Subject: Mid-2000's Thread

Written By: Slim95 on 12/21/12 at 11:01 pm

There is already a thread of the early 2000's. The Mid-00`s are getting very nostalgic and there are many memorable moments from that era. What did you guys think of the Mid-2000's?

Not yet. I think around 2016/17 we can talk about it again. They still feel quite modern to me, unlike the early 00s.

If you were just in your single-digits back then you'd think differently about that. It's not that 20 years are nothing.
1990-95 feels quite nostalgic to me...and I feel some teenage nostalgia for 99-04 (esp. 2000 and 01). However 2005 and later is more or less like today (when it comes to 'old school' feelings).

It seems that age matters a lot, so on the other hand I can understand that Slim95 wants to talk about the mid 00s...

'nostalgia' is actually very subjective I think...

'retro' is something totally different.

For example I feel nostalgia for 1999-2004 but it's nowhere near being 'retro'.

I'm not nostalgic for the mid 00s but I do think they're different from today. The economic downfall and rise of social networking changed pop culture a lot and created a generation gap between the people who grew up in the 90s and early 00s (and for people born pre-85 or so, the late 80s as well) and the people who are still growing up. I'd say the boundary of these two generations is somewhere around 1993-94.

That's pretty much how I feel. I graduated from high school in 2005, so I'm actually starting to develop quite a bit of nostalgia for the late '04/early '05 time period, which covered the span of my senior year. My life has gotten alot more complicated over the last 8 years, so I think it's probably natural for me to be getting all nostalgic for the more carefree days of "yore". Having said that,  I definitely don't see that period as "retro" (or even "old" for that matter).

The Mid 2000's feel a long time ago to me because I was verry little then.  :P

That makes total sense to me because I was basically you ten years ago. It was around 2002/2003 that I first started to feel the slightest traces of nostalgia for the 90's. I think that today's rapid pop culture changes, combined with the ever increasing pressure of high school life, have made it very common for teenagers to start legitimately missing the culture and feel of their childhood years sooner than may have been the norm in the past.

Were you really born in 1988? Because I was born over a year after 1988 was over and none of the 00s or even late 90s have a 'misty haze' to me.  ;D

The only years I can remember that seem somewhat 'hazy' are the years from 1992 to 1996. Maybe '97 and early '98 a little bit.

Its weird tho  I feel like from the distance between late 2006 to 2008 seems  like a bigger gap than like 2010 to 2012
most of this has to do with the culture changing so much between late 06 and all of 07 and the 2cnd half of 2008.
Small case in point  I think a big reason it feels like ages is because of that gap between 06-08

Wow! Crazy to think Youtube is almost 10 years old. I keep forgetting that it debuted when I started high school considering that I didn't start using it religiously til '06/'07.

For the record, I don't consider the mid-2000s retro or classic yet. I do find some elements of it dated now (for example, the cellphones). I'm also not feeling fully nostalgic for the mid-2000s yet though I am starting to miss some of the 2003-2005 era (but mainly 2003) in terms of music I liked listening to back then. Not missing 2005-2006 yet in terms of pop culture though I do have some fave memories from my personal life back then. I don't think I'll truly find the mid-2000s nostalgic as a whole until the late 2010s/early 2020s.

It has been mentioned many times in this forum that 2006 was the year that everything changed, like music (more dancepop and less hip-hop), technology (blu-ray and the defunct HD-DVD), and fashion (more classy dressed up look and less boho-chic, more girls wearing pantyhose/tights with dresses/skirts). Now with Facebook, even though it came out in 2006 it didn't get popular until late 2007/2008. In 2005 and 2006 MySpace was a lot more popular.

So do you think 2005 goes more with 2000-2004 than 2006-2009? For me that year can be split in half, with the earlier half being more like 2003-2004 (more hip-hop/glam rap dominated), while the later half is more like 2006-2008 (less glam rap and more snap/ringtone rap, dance, electronica, and emo). Also as mentioned YouTube was released in 2005, and the Xbox 360, the first of that generation of consoles. Also in 2005 there was a decline in reality shows and a return to sitcoms, as well as shows like Lost (2004) that gained popularity.

I definitely think 2005 was a 'watershed' year, yes. Winter, spring and summer of 2005 still felt like the early 2000s and had a lot of similarities to the second half of the 90s. Fall of 2005 felt like the part of the 00s afterwards and has some similarities to the current decade.

Ranking the mid-2000s years as I see them today:

1. 2004
2. 2003
3. 2005
4. 2006

But all of those years were good.

I'll never understand why people think the '00s or even today were so similar to the '90s.

Technology wise, CD player vs. iPod is a pretty significant difference. Computing and internet use came a long way between the two decades as well.

Politically, pre-9/11 and Clinton vs. post-9/11 and Bush. Two different worlds.

Fashion in the '90s was distinct from the '00s too, I think. Overalls, flannel shirts, sweaters, certain hairstyles like the bowl cut and the Rachel cut in the '90s...more preppy looks in the '00s.

Musically, they may be more similar than any other two decades, but still a lot of clear differences as well.

2004 and 2005 are not in the same era as the '90s, at least to me.

I agree. They are very different from each other. Even 2002 and 2003 don't feel like the same era as the 90's. I think more older people like putting them together cause all they care about is the 80's.  :P

What makes it worse is that a lot of 13 year olds today would be out of their depth with technology like cassette tape walkmans which were quite common in the 90s.

The reason why the 90s get lumped together with the mid 00s  is because it had the same same kind of atmosphere as 1999

CD players were very common in the early 00s, more common than MP3 players. AIM and chatrooms were used most and there wasn't really social networking. TVs were not HD and most people did not have digital cable. VHS was normal in 2000-2003.

