Subject: Was 2009 the greatest music year of the '00s?

Written By: bchris02 on 10/21/12 at 12:20 am

It seems like the music of 2009 is more popular now than ever.  Top 40 stations are still playing it, and now "lite rock" stations that you usually hear in malls and restaurants are now "ra ra ah-ah-aaah"-ing  It seems like the music of 2009 was more memorable than any year since.

1. It was the budding year of Eletropop.  It was Lady Gaga's biggest year and probably best year
2. Post-Grunge was still on the radio
3. Hip-hop was still getting Top 40 hits
4. The trends established in pop music in 2009 laid the ground work for everything since
5. As of October 2012, Top 40 stations are still playing 2009 hits pretty heavily, but rarely play anything before late 2008.

Come on man, '09 is still relatively recent, I'd say it started the early 2010s pop culturally. Thank goodness post-grunge is finally fading(along with crunk rap).

It may be "popular" but I wouldn't call "I Gotta Feeling" by Black Eyed Peas and crap like that to be anywhere near "greatest". I would personally vote for 2005, or maybe 2004...but NOT 2009!

1. I dispute that. I would say 2010.
2. Post-Grunge wasn't new to the late 00s. Rewind to the late 90s and you will see what I'm talking about. Check out Foo Fighters or Days of the New.
3. Hip-hop had top 40 hits in the 90s and early 00s too. Ever heard of Biggie Smalls/ The Notorious B.I.G?
4. I think 2008 is at least partly on that.
5. Well it's still pretty recent. Is 2008 music from 13 years ago? Not even close.

2009 had a lot of timeless pop anthems, with "I Gotta Feeling" being one of them.  You still hear that all the time at sporting events, fundraisers, night clubs, etc.  Bad Romance was another one of the defining songs of 2009, and everybody knows the song, even people who don't listen to Top 40.  What other year in recent history has had as many such songs that were more than just hits, but pop anthems?

"I Gotta Feeling" is timeless? Maybe to people with bad tastes, but I see it as the annoying, overplayed piece of dirt that it is. So if you are asking for which year of recent mainstream trash people with bad tastes like the most, 2009 is a good candidate. But if you are asking for a year that offered gold instead of last week's dinner with flies buzzing over it, look for 2004 or 2005.

I also agree with 2004 or 2005 being the best music years, or 2008. 2009 did have some good music though.

Sadly I think 2000 was the best music year of the decade (sad because it was also the first). You could perhaps make a case for a few other years but 2009 isn't one of them. Generally speaking I feel like there was a downward trend over the course of the decade.

True. I wouldn't just say in music, but I'd say pop culture in general, shows went downward. People in society started acting increasingly stupid from about 2005/2006 onwards as well.

Oh yeah, 2000 was good as well. Didn't care for the teen pop though.

Nope, for me mid-late 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 had the best music from the whole 00's.

I didn't either. I was thinking more about Radiohead, U2, Eminem, Outkast, Modest Mouse, Coldplay, Daft Punk etc. who were all releasing big time albums that year.

No way. 2000 is the best year cause it's closest to 90s music.

I liked early to mid 2000's for music the best. 2007 was a pretty good year too. But 2008 and 2009 were the worst years in my opinion and they don't really have the true 00's feel to them.

Agreed. 2008 and 2009 are more like the 10s up to this point. They are not in the same ballpark as 2004 or 2005.

But was 2005 more like 2008 or 2009?  and was 2008 just a sub year of 2004?

2005 was more like 2008 than 2009, by virtue of being closer to each other with only 2006 and 2007 in between them. 2008, apart from being a 200x year, isn't in the same ballpark as 2004. In fact, it could only barely be considered in a ballpark with 2006.

true

2008 and 2009 do not belong with  2005 or 2006 or even 2007

Like I said the late 2000s is only 1 year and 6 months culturally

( aug 2008- dec 2009)

a  year cant define the decade LOL

I still think 2008 and 2009 had some 2005 and 2006 things, at least with hip-hop and R&B. Late 2005-early 2008 feel like one distinct period.

2001, 2002 & 2003 had the best music in the 00's imo.

no, despite the boy bands, and teen pop, the early 00s probably had the best music of the decade. Rap and top 40 music was still pretty decent. The 90s was still fresh, and carry overs were still coming...
