Subject: When did you feel like the 00's ended?

Written By: Baltimoreian on 02/13/16 at 10:02 am

To me, I felt like it ended during late 2010. Sure, there were a few transitions here and there, but it was like a desert after that transition. If you were wondering, I think the transition started in late 2009.

2009 marked the end of the 2000's and the beginning of the 2010's culturally.

2006. 2007-2009 was its own thing.

Summer of '08 with Michael Phelps winning all those Gold medals was the last of the core 2000s moments.

Late 2008 with the Obama election and early 2009 with his inauguration was the the transition, it's when the Bush 2000s backlash came full circle.

I'd say by Fall 2009 the 2010s were already in full swing. My opinion of course; people experience years differently.

2008-2009 can be said for when the 2010s culture had started.

I could agree with this. Fall 2009 was when the 2000s started to get less cultural.

Fall 2009.

Late 2008 through fall 2009 was the transition but were still a part of '00s culture.  I don't understand how people can say 2008 and even most of 2009 were true '10s years when there was still so much '00s culture in place at the time.  By the end of 2009 though, it really felt like the '10s had arrived.

2010 still had some leftover '00s culture.  You still saw scene kids, logo t-shirts were still big, and hip-hop was still in its late '00s era (focus on autotune and synth melodies over trap beats), but by that point those things were clearly on their way out.

Spring 2009 is when I think 2010s culture began to surpass 2000s culture, but I don't think the 2000s completely died until 2011, when Blackberry phones started to really decline, Osama Bin Laden was slain, the final Harry Potter movie came out, post-grunge and pop punk/emo were entirely erased from the mainstream, and the Bush '43 Iraq War ended.

Interesting question. I felt it ended around late 2008, like around November/December of 2008. At the latest by Spring 2009.

Subject: Re: When did you feel like the 00's ended?

The way I look at it is this.

2008: Dominant '00s, emerging '10s
2009: Equal '00s and '10s (leaning more '10s in the latter part of the year)
2010: Dominant '10s, '00s phasing out

For late 2008 and early 2009, it depends on if you were on the cutting edge of culture or behind.  At that time, you could be emo/scene or hipster and you would be in style either way.  Or you could still wear A&F or American Eagle logo t's.  People tend to look back on those years as being more '10s than they actually were.

I was in 7th grade at the time and it was definitely a mixture like you said. I remember A LOT of name brand polo shirts popping up throughout that school year, and by late 2009 the style was in full effect.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/rapgenius/ralph-lauren-create-your-polo.jpg

Same goes for American Eagle and Aeropostale as well, and TBH I miss the name brand polo styles and color match ups people used to do a lot from 2009-2012, before hipster and other style changes took over.

Emo was on its last legs in early 2009, extinct by 2009-10 school year. As for the logo Ts, I found they were much more brighter and colourful in 2009-10 school year than the other years.

I want to say that 2009-10 was the first full 2010s school year. When I watch movies like 21 Jump Street it captures the 2010s high school experience perfectly. The movie contrasts early 2000s high school (which seemed somewhat similar to 2006-07 my first year of high school) with the new 2010s style high school very well (how 2009-10 went for me). The movie was filmed 2011, released 2012. It was very refreshing to see a high school movie that wasn't all jocks beating up nerds or cheerleaders spreading idle gossip for once  ;D

From my experience I would say both the 2009-10 and 2010-11 school years. Logo shirts and color schemes peaked my last year of middle school and freshman year of high school. It slowly started declining my sophomore year while it was on its last legs, and it was pretty much dead by my junior year.

Yes, that sounds about right, my experiences are the same. I stopped buying any new ones sometime around mid-2011 and stopped wearing them regularly late 2012. If by "color schemes" you mean neon colours, then I was still going for that as late as mid-2014. But I loved that trend so much, it was hard to let it go ;D

For example, here's a yellow polo shirt with the blue colored sign on it.

then someone would where a blue t-shirt under it, matching the color of the polo sign

http://d1x7zurbps6occ.cloudfront.net/product/xlarge/263732-96148.jpg

now here's some inverted blue & yellow polo shoes and a hat

Then any style of jeans or brown pants someone wants to wear along with it. I noticed A LOT of people doing this with not just Ralph Lauren, but also American Eagle, Rocawear, Aeropostale, Nike, etc. brands as well throughout 2009-2012.

But... They said "High School 2005" at the beginning. Early 00's is not! >:(

I have a question which I am having a hard time finding the answer for. What time span would be the Vicks Moisturizer V-Neck era? 2007-2012? 2009-2011? I am not sure.

That's easy for me bro! The 2008-09 school year it felt like the end of an era fro good and the beginning of a new one.
2007-08, may have been the final core 00s season. But 2008-09 was the biggest transitional time for me I've EVER EXPERIENCED!

LOL no wonder it felt so similar to 2006-07! I was thinking "hmmm, shouldn't early 2000s high school be slightly different from 2006?"  ;D That just drives the point home.

Ermm, I'm not sure. I think v-necks were pretty popular 2008/9? I only started putting moisturizer on in 2010 i think, but that was just me. I don't think other dudes were wearing any moisturizer, I left them all in the dust and stole all their girls, even though I didn't want their girls.

Hahaha. There wasn't enough Nu Metal, bleached hair and Puka Shell necklackes. If I didn't notice the "2005" part, the missing elements would of gave it away in a second!

That makes sense to me but all those All Time Low videos are from 2007. Did it take a while for it to actually catch on, though? When did the era end? 2011 or 2012? Haha, you're a chick magnet (MxPx reference) even though you don't like chicks! ;D When I was in Middle School, I had a girl throw a sandwich at me once because she didn't like my shirt.

The only thing about that scene was that the song that was playing was "The Real Slim Shady" which is from the year 2000. It basically made it look like 2005 and 2000 were from the same era.

Yeah I agree with this. Summer/Fall of 2008 we started to see 10's culture and 00's culture dying down but 2011 was the year all 2000s culture was completely gone and replaced with 2010's culture.

2011 was the first year we were totally in the 2010's. This year smartphones overtook slider phones and Blackberries were declining. Electropop music was at its peak in 2011. We were introduced to so many more new 10's artists. Tablets were growing hugely in popularity, Windows 8 was announced, new fashion and attitudes were in, social media mobile apps started getting popular, MySpace was finally seen as dead.

Electropop music peaked throughout all of 2010 too. 2011 is a good pick. In fact, I would say that the 2010-2011 school year was the peak of the electropop era and the quintessential early 2010's overall. I remember staying in New York for the entire week back in Summer 2011, that was the early 2010's in its prime alright!

It was very abrupt, with the Great Recession, election of Obama, and Lady Gaga upending the music industry. There was no 90s to 2000s bridge like the Y2K era.

I was just about to mention that. Was their ever a bridge that connected the decades together during the 2000s - 2010s transistion? All of those things you mention made the change very sudden instead of gradual.  :-\\

2000 didn't feel like the 90s, 2000 felt like the late 90s. The late 90s felt like the early 2000s and a hint of what was to come in the 2000s. The real 90s have nothing to do with that era. Everyone keeps saying the early 00's were an extension of the 90s, which simply isn't true. The same can be said for the late 90s being the early part of the 00's. Y2K was an era of its own.

When people say the early 2000's (2000-2003) was an extension of the 90's, they mean that there was a lot of late 90's cultural things that carried on throughout the early 2000's. 2000 was still a completely late 90's cultural year, since Bill Clinton was still president and it was basically a continuation of 1998 & 1999 pop culturally. 2001 was half late 90's and half early 2000's, it was the transition from late 90's to early 2000's since George Bush became president and a lot of 2000's cultural defining things would start that year. 2002 was the first full year things in society felt more 2000's than 90's, and at the same time it was the quintessential early 2000's year, but there were still many late 90's fad's out there relevant. 2003 was the final nail in the coffin for late 90's influences, the last gasp any was relevant, by then it was only 10% late 90's leftover while everything else was strictly 2000's, 2003 was still an early 2000's cultural year but at the same time marked the beginning of a lot of core 2000's trends, and by 2004 everything was 100% 2000's. Nobody is saying that the early 2000's was exactly like the core 90's. Don't take it literally man.

There were a lot of core 90s shows that were still airing new episodes in 1998, like Seinfeld, Animaniacs, Babylon 5, Deep Space Nine, and the last good season of The Simpsons.  Alternative rock acts like Alanis Morissette, Everclear, Jewel, Blessid Union of Souls, etc. were still really successful (though they'd still be popular deeper into the Y2K era as well).  The Internet, while growing momentum every day, still hadn't reached every household quite yet.  Power Rangers was still more well-known than Pokémon, despite the latter coming out that autumn.  1998 was definitely free of any serious mid-90s influence, but it was still a very 90s year and not quite as directly comparable to the early 2000s as 1999 was.

Summer of '97 (Amsterdam) and Summer of '98 (Athens/London) are still the best summers of my life, despite occuring very early in my childhood. I should really visit more exotic places, North America is kind of boring lol.  :D

I'd say the year after(late 1998) it was in complete FULL effect! A total millennial era world.

