Subject: What year did the CORE 2000's end? (2006,2007 or 2008)

Written By: the2001 on 03/07/17 at 12:51 pm

What year would you say the core 2000's ended?
The core 2000's Zeitgeist is, Myspace.com. Aol Aim, Ring tone rap, Razr phone, Emo sub culture, surf culture ( Laguna Beach, THE OC).

There are alot of arguments on what year the core 2000's ended, some say 2006, 2007 or even 2008.

What does inthe00s think?

Roughly mid-late 2007, because that was about when social media and YouTube became roughly standard. Additionally, The Sopranos and the original Harry Potter book series ended, significant shows to the 2010s like Mad Men, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Phineas & Furb, and The Big Bang Theory made their debuts; the seventh generation of gaming firmly established itself with the flood of revolutionary titles released during the second half of the year, and the Great Recession was becoming much more evident. I felt more like I was in "the future" at this time than any other point in my life so far.

2013, when emo had the last nail on its coffin and most music started sounding awful IMO.

That's when 2000s influences in general ended.

I was a teenager from 2003-2009 I'd say it ended around late '07 to early '08.

Yeah, I would say Fall/Winter 2007-08 marked the end of the core 2000's. 2007 as a whole was the final year of the core 2000's. 2008 can't be considered as core 2000's because it was arguably quintessential to late 2000's culture and the culture was rapidly changing throughout the 2nd half of the year which brought in the first 2010's influences.

All of this couldn't have said it better than myself. 2003-2007 are the core 2000's years, but if we go by seasons then Fall 2003-Summer 2007 was the main duration of it.

To me, the core 2000s ended during the 2008-09 school year. By the end of 2009, we were already being expected with pop culture to somehow change.

2008 in general though was a transitional year. It could be true that late 2008 was kinda different compared to late 2007/early 2008, but it wasn't that different.

Late 2008 felt completely different than early and even mid 2008 lol I agree 100% Late 2008 had this dark/confusing futurstic vibe to it.
I would say late 03 started the core 2000s

Fall 2008.  Early 2008 wasn't that much different from 2007.  Note that I consider the "core 2000s" to have lasted slightly longer than the "classic 2000s" which I believe ended in fall 2006.

There simply wasn't much early '10s culture yet in 2007 at all.  The groundwork for it was laid in 2008 and it shifted into full gear in 2009.

I don't think there wasn't any sort of early 2010s culture by 2007. Sure there was the iPhone, but everyone at the time had either a Blackberry, flip phone, or a slider phone.

I'd say the core 00s ended roughly around the 2007-2008 school year. The 2006-2007 school year was the last one to feel fully "core" 2000s.

The movie's only roughly an hour long but if you're actually thinking about watching it, don't. It's complete crap. The plot's too flimsy and Aaron Eckhart gives his sh!ttiest performance.

For me the core 2000s ended in 2008. This is because the Great Recession took full effect and Barack Obama was elected President on November 4th, 2008. I turned 9 in 2008 and it definetly felt that the 2000s were gone, 2007 was the last core 2000s year, IMO. The core years of the 2000s were 2003/2004-2007.

I agree with this.  I personally thought the moderate economic improvement in 2010 was not going to last and we were going to go into a real depression sometimes between 2011 and 2013.  That would actually parallel what happened in the 1930s.  After the initial shock in late 1929, things did moderately improve very early in the 1930s before the bottom fell out.

Yeah, that sounds pretty accurate. 9/11 caused a huge changed politically. Culturally things changed had a different pace. Instead of culture changing into the core 2000s on Sept 11/12 to me Pop culture wouldn't change until we hit the peak of 2000s culture which certainly wasn't during 2000-early 2003.

You're like my brother, he can't remember much from before 2004/2005 (he's born 1994). But his first memory is from 1997.

I wish I had a memory of 1993 :(

;D I'm happy to be born in the early part of a decade instead of last.

