Subject: Is 00's culture associated more with the Early 00's or Late 00's?

Written By: ExtremeMan8 on 09/22/12 at 12:50 pm

Do you think the overall vibe of the 2000's is more of the early 00's or late 00's? A lot of people associate 2000's culture with the late 00's I've noticed like with Autotune and Ringtone Rap. But I'm quite the opposite. I like to associate my decade with early 2000s stuff that I grew up with and enjoyed as a kid. It's not quite 90's but but it feels uniquely a part of the 00's to me. When I think of the 2000's I don't think of Facebook and YouTube, I think of MySpace and MSN. I think of Flip Phones, more laid back feel and Hip Hop. Is the 2000's more associated with the later part of the decade or the earlier part? A lot of people say the early 2000s are 90's so I'm not sure.  :-\\ I like to say 2002-2004 has a very strong 2000's feel to me.

02-06 IMO.

Early and late 00's are the eras that faded the 00's feel in and out respectively.

I haven't paid much attention to what was going on after 2002 or so, but I asked my brother born in 1988 and this is what he said:

2007 is more 'core 00s' culture-like than 2002 is. But overall the cultural peak was mid/late 2003 - mid 2006.

It's tricky, because although 2006 is more like 2012 than 2000, a lot of what is quintessential to the 2000s is from the early half and the ones that say the second half are more quintessential were either born before about 1983 and not paying enough attention or were born around 1998 and lack the memory to understand the whole thing.

The late 00s/early 10s culture is more likely to associate more with core 10s culture than core 00s culture

That sounds about right.  That time frame was basically the 'crunk era', which I think is about as 2000s as it gets.  But I also think we need a couple more years to have a full perspective, and to see how things change in the 10s.

Probably more the middle tbh. Early 2000's while different from the 90's was still kind of "90s-based", and the late 2000's especially 2008 and 2009 began some of the trends of the 2010's. I'd say the time MySpace was popular is really what I consider the "most" 2000's time. Roughly late 2003 to early 2008.

If you're talking 2000-2004 or 2005-2009 though I'd have to go with 2005-2009, early 00's was just too 90's.

Yeah that's what I meant. You may be right. Though I really wish more people remembered the 00's from 2000-2004, those years were the best.  :)

id say more  sept 2003 to November  2006 is the timeframe of the real 2000's to put a specfic time frame

I have to agree because that's what a lot say and I suppose 2000-2004 was it's own lustrum (ancient term meaning 5-year peirod) in many ways. It had the makings of 90s-ishness, but also the makings of an era after the 90s.

Since you are 'SO' much older than me, you should know better that even the first half of the 2000's was nowhere near the 90's.

The first half of the 00's wasn't original enough to be its own era, but at the same time lacked the vibe that made the 90's kinda cool. It was sorta f*cked either way.  ;D

It was a great time. Right in the middle between the 'old world' and the 'mobile web era'.

I was never too fond of the early 00's, its style was just a bit too plain for me. Plus I'm not a big fan of rap music so that kind of ruins it for me as well. I actually like 2005-2009 somewhat better, I'd take emo over rap if I had to choose.

Not that I really care so much, but isn't stuff like Survivor, The Sims and MySpace somewhat original? Even Facebook launched in 2004.

Facebook like it is today launched in (late) 2006. It was only for selected students before.

But I agree with you. The early 2000's had some great stuff. Including The Sims.

I was a substitute teacher in 2004 and I remember a lot of people getting excited about the release of The Sims 2 that year.

Never had that. I always preferred the first edition.

May Payne 1 was also great. One of the best early 2000's games.

I cannot disagree with you there. The early 00s had the golden age of many of the reality competitions still popular today like Survivor or American Idol. Also, Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 & 2 (a version was released in 99, but they redid it for a 2000 release with the expansion pack, so it's kind of still a 2000s origin game) have inspired not only their sequels but now you have Zoo Tycoon and a bunch of other Tycoons from this influential product.

Without doubt, the 2005-2009 half was still pretty cool, but it was the first half that defined the awesomeness of living through the era.

Early 2000's were golden. An amazing time. If there is any lack of culture that has occurred it would be after the early 2000's. The early 2000's had an amazing identity.

Maybe in the future people will see the 2000's as a technological transition decade and they may see the early 2000's as a vital part of the decade. People may just be saying today that the 00's are defined more with the later part but in the future, people may see the 00's as a transition from the old world to the new world with technology, and the early 2000's may make a better fit. I still stay solid in my opinion that 2005 was the core 00's year.

Actually, it would be 2004. The decade had 3653 days. 2000-2004 had 1827 days for goodness sake! While only 1826 days occured from 2005 - 2009.

Somewhat yes, I'm not saying nothing new at all came out in the early 2000's, I'm just saying it had a very plain aesthetic to it and was still more than 50% 90's like things.

Okay, that's fair enough. I kind of like the 'plain aesthetic' concept though. And the 90s were cool so I can't complain about the 90s-ness.

Actually I'd disagree. 1987 was the 1997 of the 80s. And 1994 was the 1984 of the 90s.
