Subject: How is '00s pronounced?

Written By: Shemp97 on 01/10/15 at 10:25 pm

This can also be extended to the websites name as well. There never has been a consensus to the 2000s decade name.Abbreviating it to '00s makes it worse because the two-thousand is removed. 2000 can also refer to the century and the millennium as well meaning(especially when later decade come) that the first decade of the 21st century will be in need of an actual name referencing the 3rd to last digit like the 1980s or 1990s. The most popular names for the decade have been noughties and the aughties, but those haven't caught on in North America. How do you guys read '00s and what do you think the name should be?

Here is how I do it:

"Two-Thousands" - The years 2000 through 2009.
"Twenty-Hundreds" - The 21st century (2000-2099).
The Third Millennium - 2000 through 2999.

Any decade that comes after the 2000s I pronounce it "twenty-.....". So for the 2010s I call it "twenty-tens". For the years of the 2010s I do "twenty ten", "twenty fourteen", "twenty fifteen", and so on and so forth. It really clears up confusion, it sounds cooler, and is quicker and more efficient. As of now, I notice 50% of people saying "two thousand-..." and 50% of people saying "twenty-...". Hopefully the latter catches on.

Does anyone know how the years in the 1000s decade were pronounced? Maybe that would serve as a guide.

General consensus here seems to be 'The Noughties'. That's what people say whenever I asked them. Nobody seems to know what to call this decade though - twenty-tens maybe.

To the above - good question. Maybe the one-thousands or the ten-hundreds.

I call the double zeroes the two thousands and the tens the twenty somethings.

In North America, "aughts" is often heard, but I sometimes call it the "ohs" or "zeroes", often adding decade to clarify.  I'm surprised that in commonwealth countries they're not referring the decade as the "zeds" or "nils" as it sounds less negative than "noughties".

Definitely not 'ohs' for 'o' is a letter not a number!

I alternate between 'two-thousands', 'oh-ohs', and 'aughts.'  I don't like noughties for one reason or another.

This website is The ohs  or intheohs

Mostly the years are recent enough to recall specific years to mind when discussing them

two thousand and two my son was born

I started work in my current job in twenty twelve

I always pronounce the website as In The zero, zeros-but that is just me. As for the years, I will say two thousand and ____. (In this decades I will say "two thousand and ___ " or "twenty ____". ) For the decade? Sometimes I will use Rachel Maddow's phrase for it-the "two thousandzees."

I always pronounce it "oh-oh's" when I read "00s" and sometimes say it that way. But usually when spoken I say "two thousands."

I think the biggest issue with this is the fact that there is no English word of 00 in the tens place value. The way we say eighty for 80 or ninety for 90 can't be done the same way for "zero"(00) thanks to the strangely limited English language. Plus, the only 0's between 0 and 100 is 0, 10, 20, 30...and so on to 100. Someone should really fix this.

0 in English is zero, 00 in English will be double zero, and zero is nothing!

I wonder if since 1990's is abbreviated to "nineties" and 1980s as "eighties", the 2000s should be referred to as the "hundreds" or the "thousands". Think about it. 1900s was "nineteen-hundreds" drop the nineteen and you're just left with the "hundreds". Since another way to pronounce 2000s is "twenty-hundreds" or "20-00s", we should just abbreviate it to the hundreds. Double 00s according to the following website is a common slang to mean "hundreds" in general terms.

From 2000-2009, we pronounced it as "two thousand and #", from 2010 through maybe the rest of this century, we pronounce it as "twenty ##"

I may have posted this already but I alternate between "two thousands" and "aughts."  "Two-thousands" seems to be the most common.

Come on guys, think about it.

The Hundreds(2000s), the Tens(2010s), The Twenties(2020s), the Thirties(2030s), and so on.

"The Hundreds" may be viable in the 2100s decade, but in the 2000 nobody referred to the years as such as 2006 as "twenty-hundred and six" so I don't see it sticking.

I don't see the reasons for a debate over how the 00s are pronouced. Here in Australia, it's always been known as the noughties.

Similar logic can be applied here.
