Ignoring how forgettable 7th grade was for me, it was the school year I finally made it to black belt in Martial Arts America, but it wasn't easy, I had to pass 3 pretests in order to go through the final Black Belt Test in order to earn victory! It was tough. Pop culturally, by this time, the core 2000's were over and the transition from late 2000's to early 2010's culture had began, since Barack Obama was elected and inaugurated which changed the vibe and pop culture in a heartbeat. I remember jumping around being excited with my friends with Obama got elected! It's feels like yesterday. I played a lot of Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl around the time. I remember the 2008-09 school year feeling completely different in my life compared to the 2007-08 school year, since my entire house got renovated, my youngest sister was born, and the fashion slowly started changing around where I lived.

Very transformative school year. I was in Grade 11. The worst year in my personal life, but I enjoyed the direction pop culture was headed in, starting with the release of "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry in the summer of '08, by early '09 I was back into listening to the Top 40 radio.

Also the quintessential Great Recession school year. A few of my friends lost their jobs, as did I, but I hated that job so I wasn't complaining. It was also the year Facebook and Twitter took off, and the emo fashion backlash came full circle and died that year. Flip phones quickly became unpopular and I started seeing more Blackberries and sliding texting phones as the year progressed, and also got to play with my friend's iPhone for the first time. A lot of kids had the iPod Touch as well, those poor souls, but iPods were still the king of the campus, with me buying a new 120GB iPod that year as well after my old one broke. It wasn't until the year after when iPods would die out (mostly).

My junior year of high school was the worst too, academically the most difficult and toughest for my personal life, and that was the 2012-13 school year for me. It seems like we have a different viewpoint of the pop culture yet we have similar lifestyles!

Man, it had to be crushing for that magical 9-7 Cardinals team, and to this day still the only team in the NFC West without a Super Bowl ring, but before they got to the Super Bowl they had to defeat my Atlanta Falcons 30-24 in the Wild-Card game  8-P, and my Falcons were on the road at Arizona against them! Back to the Super Bowl, the pick six at the goal line right before halftime the Steelers had, the safety, and the late TD at the end is what helped them barely escaped, if I remember correctly.

Fringe was really good, and looking back Batman Brave & the Bold wasn't that bad. It wasn't on the same level as the DC Animated Universe shows since it felt more watered down and kiddy, but it was a decent Batman series based off the Silver Age comics from the 50's or 60's.

I was pulling for Kurt Warner since he was my former Quarterback! ::)  My mom was pulling for Pittsburg since she grew up with the steel curtain. ;D ::)
She got her wish! ;D  But man it's gonna be fun watching the AFC South over the next few years; with Newton rising, Matt Ryan looking to reclaim what was his years ago, Winston maturing into a pro bowl level star, and Drew Brees near the end of his career.

You mean NFC South, but yeah, since 2008 our division has been a roller coaster ride. (except for the Bucs but they will get better soon) Honestly, I think the Falcons door has closed now with Matt Ryan, especially with our brutal schedule coming up later this 2016 season. 2012 was our best shot to win the Super Bowl for our city in years, since then players like John Abraham, Tony Gonzalez, Roddy White (just recently), William Moore, Asante Samuel, etc. have retired and we've lost so many key pieces on the offensive lines and defensive lines, as a result we've missed the playoffs 3 straight years. We still have Julio Jones, Desmond Trufant, Matt Ryan (of course), and Kroy Biermann, but they can't do it all by themselves.

Basically this was the transitional school year from my Very Late Childhood/Tweens into my Early Teens. This school year had some decent pop culture when it came to movies and music, but cartoons not so much. This was also the year I discovered Modern Call of Duty, through playing Modern Warfare and World at War at friends houses!

http://www.covershut.com/covers/Call-Of-Duty-4-Modern-Warfare-Front-Cover-7714.jpghttp://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VYne5toYsbo/UKnt1nIRYHI/AAAAAAAAAHE/LghoYsUCp9A/s1600/call+of+duty+world+at+war+(15).jpg

These games along with COD 3, and MW2 & Black Ops 1, were the pinnacle of the COD franchise with great single player campaigns and fun and enjoying multiplayer experiences. Unfortunately the series started to go downhill with MW3 with its lackluster story in comparison with the first two Modern Warfares and the very cheap and lackluster multiplayer experience

I was a junior in high school.

