Subject: 2005

What stands out to you about the year 2005? What movies, music, events do you remember most? There have been a lot of discussions about 2006 and 2004, but 2005 seems like the "forgotton year". Would you associate 2005 more with the early 00's or late 00's culture?

I remember I loved 2005 while it was going on. It's the last year I'd say has more in common with the earlier '00s than the later '00s, but it was also the dawn of some later '00s things (Rihanna, emo, T-Pain). I remember liking Green Day, Kelly Clarkson, Ciara, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, The Killers, Rihanna, and even some 50 Cent and Pussycat Dolls lol.

era of 2004-2007 is purely the 00's that can be neither associated with early or late 00s but yes 2005 has more common with early 00s

I like 2005, music was still good

Based on the technology (I used), it has more in common with the earlier half of the '00's:

-Using film for photography was still common. I used both, digital and anolog... and I still got a normal film SLR camera for Christmas in 2004.
-I didn't fully switch to digital-only-photography before 2007, when I bought my first DSLR
-Social networks were not as big as they were in the late '00's and nearly none of my friends used one.
-Pre-Facebook-time, and even though Youtube existed in 2005, I haven't discoverd it until 2006/07.
-HD was as good as not existing in German TV and most stations still broadcasted in 4:3 ratio and not 16:9 ratio.
-I used only printed maps for driving instead of GPS

But finally it's nearer to the late '00's than it is to the culture of let's say the year 2000.

2005 mainstream music in North America?  Not my cup of tea.
2005 mainstream music in Europe?  Now we're talking!  Europe knew how to do it, and I thank the UK for this gem that topped my list of the greatest songs of that decade ...

I was 10 in 2005 but i remember being Obsessed with Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day. I also remember songs like Candy Shop, Hollaback Girl, Gold Digger, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Speed Of Sound, Since U Been Gone, Feel Good Inc.,Welcome To My Life, and Holiday. This is the year i was introduced to music

I Was big on video games this year since i got a Game Boy Advance SP with Pokemon Emerald (i already had a GBA) and my first home console the GameCube with Super Smash Bros. Melee. i still have gaming magazines from that year and the games coming out back then are 10x better than the ones today. I played alot of Pokemon this year especially Yellow/FireRed/LeafGreen/Emerald. Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon cards were also a hot item for me along with Beyblades,Battle B-Damons, and Transformers. I started watching InuYasha, Gundam Seed and Naruto on YTV during the channel's last good year. I Started reading GamePro, EGM and Nintendo Power this year so i could find out what games to buy. I moved into my current house in November of that year (its now 7 years)

Overall 2005 is my favorite year of the 2000s 10/10

2005 was sorta a transitional year for music as well. More of a small transition and not nearly as big as the one in 2008. But here are some of the songs that were popular in 2005. Black Eyed Peas and Gwen Steffani first come to my mind when I hear 2005 in terms of mainstream music.

2005 is the core 00s year, just like 1985 and 1995 were for the 80s and 90s.
Too soon to be nostalgic yet, but I like it.
Biggest artists of the year were: Kelly Clarkson, 50 Cent, Nickelback, Coldplay, Green Day, Gwen Stefani, The Black Eyed Peas, Fall Out Boy and many more.

2005 is interesting in retrospect. To me its the last year that feels a twinge of old school. Like where there was still a little bit of a leftover 90s vibe, AND since it predated social networking. I know Myspace began getting popular that year, but it hadn't quite really taken off yet.

I don't think music in 2005 was terrible at all, I mean you had Gwen, The Killers, Green Day, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah, Gorillaz, Rob Thomas, Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay...lots of good music in 2005 and nowhere near as much terrible music as 2007 had.

The most memorable thing in music in 2005 was Green Day's explosive return to popularity.  Green Day dominated the musical sound of 2005.  It was also the beginning of the ringtone rap era.  Technologically, it had more in common with the early 2000s than today in my opinion.  There were still more users of dial-up than broadband, and sites like Facebook and Youtube were around but most people hadn't heard of them.  Myspace was big for teenagers but if you were over 17 you probably didn't know about it.  Desktop PCs were still popular and laptops were just starting to outsell desktops.  Smart phones didn't exist and tablets were clumsy and archaic.  PC gaming was at its peak.  As for movies, the most memorable for me was Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith.  That movie was epic when I saw it the first time at midnight on its release date.

Brit was starting to show 'cracks' starting in 2004 when she married her friend in Vegas for 55 hours, then in the summer of 2004 she was caught in a public bathroom without footwear on. She dated K-Fed and was with him until late 2006 I think.

But her true breakdown years were 2006 and 2007.

As some have already pointed out, between Hurricane Katrina, the London terror attacks, and the deteriorating Iraq War situation, there's certainly alot not to like about 2005, but it was a decent year pop culturally, and the one thing you cant forget about is how significant a year it was in terms of technological advancements.

2005 saw the rise of MySpace and the social networking craze, the creation of YouTube and it's massive impact that followed, the release of the PSP and iPod Video which brought both portable video and portable internet browsing to a larger number of people, as well as the launch of the Xbox 360 which started the era of HD gaming.

In alot of ways, 2005 was sort of the beginning of the technological world we live in today.

I was 20 years old in 2005.  I liked late teens/early 20s years because that is when I started doing all these crazy things I couldn't do when I was a kid.  I was listening to 80s music at the time, which was getting popular throughout the 2000s.  I was in college and used to be in parties all the time.  Life was so simple back then, even though I couldn't stand the new music at that time.

2005 was a fun year for me for sure.  The girl I went to prom with was the girl I ended up marrying.  I was on my high school baseball team and I had an awesome year.  It was the year I graduated high school.  In the summer I worked as a lifeguard and partied all the time.  I had a 2 week break from partying when I went on a charity service trip with my older sister, which was a very rewarding experience, it felt good to do some good instead of just partying all the time.  The bad thing about that year was that I started smoking in the spring of 2005, a bad habit that continues now.
