars or whatever you and your buddies had come up with. That's the one time that everything worked as far as where I lived was perfect, my friends were close, the music was good, school was good even though I hated goin. I wasn't as shy as I am now. Then my buddies all moved away and I got shy didn't talk much and by the end of that decade I was completely different. Shy, scared to get in trouble which costs you some fun. I used to live by do this now without permission and ask forgiveness later. I didn't care so much so I didn't worry. Now I wear myself out worrying about crap. I can't get that time back but I'm working on having an attitude close to what I had back then because I was better at everything then when I could just relax but anyway that was a special time for me. I miss it

I was watching an episode of Penn and Teller's Bullsheesh from 2003 and I gotta say, it looked shockingly old. They went to a UFO convention and all of the old people there still had those huge 80's style glasses and the computers were all really old looking. The way young people dressed then doesn't look that dated though, because some people still dress like that but one difference would be absolutely no emo and scene kids in 2003, well very few at least.

Because after that length of time that era passes into being legendary to people younger than 18.

I really liked the 2002-2005 era! Loved '04-'05, those were some really good years in my life. Somehow, it seemed that era were simpler times, everything is so complicated these days. I liked the music that came out at the time. They were some happy years for me. Television was different then, That 70's Show, Friends were pretty hot. Clothing in those years was pretty cool too. I do miss that era. 2002 is 10 years ago now? hard to believe, it seemed so cutting edge!! Now, 2002 seems classical to me.

I feel like it takes about 15-20 years for a time to be nostalgic, though it could be as little as 11 if it slices through a whole era for example 1988 to 1999 is a big enough difference to warrant nostalgia.

And what doesn't make sense? Get out your calculator. Logic would have it, that after 2012 comes 2013. 2013 -2003 = 10. In Janaury 2013 (only two months away, plus some days, if you apply basic mathematics) Janaury 2003 will therefore be 10 years ago. Janaury 2002 will be 11 years ago. Keep your calculator ready. 2003 - 2002 = 1. Many people over the age of 10 years old would be able to figure that out. Are you over the age of 10 years old yet? Can you count to ten? If not, I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't make sense to you. But I'm sure a lot of people that come here actually made it passed fifth grade or an equivalent education level.

The early-mid 00s were an interesting time.

Pluto stopped being considered a planet.

Each to their own, but there is probably more than one personal generation.

You have a personal generation for pre-adolescence, one for post, and one for your early adult years.

Of course, this can mean you lived through a time when Pluto was considered a planet, then not a planet.

I miss the years between 1996 to 2004 (with the exception of the year 2000, I was in third grade and hated my teacher who was a major bitch AND my father passed away that year). I love 90s culture because to me it felt more genuine than what came in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Music was better because artists used instruments and didn't rely on digitizing their sounds. If you don't know what I'm talking about, listen to some songs from the 70s and 90s on vinyl. However movies weren't all that memorable from the late 90s but 1999 had some pretty good films, however they good better in 2001 and 2002.
I do get nostalgia about the years 2001-2004 because it was my late childhood early teen years and I had some good times then. The years between 2005-2007 really sucked for me because of problems in my family and switching high schools and being surrounded by a bunch of superficial preppies. Plus the politics was not good, in fact depressing because of the War in Iraq and Bush/Cheney fudgeing up the government. And i hated the music, pretty much everything people listened to was pop, ear bleeding death metal, sheeshty hip hop, and bad covers of older songs that were auto-tuned to death. They were a lot of good artists, especially in the alternative genre and a lot of rap was still good like Eminem. The good stuff that wasn't well known at the time is starting to get more notice each year, thank god. It makes me sick to think about people getting nostalgic over things like miley cyrus. 2008-2009 were pretty good because I finished high school and started college which meant I was around normal people again.

But yeah the early 2000s were the best years  have experienced because cartoons were still awesome and i was starting to get into rap and alternative. I do not remember much of the early 90s but I remember bits and pieces of the grunge scene and early nickelodeon.