That was the school year a lot of styles we associate with the 2010s became trendy (nerdy glasses, colorful clothing, skinny jeans).

It was also the school year of the mass exodus from Myspace to Facebook. In the fall of 2008 Myspace was still dominant among my classmates. Then in spring 2009 the transition began, and by summer of that year Facebook had taken over.

You were in the same grade as me.

Speaking of fashion, it was the first time I saw someone wearing checkered shorts. At first I thought someone came into school with their boxers on, I was shocked!  :o Then the following weeks I saw other dudes wearing it.

It's Polo Ralph Lauren, which was very huge for at least people on the East Coast of the U.S.

Like ocarinafan said, the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years were the peak in popularity of Polo Ralph Lauren clothes and shoes. The small sign Polo shirts were more affordable for most people, but the big sign Polo shirts with numbers and/or a country flag symbol were a lot more expensive.

Nice! Yeah, I remember the mall brands being really popular, though we don't have Polo Ralph Lauren in Canada. I got most my shirts from Aeropostale or American Eagle. There was Hollister & Fitch as well, but I never went there because I thought it was the "snobby kids store", or so I read online. H&M took off the following school year from what I remember, they make really cheap (price) but really preppy clothing.

There were other stores I liked going to as well, Bench, Guess, Jean Factory, and a few Canadian stores like Elemental (neon clothing), Slip Notes (pseudo-vintage) and Sky 41 (neon but preppy).

The 2008-2009 school year was not that bad. But it wasn't as good as the 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, and even the 2007-08 school years. It just seemed like a transition from the 2000s to 2010s, much like anybody else said here. The 2008 half was more 2000s, while the 2009 half started to feel like the 2010s. Mid 2009 was basically the last time when late 2000s culture was around.

As did I, pop-culturally.

Music - 2008-09 wins. (Bad Romance/Pokerface)
TV - 2008-09 wins. (Breaking Bad)
Video games - 2007 > 2009 > 2008 (video games go better in full years than school years)
Movies - 2008-09 wins (Dark Knight, Wall-E, Slumdog Millionaire)
Cartoons - 2008-09 (I didn't watch many cartoons, but Phineas & Ferb aired for the entirety of this year so it kind of wins by default)

IMO.

I wholeheartedly agree with most of this! For movies I think it goes better in full years than school years too. 2007 was one of the best years for movies of the 2000's decade IMO, and definitely the best of all the late 2000's years. 2008 & 2009 were good years for movies but I can't choose which year offered the better movies. 2008 had Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk which started the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also had The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Kung Fu Panda, Twilight, and Momma-Mia! 2009 had Avatar, The Blind Slide, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Twilight: New Moon, and UP. Yep, looking back, 2009 had higher quality and better movies than 2008.

Yep. It was transitioning into the early '10s, but it was a late 2000s school year for the most part.

Out of the school years I experienced, I would say

1997/98 -- transition into Y2K era, a lot of mid-90s holdovers
1998/99 -- late 90s school year, some mid-90s holdovers
1999/00 -- quintessential late 90s school year
2000/01 -- early 2000s school year with a lot of late 90s holdovers
2001/02 -- early 2000s school year with few late 90s holdovers

2003/04 -- transition into mid-2000s

2005/06 -- mid-2000s school year, some late 2000s foreshadowing

2008/09 -- transition into early 2010s, mostly late 2000s

Why don't more people think 1996-1997 was the real transition from the mid-90s to the Y2K era? There really aren't that many significant mid-90s holdovers still present during the 1997-1998 school year except for Beavis & Butthead's last season. If you're referring to classic 90s influences, then it's a very different story, but I don't see how 1997-1998 was the primarily transitional period with mostly mid-90s influences, considering the amount of significant new shows that premiered during that period, the changes in the hip hop industry, the fifth generation of gaming becoming fully established, teen pop blowing up, and grunge/flannel fashion petering out to make way for sleeker late 90s styles.

