But it was pretty decent year culturally. Personal life wise, it was ok.

Overall I still enjoyed 2003 a lot better pop culturally from a kid perspective too, and you're right 2004 wasn't as good as 2003 but it was still a fun year overall. In summer 2003 our family stayed in the house most of the time while I was playing with toys, going outside, or watching TV, but in summer 2004 our family went on some long vacations like Sarasota, FL and Jamaica. 2004 was also a fun year playing on the Gamecube or Playstation 2.

I actually think if I had been born a year earlier I would have liked 2004 better. Cause my personal life during the second half of the year was NOWHERE NEAR as good as the first half. My first day of 3rd grade was hell.... >:( >:( >:( ;D

;D Finally, someone who can understand my struggle. (or maybe someone I can pick on too  :P :P)

When I was 12, I was so sick of it that I got a pair of scissors and trimmed the facial hair myself.  ;D

I told my brother, who told my uncle, who laughed his ass off before teaching me how to shave.

Yeah, it's going to be weird once I reach that stage. I already feel weird going on 18, people born in 2007 (most) are 9 now, my little cousin turned 9 today, and it makes me feel older. I don't feel close to an adult at all, but eventually I'll be 28 seeing 17 year olds born in 2010, that'll be weird.

It wouldn't surprise me if Late 2000's babies start to claim themselves as "2000's Kids" in a few years time (which they're not). I hate to sound like a broken record, but anyone born after 2002 has no right to claim themselves as a "2000's Kid".

I totally agree. 2004 was a very balanced year pop culturally, which is why I loved it being the pinnacle of my childhood. It wasn't too extreme like let's say 2001 but it wasn't as downgraded as 2006. 2004 was a very balanced/great year for television, video games, movies, etc. 2004 did have some bittersweet moments for me now but it was still a badass year overall!

Straight or not I'm sure it would still be a crazy story. I'm straight and I know I did some weird things in my mid teens. Things that I'd rather not mention or even think about.  :(

I don't get how teenage hood works. When you're a kid and you do something crazy it's all "I was just a little kid and it was pretty funny in hindsight", but when you're a teen it's all "Man, what I did was pretty f*cked up and I was in a bad spot by the end".

But overall 2004 wasn't a bad year to me. It's my favorite mid 2000s year. Although 2005 did have the best summer.

A lot of people say the very early 2000's like 2000 & 2001 before 9/11 was very extreme, in other words the pop culture was supposed to be "perfect" at the time. While people say that the later core 2000's years like 2006 or 2007 aren't that good at all. I'm not saying this is true IMO, but going by what a lot of people have said whether it's on this site or outside, it really makes 2004 a really balanced year pop culturally, which is why I liked it.

As much as I like 2000-2001 (I'd include 2002 in there since I still fail to notice the differences between 2002 and from 2000-2001 in terms of populate as they were nearly the exact same) I wouldn't necessarily call them "perfect" (but hey to each his own, right?) and while 2006 was a bit of a bland year 2007 wasn't bad at all.

It's also interesting to view 2004 in hindsight. It's a core 2000s year, but it doesn't give me the same vibes as say 2006 or '07.  I'm not sure if it's because of the early 2000s leftovers or if it's because this was still before the 2000s hit its quintessential cultural point.

Pro Skater 4 totally rules! I had a lot of fun with that game when it first came out. Last week I dug out my old Pro Skater 3 disc and played it for a bit on my PS2. That damn Canada level is one of the most annoying video games stages of all time!

Yeah, the mid 20s is a weird stage in life. If you go one way you were barely out of your teens, if you go the other way you are going to be 30 :o

I am still in the mindset of 21, I think to myself

yeah, it was just a few years ago I was a teenager. And then I think "hang on a few years ag...hold on, that was TEN years ago that I was in my mid teens!!!!

Gonna turn 27 in November, EEK!!! late 20s really sucks tbh. It felt like yesterday I was 16. Make the most of your life from a young age and look back with no regrets, that's all I can say.

On the thread I was 14 and my self consciousness had started. Oh and 2004 felt really modern with the likes of games like Half-Life 2 coming out. Back then every new year felt like the pinnacle of modernity after the millennium.

I can't believe how young some of ya'll were back then.

Pro Skater 4 totally rules! I had a lot of fun with that game when it first came out. Last week I dug out my old Pro Skater 3 disc and played it for a bit on my PS2. That damn Canada level is one of the most annoying video games stages of all time!

Yeah, I've been playing a lot of 6th gen games recently, and have been loving it! Sadly, I've never actually played Pro Skater 3, but I'm planning on ordering it soon to play it.