I think of 1997 & 1998 as early millennial, which still had A LOT of core 90's influences, 1999-2001 as the peak of the millennial, and 2002 & 2003 as late millennial which was the true early 2000's period and the last of millennial influences. It could be debatable that 1997 & 1998 is still part of the core 90's, even though a lot of people consider it as the beginning of the millennial era, while it could be debatable that 2002 & 2003 is still part of the millennial era, even though a lot of people think it shouldn't anymore. I think of it that way.

TV in 1997 and 1998 was transitional. You had the old shows (as you've mentioned) that would be going off the air thoughout 1998 and you also had newer shows that would be very popular throughout the early 2000's. Though, some shows that defined the 90's like Full House and the Fresh Prince already went off the air by 1996 and 1997. The internet was already pretty big as of 1997 and definitely much bigger than it had big during the mid 90's. I never watched Power Rangers or Pokemon nor did they really effect me so I'm not gonna touch those. The Simpsons thing is kind of subjective. I know lots of people say it stopped being in around 1999 and I'm not saying it's a bad point or anything as it helps with figuring out the perception of the times I enjoyed the show until roughly around 2006 so that's not necessarily true for everyone.

Anyway, 1998 will always be the first-post 90's year to me. Always has. Even while living though it, it felt different to me than 1993-1997 did. Stuff like the absence of Beavis and Butthead and Grunge being the in thing.

This.  1998-2001 was its own era.  It was closer culturally to the '00s but it wasn't quite there, and was very different from the core '90s.

I would say this decade is shaping up similar, with 2009-2012 being a mini-era that isn't quite '00s but not quite '10s.

I feel like 2009-2012 was distinctly 2010s, and not really all that different from the mid-2010s to be honest. Maybe as time goes on the difference might be more noticeable, but for the most part the mid-2010s have been building on the early 2010s.

So, if I dress like 2010 (skinny jeans, V-Neck, tons of vicks, women's sweaters) I'll still be cool and hip, right? Same with listening to "Pop Punk" from the late 00's-early 10's. Is that still in too?

Err, I don't know about women's sweaters or where you got that from, but yes to the other clothing items  ;D

Pop-punk died in 2005 or something. Why do you think they call everything afterwards a "revival", even the bands that come in 2016  :P It still hasn't been revived.

All the cool kids have been listening to EDM since 2008/2009. I wish there were more bands like Neon Trees though. If 2010s rock was defined by this sound it would have been pretty unique and great, no silly pop-punk or any other revivals. Unfortunately it didn't happen >_<

Well, they look like women's sweaters so I call it as I see it. Same with the jeans. Are you sure those aren't little sister jeans? ???

Pop Punk died in June 2004! >:( We should name 'em "Sister Jeans Pop" instead.

But I'd rather listen to All Time Low than this! I already know the names of the late 00's/early 10's bands so all I need to do is actually listen to them! 8-P Beesssiidddess, I thought you liked bands like Man Overboard or Hit the Lights or whatever.

This.

A lot has changed since the 2009-2012 period.  The big three of the electropop era, Gaga, Ke$ha, and Perry, have not had any recent hits.  Fashion has changed since then even more than music has.  As far as pop-punk, I don't really consider anything newer than 2005 to be the same genre.  Evan bands like All Time Low were losing popularity rapidly by late 2009.

This is why I am starting to see the early Obama era as its own mini-era similar to the Y2K era.  It bridges decades and its culture doesn't fit squarely with either.  Whether it has more ties to the '00s or '10s, well that depends.  I think the fashion of 2009-2012 had more ties to the '00s while the music had more ties to the '10s.  Politics is '10s all the way and tech is split, with the truly revolutionary iPad coming out in 2010.

You gotta give the 2010s a chance man. Not everything can sound like 80s/90s/early 2000s. It would be extremely boring if everything tried to copy those eras lol.

Skinny jeans are superior to baggy jeans, any day of the week. Early 2000s nostalgia will not change my mind on that  :P

I have not heard of those bands. I keep saying, you know more about late 2000s rock than I do  ;D

There's no pop-punk revival in my 2010s. Keep that crap in 2007  8-P I like "hipster rock" as you call it though. Imagine Dragons and Arkells  :D

But... But... It's awful! If we tried to copy those eras, I think society would improve drastically! Actually, scratch that because when kids do nostalgia movements it always comes off as a cheap imitation that's never true to the original spirit~.

So, you're telling me that pants 20X times your size (made by Dickies™) and a chain wallet (made by Dickies™) is not as appealing as jeans 30X times too small? I think baggy Dickies win here.

But I thought you liked late 00's bands? :o Are you telling me you never listened to We the Kings while you teased your hair or tried on skinny jeans while a Every Avenue song was playing in the background? I don't think you're a real 00's teen because all the 00's teens did the same thing.

"Does this Cute Is What We Aim For CD look good with my sisters sweater?"
- Every teen of 2007

Well... Actually, there is. It's a pretty big thing but it's awful! It sounds like 2005 Pop Punk or something. Oh yeah! Hipster Rock! That's phase 2 of "Little Sister Jeans Pop" in my opinion. 8-P

Didn't Katy Perry's album release late 2013? It was a major release. Gaga and Ke$ha fell off the map way early on, like 2010/2011. What about Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Flo Rida, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Flo Rida, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, Drake, Ludacris and many others who made their debut in the early '10s and still dominate the charts in 2015/16.

2009-2012 fashion definitely has more ties to the mid-2010s, unless your definition of late 2000s is 2007-2009, where you just grabbed a lot of cultural 2010s anyway. My definition of pure late 2000s is Late 2006 - mid 2008, and this is pretty much how the average person was dressing

Watch Breaking Bad (aired 2008, filmed 2007) and you won't see many v-necks and skinny jeans. It's got late 2000s fashion down to a T. Rock bands aren't representative, if we did that we'd think everyone in the 80s had clown make up or dudes were wearing eyeliner and skinny jeans in 2004.

I saw Aaron Paul in a KoRn video once. He was getting bullied while KoRn was bitching about the kids who make fun of them. KoRn are a hilarious band.

Wasn't that stupid wavy bangs haircut more popular than Aaron's short hair in the mid-late 00's, though?

Heh, the kids at school made fun of me for having a regular side-sweep and not having my hair stand upwards (like Aaron Paul's). People used to use the whole tub of hair gel to spike their hair, it was gross.  8-P

Maybe only 10-15% of kids had wavy bangs. Most other kids had normal haircuts though.

No way! I thought every kid had that hair back then! At least, that's how I remember it. Still not as cool as the spiky bleached hair in the early 00's. Now that's the real way to spike your hair.

Naw. It was there but I wouldn't say everyone had it. You see, this is why TV shows and movies are a better way of gauging fashion than rock videos. No one looked like Neon Trees in 2010 or Good Charlotte in 2002, I mean come on  ;D

Welllll... I remember quite a lot of kids looking like Good Charlotte in 2002. Especially Gothic and Nu Metal kids but definitely not everyone. They all looked more like the Dell Dude. In 2010, everyone looked like All Time Low for sure. Literally everyone under 21.

No way man. People on this board keep saying scene peaked in 2010, while at my school looking at all the old emo/(scene) pictures of everybody was always a way to get a cheap laugh.  ;D

Side fringes were popular but not that All-Time Low style. Hair was a lot shorter. I personally went for a crewcut that year. 2009-10 I remember short hair being really popular, not that ridiculously long hair those All Time Low guys are sporting  8-P

Maybe my area is different, since I don't remember seeing scene at all in 2009-10, and even in 2008-09 anything emo/scene was on its last legs.

Having shorter sides than the top was pretty popular by 2008 going by my actual yearbook, but not undercuts just yet.

I still see scene kids to this day! Not very often this year but I saw quite a bit of them last year. Last legs in 2009 and 2010, though? I remember it still being huge, huge by then. Weird stuff, man. Here I am thinking 2010 was defined by All Time Low, Every Avenue and We The Kings. Wow.

Undercuts is 2012, I assume? What is an undercut anyway?

I remember making fun of my friend because he happened to have Justin Bieber's haircut  ;D I think Justin Bieber killed bangs/long hair for sure :P

Yeah, 2012/2013 sounds about right for undercuts. It's basically buzzing your sides to a very short length while keeping the top rather long. Different from the early '10s style because no one would actually buzz their sides, just cut it shorter.

Depends on where you were.  In 2008 and into the first half of 2009, probably 80% of white guys in my area had this cut or some variation of it.

That haircut died pretty quick after Bieber came out and late teen/twentysomething guys didn't want to be associated with him.

The late 00s and early 10s are probably the most confusing time in history. I wanted to call this the "Vicks Moisturizer V-Neck era" or maybe the "Little Sister Jeans era phase 1" but now I'm not too sure and the fun's been ruined. Thanks guys, thanks a lot.

It was the end of 2013, so pretty much 2014, so two years ago. Dark Horse released December 2013 and it has a billion views on YouTube, and she performed at the Superbowl in 2015. The Interview, which came out the end of 2014 (so basically last year) also pretty much meme-fied her song Firework. She's still a very dominant cultural force. This is How We Do flopped because it was genuinely an awful song, I think she should have picked International Smile which would have been a great summer hit especially since the FIFA World Cup in Brazil was happening at the same time.

Yeah, I also remember that hairstyle being popular in 2008. And Justin Bieber's iconic hair definitely killed it ;D

David Beckham in 2009 and 2010 captures it perfectly I think.

