Subject: Late 2006 is when TMZ mania started

Written By: the2001 on 02/03/17 at 2:54 pm

One of the first 2 really big scandals I can remember being  " TMZ worthy"
were Mel Gibson's outbursts in 2006 and Kevin and Brittney's split in Nov of 2006.

Anybody else agree this is when tabloids became the 1# thing in culture?

Late 2006 is when everything modern or sh*tty can be traced back to.

LOL, yes. By 2006, social media was huge.

On a twisted note, Britney Spears' breakdown provided Perez Hilton, TMZ, and other news sites, something to talk about. I guess in a way, Britney was just doing what a superstar does! Get lots of press! Unfortunately she lost her trust and innocence during those years. She paid a high price for getting so much attention!  :P

I also forgot, around 2003 to 2007 was the era of the bad girl. Lindsay Lohan, Britney, Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritche, etc, etc.
It was this unfortunate era that led us to Kim Kardashian today.

I don't know about TMZ's history, but all I know is that it started in late 2005.

I was more of an E! Weekly person from 2004-2008  :-[ :-[ Not that I liked it, but TV was still my main form of entertainment back then instead of the Internet, and that's all that was on ;D

All is fine, but what does TMZ mean?

Maybe TMZ. But tabloids and scandals have been around for a long time. The early 90s was a big time for that.  I think Court TV launch in 1991 had a lot to do with it.

The funny thing is, at some point TMZ became "legitimate" as a news source. Other  news sources would cite them, "according to TMZ..."

Not sure about TMZ, but celebrity obsession started earlier than that. It was all about who is getting married, who is having a baby, who split up, who was having a melt down, etc. Remember when Tom Cruise was jumping on the couch on Oprah?

I strongly believe Facebook was originally created to make people feel like celebrities. It's like they had their own personal paparazzi following their every move, especially relationship status changes.