There are going to be obvious similarities between the late '90s and early '00s, as would be the case at the border of any two contingent decades. However, the '00s didn't end in '03. Comparing the mid or "core" '90s with the core '00s, they were were distinct from each other.

The reason why the 90s get lumped together with the mid 00s  is because it had the same same kind of atmosphere as 1999
There is a split there with January of 2003 and maybe March of 2003 though mainly because of 50 Cent's album "Get Rich Or Die Tryin" that blew the 00's glam rap era up.

It really was  & it went into a straight line of events  from late 2006 onward. There is ppl who say  2007 and 2008 felt the same

But it clearly did not feel like the previous years. I think that time period had the most pop culture changes of any decade  besides the 60s.
Wow you think the late 00's think had more changes in pop culture than the 60's? I never thought of that. I thought the 1988-1992 period had alot of changes with grunge, house music, and gangsta rap popping up.

I'd say more like 1990-1994, lol. Actually, each of the mentioned genres had their own separate time periods, as all genres do. Grunge was from 1991 (Nirvana's debut) until about 1995, house was from late 1989 (Technotronic) to about 1993/94, while gangsta rap was from 1988 (NWA) to about 1996 (2Pac and Biggie's deaths). There was also New Jack Swing which was from 1987-1996.

Relating to the topic of the thread, the genres of the mid-2000's had legs at separate periods too. Emo was 2004-2008, glam rap was from 2002-2005, snap/ringtone rap 2005-early 2008, and electro dancepop from late 2004 (Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. album) to 2008 (then evolved to Lady Gaga).

Agree on house music, grunge was like the very end of 1991 up to about 98ish, gangsta rap was from 88 to 06ish but really mostly from 1992 to 1997. Agree on new jack swing's span.

Emo was probably late 2005 to 2010. I'd say the emo fad lasted about five years, from "Sugar We're Goin' Down" in fall 2005 to "The Only Exception" in 2010.

Gwen Stefani's 2004 album wasn't really electrodance in my opinion at all, aside from the single "Cool" which wasn't very popular. I'd say it was more of the 'dirty pop' that typified the early 00s with a couple electro songs thrown in. It wasn't really cool to be electro until I Kissed A Girl and Just Dance came out.

Crunk/glam rap was about 02 to 05 yeah and then it evolved into snap and ringtone rap which lasted until 2008.

If you listened a modern rock station it was very much alive though then again, nu metal and pop punk were taking its place by 1998. I'm not really sure, what was rock music from 1995-97 like?

It was more alternative rock/post-grunge, like Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, Live, Matchbox Twenty, Alanis Morisette, Oasis, Everclear, Smashmouth, etc.

I just found out something interesting while researching post grunge, that the decline of grunge was one of the things that led to Kurt Cobain's depression, drugs, and suicide in 1994. Grunge sort of made a comeback that year (especially Soundgarden), but I remember it was on a decline in 1993. Late 1991 and 1992 were the big years for grunge, with Nirvana's Nevermind album and Pearl Jam's 10. There was also Temple of the Dog and Alice in Chains.

at that time (I listened to these music so I'm knowledgable on that) it was still more of a progressive punk, pop grunge and soft rock (leftover from late 80s), the hardcore maturation years for artists in the music industry I must say :D

OMG 2004-2007.... it was I guess still fresh off my memories :p I guess I was in my tween years xD but nothing pop culture wise attracts me much during those years, very bland... it was memorable because of my personal circumstances and I do have vivid memories of then (so doesn't considered to be that young anymore) but apart from that... I guess you wouldn't get nostalgic about it until probably 2015.... stuff in 2005 still look "similar" enough in 2012... I guess 2013 is when the actual 2010s culture is starting to take into full shape and effect :D

2008 was a great year in my personal life. It was the first of my 3 years of living in Japan (some of the best years of my life). As mentioned above, since I really enjoyed that year the music that came out that year brings back good memories, such as "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay, "Mercy" by Duffy, "Stop and Stare" by One Republic, "Shake It" by Metro Station, "American Boy" by Estelle, and many others. Also since I was living in Japan, I was able to avoid the panic and chaos from the economic crisis in the States. It was also an exciting year politically, with the election of Obama and the sense of hope (which later became disappointment in the years that followed).

I sometimes find it hard to believe the mid 00s was that long ago... between '04 and '06 was in my last year of middle school/first two years of high school...wow. Even though 90s hip hop was a little dated back then I was still listening to it. I like 2005 the most because it makes me think of the mid 90s. I hated 2003 very much, it sucked, 2007 was kind of boring, the summer was so-so. 2008 is pretty forgettable for me, I just like to pretend it doesn't exist.

It's understandable, you're pretty young and even back then you were, what? 10? I was already in high school then.

2007 was so boring

If 9/11 had never happened 2001 could've turned out to be a better year.

Personally, I can't complain about my life in 2001. It was way easier to be 15  8)
9/11 was a big deal in Germany, too, but it didn't affect my life that much.

Or you could watch a movie or TV show from that year. In fact, that's a good idea. I think I'll watch "40 Year Old Virgin" tonight. That one is a classic. "Wedding Crashers" is good too, but I don't own that one.

Also watch any final season 2006 episode of malcom in the middle  There are some scenes in the mall and in school. Even Malcolm has A emo hawk lol.  I dunno there is something about the fashion of 2005 and 2006 its very bland but in a it's ok to. Be bland for that era way.

I liked early YouTube. It was more cretive and it had more charecter. It got bland and boring when Google took over. It's still my favourite social networking site though and always will be until something else replaces it.  :P