Yes! I'd say the hairstyle peaked around 2008-2012.

2013 is when it changed, there was this box haircut revival, or the fade cut style with straight hair or curly hair, and I remember some folks mixing the style with blond streaks. I'm NOT a big fan of it, and it looks like this.

Gotta say man, I gave the 2010s a chance, I really did. But the decade has just disappointed me  :-[. That being said I don't want previous eras to comeback per say. I just hope to enjoy the future eras more. The way I see it, this current wave just isn't my style, but I still want to see how things change in the future. Perhaps I'll like the fashion and music of 2018-2022 more. Heck maybe I'll also like 2023-2026, despite entering my 30s during that period.

As for skinny jeans vs baggy jeans, I'm not really into either. However, I think it's all subjective.

Technically there is a pop-punk revival but it's not nearly as popular as the pop-punk from the late 90s and early 00s. Heck rock in general still exists in the underground. I've found a few bands that are pretty good  :)

It lingered into 2011 and 2012, especially in the gay community where Justin Bieber wasn't hated or stigmatized as much as he was with straight guys.  Most guys I knew cut their hair during the second half of 2009 though.

Hmm, don't know about that gold tips stuff, but I actually like 2010s black hairstyles. Undercuts and side-fringes look really good on black dudes  :o like this guy's

There's two genres, "pop punk revival", and regular pop punk. I'm not a huge fan of the former, its delivery sounds flat. And if we're being real, I think I'm kind of too old for that "adult that doesn't want to grow up" shtick that pop-punk tries to go for. It's best pop-punk stays within its era, I literally can't enjoy pop-punk from 2016 exactly because it's made in 2016. At least pop-punk from the early 2000s I can judge it retrospectively, but it's not like Simple Plan's "I'm just a kid" resonates with me in the present :P

I agree. Pop Punk Revival doesn't actually even exist because 2005 Fall Out Boy sounds never died in the first place.

Real Pop Punk = roughly started from 1979-1984 but kicks off at 1985 and ends at 2003
Faux-Emo Pop (encompasses Neo-Pop Punk, Neon Pop Punk, Revival, etc. because they're all the same sh!t) = starts at 2003 but kicks off at 2004-present.

Huh. I remember that haircut being real popular into 2011 at the latest and 2012 being that time when the style was changing. I guess it's a lot different in other places.

Let's compare...

Zac Afron in early 2009 (or sometime around that era. I dunno what year this photo is):

A lot of people don't consider 2004/05 to be pop-punk revival years, because pop-punk bands like Sum 41, Green Day, Simple Plan etc. still released albums those years. While the style definitely did change, that's exactly why it isn't "revival": revival tries to bring back the early 2000s sound, those established bands were trying to move pop-punk in another direction.

So we've established slutty v-neck era is Late 2009 - 2012 and not 2007/08. :P V-necks can't look slutty with long hair anyway. The whole point is to make your neck look longer than it is. Long hair makes it look short again. Ruins the whole point 8-P

2007/08 is trashy v-neck era, 2009-2012 is high-class slutty (complete with the moisturizer) ;D

Yeah, but it's the exact same thing. Revival bands sound more like Fall Out Boy in 2005 (8-P) than they do Sum 41 in 2001. Pop Punk was totally done by the end of 2003 if you ask me. I remember when blink's self-titled came out. Ooooohhh booooyy. At first, I thought "ehh, it's got three good songs. Disappointment but whatever. Could be worse" and then all these bands follow in the same footsteps and then.... American Idiot! I have never lost faith in a band so quickly. And then... Warped Tour 2005 happens! 8-P I dunno why I wasn't shaken up by Warped 2004 as I was 2005, though since 2004 had little (but maybe a bit more than 2005 did) to no skate/pop punk bands and way more crappy faux-Emo bands. The last really good years of Warped were definitely 2000-2002. It was amazing with all the real Skate and Pop Punk bands. Emo didn't mean bangs and dyed black hair and people advertised their angelfire and geocities pages, not MySpace! Pop Punk's still stuck in that same garbage era.

Ok, so Vicks Moisturizer Slutty V-Neck era is 2009-2012! Got it! But... What about All Time Low hair? Even that's not in!? :\'(

Wait, trashy V-Necks? Can I combine both and have Slutty and trashy V-Necks with some Vicks?

Do people consider Fall Out Boy's 2005 album to be pop-punk? I always knew it was emo, even when I listened to it the first time :o What do bands advertise now? Their Twitter? :P

No man! I started putting on moisturizer (and acne cream) in really early 2010 'cause my acne was getting really bad lol. That's the start of the moisturizer v-neck era ;D It doesn't go with long hair. 2007/08 is that All-Time Low stuff, v-necks with long hair. They aren't getting any ladies with that. 8-P

But it's not even Emo! Real Emo is stuff like Rites of Spring, Embrace, Jawbreaker, Taking Back Sunday, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World and other stuff from the 80's to 2003! But yes, they do... To me, it's what happens when a couple of kids who know how to play guitar are really big into Grease, right? They are the types who love reading Edgar Allen Poe, looking at Andy Warhol's art and preforming in productions like Dirty Dancing. After school, they start bands and sure, they play Power Chords but the approach is based off of theater musicals and play productions rather than The Ramones, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, American Pie, Skateboarding and raw energy like it was in the 80's up to 2003. Yeah, Twitter/Facebook and all that crap.

They aren't!? I thought chicks dig All Time Low? See? I was all ready too. We the Kings, Every Avenue, Cute Is What We Aim For all those bands on my iPod (these are you kinda bands, right? :P) and now I don't know anymore. :\'(

But when people think emo, no one thinks of those bands :P It's always Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco ;D

I don't know what chicks dig anymore man. Who the hell is buying those Justin Bieber albums ;D And I listened to mostly dance-pop music by 2009-10 school year. It was my senior year and I was doing prom and other dances. Had to get with the beat 8) Most certainly not All Time Low 8-P I do like We The Kings though ;D

Gross... See? Before 2004, they usually thought of Jimmy Eat World, the Get Up Kids and Dashboard Confessional. The triforce of the Early 00's emo or something. Sometimes they think of Taking Back Sunday or maybe The Used (who have never really been Emo. They're completely late 90's/early 00's sounding but Post-Hardcore sounding with small hints of Emo) in today's world but usually for their post-2003 stuff and not for their good debut albums.

I dunno, either. When I was a teen, chicks dug Green Day and the Offspring and life was good. Actually, I still got sandwiches thrown at me, even then. Oh well. Are young kids buying those? There's no way the teens of 2009 are buying 'em... Right? ??? They'd be too old.... I don't understand you later millennials...

At least you don't like All Time Low but... We The Kings!??!?! Oh, god they're awful! Do you like Mayday Parade, too? What about Cute Is What We Aim For? 8-P

Yeah, I tried, but I realized it's best to be honest with yourself when it comes to musical taste. I am open to what's to come in the future. In fact, the new singles released by The 1975, actually sound pretty good. It's very different from their old stuff, and certainly different from what's been playing on the radio for the past few years.

No way man. Skinny jeans 4 life  :P The fashion industry is trying so hard to kill it off, but people are clinging onto them for dear life.

Again, that opinion is technically subjective. Skinny jeans probably suit you better, but it doesn't mean they are for everybody. I'm pretty skinny myself, and I really don't like skinny jeans. I prefer regular, straight leg, or maybe even fitted, but not skinny. Anyway, fashion will inevitably change as time goes on. Even if skinny jeans are no longer the mainstream style, they will definitely still have it as an option for people who prefer it.

There's two genres, "pop punk revival", and regular pop punk. I'm not a huge fan of the former, its delivery sounds flat. I agree with you on modern pop punk. I'm not a huge fan of the newer pop punk bands at the moment.

As for the bands I discovered, there's Airbourne, whom have been around since 2003, but only started releasing full length albums around 2007. However, they are a signed band, so I guess they aren't technically "underground", but you probably won't be hearing them on top 40 radio. There's also Heaven's Basement. They formed in 2008, so they have only been around for less than a decade. There's also bands like Darlia and JAWS, both of whom sound pretty cool. I could name more but I'm too lazy  ;D

You can be signed and still be underground. It depends what label they're on.

Fall Out Boy and Panic! aren't gross >:( I've only heard of Jimmy Eat World out of those though. I doubt the others can top Sugar We're Goin' Down :P :P :P :P I'll definitely give them a listen after I'm doing listening to the other million albums you recommended :o

Someone had to be buying it though right?? Bieber's main demographic has always been teens. But most people in my class were 16/17 and Bieber was like 14/15 when he debuted, so idk. Isn't that pedophillia? ;D

I've never heard of those dudes, except Mayday Parade sounds vaguely familiar. I've probably forgotten about them. After 2008, if a rock song isn't Top 100 or from Ontario, I probably haven't heard of it. :P

They totally are! 8-P 8-P I put Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional and The Get Up Kids on that list there but I don't think I put The Used (did I? I am not sure). Just listen to their first album from 2002, their only good one.

