Subject: What are you listening to -- Mid and Late 2000s Rock/Metal/Pop-Rock/Emo edition

Written By: 2001 on 01/04/16 at 9:24 pm

Trigger warning for JordanK1982  :D

Early 2000s rock seems to get a love here, deservedly, but mid-2000s rock still get a lot of hate, mainly hate for Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, and the whole peak emo thing. But I couldn't have survived middle and high school without these bands! I can't be the only one who likes it. So let's hear 'em!

General thread rules:
1) Please only list one or two songs at a time, so people can take each post bite-sized. Listing 20 songs at the same time would kill the thread very quickly, ain't nobody got time for that.
2) Link YouTube links externally instead of embedding them; so people can continue browsing inthe00s and not have the music stop.
3) Try to include album art! Visual information > written information.
4) Try not to be a hater, although I know sometimes you can't help it lol.

Dude, they're just songs. People can just get nostalgic over any era and they don't claim as a fact. Same with how I don't like most of this decade's music. I respect people's opinions on it and not go nostalgically biased.

I'd expect better of the youth of today. If you showed that song to me, I'd scoff and say "The only Fall Out Boy I'll ever listen to is the Project Rocket Split and Evening Out With Your Girlfriend"!

Faux-Emo safe space? Gross. 8-P

Ok, ok, there is one song out of the entire post-2003 world that I like (haha, I'm such a goof).

http://a2.mzstatic.com/us/r30/Music/v4/9c/d3/4f/9cd34f21-236b-5cda-2396-14f8d80730c1/cover170x170.jpeg

The Shore - Mashlin (2005) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNgJlkYZ8jA

FUN FACT: The singer was in an early 00's Pop Punk band called Agent Felix. They lasted from 1998 to 2003 (the entire Y2K era/late 90's/early 00's :P). They only have a few releases, one rad full length from 2000 called "Cooler Than You" and another from 2002 called "When Pigs Fly". Perfectly captures the vibe of those times.

Wait... There's more..... :o

Failure's Not Flattering - New Found Glory (2004) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIDgXShFOyM

This album isn't as good as their 2000 self-titled and the 2002 Sticks and Stones but it's still got a lot of really good songs.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/id/thumb/1/12/StillNotGettingAny.jpg/220px-StillNotGettingAny.jpg

Shut Up - Simple Plan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lpds3V90VbM (2004)

This album is less-than-half good. It's not at all as good as the mighty No Pads... and a lot of the songs really suck but Shut Up is a good song.

What part of safe space don't you get? You're scaring people away!  >:(

The Mashlin song is good stuff! And I could have sworn Shut Up came out in 2002  :o NFG is awesome as always  8) (even their 2015 stuff  ;D)

What do you think about this song?

Scaring people off to the early 00's!

Yeah, a Mashlin's pretty cool band! Shut Up seems like a 2000-2002 song but it's 2004 (surprisingly!) and NFG died in 2004! >:(

I didn't know you liked Unwritten Law! They're one of my favorite bands! That song could be worse but that album as a whole is definitely one of their weakest.

This album is definitely their weakest especially considering it was released after 2001's mighty Symptoms of a Leveling Spirit and 2003's mighty Bound by Ties of Blood and Affection (albums you should probably listen to first) but I like this song. It's the best off the whole album.

Sleep So Sound - The Artist Life (2008) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYu0ZNxGBs8

This is one of the best EP's to have come out in recent years. It sounds more like a song from 1999 than 2008 which is why I like it. Oh, Canada!

Burlington?! That's the enemy city! All the snobs live there! >:( I can't enjoy this.

This sounds very early 2000s despite coming out 2011. It's not late 2000s but I had no idea where else to put it lol.

Eulogy - The Flatliners (2007) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0swGZXbW7I

This song's not too bad. These guys are another bunch of beaver beer drinkers from Canada so maybe you will like them (they come from Richmond Hill. I don't know if you have something against them, too).

There's a Problem - The Flatliners (2005) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42wo84sdNlQ

I forgot this album existed. Super rad, though. I thought it came out in 2001 or 2002 (which would make sense) but it actually came out in 2005. What's something like this doing in 2005!? This has no business being released during that time!! It's far too fast!!!

