Subject: How old do the 00s feel to you?

Written By: Catherine91UK on 06/21/15 at 5:01 am

Following a similar thread in the 90s section, I'd say:

2008-2009: slightly dated
2003-2007: dated but not exactly old
2000-2002: slightly old

2000: very old (just like 1999)
2001-02: kind of old
2003-05: very dated
2006-07: dated
2008-09: slightly dated, but not too far off from today

2000-2003: Old school
2004- Q3 2008: dated
Q4 2008-2009: fairly dated and in some ways recent

Old school. Many people don't realize and refuse to accept it. 2000-2003
Very dated. No doubt. 2004-2006
2007, dated. 2008, dated in a sense. 2009, not really.

2000-2002 - kind of old.
2003-2005 - very dated.
2006-2008 - dated.
2009 - not really dated yet, but getting there.

Will be interesting to see where things stand in 2020. 2000 will be positively retro by that time and 2010 will be very dated.

2000-2001:  Very dated, teen pop and 5th-gen video game consoles were still popular.
2002-2005:  Dated, the Internet is more prominent and fashion isn't very outlandish, but the general feel of the period is pretty obsolete.
2006-2008:  Dated, but not terribly distant, thanks to the rise of social media.
2009:  Almost like yesterday, since it's easily part of the same cultural decade we're in now, with Obama being president, EDM being the dominant form of music, and social issues taking the spotlight in world news.

None of the years from the 00s feel particularly old or retro to me (that's more the very early 90s and before), but it definitely seems like a very different era than what we're in now.

As of today, Youtube considers 2009-videos to be five years old if they were uploaded after June 22nd, 2009. Older videos from 2009 are considered to be six years old.

2008-2009: Almost not recent, but still has some 00s elements.

2000-2004: Definitely old, but they still feel like yesterday.

As a whole: Dated, but not yet retro

2000-2001: Somewhat old and destined to be retro in a few years mostly due to being seen as an extension of the late '90s (especially outside of the last few months of 2001). This applies more for things introduced in the late '90s such as Pokemon, Teen Pop, Grand Theft Auto, early Britney/Christina Aguilera, Destiny's Child, Sex And The City, etc that were still popular then. Stuff introduced in 2000-01 such as Survivor, Halo, sixth generation video game consoles, the Harry Potter movie franchise aren't really quite there yet however since many of these are still relevant in today's pop world.

2002-2003: Dated, but not yet retro cool. I remember posts around 2008 describing how the culture feels like an "endless 2002", even though it was before certain trends like ringrone rap/emo/scene were in the forefront. However, listening to 50 Cents' first album is a surefire way to be a punching bag at a club these days. The 24-7 "Breaking News" culture seemed to set in for good though around this time, and with broadband internet spreading out here, it is the first period that feels contemporary to me as opposed to being vintage or "very dated".

2004-2005: Pretty much the core of what would be in its "uncool" phase, along with 2006-07 being "noticeably dated" yet still modern in a sense. The peak of the proliferation of flip cell phones, Myspace, Friendster, early blogging, TV a weird mix of SD and HD, Emo,  Unfortunately, in a way, surrealism/badassness/debauchery that proliferated around here still exists in many ways today. Quite dated in a technological sense, but in a social sense, fairly similar with a few noticeable differences (going green/renewed domestic violence concerns for example). But the "loudness war", post-hardcore, overexposure of rap music, and late post-grunge don't really make me miss this era; I was out of high school and focused more on the real world.

2006-2008: Still feels almost like yesterday despite noticeable changes in many things. By this point, if you look at common media such as newspapers, magazines, and TV ads, you'll find that the production and graphic styles start to closely resemble today's ads in many ways, and clearly has that "future has arrived" look relative to the changes I've grown accustomed to. Social media really exploded here (Twitter was launched and Youtube/Facebook were the new darlings of the media world), cellphone technology seemingly changed weekly, and of course the first real smartphones were introduced. Suddenly, it wasn't cool to buy CDs, VHS was officially dead, and the earlier half of the Millenials really started to take control of producing the culture rather than consuming it like they did in school/college. It was just a very cynical time to live though that I've like to pretend these years never existed.

2009: Like others have said, not old and outside some always-superficial trends (such as Justin Beiber), basically connected to mid-10s.

2000 and 2001: Very old school and almost retro cool.

2002 and 2003: Old school. Past their peak of uncoolness. It's only upwards from here on out. Songs from this era are now old enough to sample them in current music.

2004 and 2005: The valley of lameness. Completely irrelevant in every shape and form.

2006 and 2007: Some slight similarities with today (namely skinny jeans and electronic music), but very distant indeed.

2008 and 2009: Outdated. No longer the same era, it's been too long, but there are many similarities with today's music.

Everything before 2010 seems dated, that's when I turned 18.

Same with me. Alot changed in those ten years. Not all for the best, and some for better.

I'd say 2007-2009 are recent enough. Especially 2009.

2004-2006 is still memorable, but different from now.

2000-2003 is a distant memory.

YouTube is 10 years old.

I meant Youtube seems to think 2009 is 5 years ago. Because every 2009 video is labeled 5 years ago instead of 6.

^^ same for 2010 i.e 4 years ago instead of 5. They are slow to change these things.

I have explained this above. Most videos from 2009 do not show "6 years ago" because they were uploaded at a date which is not yet six years ago (e. g. August 2009). Videos from before June 2009 show indeed "6 years ago". Just look for videos from July 2008-May 2009 and you'll see "6 years ago".

Oh? I didn't notice that. I'm certain I saw some uploaded in March 2013, for instance that still say '1 year' rather than '2 years'.

Maybe it only showed March 2013 in the title, but the upload was later. I have checked quite a few videos and my theory seems to be true ;)

July 2008-May 2009 is 6-7 years ago, not 7-8. That's very simple maths. ;)

2000-2002 They are old as the late 90s was in the early 2010s. Most people think of 2000-2002 as the very late 90s due to its culture resemblances. In other words, they're very dated.

2003-2006 Fairly dated, along with having these years introduce most of the trends in the 2000s.

2007-2009 Decently dated. There's no comments that I can say about them, but at least they're older than the early 2010s.

2012-Today: Current era
2007-2011: Slightly dated
2002-2006: Dated, but nowhere near retro
1998-2001: Not retro, but will be within the next few years

Currently, 1997 and earlier is retro to me, the nostalgia trends are currently in the early-to-mid 90s.