Ya' callin' me a liar, son? No way! I started High School in 1996 and all the girls loved Green Day and The Offspring. It's the little kids in grade school who went gaga over NSYNC and Backstreet Boys! Even when my sister was in High School from 1999-2003, it was all about your blinks n Sums. It was the worst, though. You're lucky because you don't have to keep your little sisters away from evil Nu Metal boys (well, it was just one boy) like I did in the early 00's. Worse when they're playing awful Crazy Town CD's to impress the boys they like.... 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P 8-P Is it? I dunno but you kids these days, I just don't understand. Back in my day, we walked through 20 feet snow and we liked it.

So... You like Hedley or some crap then? They're from Ontario.

Don't forget Boys Like Girls  ;D

Oh yes!!! How could I forget! And The Academy Is..., The Friday Night Boys, Hey Monday, etc., etc.

The comparison of 2000-2003 Drive Thru to 2004-now Fueled By Ramen just shows how society went downhill in 2004.

They totally are! 8-P 8-P I put Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional and The Get Up Kids on that list there but I don't think I put The Used (did I? I am not sure). Just listen to their first album from 2002, their only good one.

Haha, I was just kidding about the skinny jeans. But skinny jeans have very strong staying power. They tried to bring in "boyfriend jeans" for women in 2015 (basically boyfriend sized jeans for women) but that went down in flames. Skinnies are back in for 2016.  :D I can't see the 2020s going back to anything remotely baggy, maybe slim-fit. But I should know better than to make predictions about the future >_<  ;D

The 1975 - UGH! is that the song you're talking about? Damn, sounds pretty good. Kind of reminds me of USS' Freakquency, but this song is pretty unique. I can totally dig this!

Just like with NSYNC and the Backstreet Brothers. That stuff was for the Disney channel and you'd get laughed at for liking kids stuff. The taste of women went downhill fast or society in general. Do you want me to do one of those classic "before 2003" and "after 2003" posts because I can to show how society has gone to the dogs. The Jonas Brothers are probably the worst thing I've ever heard. Wait, you were born 1993 so middle school would of been... 2004-2007, right? People, other than me, listened to their Sums n blinks after 2003 or do you mean they liked Chuck and Untitled? Those albums aren't bad but they're not great either. They released their greatest hits before breaking up which featured two singles, the biggest one being Not Now which sounds like standard 2005 Emo Pop despite being from late 2003. Really? I thought you would of loved all those bands! How do I know more about this stuff than do you? This is your prime High School years, man.

I was in middle school from 2003-06. In 2004 I remember chicks playing and singing along to All The Small Things on the school computers. Yeah, for Sum 41 they liked Chuck, like me ;D Their Pieces song made them borderline boyband status.

I wasn't listening to these strange borderline boybands lol  :o In 2003/04 I listened to pop-punk, in 2004-2006/7 I listened to emo (although I'd deny it if you asked me), R&B and the general pop music of the time. Then when Finland won Eurivision in late 2006 I got into Scandinavian metal (especially some Norwegian black metal) and French metal as well, and I discovered Japanese Rock on YouTube about the same time, I didn't listen to much English music then. Then in 2008/09 English music brought me back with those crazy electropop dance hits  :D Yeah, my music trajectory is very strange haha.

LOL my parents can't even get away with saying stuff like that. They had nothing like the Christmas 2013 ice storm, or February 2015 which was the coldest month on record in Toronto. I'm armed with the facts!

I hated NSync and the Backstreet Boys when they were popular.  It isn't that I didn't like the music, it was the no self-respecting dude would admit to liking them.  Nowadays I listen to them for the nostalgia as do many other people my age, who also probably would have never admitted to listening to them in 2000.

The Jonas Brothers and One Direction are today's equivalent.

I don't even remember any chicks my age admitting to liking them, either. Maybe the occasional few but I remember it mostly being dismissed as a "middle school thing". Definitely not any dudes would admit to liking that stuff at all. They were more into the classical compositions of Durst and Davis. I can look back at the Boybands, Nu Metal and Post-Grunge (or even actual Grunge) of the day and remember the vibe of the era and feel nostalgic but I still don't like it. I like it more than anything post-2003 but that's about it. It's the Pop Punk and Emo from the mid 90's to early 00's that I still love to this day.

Jonas Brothers are today's equivalent? I know One Direction is still big but I thought those Jonas Dudes went out in 2011?

Jonas Brothers, Big Time Rush, or Naked Brothers Band are groups that targeted preteens.

NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, or One Direction are groups that target(ed) core teenagers.

That's the difference, and unfortunately, people who have older brothers or sisters who ate up these bands get nostalgic for them too.

Nick Jonas is still popular and he pretty much IS the Jonas Brothers.  It's like in Justin Timberlake's early solo days.  Listening to him was as bad as listening to NSync.  Later on he became a lot more cool, but back in the "Rock Your Body" days, you might as well say you like "Bye Bye Bye" by NSync.

This is 100% true. His first solo album was still seen as cheesy and as teeny as anything NSYNC ever did. Something for the playground. Basically "NSYNC" without the "SYNC". Literally.

I don't remember much teens listening to NSYNC and the Backstreets, though. From what I remember people wanted to be more mature and edgy so they liked all that Nu Metal and Gothic stuff. The cheesiest people got to was Pop Punk like your classic blinks n Sums.

No guy over age 12 listened to them.  During that era, guys listened to pop punk or Eminem. Teenage girls liked them though.

I dunno about you and your experience but I don't remember too many teenage girls over 13 listening to them. Those bands were seen as Disney Channel bands where I come from. What I do remember is a lot of Eminem and Pop Punk (the good stuff. GC, blink and Sum and MxPx rocking all rooms) and also a bunch of Nu Metal and Marilyn Manson. Yes, even the girls. There was also a lot of that Wigger Hip Hop and RnB stuff, too. If there's one singer I remember girls going crazy over, it's Ricky Martin. Enrique Iglesias was pretty popular then, too.

Haha, yeah sorry, I can usually tell when someone is joking  :-\\. As for skinny jeans being back for 2016, I didn't know they ever left. Even when they tried to bring in boyfriend jeans in 2015, skinny jeans were still very popular. As for the 2020s, who knows? Anything is possible. At the very least, I see a strong backlash to the 2010s (in that regard 2021 could be like 1981 or 1991). At the end of the day I guess it doesn't matter, as long as people are being true to themselves.

Yep, that's the song, and there's also "Love Me". I looked up USS' "Freakquency", though I can't really hear any similarities to The 1975's "UGH!". I don't know  :P

I know some Jonas Brothers fanboys and fangirls, and they seem to treat Jonas Brothers like it was the distant past. They're nostalgic for them. Last I heard from them was early 2009.

Oooorrrrr 2021 could be like 2001  ;D There could be a 2010s backlash right in the middle though, like how there was essentially a 2000s backlash in late 2008. Who knows.

Haha, I heard the poppy-beats and it reminded me of it ;D

So, you just walked it?

Yeah, was about to fall down like a hundred times too! But I'm pro so I never actually fell down. The worst part was when there were trees that fell down and blocked the sidewalk! I had to either duck under them or walk around them (extra dangerous!). It's usually a 15 minute walk but it took me an hour that day. I had to take one step at a time. The next bus wouldn't come for two hours. I should have called a taxi but I'm like "naw, I got this!"  ;D

The only 2000s backlash there was in the 2008 was a backlash against George W. Bush.

While things have certainly changed since the '00s, I don't think there has been a real backlash against them they way the '80s backlashed against the '70s or the '60s backlashed against the '50s.

No way. Limp Bizkit is the start of society's moral decline. If it wasn't for Limp Bizkit then everyone would know you can't get away with selling horrible music :P

I think it was Windows 98? I can't remember. Not dial-up though, it was at school haha. Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco can't be boybands, except maybe the latter. I think most their fans are male.

Hmm.... You may have a point there...

It's still pretty  weird to think about kids in 2004 still listening to All the Small Things! Male? You mean males who sit on MySpace and write bad poetry? I can buy that one.

Depends on what part of the '90s.  There was never a backlash to post-1993 culture.  1990-1992 is arguable as there was an '80s backlash in the '90s and 1990-1992 is sometimes lumped in with the '80s.

There was definitely a 90s backlash in the early 2000s. People were excited the new millennium started and didn't like the 90s. They hated the boy bands and bubbleum pop from the late 90s the most though. Then after a couple of years through the 00's people started loving the 90s.

Hmm, I don't recall that being the case. When I think backlash I think people looking back at the previous decade and cringing or wanting nothing to do with it. This wasn't really the case going from the 90 to the early 2000s. I remember well into the 2000s people having trouble trying to differentiate the 90s and the 2000s in terms of fashion, music etc.

That's easy to say in 2016. It wasn't too easy to say in 2006, when everyone was still wearing baggy jeans and listening to rap and rock.

You can actually look at old threads on here from 2006 and see people saying that the 90s and 2000s aren't all that different. It makes sense. In 2006, when you compare the differences between the 60s and 70s, and 70s and 80s, 80s and 90s, and then finally 90s and 2000s; the difference between the 90s and 2000s feels non-existent in comparison to the changes that occured in the previous decades.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. People saying that fashion, slang, music etc all were similar. The changes were very gradual so to everyone the changes weren't very noticeable. In 2016 we can look back and analyze everything, but back then no one could really tell the difference.