Yeah, they're a really good band. Thing is I don't know how I ended up with their or the Artist Life's CD. Big mystery to me. Like, I got this box and it's full of old CD's; I know what year they are because of the copyright on the back and I saw stuff like 2005, 2007, 2008 etc. Needless to say I was shocked I had CD's from that recent. I think my uncle might of given them to me (he's not too big into this stuff but he watches a lot of Much Music and buys the CD when he sees something he likes). But yeah, the second one is the raddest!

I'm gonna post another one from your favorite city:

Beach Towns And Foolish Clowns - The Artist Life (2008) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg6qUbkAl7w

This is definitely one of the best songs on the EP. This sounds like it came out in 1998, what's it doing in 2008!? This song is probably the best song of 2008/2009 next to Sleep So Sound.

Here's another one that's really good:

Waiting Room - The Artist Life (2007) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1J5BzYAnWUg

You know who they sound like? The Ataris! Even his voice sounds a lot like Kris Roe's! This, once again, sounds like a song from 1998 and is really good (especially for 2007! Woah!). Even though it's way after that time, this reminds me of the music I listened to while skipping school to skate in 1999 (like The Ataris, for example). The song's off their lesser known self-released debut (and the entire thing is really good) which is on par with Let's Start a Riot. Don't listen to their "official debut" Impossible because it sounds like crappy 2005 Pop Punk (Why!? Why did they have to regress to an awful, awful sound!?) and I am hugely disappointed.

I am still not nostalgic for 2007 but this is some really good music. I dunno if my uncle bought them for me but he's bought me some weird sh!t in the past so it's not far off to think he bought me these, too. I honestly don't know where the hell I got them. I sure as hell don't remember buying them myself. Flatliner's Great Awake might of come from the Fat Wreck mailer (since they're signed to that label) but I dunno why I have Let's Start a Riot. I wanna get the Living CD if I can find it. This is really good.

Burlington seems to have a lot of good bands. ;)

The Artist Life's offical debut. It's crap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDKbnouMdDo Living is much, much better.

I made it better! Now I can contribute much more to this thread.

Yep! I'd put this baby in my discman and skate around the town! Very Gen X of me. You have you put it in a 1998-2002 playlist, though. This song almost sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the 90's songs!

Here's another:

Nowhere Slow - Home Grown (1998) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sidtSNuzHu8

It's not wrong to say that this band (and album next to 2002's Kings of Pop. See? Spirit of '98 as the sequel came out in 2002) is one of the greatest things of all time. These guys perfected the early 00's formula for everyone else to copy. Anyone who saw them open for blink's Poo Poo Pee Pee Tour in 1998 would remember how amazing Home Grown were on stage. It was incredible see all these bands on the top of their game playing at their best. You need to make a 1998-2002 playlist for this stuff! This was my go to album to skip school with in 1998. I loved it so much like you wouldn't believe.

You forgot to change the title! 2002 is utmost Xtreme! as it is a late 90's year! By the way, it's just called Disaster. I dunno why Youtube added all that random sh!t. Weird. ;D But man, are Kings of Pop and Act Your Age rad or what!? Home Grown have been always been a huge favorite of mine. Skipping school was only Xtreme in the late 90's and early 00's when frosted tip teenagers did it. If you're wondering, I never actually frosted my tips. Not once. I dyed my hair a few times but never frosted my hair. ;D

This is off a Duran Duran tribute from 1997 but this cover is super good. It's got a little bit of ska but it sounds super early 00's, especially for a song from 1997. I don't normally like tribute albums but I really like this one.

Weird. On Spotify it also has the long title. You not frosting your tips makes you sound less Xtreme. I'm disappointed. Next you're telling me you didn't even spike it (spiking your hair with gel was a 2005 early 2000s thing as well btw). You dyed your hair?? Did you dye it black?  ;)

The back of my CD just says 'Disaster'. Dirty blonde hair and frosted tips don't look good together at all. I still spike it, though! :P No way, I looked up 2005 photos and everyone had the wings haircut! Everyone in 2000-2002 had frosted tips, though. ;D I dyed it red, blue, orange, and green. Oh yeah, I also bleached the entire thing a few times, too. Never black, though. I didn't wanna be mistaken for a Justin Pearson wannabe. ;)

It's too good for a cover! This entire tribute albums is filled with good sheesh.