Anyway, while we're on the subject, this is how I would personally frame the school years, beginning with the 80s:

1980-1981 – Mostly late 70s, but with a lot of early 80s influences coming in.
1981-1982 – Early 80s with lots of lingering late 70s influences.
1982-1983 – Quintessential early 80s school year.
1983-1984 – Transition from early 80s to mid-80s, but leaning a bit more towards latter.
1984-1985 – Regular mid-80s school year, very few early 80s influences lingering over.
1985-1986 – Quintessential mid-80s school year.
1986-1987 – Mid-80s school year, some late 80s influences coming in.
1987-1988 – Primary transition from mid-80s to late 80s, but still leaning more towards the former.
1988-1989 – Late 80s school year with some mid-80s holdovers.
1989-1990 – Quintessential late 80s school year.
1990-1991 – Late 80s school year with some early 90s influences coming in.
1991-1992 – Transition from late 80s to early 90s, some holdovers from the former.
1992-1993 – Quintessential early 90s school year.
1993-1994 – Transition from early 90s to mid-90s, leaning a bit more towards the former.

2001-2002 – Quintessential early 2000s school year.
2002-2003 – Early 2000s school year with few mid-2000s influences coming in.

2004-2005 – Quintessential mid-2000s school year.
2005-2006 – Mid-2000s school year with some late 2000s influences coming in.
2006-2007 – Late 2000s school year with some mid-2000s influences lingering on.

I agree with 2007-08 being the quintessential late 2000's year, in fact, I can't say all of 2007 or all of 2008 were quintessential to the late 2000's, because early 2007 and late 2008 did not feel quintessential to the late 2000's at all, so it's best to pick the 2007-08 school year for that one.

I agree with 2010-11 being the quintessential early 2010's school year, but I wouldn't mind saying the whole year of 2011 was quintessential to the early 2010's too. For the early 2000's, I would just say that the entire year of 2002 was quintessential to the early 2000's. For the mid 2000's I'd go with all of 2005. I see how you have the quintessential Y2K school year but no quintessential late 90's. I'd pick 1999 as the quintessential late 90's year.

Excuse me the 08-09 school year was the Quintessential late 2000s school year. It built upon everything and accumulated what had happened during the 07-08 school year.

I'm only going to say this once, but the same school year Barack Obama was elected and inaugurated, and the same school year Lady Gaga got big and Black Eyed Peas came out with Boom Boom Pow was definitely not quintessential to the late 2000's. No way. That's like saying the 2000-01 school year was quintessential to the late 90's when George Bush got elected and inaugurated and a lot of 2000's cultural TV shows and movies started debuting or getting popular, which is definitely not true. 2008-09 was the transition from late 2000's to early 2010's culture, sorry, and the majority of the people on here would agree with that. No offense, but your opinion on cultural periods are really off because you want to distance yourself from early 2010's culture, and there was no problem with it.

You can at least agree with me the 08-09 school year was tail end late 2000s since the culture as a whole lasted from late 2006-early 2009. Also why do you have to be such a bitch, I know I don't like early 2010s culture as much as late 2000s culture but just to inform you I did very much enjoy the early 2010s.

It definitely was, but 2001-2002 was the immediate aftermath of 9/11, during which the patriotic resurgence was most prominent. 2002-2003, on the other hand, saw the beginning of the Iraq War and even the capture of Saddam Hussein.