The PS2 version rocked because you could play as a female skater, customisation worked a lot better, the game seemed to run a bit faster, the maps were bigger and the graphics were much better than the crappy PS1 version I was stuck with. I only managed to unlock the San Francisco map before I lost the CD.

You must be talking about Elissa Steamer! Yeah, she is pretty cool! I played as a variety of skaters but I'd usually make my own dude (who else would I wanna play as aside from myself, I mean, come on now. ;) ;D). I had both the PS1 and PS2 versions.

But now people are realizing the distance between 2004-2006 (last pre-HD era if you will) and 2017 (where if your TV is even low end HD like 720p then your TV is considered old).

I was 6 years old and then I turned 7 years old in September. I have vague memories of 2004, like, accidentally bringing a pet experiment from school home once and leaving it in my backpack. I think we were learning about life cycles in second grade but I decided it was cool to take it home with me. It was an egg. I completely forgot all about it, and one day I found it, having unzipped my backpack at home and it hatched into a cricket. It leaped out and I remember my mom screaming and rushing to kill it. Oh, good memories.

When it comes to decade kid stuff, “hybrids” mean someone who spent both of their childhoods in the previous and following decade. So going by the 3-12 definition for childhood, a person born in 2003 for example was 3-6 in the 2000s and 7-12 in the 2010’s, which means they spent both of their childhood in the 2000’s and 2010’s, which equates to them being a hybrid, but some might lean one way or another.

I remember celebrating my 5th birthday back in '04.

I was just chillin', eating a Granny Smith apple (I still love them) and then my mom brought out a delicious ice cream cake with a #5 candle on it. She gave me a birthday card and then I watched Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon the rest of the day.

That was a great birthday! 8)

....?

2004 was arguably one of the best years for music in the 2000’s decade. Awesome year for R&B (peak in popularity for Usher, Destiny’s Child, Andre 3000), Rap (before the annoying snap/crunk rap fad of the mid 2000’s really hit off, peak in popularity for Jay Z, Eminem, and 50 Cent), 2003-2004. being the final hurrah for Post Grunge (Nickleback, Creed, The Foo Fighters), Pop Punk (American Idiot Era Green Day, Blink 182, peak in popularity for Avril Lavigne). I could go on and on!

Yeah but the memories aren't as fond as BEP's Elephunk era. Hey Mama, Where is the love, Let's Get it started, and Shut Up were all songs I remember listening to in 2003 because they were so popular. Don't Phunk With My Heart and My Humps were popular in '05 but they just weren't as good as the songs from Elephunk. My friend at the time liked My Humps though because apparently it was "funny".  :P

2003-2008 were all very trashy. In 2009, the trashy music started using more innuendo instead of saying things like "smack that all on the floor" and "why you got all that ass inside them jeans?" they just said "I wanna take a ride on your disco stick" which can be interpreted in many ways.

I can understand that many of the popular rap songs from 2003-2008 were trashy (but some were also catchy and even good).

However, do you consider most popular music from 2003-2008 to be trashy? I would disagree heavily. There were MANY non-trashy but also popular songs from that time.

While it was noticeably more trashy than music from 2000-2002/3, it was still no where as bad ass pop music was from 2005-2008. That era, was arguably one of the most bleak times in music history. You had the peak in popularity for snap/crunk rap, ‘dirty’ pop (think The Pussycat Dolls 8-P), and Emo rock (along with the subsequent rise in emo/scene subcultures). 2003 & 2004 definitely had a lot of those elements, but it was balanced out with the tail end of the early 2000’s musical influences. Despite that though, the Mid 2000’s we’re still a great time though!

But it agree with he general consensus that the 2000-2003/4 and Late 2008-2009 eras were the prime sections of music from the 2000’s decade. The music that plagued the prime years of the decade though, 2005-2008, were pretty crappy to say the least.

Yep, before kid culture started getting rather boring during mid-late 2005 (IMHO, disagree if you want). 2004-early/mid 2005 was very exciting with Megas XLR, the release of Star Wars Episode III, Clone Wars Volume 2, the 6th generation of gaming having its best year ever, Spongebob Movie, Fairly oddparents Channel Chasers, etc.

Unfortunately, one of my favorite popstars started showing signs of trouble in 2004.

Britney Spears started showing signs of trouble, getting married in Vegas for 55 hours. Was the start of her rebellious streak.

But she did release this huge pop hit, that year!