Here's a weird one. It's the Starting Line bringing their brand of Emo-Pop Punk and using it to cover Jennifer Lopez! I spoke too soon when I said "I guess Rap and Emo never mixed" because he does weird Emo bleached hair raps throughout the songs. Why did rap have to mix with every single rock genre in 1998-2002!? I love this cover, though. It's one of the best.

I read on Wikipedia that scene fashion stayed popular in the early '10s on the West Coast, but not on the East Coast.

From 2010-2013, the androgynous scene subculture (also known regionally as "Shamate" and "Coloridos") remained common in the West Coast United States, Europe, Australasia, parts of Asia, and Latin America, especially in the Brazilian city of Fortaleza.

I'm also going to throw a bone and say it didn't catch on in the East until 2007. 2007, 2008, early 2009 = emo shag era. 2006 was half and half.

Also, blue/green/orange hair is very late 2000s of you.  ;) Auditioning for Paramore?

That song is hilarious  ;D This is the definitive version.

Scene culture has a weird history. People called poseurs "scenesters" as far back as 1996 when I first started going to shows. Hell, in 2004, faux-Emo kids were called "scene kids", too.

Ok, fine, even though I know that this isn't true, let's just say 2000-2002 = frosted tips and spikes; 2004-onward = sh!tty slicked up hair. Deal? ;)

Ew gross. I dyed my hair blue/green/orange (no, not at the same time) because of NoFX.

Haha, I agree! So much better than the original. Jesus, the way he sings those lines is too good. Only in 1998-2002, man. Funny thing is, he can try to sound "street" when he raps but he still ends of sounding like a sad bleached hair pop punk kid. Speaking of Punky raps...

Pop Punk and Rap mixing together once again!! This song is pretty rad. He even says a line about my main man Trump (word). I dunno what it was about Pop Punk and Rap. Who thought it was a good idea and why did everyone buy the CD's? I mean it sounds good but still...

I'm not mad, don't worry. :P Rap and Rock isn't for everyone so you're fine but I don't know if you'd like the early 00's (1998-2002) very much because Rap and Rock always mixed when you least expected it (i.e. when Good Charlotte randomly add raps in their music about OJ Simpsons. Where the hell did that come from???).

The Weather or Not - d.b.s. (2001) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC_uM2-cNvs

Man, this song is too rad for words. These guys are from B.C., too! Thing about these guys is their transition into Emo is weirder than Sewing With Nancie/The Reason. So, they started in the early 90's and from 1994-1996, their albums are pure Pop Punk. Roughly, around 1997 they recorded all these Post-Hardcore/Emo songs but never released them (until 2000). Instead, in 1998, they released another album that was pretty Emo but still had a bit of their Pop Punk sound left in. Then, finally, in 1999 they went full on Post-Hardcore/Emo and continued this sound until 2001 when they broke up. Listening to this type of calm Emo sh!t brings me back to sitting outside on a warm summer night at 12 am in 1998-2002 n thinkin' 'bout sh!ts. Man, those were good times.

Ok, so Jesse (Brand New's singer) and John (Taking Back Sunday's second singer. The less whiny one) liked the same girl, right? So John made out with her and Jesse got super pissed and they both blew it out of proportion and these songs were created. Almost the entire albums (Your Favorite Weapon/Tell All Your Friends) are about each other and how much of a sh!thead they think they are. It is not poetic in a MySpace way! This is poetic in a 1998 Keepsake/Lifetime/Save The Day way. ;)

Yeah... I saw that... >:( How on earth is a 2002 album a part of the "fudgin myspaze dazy lol"!? People can say what they want about every other TBS/Brand New album but their first albums are real classic Emo albums. I really like Your Favorite Weapon, too. It's their best. Thoughts on Tell All You Friends? That album is kinda funny because you can tell it's pre-Myspace (I shake my fist at that guy) because of how off key they're singing. This sound is straight outta the late 90s! >:(

See, I told ya! They're so Emo that they can't even confine their emotions to themselves; they have to take them out on other people. ;D

You Are The One - The Kobanes (2009) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX08nJmtdlg

I'm listening to this because the drummer of this band recommended me his stuff so I decided to give it a listen. So far this is my favorite of theirs. They are a rude, crude, un-PC throwback to the mid 90's-early 00's style of Pop Punk. Some of their albums are even a bit more late 80's-ish (not this one). I am surprised this came out in 2009! Better than the MySpace garbage from 2004-2007.