By the end of the '10s and the start of the '20s the entire 2000s would be what everyone is nostalgic for. As of 2016 I'm mostly seeing 2000-2005/6 nostalgia. While back in 2012 I didn't see any nostalgia for anything past 2002.

I'm pretty much happy that I'm seeing the mid 2000s being nostalgic now. I would be okay with the late 2000s not being old now, but I think I'll love reminiscing about the mid '00s (most of the time) for now.

As I mentioned before people tend to hate things that seem "modern-ish". For some strange reason EVERYONE seems to love whatever is "old". Something could be released to today and people would hate it. But by the 2020s people would love it for some inexplicable reason. Been this way since the beginning of time and I'll never understand that mentality. "I hate the things in modern day" is something people have been saying for decades (or centuries) now, but when that "modern thing" is no longer modern well then you'll start seeing nostalgia threads, nostalgic  youtube videos, nostalgia web articles etc of people being nostalgic for that "use-to-be-modern-but-now-old thing." You'll see youtube comments like "Man, I used to love ." when that same person was probably complaining about it 8-10 years ago. But enough of that little rant.

The late '00s as of 2016 to me is looking pretty old. Maybe not 2009, but 2007 and some of 2008. Nostalgia for the mid '00s is around. For me things were pretty different 10+ years ago. While I'm fine with life in the mid '10s it does make me surprised on how different things were for me back in 2006. Take 2006 for example. Now compare your experiences in that year to 2016 and you'll see the obvious differences. I'm even seeing a small bit of 2007 nostalgia funny enough. Nostalgia comes faster than I thought it would.

2009 had great music and movies but that's about it. I definitely don't get nostalgic for that year either because the economy was in bad shape just months after the stock market crash, middle school life was still tough for me as it usually was, and there were a lot of big deaths that year like Michael Jackson. However, that Summer 2009 was epic for me, because of the party I went to at my cousins' roundabout neighborhood since they were moving out of state, which had tons of family and neighbors. At the party I made some friends and I had a huge crush on this girl who was over there and I had a great time with her. Unfortunately, it was the only time I saw them and haven't seen them ever since. :\'( Then I went to St. Simons Island for the first time for an entire week which was epic. I wouldn't say that summer was the best like 2006 or 2011, but it's right behind those though.

I'm nostalgic for 2009-10 school year so bad. I was friends with everybody at school and all the girls wanted to rub my shiny moisturized chest  :\'( The EDM music was also crazy fun.

University has been more fun for the most part though. But it's still ongoing so it's hard to be nostalgic. I imagine I'll be instantly nostalgic once I'm back at work though  ;D A lot of my friends who've already graduated are.

I'm undeniably nostalgic for 2010-2011 and 2012 to an extend. Early Miguel, Drake, Big Sean and Nicki Minaj were fun to listen to. Beats by Dr. Dre were exciting. Cartoon Network was supposedly revived. Victorious was still airing, which I actually enjoyed. Saints Row 3 was one of the games you needed to have. YouTube was in its finale and the time actually had a specific feel. The early 2010s were pretty decent as I look back.

Drake has always been good for me. His rap songs are enjoyable but he makes it really fun and entertaining at the same time. Sometimes you'll LMAO so hard in the middle of his lyrics, and a lot of his beats or instrumentals can get stuck in your head too. You can't say the same for many other hip hop artists out there.

Yeah, my uncle is Canadian so I've been to Canada quite a few times and let me say, Canada's culture is like exactly like an episode of Bob and Doug. America is like an episode of Family Guy.

Northeast America is like an episode of Family Guy. For Southwest America, it's like an episode of King of the Hill, but it depends on the conservative/liberal towns they live in.

Haha, that is so true. Get Bill and Ted mixed with some Beavis and Butthead, add a lil' Jeff Spicoli and you've got California.

The farther we get from 2008 the less that seems true in my opinion.  With the exception of Obama being elected and 'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga at the top of the charts, there really isn't much that's '10s about 2008.  The '10s began in the fall of 2009 at the earliest.  That's when I first started hearing about hipsters and when electropop took over completely.  Even then, the smartphone/tablet revolution didn't begin until 2010.

Ironic thing is though Lady Gaga's debut is often thought of as the moment the '10s began on this board, the electropop era has been over now for longer than it actually lasted.  I am actually starting to think of electropop as more of a late '00s holdover the longer time goes on, being that it was already over around 2012.

Well, the Great Recession kicked into full gear during late 2008, and by the time of Obama's inauguration, everyday life had been dramatically affected for hundreds of millions across the globe. Additionally, Facebook surpassed MySpace in popularity around the end of 2008, not to mention HDTV became standard by 2009. Snap music, despite its strength in early 2008 with "Low," was dead once 2009 started, even though some urban songs, like "Dead and Gone" and "Blame It (On the Alcohol)" still sounded late 2000s. iPhones, though still far from standard, were just starting to become a common sight by the start of 2009. Proposition 8 passing in California brought the gay marriage question to a whole new level of significance, particularly because gay marriage had been legal for a few months before people voted to take that right away, and in a state usually categorized as a hotbed of American progressivism. Finally, not only did Barack Obama become President of the United States, the Republican Party almost immediately re-coalesced into the Tea Party after Rick Santelli (not to be confused with Rick Santorum) made a rant on CNBC in February 2009.

To be fair, there were still enough 2000s influences lingering on throughout 2009 and the beginning of 2010 that I can go along with the idea that the 2010s, like the 1920s, began on time. However, even with emo, post-grunge, Blackberry phones, Wii, Hannah Montana, MySpace, and The Office hanging on throughout that year, all of the shifts that occurred throughout the course of the 2008-2009 school year were seismic enough that I think 2009 felt much closer to the early 2010s than the rest of the late 2000s regardless.

I really don't see electropop as a late 2000s holdover because it's far more similar to the EDM of today than more urban-oriented music from the late 2000s like "4 Minutes," "Low," and "Fergalicious." That would be like saying Nirvana was an 80s holdover because they released their first album in 1989, their second during a time that still had a lot of late 80s influences, and because they disbanded before the chronological 90s were even halfway over.

Hipsters have been around for a long time. I remember back in 2005 Emo/Scene kids and Hipster were pretty much synonymous with each other. The only difference was the hipster was seen more as someone who was hip and college aged rather than a whiny teenager but the foundations between the two (fashion and music taste) were basically the same. Here's some 2005 issues from a web comic I used to read:

"Kill the Hipsters"

"Androgyny and Me"
https://web.archive.org/web/20120319112806im_/http://www.mitchclem.com/nothingnice/comics/20050418.gif

This continued on throughout the late 00's but it became a lot more neon and party oriented. I think the transition to what being a hipster means today started with Juno with the whole vintage T and indie rock thing. Here's a photo from 2008 that shows the transition between the 00's hipster and the 10's hipster:

Yeeepppp. Hipsters/faux-Emo kids were probably one of the most hated things back then. I hated it because I was the only listening to real Emo from 1995-2003 before the faux-Emo kids took over and ruined everything. One thing that hasn't changed since 2005 is that hipsters think they're "hip" and "underground" while listening to stuff that's actually pretty mainstream (in 2005, that was My Chemical Romance; today that's... I dunno... Those Imagine Dragon guys maybe).

There is still some electro pop that is popular today on the radio. So it didn't go completely in 2012. Lady Gaga, Electropop, Obama, are all 10's things to me. The early 2010's play a bigger role in the 2010's decade than they do in the 2000s decade.

Yep, 2008 is clearly still late 2000s, especially the first half, though even the second half hardly had that early 2010s atmosphere to it, as Obama was not yet in office, Lady Gaga hadn't fully blown up yet, people hadn't yet gotten their iPhone 2's for Christmas and Hanukah, and the effects of the Great Recession still weren't quite fully set into place.

Frankly, if you're coming from a British perspective, there's even more reason to pinpoint 2010 as the start of the cultural 2010s because on top of Gordon Brown still being the Prime Minister through all of 2009, before David Cameron returned the Conservative Party to power for the first time since 1997, the Lady Gaga wave of electropop was not that distinguishable from the electronic dance music that had been successful there throughout the 2000s but not in the United States. Here's a slice of just some of what was popular in Great Britain during the mid-late 2000s in place of most of the awful snap songs in America:

But electropop started before Lady Gaga. She just made it super mainstream. Katy Perry was popular in summer of 08' and a couple of other hip-hop songs were electronic like "Low". Therre were some other electro pop songs too. 2008 was a transitional year. The second half felt different than the first half. The change that occurred in 2011 was not as big as the one in 2008. Although I do agree there was a change in 2011, it wasn't as apparent as 2008. Music in 09' and 11' sound pretty much identical.

"I Kissed a Girl" isn't really electropop, it's not quite synthy enough. It's just a late 2000s pop song with a swig beat, similar to "The Sweet Escape." "Hot n Cold" just about qualifies as electropop, but its instrumentation and feel are still pretty 2000s and don't sound identical to electronic dance from 2009 to 2012, even Perry's own Teenage Dream album.

"Low" is electropop? Just because it has an upbeat tempo doesn't make it electropop. It's basically typical late 2000s snap music, along the lines of "Bartender," "Lollipop," and Ciara's "Get Up."

