Subject: Underrated and Underappreciated years of THE 2000's

Written By: the2001 on 11/14/15 at 10:09 pm

As the title says, what years do you feel do not get enough respect and deserve them?
Ill give you mine and feel free to chime in.

2008 Like I have stated before 2008 is an amazing year that gets overshadowed by the economic collapse in the fall that year.
Pop culture was fun this year a return to fun (after the non canon 2007 year) Xbox 360 becomes a standard for many households, Obama
becomes elected president. We had alot of changes that year but someone of them were fun. Music got even dancier and dancier. 2008 is not my
favorite year of the 2000s at all, but it deserves more respect.

2002
Often overrshadowed by 2001 and sandbagged by 2003, 2002 had its own vibe and was running off minor fumes of the late 1990s, it was like a finale to the 90s.
2002 things were changing tho pop was becoming more urban. By this time the Nokia snake phone becomes big and alot of people start adopting, Windows XP
becomes standard in all pcs. Vice city debuts and shatters records. The Osbornes was the 1# show on MTV.

I did not like 2008, for some reason, even though it was a very transitional year with a lot of changes that happened, I guess a lot of it had to do with my personal life and it being the worst summer of my K-12 years. However, I LOVED 2002 to the max when it was going on, yes I was only 6 back then, long time ago, but I can still remember it clearly, 2002 was the first full year of my core childhood. It was great. That Spring Break 2002 back in Kindergarten when I was sick for 2 weeks, I stayed in the Hampton Inn hotel, then afterwards my first beach trip my whole life and I played Putt-Putt golf! I have a picture of my first lego ship I ever built at the time. I collected a lot of planet hot wheel cars. The movies were great! I played flag football during the fall semester in 1st grade and I went to some of my first football and basketball games in my life. That gaming experience when I was that young! It was still the millennial late 90's/early 2000's era, great variety of epic cartoons on TV, 6th generation gaming was in full force, etc.

I started 1st grade in 2002, but that Summer 2002 after I finished Kindergarten was one of the best times of my life! My gosh it was crazy! 2002 was like the quintessential year of the early 2000's if you ask me!

2002 is the last great year of pop culture if you ask me. 2003 was still pretty good but it's when we started moving towards the mid-00's. 2002, on the other hand, was the last core year of the Y2K era and it still had the fun extreme vibe the rest of the era had. A bunch of cool stuff happened that year including me turning 20. I remember going to see Scooby Doo with my cousins and I embarrassed myself because I laughed so hard in the theater when I saw that Matthew Lillard was playing Shaggy but nothing was more embarrassing than the dialogue in Star Wars Episode II! Then Spider-Man came out and I just loved that movie! It's still one of my favorites to this day. I know a lot of people put Spider-Man 2 up as their favorite and it is a great movie but the first Spider-Man is just so much fun to watch. When I look back to that year, it feels so much more simpler and even a little bit homely at times. I got a lot of fond memories of hanging out with my friends, the music I listened to, the TV I watched and all the things I did during the year. Speaking of Windows XP, I remember a lot of Computer stores still had Windows 98 and ME computers on their shelf's this year (and would be there until sometime in 2003. 2004 for ME, I think). I still had Windows 98 until late 2004 when my parents got XP. Both the late 90s and the early 00's as a whole kicked ass and 2002 really was a great year for me.

Its not about what's underappreciated. As long as you enjoyed the year, that's the success. Just keep embracing your appreciation. That's what I do. My social life in 2008 was on point. I didn't like 2008's atmosphere though. It felt strange.

The early and mid 2000s seems moderately appreciated. For the late 2000s, I can just wait for people to appreciate it in a few years.

2007. But I've been out of it for the past 8 years so I don't know what you've all been saying about 2007. But for me, 2007 was an alright year! Ringtone rap was still popular, so that was a bit much, but overall I really liked the energy of the year. Like someone on here said, social media was huge this year.

2001- Okay, I'm biased. I just like it because it was the peak of Britney Spears's career. When I first saw, and heard, Avril Lavigne in June of 2002, I knew that Britney was passed her peak.

Um, I don't think that can be explained. Something about it just felt off. It wasn't to where my superior social life couldn't distracted me from it at the time. That's how I still enjoyed that year.

I feel 2000 kinda gets forgotten quite a bit. Most people remember it for the Bush/Gore election and aftermath of the recount. This was also the year where Napster introduced peer 2 peer file sharing. Gladiator, X Men, Perfect Storm came out in movie theatres. PS2 launched this year. WWF easily had one of its best years ever with The Rock, Kurt Angle, Triple H, Stone Cold coming back from being hurt. The Simpsons was still watchable and South Park was still kinda new.