I wish I was as well. I'm not sure if other people feel this way, but being born in the final years of a decade makes you feel older, even though you are aware of your age. For example, I know that I will turn 20 in March 2019, but it makes me feel old, because I was/am in my teens for the rest of the 2010s.

A lot of people born in 1999 could remember 2008. Hell, even I remember 2008 vividly.

Yep. I can remember 2003 vividly, let alone 2008!

Sometimes it is confusing to what "core" really means because the main identity of the 2000s was everything before 2006 in my opinion (especially the early 00s). If there was one year to really describe the 2000s it would probably either be 2004 or 2005, it definitely can't go after 2005. But 2008 was no doubt when everything changed and it was clear as day we weren't in the 00s anymore.

2004 and 2005 was what defined the 2000s most. DVDs were at its peak, while VHS tapes were still being produced. Windows XP was also more popular than 98, 2000, and ME, since it was around the time Service Pack 2 came out.

That seems surprising to me. I always thought those born before mid 1999 could remember stuff from 2001. But I guess since you were about 1 and a half in late 2001, it made a difference. To me, I never saw 2001 and 2002 differently. Even if I did remember 2001, it wouldn't really have any significance with my life.

I only have about two very vague memories from the year 2000. One memory I have (which is my clearest memory) was me walking into the kitchen from the loungeroom, but i tripped over the elevation of the kitchen tiles (the kitchen tiles were elevated higher than the loungeroom floor) and I landed face first onto the kitchen tiles. I actually killed off an incisor tooth (a front tooth in my upper row of teeth) and until I was 7, I had a "black" tooth. The roots in the tooth were killed off, so not only was the tooth black, but it was smaller than my other front teeth (because it had stopped developing). I know that the memory is from 2000, because my Dad was in the kitchen at the time and my parents divorced sometime in Late 2000/Early 2001.

My only other memory is just being in the backyard with my parents and eating a chip. :P I might be able to vaguely remember two more things, but I think they are just something I have imagined.

Well, it was a traumatic memory it seems. It would make sense for the brain to remember big events like that.

The brain remembers what is useful. The reason we don't usually remember ages 0-5 is because a lot of those things are no long useful to your adult self. But I think remembering not to fall flat on your face is definitely an important lesson for a life time. ;D

I do have a very early memory at age 2, in the Spring of 1991. I was at a place for new people in America. My family members were picking up clothes, we have just arrived in America three, to four weeks, before. My mother clarified my memory by admitting that it did happen. I don't really 'count' this memory with my family members as my first memory, because it's so blurry, and I had to get clarification from someone else, my mother. So it was a memory, but a very blurry one.

I can't imagine remembering anything before age 2.

It can be a false memory. I have a memory from age 2 of being angry at my mother being away at the hospital when she was pregnant with my brother, but my mom told me about it, which is why I don't think it's a real memory. But if you remembered that on your own, that's pretty impressive. :o

I remember my junior kindergarten classroom in 1996-1997 school year though, so the first memories that I can attach a date to are from when I was around 4. :)

We were learning our colours, and the teacher asked what object is coloured purple, and I said my shoes, but they were actually blue so the whole class laughed at me.  :-[ Then, another time, I was in a ball pit, a kid starting throwing balls at my head, so I tried to run away by climbing up the slides, but someone pushed me back in.  :\'( (my junior kindergarten building had a ballpit, but not senior kindergarten)

It can be a false memory. I have a memory from age 2 of being angry at my mother being away at the hospital when she was pregnant with my brother, but my mom told me about it, which is why I don't think it's a real memory. But if you remembered that on your own, that's pretty impressive. :o

I think most people remember a couple foggy moments from age 2. Age 1 is definitely a stretch though. I have like 2 or 3 memories from age 2. I think having photos or videos from the time also helps you remember.

To me, anything visual would help me remember something.

Me too. I can't believe that he can actually remember so far back in the his life. Damn, I thought I had a good memory but he beats me. I can't remember a single thing from 2000. Well, everybody is different.