Haha, I can see why the intro would make you think that but then it goes into straight 1995 Pop Punk! The drummer is a really cool dude. I've been talking to him recently and he knows all the right bands. He's roughly the same age as me which makes me feel more connected when listening to this band as these dudes are of my own age.

Yes, yes. It's Nu Metal Rappy Pop Punk but it's the only thing close to Nu Metal (and Breaking Benjamin's debut) that I like. Yes, they rap about "frontin'" and "puttin' ya handz up" but it's a good song, dammit! It reminds me of both: a summer afternoon in 2002 sittin' around and having Rap Metal Pepsi commercials infiltrate my television every 5 minutes and a warm summer night in 2002 once again having Rap Metal Pepsi commercials infiltrate my television every 5 minutes. Good times...

Good. I am glad you took a good listen to the 2002 Rap Rock goodness. ;)

I like the one without the monks in the background but I am glad that commercial exists in general because it brings back good memories of the good ol' days. The lyrics are pretty bland 'cause they're all about "yo u wuz frontin n I aint answerin my phone smoke up up ya handz up" but the lyrics and vibe of the music brings you right back. Of course! 2002 was when we saw the real Simple Plan take the stage. The spirit of 1998 was strong with them in those days. You know, I still own their first CD along with Reset's first two.

Do you think the heartbreak of a poor Pop Punk soul is funny?? Do you realize how hard the early 00s were to live through? We had to fight back with Zebrahead and Sum 41. No wonder Good Charlotte added all those raps in their songs. Clearly their girlfriends were leaving them but they had to think fast. "Yo, I can rap too! OJ Simpson killed his wife but there ain't no 25 ta life!"

No, I will write a Rap Rock song about it. ;)

Man, so many good memories of Strung Out. I believe this album was one of Sum 41's biggest inspirations for Does This Look Infected. This song is pure Pop Punk but a lot of the other songs are pretty Pop Punk-Metal. One of the best bands from my youth. 8)

Liking Sum 41 in Canada would have probably got you all the girls lol :P Zebrahead are okay, they're the one band you keep mentioning that I have mixed opinions on ;D

Allister though is the greatest! I'm loving both the albums you linked, a lot of great songs on those two, this one being one of my favourites. It's my first time watching its MV though, it has a fun vibe. :D

I can't wait to see what Jordan thinks of the song  ;D

Oh no...

Jesus, this is post-Justin Zebrahead, too! 8-P I forgot how bad Matty's singing was at accompanying Ali with his raps. This is just as bad as their cover of "Girlfriend"... Waste of Mind to MFZB kicked ass but when Justin left in 2004, it's clear to me that they had to succumb to low levels just to eat a meal. The real 00's were not kind. Justin's still a cool guy, though. I see why he left the train wreck in 2004 when faux-Emo was taking over. What's Rap Rock doing in 2006, anyway? It died in 2003!

Yeah, I guess it was their way of bringing rap rock to the true 00s. This is more like rap-emo ;D

There are two versions of the song. That one just features Matty and Ali. Now here is the version that features the entire band:

Man, this is disappointing. I hadn't heard much of Zebrahead after MFZB but oh man... This just isn't good. It's like, you take Rap Rock and make it for MySpace! 8-P How'd they go from the greats like Get Back, Playmate of the Year and Into You to... this!?!?! It's 'cause Justin left. Justin was a super cool dude. He was the glue of Zebrahead and when he left they took a turn for the worst. Back in the day, they were one of the best Pop Punk-Rap bands next to the Sums and Good Charlotte but it's unfortunate the real 00's got to 'em.

