Subject: What was your favorite year for Cartoon Network?

Written By: mqg96 on 10/16/15 at 4:46 pm

Cartoon Network, a channel that was launched in 1992 originally for old school Hanna-Barbera cartoon reruns, then in 1995 came up with the World Premiere Toons, or the What A Cartoon Show which gave birth to the 8 original Cartoon Cartoons, and from that point on Cartoon Network started coming up with its own original programming like they still do today with the new generation of shows. Then a few years later Toonami came out with anime and action shows for kids to watch on weekdays, and then Kids WB shows started joining the lineup for reruns, which brought a lot of variety into the channel. Cartoon Network has been through a roller-coaster over the years, certain shows have come and go, including blocks, and the new ones have came along for new generations to come. However, everybody has their own opinions about their favorite ages of Cartoon Network. But I'm going to challenge all of you, it's a tough one, but what do you believe was the absolute peak year of Cartoon Network, or your favorite year of the channel its whole history that gave you the most nostalgia or memories. Give your reasons why. I'm going to start with 1995 and go all the way to 2009, it's a long span but I'll do it. I'm not nominating 1992-1994 because the channel was still pretty young with just mainly old school reruns only, but if there's a year that's not in this poll, then go ahead and include your opinion on here. I'm obviously not nominating 2010-2015, since it's recent, but again if any of your favorite years are in that span, go right ahead and tell me! ;D

Damn. This is hard. At the end of the day, I would say 2003. I believe 2003 was the finale peak for Cartoon Network. By that time,  Cartoon Network couldn't get anymore diverse. Cartoon Network, including Toonami at that time was airing examples such as the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z which is the saga I enjoyed most of all from DBZ. Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragon Ball, Kension, New He-Man, golden age Pokémon, Tiny Toon Adventures, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy premiered at its peak, and Teen Titans. Adult Swim followed with golden age Family Guy premier, Lupin The Third and just as much golden age bumpers and it wasn't weird.

Cartoon Network 2003 definitely has my vote.

2002, because that was the last full year of the Cartoon Cartoons era, the last year new episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog were being aired, the year The Powerpuff Girls Movie came to theaters, and the series premiere of Codename: Kids Next Door.  December 6, 2002 was a pretty exciting day in my life.  2003 did have good variety, and was the first full year KND was on the air, but it was also when TRL infected Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, as well as the period a lot of classic Cartoon Cartoons either got cancelled or just declined badly in quality (PPG suffered the same fate as Spongebob after its feature film, losing the classic team of writers and then turning into a borderline Nick Jr. show with terrible humor and hardly any action whatsoever).

Okay, I'm going to cheat a little bit. I went with 1999 on the poll, but really my vote for the absolute peak of Cartoon Network, if possible, would go to the combined 1999-2000 time period. Think of everything you had during that 24 month span:

-- Cartoon Cartoon Fridays makes it's debut.
-- Dragon Ball Z peaks with the Namek and Android sagas.
-- "Ed, Edd & Eddy", "Courage the Cowardly Dog", and the underrated "Sheep in the Big City" all premiere.
-- TOM 1.0 debuts as Toonami host, then is replaced by TOM 2.0 following the much hyped "Intruder" mini-series.
-- Toonami reaches it's absolute zenith, expanding to late night with "The Midnight Run" and Saturday mornings with "The Rising Sun".
-- The greatest special in Cartoon Network history airs with "The Big Game XXVIII: Road Runner vs. Coyote".
-- "Gundam Wing" and "Tenchi Muyo" are added to Toonami, completing the block's most iconic lineup.
-- The "Big Four" Cartoon Cartoons ("Dexter's Laboratory", "Johnny Bravo", "Cow & Chicken" and "Powerpuff Girls") were all still in top form and producing new episodes.

I just don't see how that can be topped. 8)

Wow, I'm surprised a lot of people have voted for 2002 so far! From January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2002, is there really something about that span that was very special, magical, or golden for Cartoon Network!? ??? :D

Yeah, sounds about right, half of that was 1999 but a lot of the other half is 2000. I'm not the biggest expert on the Toonami stuff throughout the span. However, here's what I do know. CCF premiered in 1999. Ed, Edd n Eddy and Courage the Cowardly Dog premiered in 1999 along with Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Cow & Chicken, and Powerpuff Girls already premiering new episodes regularly. As for the Road Runner vs. Coyote special, that might have been 2000. Of course TOM 1.0 was 1999, and TOM 2.0 debuted in 2000. That's all I can get for now.