Well it was a pretty bad experience. I can remember the pain from the fall and crying as a result of it. I think that incident is my only genuine memory from 2000.

My 6 year old self could probably remember a lot more details about my age 2-5 life than I could recall now as a 21 year old. The older you get, the more crystallized your memories become but at the same time your earliest childhood memories become more vague & blurry.

It's interesting that you should mention that. When I was 12-13 years old, I was able to vividly remember a lot of things from when I was a toddler and a young child. Now i'm 18 and in all honesty, most of my early childhood memories are blurrier than they used to be.

Same, very true.

Mid 2008 was the last time we were in the core 2000s period so that would be then end and the last full core 200s year would obviously be 2007 then.

I cannot remember my life before 2001. That was the year I immigrated to the USA with my family. It was February, and I was three, and we moved to San Diego, California and I lived with my cousins who were already past middle school. I remember that summer. Fear Factor was a hit so I recall watching it on the sofa in the living room at night with my family. I remember my older cousin playing on his PS2, and I was fascinated by him and kind of watching his social life. He graduated high school that year. I also remember Fourth of July that year and we were watching from a Mervyn's parking lot. I remember the backyard trees that bore fruit and we would harvest it, and the caged birds they had and I would always watch them. My grandmother was almost her in 80s and was having to deal with me, when I was quite cheeky. I remember she had a rocking chair and I would go and watch cartoons on it, and sometimes even wanting to play with her cane that she had around.

My dad had been living off of money from his sister in Northern California, and my mom had been from her sister whose house was the one we were staying at. My dad finally decided to look for a job somewhere in Los Angeles around August 2001 so we chanced it with the money we got and tried to find apartments to stay at. My dad was often declined since he was jobless at the time. We stayed in motels until we finally got an approval in September 2001, and moved into our first apartment. My grandmother stayed with us for a while since my parents were often away trying to hold their first jobs in America. My dad was working as a telecommunications contractor and my mother was working at a call center. I began kindergarten in  2002, and I remember going on field trips to museums and visiting the city zoo and going on subways.

So I have very fuzzy memories of then, and going to my first dentist and having a heavy vest put on me to hold me down and contain me because I was terrified by the dentist. My grandmother then left and we had a neighbor who happened to be a babysitter who would take kids in her apartment unit and watch them for an affordable price. My parents would pay for her to watch me and my sister on weekdays. I remember being lazy to walk there which was only a few minute's walk since it would have been very early in the day, before I went to school. It would have been barely sunrise and my parents would carry us with our blankets, and clothes in a bag. She was strict and I remember she would discipline me to take showers by myself since I was getting old enough. I would sometimes push her buttons because I was a picky eater, but she would pack me the best sandwiches to eat at school. My parents would come at nighttime to pick us up, and I would immediately get on the computer so I can play the computer games, usually some tycoon games, Sim City or The Sims. I would be so happy to play with my dad when he had the time off. I remember kindergarten, and we would go on field trips to the fire station, city zoo, stadiums, parks, museums and ride subway trains.

I remember Christmas 2002, and I lost my two front teeth that year and our class song was "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth".

We lived in LA from 2002 until late 2004 when we finally got our first suburban house in a developing suburban community (now big today) My paternal grandmother, not my maternal grandmother was younger, and would come to live with us at our new house. They lived in a domicile up until then near their work in Granada Hills which was a nursing and rehabilitation center. Oh, those were the days. I remember the new elementary school, and we had much less students in a class then the one I had in my old school. My granddad would always drop us off to school. It seems like yesterday that it happened.

2005-2006 seems not that long ago. 2001-2004 seems like ages ago to me.
1997-2000 was ancient times.  ;D

I would consider core 2000s to be 2005-2008. Shift in entertainment media, music and culture, the Internet became more influential, Wii and PS3 came, YouTube became a more popular community and outlet to share videos, and global recession the fluctuated the economy. The post 9/11 generation was on the rise.

The core 2000s were losing grip slowly in late 2006/early 2007

and The core 2000s were done by The Fall of 2008
