Subject: Are people finally realizing the 00s were more than just the late 00s?

Written By: Zelek3 on 03/30/17 at 1:36 am

Five years ago, when people mentioned the 00s on the Internet, they would usually insultingly, patronizingly associate them with Bieber, iPhones, Jonas Brothers, social media, Hannah Montana, and Obama - stuff that came out around 2006-2009, while the culture of 2000-2006 was either forgotten or lumped in with the 90s.

But recently seems like people are finally waking up and realizing that 2000-2006 wasn't part of the 90s, and the 00s weren't just Bieber, iPhones, Hannah Montana, and Obama.

Twitter recently did a "#WhatIMissFromthe2000s" trending hashtag, and to my relief, it was mostly 2000-2006 stuff; very little of that pesky 2006-2009 stuff.

I think you've got it the other way around. It's always the early 2000s that get the most mention, and that stretch of time is like 1999-2006 according to the Internet. The late 2000s are still mostly overlooked.

This isn't targeted at anyone, here, on this site. ;)

There needs to be groups on Twitter, so they can talk to me about the 2000s. I know DMs exist, but I'm not going to do that with them.

Nah. Early 2000s nostalgia is starting to peak, remember? Early and mid 2000s are linked to an extend. 2000-2004 and early 2005.

Back between 2011-2015 the years 2006-2009 (or even just 2008-2009) was the entire '00s to most people. Now that we're moving closer to the 2020s the late 1990s-mid 2000s are starting to pop up in the nostalgia for people. And people realize that things like smartphones didn't become popular until AFTER the 2000s ended, Social Media like Facebook or Twitter didn't take over until the very end of the 2000s, People still used Nokia or other Flipphones for most of the decade, the TV shows and games from the 2000s were actually decent and more.

Maybe.

If I think back of the 00s, the first half was very important. It also had a dark vibe, especially after 2001. I won't forget things like Linkin Park, Evanescence, Usher etc., the HP books and movies and LOTR of course. That I watched Cartoon Network until 2002, that I played Roller Coaster Tycoon and Age of Empires I and II (still occasionally though).

Also, Dexter's Lab is far more of a late 1990s show than a 2000s one, unless you really consider the mediocre CN Studios revival from the early 2000s on par with the show's Hanna-Barbera incarnation. They should've stashed Dexter Morgan in that collage instead.

Yeah, even the showrunner of the CN Studios episodes later joked about how he ran Dexter's Lab "into the ground".

His new show, the Loud House, is apparently good, so perhaps it was just a learning curve for him.

I think that collage was made for 2000s kid nostalgia. So I wouldn't think Dexter Morgan wouldn't be there. If it was made for drama shows from the 2000s, then I'm sure as hell that Dexter Morgan would've been there. Same for The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Lost, and many others.

The early 2000's era is just starting to gain nostalgia in the public eyes (that JG Wentworth boy band commercial, for example).

Yeah, 9/11 made things seem dark in terms of economics and politics (although then again I'd argue this was already in effect a few months prior to 9/11). Pop culture in the early 2000s was cheesy and wacky (and maybe a bit cringy). I mean look at this Donald Trump McDonalds commercial from 2002. It is just leaking with the cheesy/wacky vibe that was seen throughout a lot of 2002 commercials.

People are finally beginning to appreciate 2000-2006, but we need to make nostalgia for that era go more mainstream. F*ck the 90s and f*ck those corny Buzzfeed and Facebook articles about them,* 2000-2006 is all up in this b*tch.

2000-2006 is the greatest time period humankind has ever known, a genuine slice of heaven in yearly form.

Ok I was being kind of sarcastic when I said "genuine slice of heaven in yearly form."

I do know that for other groups of people, such as Iraqis, people who lost their families in terror attacks, citizens of New Orleans, or older Millennials who were drafted into Iraq, 2000-2006 was pure scorching hell. But for happy innocent kids like me, they were a great time.

Perspective matters.

All of that can be said for EVERY DECADE IN HUMAN HISTORY SINCE THE 1960s.

That commercial alone pretty much gives off the kind of feel that 2002 had. Nowadays people look at Trump as an extreme man who would push negative effects on the US. But back in 2002 he was too busy starring in funny commercials. In 2017 you only laugh at Trump because of some meme about him. In 2002 you laugh at Trump because he was actually funny.  8)

Pfft! You could bring that back to the 1930s or 1940s. I've seen old people who loved the 40s as a kid due to loving the golden age of comics and cartoons along with fun activities. But if you were older in the 40s you were too busy worrying about Holocaust or World War 2.

I would agree with this.  The late 2000s are lumped in with the '10s more often than the other way around.

I tend to emphasize the late 2000s as being '00s because I think that's where they belong.  I am one of the few that doesn't believe the '10s began in 2008.  Late 2008 started the transition to the true '10s, which had fully arrived by 2011.

The video below was from 2010, but seems very '00s.

The late 2000s definitely feel like their own thing, but it seems people lump them with the 10s. Maybe that'll change in the future.

I didn't really think that the true 2010's began until around 2012. I started to notice a change in music from the electropop era to the hipster indie era, and in around 2012, the problem with mass shootings seemed to have escalated even more.

More relief: when you type in "2000s tv shows" in Google, two of the top results are patrician choices That's So Raven, Drake and Josh, and Lizzie McGuire, as opposed to the plebeian Hannah Montana (which you have to scroll over a bit to get to). 8)

But wait, there's more!

If you type in "2000s cartoons" in Google, the top result includes patrician early 2000s shows like Invader Zim, as opposed to eye-melting garbage late 2000s like Fanboy and Chum Chum.

Thanks, Google. Thanks for having good taste and being lit af. 8)

Woah, you're kidding. You don't know who Rick Springfield is!? He sang Jesse's Girl! He is the definitive man of the 80's.