Is it because they had rap in their songs? Apparently mixing Rap and Rock got all the women in 2000-2002. Haha, 1 ain't bad. ;)

Yeah, man! Last Stop Suburbia is a classic Pop Punk album! Too many good songs on their first, too. It does! Man, it totally takes me back to those days. You find my comment below? Early 00's in a nutshell, man. 8)

Glad you like the songs but... Sonic kissing a chick actually happened in the game!? Like... A human chick? What the f*ck! Why did they allow that?

Do you know the Mountain Dew Voltage that they sell in stores? That tastes that sour Pepsi Blue, basically. A berry Pepsi. Man, it's like the early 00s in drink form (the Rap Metal commercials helped make it feel that way, too). It's nothing like the sh!tty Sonic. ;)

Strung Out will always be one of my favorite bands. This is another album that got me though high school (a.k.a. an album I'd listen to while skipping). I love this song! You can really hear the early 2000's taking shape right here. Brings me back to the days of skateboarding, sippin' on some Pepsi Blue and Surge while playing the mighty PS1/PS2. 8)

AND IT FEELS LIKE I'M LIVING THE WORST DAY OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!!!!

Man, that song is hilarious. His biggest problem is that he can't hit the snooze button on his alarm clock in the morning when he wants to keep sleeping... Aaahhh, good times listening to Simple Plan in simple ol' 2002 when it still felt like 1998. How I miss those days... 8)

Wondering and My Bloody Valentine - Good Charlotte (2002) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2y-90tSkyg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gSz7QyQ4Pg

Young and Hopeless is such a good record I can just listen to it over and over again! Wondering, I think, is the best song off the album or at least it's up there. It's so simple and catchy and reminds me of something off of Lit's A Place in the Sun. How can you beat that? My Bloody Valentine is really good as well, my favorite part is the catchy verses. It sounds like a Sum 41 song if Sum 41 sang about killing the boyfriends of girls they like.

I love everything about that album! Growing up I would hang out at two neighbourhoods, mine and the one across the street. The one across the street was social housing and mine was lower middle class-ish and in 2003 whenever I hopped over to a friend's house in the other neighbourhood, they'd start blasting Lifestyles Of The Rich And The Famous  >:( they wanted to rob my house! They wouldn't let me listen to the song by myself either. But I used my mad stacks and bought the album for myself. Serves them right.  8)

Hahaha! Did they start rapping about the evils of OJ Simpson and the crack smoking mayor of DC at you, too? That's a funny story. Good thing you used your mad stacks to buy the album yourself because it's one of the best. A lot of sounds from that album sound strongly influenced by MxPx's Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo. Hahaha, I haven't gone through a heartbreak since... 1996/1997-ish? Yeah, man, The Ataris rule! The whole album is up on YouTube, though. Just look up "Look Forward to Failure by The Ataris" and you'll find it. Mark Hoppus even does guest vocals on one song!

The Unsung Zeros are another super rad band, man! He definitely has that standard Pop Punk voice.

Timberwolves at New Jersey - Taking Back Sunday (2002) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PBy3Lwi4Lo

I was listening to this album a few days ago and I never realized how god damn cynical they are. They're Emo but they aren't even that whiny; I mean, they are but they've got more of a pissy and finger pointer-y edge than other bands. This song in particular. The best part is their clever videos. This has probably gotta be one of the best pre-historic Emo videos of all time.

Unwritten Law is just a good ol' fashioned speedy Pop Punk band in general! This one's super rad. All their albums from Blue Room to Elva are some of the best Pop Punk released during that time period and will always remain some favorites of mine.

Inside - Sw1tched (2002) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2GNB5pOQsA

I probably shouldn't admit to liking this song but I can't help but it enjoy it. It's all Nu Metally but it's got a Pop Punk edge to it; enough for me to listen to and enjoy. I remember when this was a pretty big hit in 2002 back when it was played over the radio and MTV. I remember simply walking into the Warped Tour to find out "oh boy! Sw1tched are playing! Gee whiz, I'm thrilled to see another Nu Metal band on Warped!" I still like to listen to this song every once in a while...