Those were bad examples but there's Hot n' Cold, Forever by Chris Brown, Love in this Club Usher, and I do consider Lollipop electro. All of these songs came out in 2008.
Funny, I remember not a long time ago almost everyone on the forum agreed late 2008 is when a big shift happened. Now everyone's saying 2009. XD

I already mentioned how I think "Hot n' Cold" sounds more late 2000s despite technically being dance/electro. Like "Low," "Lollipop" is just straightforward late 2000s snap, simply having a few light synthesizers does NOT make it electropop in the Lady Gaga/Ke$ha sense. And how are "Forever" and "Love in This Club" early 2010s-style electropop? "Forever" is quintessential late 2000s urban, with an upbeat tempo but also a strong focus on percussion instead of fleshy synthesizers, making it essentially in the same vein as Loose/FutureSex/LoveSounds/Shock Value-era Timbaland. "Love in This Club" is also typical late 2000s, a lot closer to T-Pain than true electropop. In fact, both Chris Brown and Usher began recording straight-up electropop in 2010, so the contrast is even more obvious. Does "Love in This Club" really sound like "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" and is "Forever" seriously the same type of music as "Yeah 3X?" If all of those songs you mentioned are early 2010s-style, then I guess these all must be as well:

There's actually a remake of "Forever" that came out in spring 2009, which basically showcases what the song's production would've been closer to had it come out a year later:

Sometime between the market crash of 2008 and the Iraq War being declared over in late 2011.
The '10s arrived pretty much right on time.

XD

All of those songs sound more '00s than '10s.

It's a lot easier to judge cultural trends in hindsight than it is when they are happening.  There WAS change happening in 2008, but a lot of people tend to overstate the year's association to the cultural '10s and understate its association with the '00s.  Most cultural trends in '08 were more like '05 than '11.  Another than is that from the perspective of 2016, we now see how much a blip the Lady Gaga era was in the overall evolution of pop culture.  The decade has not been defined by what was happening in 2009 and 2010 like many thought it would be.

Late 2009 was much more culturally aligned with the '10s than '08 was.  By late 2009, you had Lady Gaga at her peak, Ke$ha, the new Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, hipsters, Obama was actually in office, etc.

I would say half and half.

Poker Face was everywhere in early 2009, but so was "Dead and Gone" by T.I. and "Love Lockdown" by Kanye West, both of which are late '00s sounding songs.

Obama was in, but so was scene and emo.  The first half of 2009 was definitely a hybrid.  The second half of 2008 leaned more towards the '00s and the second half of 2009 leaned more towards the '10s.

Yeah since 2009-10, it feels like we've been in one BIG era since. There was some cultural changes in 2011 and 2013, but they weren't MAJOR changes. Fall 2008-early 2009 was the biggest transitional period/change in culutre; the likes of which I HAD NEVER SEEN, and I haven't seen anything like it since.

First half leaned a little more late 00s, but the fall.... definitely early 10s.
Just like how 2013 was a half early and a half mid 10s year. ;)

Exactly. I think the 08-09 school year brought a proper end to the 00s. This I guess was the my "peak "of childhood. Since 2nd grade is the middle of elementary school. Even though I consider 2008 to be the peak childhood year for anyone born in late 2000.

Agreed bro! 7/8 is usually the peak of someone's childhood. Since I was born in October of 95, 2003 is ''my'' quintessential childhood year.
Also...It feels weird talking to a 2000 born tbh! ;D ;)

I stand by my statement that the 00s ended in 2011. Osama bin Laden, a defining figure of the post-9/11 era who seemed almost inestimable and uncatchable, was finally killed on a day that felt almost surreal and dreamlike. The final Harry Potter movie was released in theaters, ending a very 00s-defining franchise. iPads and iPhones began to gain popularity. Social media took a step up in ubiquity. etc. etc.

If people can say the 90s ended in 2001, then I say the 00s just as well ended in 2011.

2008-2009 was indeed changeful. However, 2010-2011 still felt like "late 00s" years to me, at least culture-wise. This is how it goes, to me:

2000-2003 - the "x-treme" 00s
2004-2007 - the core, definitive, emo flip phone snap rap Bush-bashing "wussy" 00s (as Jordan calls them ;D)
2008-2011 - the "late 00s", the electropop, rise of social media, rise of Obama 00s

I think the 90's began in 1993 with Beavis and Butthead but even then the change still wasn't at the snap of a finger. It was pretty gradual until 1994 when big hair/hair metal finally went away and Dookie and Smash came out. 1994 is probably the truest 90's year ever and I think it's my favorite year of the decade. The only thing that sucks about it was Kurt's death, he would of made 1994 even better.

2004-mid 2006- being the mid 00s
Late 2006-2008- being the late 2000s

Late 2008-2009- VERY late 2000s; Obama, beginning of electropo, Facebook, twitter,

oops I forgot 97. Yeah 1993-1997 were the heart of that decade.

I agree!

1996 and 1997 were alright. They were core '90s years, but not as definitive as '93-'95.

I agree with this, too. 1995-1997 have the 90's atmosphere and you can learn about the era by going to these years but they didn't have huge culturally defining trends like 1993 and 1994 did.

Okay, maybe 1996 was definitive as '93-'95. I could change my mind about this. For example, the SNES and Genesis were still making games at the time. Especially when the N64 and Saturn wasn't that popular until the late 90s.

You know what? I think I'm gonna agree with this one. It makes sense, because 1998 was the start of the Y2K era. A lot of people have been saying that a dozen times, but it's still relevant to this topic.

Crash Bandicoot was supposed to be the next Mario (Nintendo) or Sonic (Sega) for the Playstation, but we all know how that turned out. Once the XBOX came out the industry started changing.

Even though Crash had its stay during the late 90s, it was beaten by Mario.

I think the biggest two reasons for 1996 not being the definitive year of the 90s is that Sega and grunge, while still known and popular at the time, had drastically declined in popularity since 1991-1995. Additionally, the Internet and fifth generation of gaming were paving the way for what society would become by the early 2000s. The movies of 1996 were also not as plentiful or memorable as 1994 or 1995, even though Space Jam and Independence Day are pretty iconic to the decade's culture.

Well.... I think 96 was the definitive year besides 95 because Jordan's bulls were at their peak that year. Also in 1996 it was basically a 4th and 5th gen gaming year. 1996 election. 1996 Olympics. 2pac was in his prime. Brett Favre had his best season in the 90s that year. The 90s wrestling boom began this year as well; pro Wrestling had entered it's second golden period thanks to Hulk Hogan's heel turn and Austin 3:16 starting. All the 90s sports dynasties won their gold; Bulls, Yankees, and Cowboys. It was basically a mixture of a whole bunch of things.... old and new  ;)  It may have not been as good for movies as 94 or 95; but... so what! and the Genesis is more of an early 90s thing;well to me it is... when I think of the heart of the 90s; I think of SNES and even the PS1 to a certain degree.

I dunno, man. The real 00's was a pretty wussed out era. If you look at bands like Finch or Sum 41, for example, they look like tough guys that you don't wanna f*ck with. They got mean Nu Metal "you ready f*ckers!?" faces on and everything. If you look at 2004 faux-Emo they all look like little sissy girls. Today is more of the same wussy attitudes, if you ask me. Skateboarding today is a disgrace, too.

Maybe cause I was still a kid then; but the core 2000s seemed more badass than today... by a LONG shot! Especially the black culutre. When you said black culture I thought you were talking about the faux-Emo stuff but then you clarified yourself. ;D I guess but the stuff I liked back then like Pop Punk was something for everyone to enjoy black or white. Haha, nah. I know today is different from the real 2000's but the wussiness hasn't gone away since. :P

My Bulls have never played in the NBA but their best record was definitely not in 1996. I've been told that I am the best player/coach/manager, though. Some call me the GOAT.

That's not the only way. The decade (and all others) can also be divided into halves and even quarters.

I also want to know what do you mean by a wussed out era? I'm sure there plenty of fights throughout school during the time period as I (and others) witnessed them occurring which means there were plenty of tough guys. Besides, not every white guy dressed emo or listened to the music. I recall seeing them still wearing early 00s fashion and listening to other song genres and this is coming from someone who attended predominantly white schools.

If you wanted to know, I even listened to the core 00s music sometime ago and most of the songs were still awesome except snap/crunk rap and emo rock. :D ;D

I agree. The black culture was definitely badass during that era! There were many R&B songs from that time period that are now classics. As for hip-hop, despite the southern sub-genre being wildly popular during the core 00s, there were also lots of non-southern rap that were great that I can listen to over and over again.  :D

Yeah, but it's the best way! ;)

I dunno, man. When I think of a real 2000's school fight, I think of a bunch of nerds slapping each other over who's longboard is cooler or some crap. It's not like in the early 2000's when people actually skateboarded. Yeah, but almost all of them had that stupid wings haircut emo or not. The early 00's styles and clothing (Dickies, Hurley, Hilfiger, Atticus, Level 27) were pretty much done. Maybe they sometimes "spiked" their hair and wore jeans and a t-shirt but that's probably it for the early 00's fashion. Rock music was basically two things in the real 2000's: faux-Emo and Post-Post Grunge and they both intersected waaayyy too much.

I tried to listen to real 00's music and some of the underground stuff is pretty good up the majority of it (underground and mainstream) was crap and made me wanna go back to 1995 to listen to some No Use or Strung Out.