I think there are some cases when it comes to quintessential periods, it's best to go by the full year instead of the school year, while it other cases it's best to go by school year instead of full year. For example, for the quintessential late 2000's, I can't say 2007 as a whole or 2008 as a whole was quintessential because early 2007 or late 2008 were not quintessential to the late 2000's, so I pick 2007-08, or Fall 2007-Summer 2008 as the quintessential late 2000's. When it comes to the early 2000's, I don't think 2001-02 or 2002-03 were quintessential because late 2001 didn't feel quintessential to the early 2000's yet while early 2003 didn't feel quintessential to the early 2000's anymore due to 50 cent making his debut and That's So Raven premiering, so I just pick the entire year of 2002 as quintessential to the early 2000's. When it comes to the early 2010's, I'm find with picking 2010-11 or 2011 as a whole as quintessential to the early 2010's.

As for my memories of the 2008-2009 school year itself, I can say it was roughly the period that music started to improve, thanks to electropop slowly replacing snap. It was also when I first got my Facebook account, though even my first memories with the site are a mixed bag, as the site stirred up more drama than it brought me closer to my classmates. I was still a huge fan of AVGN, which was still in its golden era at the time. I rediscovered my love for theatre after seeing my school's production of The Pirates of Penzance, especially thanks to the person who played Major General Stanley. This was my first year as part of my school's student jazz combo, which was a lot of fun to be a part of. I sustained a knee injury in the spring, which prevented me from being in shape for track season. Eurobeat was still pretty much the only thing I listened to regularly during this time, though I was just starting to get more interested in popular music again for said reasons. 2008-2009 was not only my school's centennial, but also the final year of our headmaster's 26-year administration, as well as the last school year before the introduction of a sixth grade.

Ahhh this one was very changeful. I witnessed the election and inauguration of Obama; music switched from Ringtone Rap to Electro-pop; fashion was all colorful and smaller; Emo was still there during the first half although Scene was taking over; Youtube was fantastic for anything; I gave presentations to Freshman English classes for Disability Awareness; CN was decent (much better than the last 2 years) and this is the year the Twilight Craze began as well.  ;D

Really!? This was the same school year Toonami got cancelled and CN Real debuted! That was the lowest point in CN history with barely any original programming! CN didn't get good again until around 2010 to early 2011. While CN was already getting bad by the 2006-2007 school year (which is when I began to loose interest in CN) at least it still had most of its original shows going on, Toonami was still alive despite me losing interest in the block, and Cartoon Cartoon Top 5 was still there. I'd still take that year over 2008-2009 any day.

Tell me about it! The 2008-09 school year was actually was last year in college, meaning that I had the misfortune of graduating in the Spring of 2009, which was when the Great Recession was at it's absolute worst point. Unemployment, for example, peaked at 10% around June or July of 2009, I believe. Things were so bad at that time that it took me over a year just to get called in for a job interview after I got my diploma.

I know this could be debated, but has there ever been a worse year (since maybe the Great Depression) to graduate college than 2009? I mean, sure, the economy sucked in the '70s, and the recessions in the early '80s, early '90s, and early '00s were all pretty bad, but 2009 was just atrocious with those hundreds of thousands of jobs being lost every month. 2008 and 2010 weren't that much better either, for that matter. Really, all of us Core Millennials born in 1986, 1987 and 1988 got hosed. >:(

Sorry if it sounds like I'm hating on 2008-09, by the way. I actually liked the pop culture of that school year overall, but the bad economy just loomed large over everything for those of us in the job market at that time.

7th grade year of middle school for me, so many adjustments in my personal life from that transitional summer of 2008 and the absolute worst grade of middle school for me. Summer 2009 payed off though and 8th grade (2009-10) was a lot better, but still not perfect though.

Yes really! I watched CN during those two years you listed and they were awful as ever. The only shows that were decent were Ben 10, Camp Lazlo, Pokemon, C/O 3000, Foster's Home, KND, Billy & Mandy and the shows on Toonami. The bumpers were definitely bland; the rest of the other shows were stale; there were no more Fridays (it was basically there for the first part of the 2006-07 year as it ended in February). I did like the Grim Adventure TV movie that came out at that time though. As for the next one, it was even worse. There was a live-action show on the network (Out of Jimmy's head); some shows I listed were ending or not airing as much anymore and a few were excellent; the bumpers were dull and then there was Fried Dynamite which was a replacement for the Fridays block (which I didn't like as all). This is also the first year that Snyder was entirely president of CN (during the previous one, he was partially as it began with Samples as president).