The comments on another video (which isn't HQ like this one) are the best 'cause it's a buncha dudes around my age talking about how sh!tty music got after 2003. It's good that others also embrace the facts about how, when the faux-90's/what-if 00's ended, music died along with it.

Hey Catrine - Lifetime (1997) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLTUHMx8F7g

I've been listening to some Lifetime recently and I just had to post this rad song. These guys are some of the best and definitely something you shouldn't miss out on. Back in the early 00's, a lot of Emo-Pop Punk bands would make records that were all about trying to do your own version of Jersey's Best Dancers. I remember when Taking Back Sunday first came out with Tell All Your Friends and they were often referred to as a "slightly more polished version of Lifetime". I definitely agree with that and it's too bad TBS couldn't continue sounding like Lifetime on their later records. They really lost a lot when John Nolan left the band in 2003...

Jersey's Best Dancers is a really good Emo-Pop Punk album that you should check out if you like TBS and The Movielife. It's even got a lot of good speedy parts!

Those dudes in the Taking Back Sunday video are dressing very real 2000s emo :o this leads credence to my theory that the core 2000s possibly started late 2002.

I really like that Unwritten Law song :D

You're going to make me start liking Nu Metal... That song wasn't half bad. :o I guess there's more to this genre than Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park.

That Lifetime song sounds very similar to another 90s song I heard recently. I can't find it anymore though :( Great song though O0

What!? How!! >:( As you see, his hair is cut above the eyes, which was very common to do starting around 1995/1996. Justin Pearson looked more real 00s Emo in 1996, so I guess 1996 is real 00's, too? It is not! I saw many, many kids dressed just like Adam when I first got into Emo in 1995. This was nothing new in 2002. He is also wearing a small chain on his jeans with visible keys, very much a mid 90s emo thing. I see no make up, no fringes, no skinny jeans (I see regular gap jeans), no nail polish, nothing. The real 00's did not begin until 2003 at the earliest! The rest of the guys all have short hair, too! I don't know what video you're even watching! This is ridiculous! You must be watching Fall Out Boy's "A little Less Sixteen Candles, A little more Taxi Driver" or Panic at the Disco's "I Write Sh!tty Music, What a tragedy!" and forgot what video you were on and thought "Oh! This must be 2002 Taking Back Sunday!" I decide to share my music with you and you go off insulting it with your cruel words! Very, very upset and disappointed with the things you say. You are spitting upon the great early 00s with your words!!

I'm glad you like it!

No! Nu Metal is terrible and there are no good songs... Ok, maybe a few... ...Like one or two, maybe...

Yeah, man, Lifetime rules but you gotta take back what you said about Taking Back Sunday 'cause that's just disrespectful.

I don't not know why I continue to post in such a blasphemous thread... My god, some of the words spoken here are akin to support Trump policies (I do not see how they are dressing like real 00s emo, you are blind!!) but... I will post some more...

Grow Up - Home Grown (1998) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7zcsyebNCI

I like how they made two Simple Plan references in this song before Simple Plan even existed. It even sounds like a Simple Plan song! Home Grown never disappoint (actually, never mind, their 2004 EP was a big disappointment), they are always usually super good.

Somewhere on Fullerton - Allister (2002) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XMPOmuJOUk

omg he haz dah frosted tipses n dey r dressed like duh 90s but dis video iz from l8 2002 how can dis b!!! :o :o This song is always gonna rule. Allister's best album is Last Stop Suburbia but Dead Ends ain't too far behind!

Leave it Alone/Dig - NoFX (1994) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ATYG4R4Hkg

Just listenin' to some good ol' Punk in Drublic. This is one of the very first Pop Punk albums I discovered back in 1994 after getting into Dookie and Smash. Changed my life...

Top Secret - The Parasites (1999) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YNsU83A_0U

I guess this song is probably a real 00s song too by some twisted logic... ::) Mhmm, yep...

This song's off an old comp I've got from Go Kart Records. It's called "Go Kart vs. The Corporate Giant 2" (obviously) and yes, I also own the first one. It's pretty rad! Got loads of good bands on it; this one is one of my favorites.

Also, have you seen the new Alternative Press issue?