My peak childhood!  :D

and yeah, I'm with you, Eric, and UltraGameDog. Y'all explained my thoughts. The African American culture throughout the core 2000's was epic. The artists, music and the fashion. 50 cent in his prime was really fun and not to mention the kid and family sitcoms (we know what those were!) that had that African American culture at the time too. I really miss it. I remember a lot of it thanks to my parents or older cousins. I wish I didn't take all of it for granted because at the same time I was still mostly into all of the kid culture stuff at the time.

I'm not aware of or into sports too much, though I can see how it factors in. 1994 was a pretty underwhelming year for pro athletics, not just because of Michael Jordan being on hiatus, but also the MLB strike. If you're a huge sports fan, then I can definitely see how that would disqualify that year from being definitive.

However, it was also the peak of grunge, with Kurt Cobain still being alive during the first few months, Soundgarden releasing Superunknown, Stone Temple Pilots coming out with Purple, Pearl Jam still enjoying success with Vs. and eventually Vitalogy, and even the MTV Unplugged: Nirvana album garnering huge success. Gangsta rap also basically peaked that year, with Snoop Doggy Dogg, Warren G, Da Brat, Ice Cube, Outkast, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and Coolio coming out with definitive material; 1996 had 2Pac's "All Eyez on Me," but was otherwise the beginning of gangsta rap's decline to second fiddle status, especially during the last third of the year.

How can you just say "so what?" to 1996 being less memorable in film than 1994 and 1995? Are you just not an avid cinema follower in the same way I don't know that much about sports culture over the years? A good amount of movies from both of those years transcended the cinema and were popular in their own right. All three of Jim Carrey's most popular comedies (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber) came out in 1994, and they all reeked of 90s culture. The Lion King was also released in 1994, spawning several spin-off products, as well as being the highest-grossing 2D animated film of all time. 1994 also had friggin' Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, and Pulp Fiction, three movies which any conversation about the 90s should not omit. 1995 had the only good Pierce Brosnan James Bond movie, Clueless, and more films in IMDB's top 250 than any other year in history. That's got to count for something. Even Batman Forever, in spite of its marginal reviews, still had a very popular soundtrack, which featured U2's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" and Seal's "Kiss from a Rose."

How is the Sega Genesis so insignificant to 90s culture? It may have only peaked in the early 90s, but it embodied pretty much everything the 90s were about. It had attitude, a stylish design, and a certain blue mascot who took gaming to a whole new XTREME! It was also really the first console since the Video Game Crash of 1983 that attracted a more mature audience, before even the Playstation came along. Even in spite of Sega's numerous marketing blunders in the mid-90s, the Genesis was still a lot of people's console of choice in 1994-1996, even if fewer people were actually buying the system anymore. The PS1, on the other hand, is really only definitive to the late 90s, with some of its popularity carrying into the first few years of the 2000s. It may have launched in 1995, but it didn't start to truly takeoff until Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider came out in late 1996, and its peak was strictly the regular late 90s. Even in 1994, you had a lot of significant 3D games already being released, whether they were on the 3DO (whose success in North America is comparable to the Saturn) or in the arcades, i.e. Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona USA, and Ridge Racer.

To me, 1994 and 1995 are essentially tied for quintessential year of the 90s. 1995 has less grunge and less Sega, but makes up for that with sports, Alanis Morissette, and the birth of the Internet. 1996 would be third, but it doesn't quite capture the essence of the nineties quite the same way that the two preceding years do.

Late 80s and late 90s teen pop is good, in my opinion! As for the late 60s, early 70s, late 2000s, and mid-2010s, however, I can understand. Still, the worst types of music have to be crunkcore, snap, death metal, and white nationalist rock!

Late 80s and late 90s teen pop is good, in my opinion! As for the late 60s, early 70s, late 2000s, and mid-2010s, however, I can understand. Still, the worst types of music have to be crunkcore, snap, death metal, and white nationalist rock!

Brokencyde are Crunkcore masters. When I think "real emo" Crunkcore comes to mind. ;D ;D ;D Death Metal ain't too bad, though.

Had to cram for them exams. I also had to write my thesis and job application and I kept getting distracted by this site, so I decided to go HAM for three weeks on those things. It was worth it, I got the job :D

Congratulations, dude! Now you'll have the money to buy all the Good Charlotte and Sum 41 CD's! ;)

Well... DAMN! >:( I am avid film watcher, but I am not going to let 1996 being a step down from 95 and 94 for movies; cloud my judgement. lol ;D

Also I do not think the Genesis was insignificant to 90s culutre... I just feel that the Genesis in the mid 90s wasn't the juggernaut it was in the early 90s. As you can already tell, I think the mid 90s-regular late 90s(late 1993-1997)were heart of the decade.and I think of the heart of the 90s culturally, SNES(post Donky Kong Country) is the first thing that comes to mind to me, followed by the EARLY days of the PS1.

By reading these quotes, I can kinda tell you lean more towards the earlier 90s years as more definitive, then more power to ya. ;) Interesting, I wonder how arcticfox would feel about these statements. ;D That Guy's a funny dude!!

Good. You must buy all the essentials! Don't buy Underclass Hero, though! It's awful. And are you talking about Makeshift Love? I think it sucks. It doesn't have the rad 1998 style of the self-titled and Young and Hopeless, man. It sounds like crappy All Time Low 2007 fake Pop Punk! So upset. After listening to it I binged the self-titled and Young and Hopeless back to back to wash out my ears.

I have no idea on what's going on here, but all my money is on the guy who wins. 8)

To speak on topic in terms of a cultural point I think the '00s ended sometime in 2010 or 2011. The 2010s is a distinct decade that feels consistent up to this point (2016). Sometime between 2010 or 2011 is when I think it started culturally. Although a lot of 2010's things can be traced back to 2009. But the 2010s is a decade that I'd say started culturally at around the same time it started numerically. When the next president comes around the consistent 2010's feel may begin to change up. We may be in an era that may not have the core 10's vibe anymore which pretty much will set things up for the Late 2010s and 2020s. But then again I don't know the future.

For me, things were close to pure early 10s by late 2009. In 21 Jump Street (2012 movie) they compare Class of 2005 to Class of 2010 and the difference was night and day. I thought it was so succinct and it was the first movie that I felt captured the 2010s high school experience perfectly. I was in high school in 2006 and 2010 so I feel I can compare them directly and it was very spot on haha.

2004-2007 was the era of flip phones, Hot Topic, emos, "gritty reboot" movies, and singers whining about their problems. By 2008-2011, emo was pretty much gone, and in its place came electropop (Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Justin Bieber, etc.) Even if you hate electropop, you have to admit, it's not as "wussy" as emo - the singers usually don't whine about their problems, but rather, focus on having a good time.

That's not how fights were. I can honestly tell you that the real 2000s were not wussy at all. The fights that took place were by tough guys. It wasn't at all nerdish until this decade. Furthermore, I do recall still seeing early 00s fashion when I in MS because it was still there. The spiky hair, baggy clothing, platform shoes and even possibly frosted tips. Yes, Emo had already took place, but those people were mostly in the minority.

Wouldn't Pop-Rock count as part of the genre? That was popular during that era and it was actually great.

But not all real 2000s music was fake-emo and post post grunge. What about Hip-hop, R&B and Techno?

I dunno, man, you had the weenie faux-Emo kids hanging around until last year and Justin Bieber is pretty wussy, too. We are in a skinny jeans era!

I dunno about Middle School fights but the real 2000's in general were super lame and wussy. Maybe you saw some early 00s fashion (and probably like I said before: "spiked" hair with a t-shirt and jeans but not essential brands like dickies/hurley/level 27/atticus/hilfiger and chain wallets, white kid dreads, ect.) but most kids I saw and even people around my age had the wings haircut and wore plain clothes. I didn't mean nerds as in dressing like nerds, I meant nerds as in dorks with wing haircuts who longboard. Emo was the biggest rock trend that appealed to the youth. If you weren't some wing haired flat hat-wearing dweeb who went around malls yelling "G-G-G-G-G UNIT!" you were probably into Emo. Boring times.

I guess? You mean like those Jonas Bro dudes? That wasn't very good.

That's why I said rock music. Concerning other genres: Hip Hip was already pretty bad by 1997 but it still had some cool albums here and there like Eminem's Shady LP to Eminem Show trilogy, The Swollen Members Balance to Bad Dreams and the Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty to 5 Boroughs whereas post-2003 it's all Crunk and Snap. Techno also lost the fun dancey vibe it had in 2000-2003 and I'm not big on RnB but the real 00's didn't have the same soulful sound as the early 00's which made it a lot worse.

But they weren't especially black culture. Honestly, the real wussy era is actually today because of SJWs and fake liberals. The real 2000s still had decency. As for the style, you're speaking of, I don't remember anyone having that winged-cut and wearing plain clothes at that time. The guys wore still some of the early 00s fashion (along with the core 00s) and they were't just Caucasian, but even Latino, Asian and Middle Eastern guys as well.

I actually have my 2004-05 yearbook and when I looked at it last year, I didn't see any guy with the wing-cut or them wearing any plain clothes.

No. I mean Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Fall Out Boy etc.