I can't believe that 2004 is 13/14 years ago.  :o  :o  :o

Same. I can't believe that in January, it will be 15 years since I started Preschool! :o I'm getting very old :-[

2004 is an interesting mix of old school and modern. Actually, the year feels very modern, but it feels like such a long time ago (over half my life ago now!) that sometimes makes me go "wow, I was alive then :o"

I agree especially with the last sentence.

To me, 2004 is old school. Not retro, but very old school.

I agree.

Unfortunately, one of my favorite popstars started showing signs of trouble in 2004.

Britney Spears started showing signs of trouble, getting married in Vegas for 55 hours. Was the start of her rebellious streak.

But she did release this huge pop hit, that year!

She killed pop music but she's one of your favourite pop stars? ;D

She made everyone go gaga in that diamond dress.  :-X

2004 was the release of Avril Lavigne's Under My Skin, her last good album. I can't believe that album came out so long ago!

There's enough stuff that has changed by now that 2004 to me is pretty much old school. With only about half of teens having mobile phones, more than half the country still using dial-up, online gaming still not being that relevant, and social media still being mostly a college thing are all stuff that make 2004 seem fairly ancient.

But that's the mix I'm talking about. In 2004, dial-up was ancient history (at least in urban Canada - broadband started take off in 2000), kids in my class started getting cellphones at the end of the year, I was an avid player of Runescape (MMO) that year and we had Counterstrike LAN parties at school on our laptops (through the WiFi our school installed that year). Those things just didn't happen two years prior.

But like you said half the country still didn't have broadband or a cellphone, and social media was yet to take off. Also, it just feels like forever ago.  ;D

Well Canada has always been ahead of the curb, so thats probably why it felt more new school than us. For most of the U.S, especially the Midwestern and Southern regions, the U.S still had a heavy old school aesthetic up until 2005 or 2006. However, there were already many modern things that popped into the mid 2000's like LAN parties, social media, flip phones, etc. that (due to the booming economy at the time) were inescapable to many Americans.

Many of these modern technological trends emerged in the mainstream around 2004-2005, but didn't really start to take steam until 2006-2007. By the time the iPhone released in June of 2007 (which also was around when the economy was starting to decline, and many modern technologies like HDTVs and WiFi were becoming common place) we were officially in the 'Modern' Section of the 2000's decade.

^ Yeah, I think it might be a country difference. While broadband finally captured 50% marketshare in the US in 2005, I just found that in Canada the number was 80% in 2005 according to Statistics Canada (under 2.2).

In 2003, after I finally got broadband (I was seriously late to the party), I remember looking up Internet price plans and I noticed "slower Internet" was more expensive than fast Internet, and I asked my dad why, and he said the more expensive ones are dial-up. I think at that point, dial-up must have been extinct in my city. ;D

I don't know why so many people think that Canada is so much more technologically advanced than the U.S. ;D.

In fact, Canada has always been slightly behind the U.S. in terms of tech.

Canadians just adapt faster I guess :P.

Uhh because it is... It is not "slightly behind the U.S. in terms of tech". Firstly, Slowpoke already showed you the stats. In the mid 2000s almost nobody had dial up here. Secondly, we have money made from polymer plastic while you still have paper bills. We have tap technology on credit cards while you still have swipe. We have had chip technology on debit/credit first too while you still had swipe. People were also apperently using social media earlier than you according to the posts on here. Plus so much more ahead in terms of health care, social progress, etc. So you saying Canada isn't ahead technologically isn't ahead and even saying it is behind is just plain wrong. I never understand your posts sometimes and you say this after Slowpoke posted the facts that barely anyone was using dial up here in 2004 because we were ahead of the U.S. and you still make that post. Your post just doesn't make any sense sometimes, hopefully that answered your question though. Have you even been to Canada? It doesn't sound like you know much about our country if you claim we are slightly behind the U.S.

Is that the "Ugh, you're another arrogant American" trope? It's not going to work here.

By the looks of it, that list simply seems to be based off just how much the technology sector contributes to the national economy, it doesn't really show how 'advanced' countries are in terms of day to day use of tech, I mean just look- India is ahead of Canada and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that's not really the case is it. ;)

There are 3 lists and one even includes a detailed explanation of how it was measured.

Obviously, I don't think that Canada is in the Middle Ages meanwhile the U.S. is in the year 2050 but the U.S. is a more technologically advanced country than Canada (slightly). Also, I did say that Canadians have just adapted faster with tech than the U.S., so I don't know what Slim95 was arguing about.

Well it sounded like the stereotypical American with that response. We are far ahead in many areas, and everyday tech is also one of them. It absolutely is up for debate, don't say that again. I have found Canada to be overall more advanced than the U.S. for tech, not less. I've been to both countries.