Personally, I graduated 8th Grade. Went on a fun family vacation to Memphis, Ohio/Pennsylvania to visit family. Started high school

I agree that 2001 is underappreciated.  Most people remember it only for 9/11.  I definitely see that year as the peak of early '00s hip-hop.  It was also the year that the boy bands transitioned to more of an R&B sound.  N'Sync's "Pop" album was very different in its sound compared to their previous albums.

It was the year album sales started to go down in the US.
Teen pop was past its peak.
George W. Bush came into presidency.
I noticed cell phones starting to become common with people.

2005 doesn't seem to get much attention. YouTube launched that year, Live 8 happened, and the world seemed to be getting over 9/11.

I feel like 2006 is VERY underrated. People like to talk about 2005 because of the breakthrough of MySpace and YouTube, along with 2007 with the iPhone and the peak of the housing bubble. 2006 seems to be sandwiched in the middle

What are the positives pop culturally about 2006 to you, besides 6th generation gaming still going on strong for one more year?

Well you still had a lot of good 2000's sitcoms on the air like Malcom inThe Middle, King of Queens, That 70's Show, Everybody Hates Chris, The Office, etc.

Also as much as I hated Crunk rap & Emo music, there was still a better variety of music back then rather than today

Plus like you said 6th generation gaming was still going strong

This was also when social media (for better or for worst) was now very common, I would argue at the same level as today if not slightly under

Also like many others on this forum have said, this was the calm before the storm in the world of economics. This was also the peak of the housing bubble if I remember and a lot of homes and shopping centers were being built

I think 2006 is under appreciated because the music left a lot to be desired that year until the very end.  Most of the year was filled with unmemorable hits such as "Jibbs - Chain Hang Low", "Nelly - Grillz", "Young Joc - It's Goin Down", "Rihanna - SOS", and "Cassie - Me & U."  None of those songs have stood the test of time.  It was definitely the worst year of the decade for music and I don't really see any contest on that.

2006 was my least favorite year for movies of the 2000's decade as well. The year did offer some good ones like Cars or Night of the Museum, but compared to the other 2000's years very little. 2005 and 2007 were much better years for movies.

I've mentioned this before, but 2006 was a great year for horror.  Plus, Borat came out that year, which I would include in the top 5 movies of the decade.

I was agreeing with you until the last photo lol  ;D

Personally I felt the Final Fantasy series has been going downhill since Sqauresoft merged with Enix, becoming SqaureEnix. Final Fantasy X, was the last good FF IMO, but your entitled to your own. Hopefully the series picks up with XV.

2006 did however have Kingdom Hearts II, even though the first one is my personal favorite in the series, II was very good and definitely on my top 3 of Kingdom Hearts games! My 2nd favorite game in the series was probably Chain of Memories, which I've played on my GBA and PS2

I vividly remember all of the commercials for these games

I think the late 2000s as a whole are underrated.  Many times they get ignored or lumped in with the '10s.  2006-2009 were just as much a part of the '00s canon as 2000-2005.  The second half of the decade brought just as much to the table and had its own, unique culture.  A lot of the defining things that made the '00s what they were happened in the latter part of the decade.  Right now, most of the nostalgia is centered on the first half of the decade but I think as time goes on people will look back on the late '00s with much more fondness and view them as separate from the '10s.

I agree with an earlier poster on here. 2006 is criminally underrated. I confuse “Hannah Montana” for having a 2007 premiere date. Nothing really registers with me when someone says 2006. That could be because I wasn’t paying much attention to all of the new things happening in 2006. I’m sure I was watching “Lost” and hearing about Paris Hilton tabloid news in ‘06. Other than that… :-\\

2002/2003 were some of the best years of my life. Born in 1997 here. 2002 was so amazing i remember all of the movies back then were so futuristic. I still remember going to see spider-man and my dad took me to go see blade 2 in 2002. Movie theaters were so packed back then and kid culture from the late 90’s was still popular such as furbies and hit clips. I went to my first basketball game in 2001 (warriors) with my dad but 2002-2003 was amazing. I started elementary in 2002 and met my bff who I’m still friends with till this day. I went to Hawaii and got on a plane for the first time ever in July of 2002. Then I went to El Salvador to visit my grandma in 2003. Where I’m from we have this themed park called Great America and back then it was collaborating with paramount so everything was Nickelodeon themed. Ahhh I miss it so much. I learned how to ride a bike in 2002 and have it on vhs still ! I feel like 2002 was the start of my core childhood. I was watching more of The Amanda show, ed ed and eddy, rocket powers, etc rather than PBS kids. I had gotten my gameboy advance for my 5th birthday and a ps2. I hated 2008/2009, there was a depressing feeing during that time that I can’t put my finger on. That magical childhood feeling was over by then for me. I consider 2007-2009 the ending of my childhood and start of my adolescence. It was a different atmosphere compared to the early 2000’s

Nothing about 2008 is under-appreciated. It’s one of the years of the 2000s guaranteed to be in every social studies textbook in schools today.