Now the reason why the 2008-09 CN was great for me is that it had much better shows such as The Clone Wars, Secret Saturdays, Ben 10: AF, TDI (it wasn't that bad), Chowder, Flapjack and Johnny Test (only the first 3 seasons); in the bumpers, the characters were able to take form of the noods and even interact with each other (which had not been seen since the City era) and were full of art as the characters were able to splatter with each other which was sweet and the channel lasted until 11pm (that's when AS would switch in until it was changed to 10pm) extending CN to 14 hours. The things I didn't like was there was no Toonami :\'(, certain shows, the movie block and the wedgie shorts. OTT, it was magnificent (much better than what was going to come next in the 2009-10 year, but PH and the City eras still take the cake for excellence in everything)

Well, there's modern Nickelodeon, and I would say it's even worse than CN Real. At least THAT block didn't shove random pop cultural references into kids' mouths. Especially when they encourage kids to sign up on social media sites.

Economic-wise, there's the Great Depression, that terribly affected the American economy from 1929-1939. A whole decade, instead of just two plain years. I mean, the Great Recession was bad, but not as long nor bad as the one in the '30s.

It seems like a lot of people actually consider 2008-2009 the quintessential late 2000s school year because they associate things like the election of Obama, Lady Gaga, the onset of the Great Recession, and Facebook with the late 2000s instead of the early 2010s. I've heard crazy thing about Alberta politics recently. Like a farmers protest turned into a white supremacist rally outside the legislature :o

Yup, it's kinda sad some Albertans are acting like the premier is Donald Trump. I have no problem with the government so far and they even froze tuition which is great for me as a student.

Damn, that's awesome! :D I was angry at the Ontario Liberals because under them, tuition pretty much goes up 3-5% every year, but in 2017-18 they are going to be giving free tuition (in the form of grants) to everyone with families earning under $50k, which significantly improved my opinion of them, even though I won't ever see the benefits of that.

Wouldn't that make 2009-10 the quintessential year? In 2008-09 most those things were still being established.

Well, Obama was not elected during 2009-2010, and too many clear early 2010s things were arriving by that point, i.e. Glee, Ke$ha, iPhones being common, while other things associated with the late 2000s, such as snap, Timbaland's golden age, etc. were already over.

Here's why the 2010-11 school year, or Fall 2010-Summer 2011 was the quintessential early 2010's period.

The release of Call of Duty Black Ops and the Kinect for XBOX 360, which kicked off the second half of 7th generation gaming

The peak of Barack Obama's 1st term

Electropop era of music peaked and it was the last full school year of clean hip hop and R&B before trap rap took over the following year

Angry Birds game and merchandise peaked

Jersey Shore peaked

Breaking Bad peaked

Glee peaked

The Walking Dead premiered

First school year with Adventure Time and Regular Show, which got very popular quickly and brought CN back from the dead, as well as started a new Renaissance Age for cartoons too

the last full school year with leftover 2000's cultural movies like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Shrek: Happy Ever After, Toy Story 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, etc. and also the Marvel Cinematic Universe was still very young in phase 1 like Iron Man 2 and Thor.

Windows 7 & up era started peaking

These are all the facts I've used to support my opinion on why late 2010-mid 2011 was the peak of early 2010's culture.

That doesn't make sense. Look at what I explained on my two charts. If 2010-2011 was the quintessential early 2010's year when those stuff would have been established throughout 2008-2009 (the transition) and almost complete by 2009-2010 (first true early 2010's year), so how could those be quintessential late 2000's years? The quintessential late 2000's school year was 2007-2008 bro. I'll explain why if you need me too.

