Subject: Did 9/11 change the music scene?

Written By: Martin on 09/18/12 at 5:00 am

Is it me or did 9/11 really made pop stars and people in general more sober? I mean in 2002-2003 Madonna went political and sounded underground. A lot of pop stars threw away the 90's flashiness and did more mature records and videos. Heck, even Britney sounded more mature. Songs like 'Baby One More Time' and 'Oops! I Did it Again' sounded very dated by late 2001.

Is it me or artists turned back to their pre-9/11 sound by 2005-6? I mean since then music sounds more superficial, almost like it did in 1998-early 2001, whether in late 2001-2003 it had a more mature, dark, even underground feel to it. In 2002-2003 most pop singers added urban or punk feel to their songs making them sound like legitimate artists and not like some bubblegum pop shiz. It sucks to think that the 9/11 event made music sound good again, but I feel like it did influence pop music. By late 2004, however, the cheesy 'plastic' music was coming back.

No because it was starting to go that way before 9/11.

But what made it go back to plastic after 2005?

I honestly think it did. Teen pop thing was still big in 2001. Nsync released their last album in July of that year and girls still loved them. But at the same time, you could tell the era was coming to an end. By the end of the year  noticed more r&b and hip hop was coming in full force.

No. I don't think 9/11 changed music at all.

I think 9/11 changed the way people saw things in a different way.

To an extent, yes. Although music started to change in May 2001.

I don't think so. Aside from Toby Keith's 'boot in your ass' song and American Idiot I can't think of any songs that relate to 9/11 or its aftermath.

Honestly, I don't think 9/11 gave us much of change as people think it did, aside from the fact that there was more paranoia.  I think 2008 brought out more changes since the economy went under and the cultural wars of the 80s and 90s came to an end.

Agreed.  Music recorded post-9/11 didn't start making an appearance until late 2002.  Everything we heard in late 2001 and early 2002 was in the works before 9/11.  Boy and girl bands matured because they themselves matured and their audience did was well.  Gen Y went from pre-teen in 1999-2000 to teenagers in 2001-2002.

I might be wrong, but imo that was the best moment in history, at least after the 80's. It was so fantastic, everything was better back then. I'd do anything to go to 2001-2003.

What was special about 2001-2003?

What was special about 2001-2003?

There was a unity and pride in this country reminiscent of the '80s.  There was also a lot more optimism about our future, and the economy was still good for the most part.  People thought America was still on the rise and was going places.  Today, it looks like our best years are behind us.  Yes there was a recession in 2001 but it paled in comparison to what we are going through now.
