Subject: Videogames of the 2000s

Written By: Sita0 on 04/03/15 at 2:21 pm

Here's how I'd sum up the videogames of the 2000s:

Consoles:

At the beginning of the decade? The PS2 ruled, trailed by the Xbox (for which Halo was the killer app) and then the Gamecube (which drew in Nintendo fans).

The middle-end of the decade? The Xbox 360 was extremely popular (Halo and Call of Duty the most popular games there), the PS3 was EXPENSIVE, and the Wii ruled them all. Games such as Wii Sports and Wii Fit gained a lot of popularity quickly, although not really among the old "hardcore gamer" demographic.

Portables:

Nintendo ruled the decade with the Game Boy Advance (which was the only real portable of its generation), and later the Nintendo DS (which, in addition to inheriting the GBA's successes and game library and expanding on it itself, added the Wii-style games for a new demographic, such as Brain Age). The only other real competition was the PSP, which was somewhat popular but never gained as much traction. As for phones, highly popular now, but virtually nonexistent pre-smartphones. I recall fumbling to play Ms. Pacman on a flip phone, but it was just a gimmick.

Most people don't think about the PC, but PC gaming was huge during the first half of the 2000s.  It wasn't until the Xbox 360 and PS3 brought better graphics and online gameplay to consoles that PC gaming started to fade and that happened in 2005.  2000-04 were HUGE for the PC.

and this is why I decided to trade my PS2 for a 3 and I never looked back.  :)

I have my PS1 and PS2. I remember when we first got our PS2 - my cousin gave it to me. I was very excited.

I liked the PS2 but after a while I got tired of it.

I remember about 2000 or 2001 my parents and I spent the night at a hotel and the staff brought up a PS1 with Lara Cody tomb raider.

I still use my first 360 controller that I got in 2006, works fine and all

I never played as many video games in the '00s compared to the '90s except for some of the PC games, such as Monopoly Tycoon, Sim City 4, the latest version of Civilization, and Diner Dash-style games. I played a small amount of Gamecube games early on, mostly Animal Crossing, some Dancing Game, and a little bit of Super Smash Bros. Melee, but I've never played a Halo, Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, or any PS2/XBOX/Wii game outside of maybe a few minutes on a couple occassions (likely Guitar Hero), which as a result skews me to being a retro gamer with these 21st century games still the frontier. I hated how it felt too "real" and not imaginative with the new graphics, the games becoming too time-consuming (as you get older, time becomes more precious as they say), and that time-consuming habit came from Pokemon burnout (which IMO destroyed my love of certain games since it just won't end). But I support everyone who likes 2000s and beyond video games, provided they provide a good message and logical skills.

I sold my PS2 to someone I know who's brother took hers. I have yet to sell the games. It's a good idea to de-clutter when you know something is just sitting and won't be used again. I do regret never playing Tomb Raider, but I can find other games in the series for my Xbox360 so I might test those out.

I only played PC games; consoles not allowed. I loved the Age of Empires series, Sim City 4; Civ iii; other games like that; where I could play god and build and destroy worlds.

The old Tomb Raider games are way better than the newer ones.

I gave back my PS2 to Gamestop a few years ago and exchanged it for a PS3.

I remember spending plenty of days (and nights) playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. To be honest, I was quite disapointed with Skyrim.

I liked Skyrim better than Oblivion personally.  I felt Skyrim did right what Oblivion tried to do but missed the mark on.  The technology really wasn't there in 2006 but it was in 2011.

If I had to pick five games that sum up the '00s in video games, I would say the following.

1. World of Warcraft
2. Half Life 2
3. Bioshock
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
5. Doom 3

Strangely, I think that was why I was a bit disappointed with Skyrim. I was expecting more but there was just too much snow for my liking. It felt like Oblivion but polished up. Admittedly, the dragons were cool.

1 World of Warcraft

A friend of mine got me a trial for Warcraft. I played a bit but was never interested in a game I couldn't finish.

3. Bioshock

Yes, good game. The freakiest part for me was the manic piano player Sander Cohen.

5. Doom 3

Definitely enjoyed this for the PC. Very difficult though.

Sim City 4 from 2003 has not been bettered since. I still play it on my computer now.

Not bad, Howard. I probably prefer 2009's version when they introduced a better tag system.