I however do think there is more than nostalgia when it comes to the 90s and early 2000s, I think it has to do with how like was generally better (with the exception of events like 9/11, columbine, and oklahoma city bombing) people were during those years. The latter part of the 2000s and 2010s had to deal with the bad economy, two wars, constant talk about terrorism, a government that refuses to get sheesh done because of party lines, more massecres like V-tech and Sandy Hook, and just a breakdown of society. The 2000s felt like a repeat of the 70s because a lot of people weren't happy or were trying to find happiness in a time where everything just seemed to go to hell.

I was born in '94, meaning the peak of my childhood was 2001-2004. I do miss those times dearly, mostly the music and the tv shows that I watched. Yes 9/11 was terrible and so was the start of the Iraq War, but I still had a great childhood nonetheless. I especially miss 2002, 2004, and the early half of 2001. In the summer of '01, I won a dance competition and had lots of good times with my cousins. During 2002 I went to Europe with my family and I loved watching the show Home Movies with my older cousin. 2003 sucked because I moved to Texas and had to readjust, but that changed about half way through 2004, when I had my first kiss and made lots of great friends.

00s music was sheesh in my eyes, and still is. However, I'm shocked that I'm going to miss the 00s, even the late 00s.

I guess it was my teen decade so I do have a connection to it.

2000 to 2004 was okay but my life started to take a nosedive starting in late 2004. '04 started my decade from hell, an era that I am now thankfully out of.

I will look back many, many, many decades from now and look at 2004 to 2013/2014 as an era where I lost my innocence.

I miss the early-to-mid 2000's as well. I consider the peak of my childhood to be 2001-2006, so that's 3 years in the early 2000's vs. 3 years in the mid-2000's.

Throughout the early 2000's I can come up with several things I enjoyed, I used to buy Planet Hot Wheels cars, merchandise, CD-ROM's, and I would get on the website, buy new gadgets and upgrades for my cars and play with folks around the world. I was a BIG Legos guy, I would watch those Lego commercials on TV and ask my parents for some more, I remember when I was like 6 and I knew how to build those things on my own, it was easy and Lego Star Wars ships were pretty epic as well. 2001-2003 were my earliest memories of going to movies throughout my childhood, Shrek, Spy Kids 1-3, Spiderman, Lilo & Stitch, Ice Age, Powerpuff Girls movie, Harry Potter, Monster's Inc, Finding Nemo, etc. 2001 was the first year I started watching Cartoon Network and that channel was so epic with the classic checkerboard logo and watching Cartoon Cartoons every Friday & weekends, I was able to catch the premieres of Samurai Jack, Grim & Evil, and Justice League when those were brand new, watching Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, and more classics on there, Toonami was epic as well. 2001-2003 will always be my favorite 3 years for Cartoon Network looking back. Toon Disney, Nickelodeon, and Kids WB were just as epic at the time as well. Every Friday we would go onto my Grandma's house on my mom's side and we would hang out with my cousins every weekend, we would do tons of stuff together, whether we'd go out to the mall, movies, or stay in the house and play freeze tag with each other, but we can't do that now because we have more responsibilities. I also remember going to my aunt's wedding in Summer 2002, and after that wedding we went on the limousine and traveled to the wedding reception, and I was dancing on the music floor to the Cha-Cha slide, that was fun.

The mid-2000's, 2004, I finished 2nd grade and started 3rd grade, and it was one of the best summers in my lifetime because it was my first plane ride, I remember getting up in the middle of midnight, which was weird to be at the time, and we went out of the country to Jamaica, and that was one of my favorite trips of my childhood. I remember when the plane had took off, I was really nervous but then I relaxed eventually. I remember when I was up there, we got on the bus with this real dark skinned Jamaican dude, and I remember how fast the bus had went and of course up there we were driving on the left side of the road rather than right like our country. He was talking about all the culture and stuff. But I remember how EPIC the food was as well, there was this buffet we went to every morning and night when we were down there, probably the best patties, doubled eggs, and jerk wings I had in my entire lifetime, haven't had any that good ever since. The Incredibles, Spiderman 2, Sharktale, and White Chicks were my favorite movies from that year! Jump to summer 2006 and I went to Disney World, it was a surprise trip and my parents didn't tell us, we stayed in a big Double Tree hotel room, and we went to the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, MGM Studios, and that last park I always forget. I remember how awesome that Space Mountain ride was it was pretty fun. I remember going to this talent show around MGM Studios and it was a bunch of people performing stunts and stuff around the ring of fire, that was slick too. Throughout the mid-00's, my favorite channels on TV was the Jetix era of Toon Disney, Cartoon Network City which was pretty fye especially that epic 2005 Summer, Nickelodeon when they had new shows like Drake & Josh, Ned's Declassified, Danny Phantom, Catscratch, and Avatar: the Last Airbender, those were some awesome shows that premiered around the time. (despite many 90's nicktoons ending by 2004), Kids WB still maintained good programming until 2006, and WWE wrestling match ups were pretty fun and entertaining for me as a kid.

