Subject: 15 Reasons 2009 Was The Year Everything Changed (In Music)

Written By: bchris02 on 11/28/16 at 6:11 pm

Here is an interesting article.  It also agrees with what I have long states, that 2009 (not 2008) was the year that everything changed in music.  By the end of '09, the '00s sound was pretty much gone aside from a few holdovers that came out in '10 and '11.

Despite defending 2009 so much, I could get why people would say this. When I started to listen to lyric videos on YouTube around 2007, it had the classic '00s feel. At the start of 2009, it started to get modern, but I didn't really care personally. It wasn't until late 2009 (at least) when I saw it becoming more like a new decade. It didn't feel like much until Rebecca Black became YouTube's enemy, so much so that she got so many dislikes on her original "Friday" video. However, that song was very popular towards young preteens at the time, even if it only lasted a year. I didn't really pay attention to today's music after 2011, but from what I heard, music started to increase over its saturation. So I think 2009-2011 was just the transition from 2000s to 2010s music.

I would say 2008 is the year everything changed, but 2009 continued on the change from 08' so that year was also pretty changeful as well. 2009 is the first year we started seeing the flat logo trend which still remains popular today. The electropop music that started in 2008 grew heavily in 2009. Windows 7 was released. Avatar was released as well. The fashion and attitudes started changing. The recession was in full force and the swine flu was all the talk. Pretty much all the stuff that was popular in 2009 we have some form of today. I remember 09' like it was yesterday, very nice year in my life.

I agree, overall.  :)

I was watching this earlier and when you get to 2009, you see how much the music sounds so different compared to the top 3 hits of 2007 and even 2008. That's why I think in the 2008 - 2009 period there was a huge shift in music and the top year end songs reflect that. 2009 starts around 8:34 in the video.

Come to think of it, 2009 really sounded different compared to the rest of the 2000s. Maybe it was because everyone usually had some sort of HD device at the time.
