Subject: 2000s Pirate Craze

Written By: 1999 Baby, 2000s Kid on 08/13/16 at 4:11 pm

From around 2003 to 2007 (mostly due to Pirates of the Caribbean), all this pirate stuff started coming out, and I loved it. I watched the movies and played the games so much during that time. People dressed up as pirates for Halloween way more back then too (from my experience). Any time they announce a pirate movie or game, I always get excited, anyone else feel this way, did you like all the pirate stuff then?

I thought this was about the piracy that happened during the 2000s, since people used Limewire and other MP3 services to download songs illegally.

Haha, yeah, the only thing I knew about piracy while growing up were the commercials I saw on VHS tapes.

There were a lot of ads that I watched about piracy being bad. Especially on the DVDs that were distributed by 20th Century Fox in the mid 2000s, which kinda gave it an identity for me when I watched them.

I remember this being a meme in the late 2000s for some reason. Even though I didn't really watch the Pirates episode from Lazy Town, since it wasn't really one of my favorite Nick Jr. shows to begin with.

I love Sid Meier's Pirates, one of my favorite games of all time! Also wanted to mention I completely forgot about Lazy Town.

Meh. I didn't really care that much about watching Lazy Town. I only remember the characters, and maybe some of the episodes.

Yeah, I only remember bits and pieces, and a few characters, but I remember watching it sometimes.

Same with me. I watched it like it was one of my favorite Nick Jr. shows. But I find something like Oswald, Little Bear, Maisy, Miffy and Friends, and a bunch of other shows that Nick Jr. and Noggin aired to be better.

There was also the old meme of Pirates vs Ninjas which was pretty funny. Of all types of characters people decided to match Pirates with Ninjas.

That game was made by the guys who made the 2003 Pirates of the (which has nothing to do with the movie mostly) Caribbean RPG, I loved that game, I might actually buy this depending on the price.

Anti- piracy measures: disenfranchise the poor from culture.

Honestly, I hate this anti-piracy crap.

Yeah, anti-piracy ads were kinda inaccurate. I mean, people didn't give a crap if they downloaded an MP3 off Limewire. Hell, I did the same when I downloaded ROM files off gaming sites back when I was into retro gaming. I even tried to download torrents, but it took too long for me since it was like that.

That seems cool. I wish America had the same thing, but I guess they thought piracy was bad though. It was still fun downloading MP3s at the time.

Piracy was a big deal in the 2000s. I remember they were really tracking illegal downloads and making a big deal out of it. These days, nobody really gives a care anymore.

Heh. I guess it was somehow different in the United States. Although, people never really downloaded pirated stuff on the Internet, since it contained viruses and other stuff that could harm their computer.

Well LimeWire was popular in the U.S. in the 2000s. Along with many other programs.

Yep. People in the U.S. didn't really care about it being illegal. They just wanted to download songs from it, despite getting viruses from it. Although, I could say that Limewire is like the mid 2000s Napster.

I actually wasn't talking about the consumers I was talking about the feds. Piracy was newer and therefore a bigger deal in the 00s from companies and the law.

Oh... that. Yeah, I'm surprised a lot of people didn't get caught by the Feds for downloading illegal music from their personal computers.

It's okay. I thought you were talking about piracy, since..

A) Piracy was really big in the 2000s. Especially when a lot of people used services like Napster and Limewire, which is well known for downloading music without permission.
B) People seems to be nostalgic for it, so I thought "Why the hell not" when I replied to your thread.

Yeah, I remember this craze especially since I read one of the books in my class in middle school. I wasn't into the fad that much, but I could see this being an awesome trend for kids that seemed to have been forgotten for some reason.

Did anyone here happen to play the 2003 Pirates of the Caribbean RPG that didn't actually have much to do with the movie? I think it's a very underrated game, it was on Xbox and PC. It was semi open world, you could get your own fleet, crew, and explore islands, here is the trailer.

I never knew this actually existed. I think there were a few games based on Pirates of the Caribbean, but I thought it was after 2003.

It's not very well known, it's the game I've mentioned to people that no one knows about, but I played it a lot up until 2008 when we got an Xbox 360.

It looks like one of those RPGs that had 3D graphics (not like Final Fantasy) in the 2000s.

First WRPG I played was Fable. Hated it!  ;D Mass Effect was the first WRPG I liked, I played Oblivion before that.

I've only played a few RPGs from personal computer gaming companies. They're something like Runescape, but it's not like an MMORPG.

Never played Mass Effect, but I love Oblivion honestly. I never played the first Fable, only Fable 3 when it was free. I thought it was alright.

I played Runescape once, not enough time to judge it though. I played Fallout and Fallout 2, which are isometric PC RPGs, but my favorite RPG has to be The Elder Scrolls series, I own and love all of them.