Yes I get pretty nostalgic for both the the early and mid 00s years!
My childhood indeed did begin in the late 90s but it's main time was during the early -mid 00s years( 2000-2005/06ish)Despite the tragedy of 9/11 :\'(  and Bush taking over from Clinton, i loved the early 2000s years(2001-2003 specifically). It was a good time to be a kid. I still played my N64 and Gameboy advanced. CN/Nickelodeon/Kids WB/Disney/Toon disney/PBS kids, WWF/WWE, Fox kids was still around for a little bit. Those years had the best music(Glam and bling bling Rap,Hard Rock) and video games of the decade. Oh and the adult TV shows at the time too(West Wing,CSI,Law and Order,Friends,That 70s Show,Simpsons) At the end of the shcool year when I was in kindergarten we did a tribute to america after the tragedy of September 11! Playing with legos were a thing! Watching Disney movies on VHS over the summer were big fro me! Kickball became a hobby of mine! I went to Branson Missouri in 2002! I went to Chicago from 2000-2003 during the summer and still go to this day over the summer! Everybody moved on from PS1 and got Ps2's but many like myself still played N64 during the early 2000s!

I know that I'm on complete minority on this one, but politically/lifestyle wise the mid 2000s was the best time for me as an older kid, a damn good economy,I FINALLY got PS2 and XBOX during these years, Cartoon Network was still the bomb. Wrestling was still entertaining during the later half of the ruthless aggression era. Movies however weren't that great and TV was nowhere near as good as before but still good. My personal/kid life was just the best it had ever been. My life started to change when I moved to the suburbs when I was 8 in 03, I was starting to get a bit older during this time! I could now do more outdoor activites. Riding my bike and scooter! Helping my parents and grandparents get the leaves up on the yard! I went tricker treating from 2003-2005!Watching Jetix and teen nick were a thing I'd do! Disney continued it's glory days; until 06 when HSm and Hannah Monatan came! 8-P I just loved going out doors and playing football, kickball, tag, basketball, and baseball with my cousins and friends ANY time they came over!! PS2 and XBOX were GREAT! I started to collect DVDs!] :D I joined a little leauge baseball team and played BBall in 3rd and 4th grade!!

I miss the peak kid year early 2000s and my older kid mid 2000s years!! to quote tony the tiger,''They were GRREAT!!''

I'm with both of you. The early 00s seems one of the best periods (along with others) despite 9/11 changing everything. During this era, I was still a casual gamer ranging from Nintendo, Sega, PlayStation and Xbox. I had most of the consoles including the current ones at the time. Nick/Disney/CN were at their best. I watched all 3 channels and it didn't matter to me who the target audience was for any show airing on those channels. In addition, my family and I had many family parties and they were magnificent.

I went outside everyday going to the park, hanging with friends and did other activities. If I was inside, i'd play console/PC games, draw and color, build legos/other things and watch TV. This era is also when I was in elementary school which spanned from 1st to 5th grade although I began puberty in the 4th grade.

For the mid 00s, this is when I began middle school and met most of my friends I still have today. This was a huge change for me as no more recess and now I had a class schedule. I associate that time period with adolescence as I didn't feel like a kid anymore.