You linked me Grow Up, Somewhere on Fullerton and a Passage in Time before. You tryna test me? I know cause I couldn't stop listening to Somewhere on Fullerton lol.

I like the saxophone in the NoFx song LOL

The Top Secret sing starts with "every second seems to last forever" which kind of sounds like "every summer seems to be last forever" in the Summer of '69 song. Of course I'm talking about the Bowling For Soup version, not the Bryan Adams one. So this song is definitely heading for the Spirit of 04 when they released the cover.

Song is awesome though! I love Go Karts, but I'm not sure if I like Corporate Giants more. Hard choice.

Those guys have spikey hair. Isn't this what you wanted :o

Ain't nuttin' but a 1998 thing, homie. The spirit of 1998 is strong with all these songs. Somewhere on Fuller is too sick, man! Absolutely one of my favorites from way back when!

Haha, me too. NoFX does a lot of that kinda thing when they go all Ska.

WHAT!? YOU EVEN SAY THESE THINGS ABOUT 1999, TOO!? I just... I just don't know what to say about that... No heading to spirit of 2004 here... >:(

Go Karts have pretty good Pop Punk. Corporate Giants don't. Well, I guess they do? It's hard to say.

That isn't spiky hair! Those are those stupid slicked back haircuts. See, you keep saying 1999, 1997, 2002, 1996, 1941 is heading for the "spirit of 2004" and now look what you've done! You've got Weezer and Panic at the Disco colaborating with each other... >:(

What!? No!!! First of all, Weezer is the band that made pre-historic Emo somewhat mainstream in 1994 with their whining. They're ok, but definitely not Punk... And... Panic at the Disco!? No, of course they won't bring back Punk Rock! They were never Punk!!! Not even Pop Punk! How does that one Fever album even count as Pop Punk, anyway!? See? You kept saying crap about "oh 1997 had the spirit of 2004" and now look! Did you look!? Take another good look...

http://www.altpress.com/images/uploads/news/Header-717x463.jpg

This is all your fault! You let the alternate 1997 universe seep into the real world and now I bet if I were to time travel back to 1997, it would be gone... Replaced with Emo fringes and Myspace... All thanks to you! >:(

They have to be bootcuts or fitted jeans (no, not skinny!) from the gap, though. What if they bought them from Walmart!? That is false Emo and not true to the fashion.

Also, no. Rivers has always been an Emo nerd so him, sure, but douche-whatever-his-face will never be a part of that! Man, this is awful. Why are Weezer and Panic at the Disco even collaborating!? What sense does this make? None!!!

Yeah... You see, back in the good old days Emo used to mean bands like Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional, (old) Taking Back Sunday, Weezer, The Get Up Kids, etc. Now, you kids, you ruined it and even worse you're taking Weezer with you...  >:( >:(

I will listen to some Jimmy Eat World instead of this Panic at the Disco nonsense...

Haha, I don't know why. I just remember when the Ska kids all decided one by one "hey, how about we go Emo and listen to Weezer!" in the late 90's and early 00's. It was only the kids because none of the bands did this.

New Found Glory had made some sweet movie about Pop Punk featuring all of their wacky hi-jinx. Naturally, I thought "Oh! Rad! I gotta go see this!" but then it got real weird. My mother came up to me, while I was on the couch in our old house watching MTV, and said "Oh, Jordan! How wonderful! This new movie sounds lovely. I would love to take the whole family out to see it!" which is odd because my mother is very neutral towards Pop Punk. The day of the movie comes and me, my mother, brother, sister and father are all in the car off to see New Found Glory's new movie about Pop Punk and then it gets weirder. During the drive it was early afternoon but when we arrived at the theater it was late at night (I guess time didn't work properly in the 90s!?). We go inside and get our seats and the movie begins. It's pretty sweet 'cause the first thing that pops up is the video for My Friends Over You, which causes me to remark how I love the 90's and everything from it (except Grunge and sandwiches). I don't remember what else happens in the movie but apparently I really liked it because after the movie is over we go outside and I look back at the theater with tears in my eyes because of how good the movie was. I just stood there thinking to myself about how the 90's are going to live forever. What's next is some dumb old neighborhood from when I was a kid came up to my mother and started having a conversation about the movie but in the way stupid old people talk about things. "Oh, did you see when the man with the spiky hair did those jumps on stage?" I went into my car and a bunch of Home Grown is playing on the stereo. My dad is in the front seat, turns around and holds up 'Act Your Age' and says "This is my favorite CD" with a sh!t-eating grin on his face. My dad likes some Green Day songs and he took me to their concerts when I was 12/13 so this isn't too weird but it was just so random because we were watching a New Found Glory movie, not a Home Grown movie. Then, I say to myself "I can't wait for blink-182 to make a movie next" and wake up. I shook my wife to wake up and told her what happened and she just gave me a funny look and rolled her eyes because "you always have stupid dreams like this. Let me sleep for a few more hours." I just felt like sharing my dream. ;)