I should've been more specific with the dates. You are correct that CCF, "Ed, Edd n Eddy", and "Courage the Cowardly Dog" all debuted in 1999, while "Sheep in the Big City" premiered in late 2000. As for the rest, "Gundam Wing" and "Tenchi Muyo" both began airing on Toonami in mid 2000, the Namek and Android sagas of DBZ aired in Fall 1999 and Fall 2000 respectively, and the Road Runner/Coyote Big Game special aired in January 2000 just before the Super Bowl.

The poll is flawed because the topic asks for a favorite year, while the poll itself asks for the peak, and those are two different things. First, my favorite Cartoon Network year is 1995 because that's when I discovered the channel and enjoyed its mix of classics and the earliest originals and I was still young enough to really appreciate the cartoons even if Nickelodeon was still my go-to channel. The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Dino, Yuckie Duck, and others part of the World Premiere Toons banner knew that the network didn't need to be what classic Boomerang was, and don't forget What a Cartoon! It clearly was the start of the channel's Golden Age (which I combine with the whole of the Powerhouse Era).

I voted 2001 as the peak since that falls right in the middle of the PH era with Toonami being popular. Also, in June 2001, Cartoon Network aired a 49-hour marathon of 176 Bugs Bunny cartoons from his first appearance in "Porky's Hare Hunt" to "From Hare To Eternity" in 1997, showing that occassional classics still mattered. That year, the channel hit first place in primetime ratings among all basic cable networks. Also, a major changing of the guard occured where Betty Cohen resigned as president of the channel with Bradley Siegel, who was also president of several Turner networks, provide the early-mid '00s classics. However I wasn't much into cartoons in general during the '00s so its hard for me to take a good look, though those links are a good way to start.

My favorite years for Cartoon Network were 2005-2008 since they had lots of good sheesh back then. 2009 was okay but it wasn't as good as those years I mentioned.

I started watching it when we first got cable, in late 2000/early 2001. At that time it was still showing older classic cartoons (Looney Tunes; Tom & Jerry) on a regular basis. But then lots of its original shows starting taking over and I lost interest. I think for a while in 2001 it was also showing the Animaniacs reruns.

Looking through these posts, I've seen the majority of the people pick 2001 or 2002 as their favorite years for Cartoon Network. In review, let's take a look back at what went on during these years.

2001
Bugs & Daffy Super Bowl Special, which was the last one of the four that occurred
June Bugs marathon happens again
Time Squad, Samurai Jack, Justice League, and Grim & Evil premieres
Dexter's Lab makes its comeback with a 3rd season
Superchunk gets cancelled
Cartoon Cartoon Weekend Big Pick occurs, where Codename: KND wins, which premieres the following year
Johnny Bravo, Ed Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Sheep in the Big City, and The Powerpuff Girls continue to make new episodes
Batman Beyond, Mobile Suit Gundam, Cardcaptors, Dragon Ball (original), and Zoids premiere on Toonami. (not the biggest Toonami expert BTW)
First full year with TOM 2
As someone already stated, this was the last year Animaniacs & Tiny Toon Adventures played reruns, before it was moved to Nickelodeon during the fall of that year
Adult Swim premieres in the fall, which starts out from 11pm-2am on Saturdays and 10pm-2am on Sundays & Thursdays
Primetime premieres, a weeknight (Mon-Thur) block with jazz music background and cartoon characters in bubbles, which featured a mixture of random Cartoon Cartoons and classics on the lineup each night
Classic/old school cartoon reruns from Hanna-Barbera, MGM, or WB continue to be shown during early morning hours, midnight hours, or on weekend blocks like Boomerang or Boomeraction.

2002
Cartoon Network's 1st 13th Annual Fancy Anvil Awards Show occurs
Cartoon Cartoon Weekend Summerfest occurs
What Ever Happened to Robot Jones and Codename: KND premiere
The Powerpuff Girls Movie premieres
Sheep in the Big City ends
Courage the Cowardly Dog's final season airs throughout most of this year
Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab, The Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd n Eddy, Samurai Jack, Time Squad, etc. continue to premiere new episodes
The last June Bugs marathon occurs
Throughout that summer, Primetime shuffles up with different lineups each week
Cartoon Cartoon Fridays gets extended to go on throughout the entire midnight
He-Man, G Gundam, and Transformers: Armada premiere on Toonami
Scooby Universe block premieres, which shows random episodes of different Scooby-Doo series for 3 hours each Saturday
Classic/old school cartoon reruns from Hanna-Barbera, MGM, or WB continue to be shown during early morning hours, midnight hours, or on weekend blocks like Boomerang or Boomeraction.
