Subject: The Xbox Thread

Written By: 1999 Baby, 2000s Kid on 11/15/16 at 5:07 pm

Man, it's been 15 years since the original Xbox launched with Halo: Combat Evolved on November 15, 2001. I grew up with the original Xbox ever since my dad got one in 2002, and have played Halo since 2008 (first time I was allow to play an M-rated game, it was Combat Evolved). I feel like the original Xbox is an underappreciated console, so I decided to make a thread for it (based on Eazy-EMAN's PlayStation 2 thread). I've spent so much time on this system and its games, so I thought I'd show some of the best ones.

There are probably 70+ more I could mention, but these are considered some of the best by the general public as well. Feel free to put games you feel should be mentioned, I just didn't want to add too much. ;D

6th gen consoles sure are showing their age. Can't believe it's been 15 years (almost 16).

I remember it getting a lot of hate before launch but I didn't hear much from it after.

Yeah, they are. I got an original Xbox last year (haven't played or owned one since '08) and have been collecting games for it, and I'm noticing so many more differences. It's more than I expected it would be, I still really enjoy playing on it though. :)

Xbox eventually got the number 2 spot, but I wonder why PS2 sold so much more than the other two? It came out a year earlier, Xbox was a newcomer, and the GameCube was looked at as the kids' console, those are the reasons I can think of. Xbox was the most technologically powerful between the three though.

The main reason that the PlayStation 2 creamed the Xbox to the extent that it did, I think, is because the PS2 just had a larger number of Triple A exclusives. I mean, sure, the Xbox had Halo, but the PS2 had Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Gran Tourismo, Sly Cooper and Grand Theft Auto just to name a few. In gaming, the console with the best games usually wins the day, and that was certainly the case in the 6th gen.

I don't say this as a knock against the Xbox, by the way. I had one myself, and some incredible games to go along with it (Halo 1 & 2, Fable, Star Wars:KOTR, etc.). Plus, when I was in high school Halo LAN parties were the big thing, and I loved going to those. Man, the more time the passes, the more I find myself missing the first half of the 2000's. :\'(

Yeah, I haven't actually played any of those PS2 exclusives besides Gran Turismo, and I loved all the Xbox exclusives, so I guess that's one reason I never understood, also GTA wasn't exclusive, was it?

My favourite game on the Xbox was/is Top Spin. I bought my pre-owned Xbox in 2009, for just $65 at a gaming shop in a local shopping centre. I still own the console, however it has been a long time since I last played it.

Technically no, GTA wasn't exclusive to the PS2, but the games were only ported to the Xbox several years after they came out (GTA III, for example, wasn't ported to the Xbox until 2003) so that was another area where the PS2 had a decided advantage.

Ah, I see, similar to Rise of the Tomb Raider last year or Oblivion in 06.

Top Spin? Sounds familiar, wasn't that a sports game? I think I remember seeing it at my local game/movie store around 10 years ago. Yeah, my mom gave my Xbox away to my cousin when we got a 360 after Christmas 2008, and I finally re-bought an original Xbox (also used) July, 2015.

Actually, there were some GTA games that were exclusive to Playstation consoles. Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories were the only 3D Universe games that were available on the PSP and PS2. They weren't ported to any other console throughout its release.

Top Spin was a tennis game, and a kickass one at that. It had some of the best graphics I'd ever seen back when it first came out. It's obviously dated a bit now, but still fun to play. Since you have an original Xbox again, if you ever come across that game at a flea market or something like that you should definitely pick it up. 8)

Yes, you are correct about Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories. I'd totally forgotten about those games.