It wasn't all Crunk/snap. There were definitely rap of the non-southern sub-genre. R&B still had that soulful sound. Think Usher, Mariah Carey, Mario (the singer), Mary J. Blige, and Beyonce. As for techno, it was still decent. I heard it back then and it wasn't awful.

I guess Hip Hop was still macho but everything else wasn't and there were barely any choices to choose from in the first place when it comes to real 00's subcultures. Well, of course, I didn't say it was only white people. People of all different colors had the early 00s fashion.

They still dressed like the early 00's at your school then!? Dickies, Atticus, Hurley, Chain Wallets and all?? Well, I can understand 2004 because there were still some early 00s holdovers but 2005 I can't see that happening at all.

Fall Out Boy is faux-Emo. Avril's only good album was Let Go; Under My Skin is pretty much another faux-Emo Post-Post Grunge album like all the rest of 'em. Kelly Clarkson had that stupid Breakaway song in 2004 and it was annoying as hell.

Yeah, but it still wasn't any good. RnB still sounded more dancy than soulful then and techno definitely was extremely boring post-2003.

By reading these quotes, I can kinda tell you lean more towards the earlier 90s years as more definitive, then more power to ya. ;)

I see Nirvana, Sega, gangsta rap, and late Generation X as having defined the 90s and the 90s alone. There's a lot to say about late 1996 to 1999 as well, but I see most of the introductions from that period as having set up the 2000s, mostly the early 2000s, but some of it mid as well. 1996 was basically the twilight of the 90s spirit, with grunge, gangsta rap, 4th-gen consoles, and Gen-X fashion and attitudes waning in 1997 and 1998. I also don't see 1994 or 1995 as really having any significant 80s influences lingering, aside from a few songs by Michael Bolton and Def Leppard, but you also didn't have millennial things like Timbaland, Sabrina, 7th Heaven, etc.

Interesting, I wonder how arcticfox would feel about these statements. ;D That Guy's a funny dude!!

He's very dogmatic about his perspective of cultural decades, which makes him fun to debate against. I'm especially intrigued by how coherent he sees the 90s when to me, every sub-era it produced is extremely distinct. He definitely exaggerates the difference between 1997 and 1998-2001, though. I can understand referring to Beavis & Butthead and Scarface's The Untouchable as huge mid-90s influences still prevalent that year, but Third Eye Blind's self-titled debut and Sugar Ray's "Fly?" 1997 was frankly one of the most transitional years for alternative music in the 90s, considering older bands like Soundgarden, Gin Blossoms, The Cranberries, and Hootie & the Blowfish (except for one hit in late 1998) were cleanly replaced by Matchbox Twenty, Third Eye Blind, Sugar Ray,  Chumbawamba, and Smash Mouth, to name a few. I especially don't follow him though when he says stuff like "No Diggity" and "Steelo" sound like they're from the early 90s, a period that was defined by stuff like "Motownphilly," "Live and Learn," and "Nothin' My Love Can't Fix."

I seriously still just hope he apologizes for or explains his post in the North Carolina thread, which came completely out of nowhere and felt terribly out of character. Right now, it's causing him to come off as someone disturbingly ignorant and not the passionately individualistic ArcticFox I know and love. :\'(

Not completely, but it's that some of the early 00s fashion was still worn.

Not all of it though. The R&B singers I mentioned were (and still are) actually great.

Hip Hop was still all about being a "tuff thug" but that's pretty much it. It certainly wasn't a minority thing, either. Tons of people were into bad faux-Emo and Post-Post Grunge as these were mainstream genres. Rock music went to the dogs and turned from something that was very diverse to some of the most bland/generic music I've ever heard. Anime is definitely not tough and Latin music was mostly an early 00's trend.

Yeah, some but the essentials were gone. Dickies, Level 27, Atticus, Hurley, Hilfiger weren't cool anymore.

But it was what the genre had predominately become. Great or not they didn't have the same sound.

For something like that, I absolutely wish somebody could mention core 2000s R&B. It makes core 2000s music very decent. To be fair, pop music wasn't that bad during the mid-late 2000s.

I knew this for a very long time, but I didn't want to admit it in front of him since Jordan is one of my favorite users on this site who I have a lot of respect for. A lot of people who are around 15 years older than me feel like my teacher friends, whether I know them in my personal life or the internet.

I've said many times before on this site that you can't automatically judge a time period based off one specific culture that you follow the most. You gotta look at the big picture or everything. Political, worldly, social justice, sports, different cultural backgrounds of music or fashion, internet evolving over time, genres of TV shows, movies, gaming, etc. It depends on what you follow(ed) the most. If someone believes that the mid 2010's is currently the best time of their life right now, then there's no problem with that. People from different age groups, cultural backgrounds, or generations will have different taste in things based off how they grew up.

Thanks to you or UltraGameDog bringing this up. I'm thinking about starting a thread about the black pop culture throughout the core or mid 2000's. I have to refresh my memory and put it altogether so we can make a good discussion.

That's true, but remember that not all real mainstream 00s rap was tough and thuggy. There were some not like that such as Jay-Z, Twista, Kanye and Nas.

There was tons; however, there were tons of people into other genres as well during that era. In fact, were all mainstream Rock faux-Emo and Post-Post Grunge? I'm sure there were many bands who were not into that image at the time you're describing.

Anime music doesn't have to be tough. It can be melodic and energized and still be wonderful. Not all music was created to have a tough vibe. Frankly, Hip-Hop and Rock didn't began like that either. As for Latin, does J.Lo, Shakira and Frankie J ring a bell? They all had songs in the real 2000s and they were mainstream.

Yeah, but I don't like the sound of hip hop around then. Especially the stuff Jay-Z was doing.

Yeah, seriously, I'm not kidding when I say that. This is during the time where hip hop was the dominant form of music for youth and I'd admit, there was a lot of different hip hop to choose from (though, none of it is stuff I would listen to. I like 1979-1996 hip hop) but rock got pushed over to the side. Because of the decline in rock focus, the variety also became less and we went from tons of different Pop Punk, Nu Metal, Pop Rock, Alternative, Post-Grunge, Post-Hardcore and real Emo to Post-Post Grunge and faux-Emo.

I should probably clarify that I'm just kidding about calling it "wussy". ;D But Anime music, I don't remember it being a big mainstream thing on the charts or the radio. Yeah, but the main Latin trend was pretty much over aside from a few leftover artists.

Yeah, they do. A lot of the guys have short hair but I see quite a bit of the wings haircut, too. The girls mostly look like that typical mean girls fashion. I don't see them wearing any tomboy styles or short center-parted hair or bob cuts. I barely see any dreads, spiky hair that's either bleached or frosted, dickies pants or chain wallets.

Here's an early 00's yearbook from 2003:

Yes, but a lot of the songs I heard were more dancy than the songs from the beginning of the decade that were slower and soulful.

What did he do?

Well, there may have been many bands like those you're describing; however, there were a few or some who were in the minority

I never said Anime music was mainstream.

There were those types as well, but the soulful R&B sound was still in the genre.

Here's some from 2004 and 2005

There's still a few hidden early 00s elements.

Stuff like "Show Me What You Got", "Let Me Love You", "Death of Auto Tune", and "Empire State of Mind" to name a few that were played on the radio during the later half of the 00's. That is not the style of music I like at all.

This was the majority of rock music during the real 2000s, though. In the minority, yes, in the underground there was slightly more variety but even then it became flooded with more faux-Emo rip offs.

Ok, I guess I misunderstood what you said.

Yeah, it might of still been there but it seemed that RnB lost most of it's soulful sound and gave way to a more dancy club-oriented sound.

I see your point but it's still just hidden. It's the plainest fashions leftover and non of the essentials that made the late 90s/early 00s fashion really cool.

Jordan never insulted you. So, I don't know why you get upset over his posts.

I know it's you opinion, but what are you taking about? Those bolded songs are fantastic.

But still within that minority, there were bands not part of that image.

When you mean dancy club-oriented, are you talking about Rhianna, Beyonce, Ciara etc?

What were the essentials of the late 90s/early 00s fashion? Are there certain elements that make that era distinct?

No, I'm just saying that Jordan never insulted you. So you're basically getting upset over trivial bullsh*t.

I don't like the style. Like, my favorite era of Hip Hop is the late 80's. I like the grooves and the beats, stuff that's funky. I play the bass and the reason I got into Hip Hop is because of how funky it was. I like stuff like the Ultramagnetic MC's, Beastie Boys, Run DMC and NWA. Hip Hop, in my opinion, was really good to 1996 and just fell off afterwards. Those songs don't have the elements that got me into hip hop in the first place.

They were apart of rock's image in the real 00's, though. They were the minority among the hip hop but in rock circles, they are the bands that had come to represent rock music. Mainstream Rock was extremely bland in the real 00's and there was a huge lack of variety and unfortunately this seeped into the underground.

Yeah, stuff like that. Songs like Rhianna's type of music is the style of RnB I heard throughout the real 00's.

Stuff like: Dickies, Hurley, Atticus, Level 27, Hilfiger, Spiky hair (sometimes bleached, dyed or frosted), Aaron Carter type hair, chain wallets, bright colors, 3/4 shorts, gas station worker button shirts and dreads to name a few. A lot of these important elements were gone. The rest of the decade was very plain and only had small resemblances to the earlier style.