In general of that era, the music was wonderful. It was still diverse despite rap/hip-hop being mostly popular. I listened to many artists and it seems they had a more of a connection to music than some of today's artists. Moreover, there wasn't any auto-tune; it didn't seem generic and it had a great melody. I can listen to songs from that era and replay them again and again. Now for the fashion, I see that a majority say the fashion was awful and cringe-worthy; however, I have to disagree. While there was some horrendous styles, some were actually comfortable and marvelous. I appreciate that reality TV wasn't overboard like it is today although there was some such as Fear Factor, American Idol and Laguna Beach. Last, the economy was off the hook. It was still awesome and I able to buy more items than I can today.

I feel like the early 00s were underrated in general when it comes to nostalgia.

Honestly and truthfully I do. It even pushed me to the point of becoming a temporary writer. I been working on a story for a good while now that's set in the Early 2000s. I'm so grateful the characters and enemies I came up with blend in ridiculously perfect.

Wow, it looks SO 2000s. Back when TeenNick was still called The N and pretty much everything else was cool.

Wow, they look so cheezy. Even as a 2000s kid, I find those TV movies to be awkward, IMO. But that's probably coming from my view, as I liked their cartoons more than their live-action crap.

It's kinda true that this cover was made in 1999, but it still looks like it came from 2000 or pre-June 11, 2001 (that was the date when the GBA came out in the U.S.).

True but they're pretty cheesy by today's standards but they were sure awesome to watch as a kid!

Here's a video of what they used to show right before the DCOMS back in the day or should I say Zoog Movie:

I did not watch Zoog Disney that much when I was younger, I was only towards the beginning of my 1st grade year when it switched over to just plain "Disney Channel", but I do remember that logo though that's how I know. For a while I was a huge Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Toon Disney, and Kids WB fan at the time.

This was Summer 2002 Cartoon Network for me in a nutshell during the weeknights....

I remember when my dad first got this truck when it was brand new, a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT he got it in Christmas 2001. He replaced his old early 199? Geo Prism. He gave the truck to me once I got my driver's license 3 years ago. I still drive it today although it's starting to get real old now :-[

Zoog Disney was what I went to bed to from ages 4-6! After watching Cartoon Network and Nick on primetime, and even some adult tv, I was always tucked in watching Zoog Disney or animated VHS tapes. They would show Zoro episodes from the 50s and classic disney cartoons. Let me tell ya something that was friggin AMAZING!

Well Disney Channel has always ran through the midnight as long as I can remember, and even when Zoog Disney was around it did that of course. But even when Zoog Disney was around back then, Cartoon Network at the time was still mostly 24 hours everyday. So during the summer time or school breaks around 2001 or 2002. You had the choice to turn to Cartoon Network at night watching (Cartoon Cartoon) Primetime or old school cartoons at midnight, or you could go to Zoog Disney and watch sitcoms all night long including reruns of syndicated ones as well. NICK @ NITE has always been around for awhile too, but back then I think that didn't even start until like 10pm or 11pm. Most of these are from 2001 or 2002 and probably looks real familiar to you since you have a great memory.

Lol same! They all bring me back to innocent times  :)  :\'(, when every Saturday morning I would wake up real early, pour myself some cereal, turn on the tv and watch Kids WB, ABC One Saturday Morning, UPN's One Too, & or Fox Kids/Box.

Also how everyday after school I would quickly do my homework, make a PB&J Sandwich and watch PBS Kids, Toonami or Kids WB in the evenings.

OMG those days bring me back  8)

I watched Kids WB the most out of all of those (2001-early 2006) which maintained great programming and variety for awhile and had the best bumpers in its heyday, I watched One Saturday Morning/ABC Kids sometimes but I wished I didn't take that for granted while it was in its prime before it became a Disney Channel clone, I remember House of Mouse being on there too but I saw more reruns on Toon Disney though, I hardly, I mean hardly ever if not at all watched FOX Kids/FoX BoX

Yeah Kids WB and One Saturday Morning was my jam as a kid. However I do vaguely remember Fox Kids a few times when I was like 3 or 4, but IDK I was more of a WB kid. BTW, what was your guys favorite show(s) on each of these networks? For me my favorite on Kids WB probably has to be either Pokemon or YuGiOh, One Saturday probably Recess, Fox Kids probably Spiderman TAS.