No, I should start writing one! I could keep one here too if I have any more dreams about Pop Punk bands. ;) Portland wishes they had the 90s but the only thing they've got are hipsters and bad music. 8-P

See? Perfect! When you have your first breakup you can wear salvation army sweaters and cry to Nintendo 89. Oooooor, you can be Pop Punk-Emo and just cry about things with spiky hair. ;)

Yo, I prolly sent too much Gob last time for you to sink in so I will send one at a time.

I am sitting here thinking and my problem is figuring out: do Gob sound like Home Grown or do Home Grown sound like Gob? Does every Pop Punk band 1998-onward-but-pre-2003 just sound like Home Grown? I do not know but my bets are on yes. People can say Enema of the State invented that sound but it's not the first album to have that sound. Even Lit's A Place in the Sun came out before Enema. Anyway, this song rules. I used to skate to this a whole lot back in the day.

Now these are incredible songs with great hooks and good melodies but the problem here is that I got the sandwich thrown at me and that other girl broke up with me "yo cuz i wuznt cool enuff" (like Good Charlotte says) in 1995. These songs came out in the early 00's and I was not going through girl troubles then so I could not listen to these and cry about women.

Very scandalous!

It's not bad but I am not holding my breath.

That song could of been really good if they cut out the 21st Century Breakdown Tim Burton sound effect sh!t in the verses. Hope the third single (and rest of the album) is more like bootleg-Bad Religion like Bang Bang was.

This band is kinda weird. Their early records from what I'm hearing so far are good but around 2014-2015 they had an image change and started sounding more like the mid 00's. I don't get it! ???

Better Luck Next Time - Gone But Not Forgotten (2011) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqfAUlUAIL4

This is the only album I've heard from these guys but I really like it! Classic sound. Both bands kind of remind me of Allister.

What does MFMGF stand for? :o Decent!

I really liked the BLNT song. They're better than a lot of early 2000s stuff, proving once again what the real superior era is  :-X

I'm not too sure but it's a really good song! Here's another from their 2014 EP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m6ntYRzojc

I think they're just as good! :P Have you heard their 2013 album We'll Take it From Here? I'm listening to it right now and it's got a lot of NoFX influence. So good! Listen to this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsdP9LYDj38

Hmm you said they started sounding mid-2000s afterwards, this still sounds very 1999 to me :D

I should really give BLNT another try. I know I said I only like that kind of sound in a historical context, but BLNT is proving me wrong ;D

Oh yeah, it totally does! This is where they start to sound more mid 00's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k690efG09Y The song sounds like 1999 turning into 2005.

You totally should. I've been listening to a bunch of their songs and they're a consistently good band. Solid Pop Punk!

My fave could betta. ::)

I know it does, it totally sucks because I'm actually really into their two early records. 2005 all over again. >:( I'm glad Better Luck Next Time have continued playing standard Pop Punk. They haven't let me down. I think they're all fairly close to my age (I think? They've been around since 2004 so... maybe late 80s born?), which is probably why. :P

Since emo seems to be all the rage on the board these days, I thought why not revive this thread ;D

I'm really enjoying The All-American Reject's When The World Comes Down album. It's very cheesy!

Not listening to it right now but this makes up a large part of my music collection. One of my favorites from the top of my head is Boys Like Girls' debut album.