Obama's election and campaign are quintessential late 2000's, but his inauguration and presidency are 2010's things, and you have to keep in mind that Obama's election and "Yes We Can" campaign occurred throughout late 2007 through most of 2008, which was part of the quintessential late 2000's period from 2007-2008. His inauguration in 2009 (which was part of the 2008-2009 school year) set up his presidency (or 1st term) which is clearly part of early 2010's culture. It's just like how the inauguration of George Bush and his presidency define the early 2000's, not late 90's. It doesn't make sense for the electropop era to define the late 2000's. The electropop era started in 2008 and peaked throughout 2009-2012, therefore it's more early 2010's than late 2000's. I agree with the recession being late 2000's, since it technically started in 2007. Facebook definitely peaked for more of the early 2010's too. 2007-2008 was the last time Myspace was predominantly popular. 2008-2009 was the transition from Myspace to Facebook in popularity, and by 2009-2010 Facebook peaked, which continued until 2011-2012.

Still part of the 2007-08 school year though. Spring & Summer 2008 was the peak of Obama's election and Yes We Can campaign. By Fall 2008 & Spring 2009 Obama was elected and inaugurated which set up his presidency for most of the 2010's.

The peak of Obama's campaign? Do you mean the beginning? I'm pretty sure the mania built up bigger and bigger as we got closer to the election, so that would obviously be 2008-09 school year.

Of course I love the early 2000s... Do you mean the early 2010s? Cause pop culture wise I liked 2010 and 2012, but didn't like 2011. I'm also counting half of 2013 too, so I liked that as well.

No, I meant the early 2000s.

You call that song fun and call some other recent ones horrible? Oh please, that song was a complete joke and a disgrace to mankind.  8-P

Miley Cyrus- We Can't Stop & Wrecking Ball, Selena Gomez- Come and Get It, Daft Punk- Get Lucky (overrated and annoying as hell), and Lorde- Royals were just as irritating to my ears as well.

"Fun" would be "Macarena," "5,6,7,8," "Barbie Girl," and maybe even "What Does the Fox Say?". "Friday" is for ear-masochists.

How is it not fun though? It captures the spirit of every Friday in 2011 perfectly. Partyin' partyin' Yeah! Partyin' partyin' Yeah! Fun. Fun. Fun. Fun. Looking forward to the weekend! My coworkers used to sing it all the time every Friday. ;D

T.G.I.F by Katy Perry also came out that year. Just goes to show that 2011 had the best Fridays.

I liked Royals and Daft Punk, but yeah, the other songs you listed suck. For Selena Gomez though, I really liked her song "Like A Love Song" and that was 2011.

If this was serious, then I don't think a lot of people cared about the song. For one thing, they despised the song so much, that it was one of the most-disliked YouTube videos.

I'm half-serious. I mean, I know the song is terrible, that's the reason it got popular. But it's exactly because it's so terrible that I like it. I liked the vibe of the time it came out, people didn't take themselves too seriously and just kicked back and sang along to a cheesy ass song. It completely fits my personality. ;D

Yeah, I remember singing it at my first semester in university. People using lines from it to pick up girls, and other things like asking where the washroom is. Turns out it released October 2011 in Canada, and February 2012 in the US.  So over here it is a 2011 song, further proving that 2011 was GOAT.

Yeah it was on the radio late 2011. I got sick of the song by March 2012 just in time when Americans had to put it on replay again.  ;D It was a good song but very overplayed.

However, like i said before i was born in '95 so that means my other half of childhood years was in the 2000s when all of these kids were just born. They dont know anything about the hype of cd players, mp3 players or the ipod or iphone or even side kicks. The 90s was a good time thta everybody wants to be apart of!!!

I'm sorry you feel this way man and I can't blame you for being sarcastic like this. It's best to ignore the older folks who try to put our generation down. It's just rose colored nostalgia goggles, and the pop culture that's relevant now will be praised like gold years later when people miss what's current right now. Everybody goes through this including myself. You're not the only one. I went through my growing pains on the internet when I was around your age or younger.

I wrote a forum post in 2007 (when I was 14) about how anyone over 20 playing video games can never get a girlfriend, so I think I was the opposite of being insecure about my age. :o

I got a reply "20 isnt old u n00b"
