Subject: 2009 Cultural Debate(was it more 00s or more 10s?)

Written By: Eazy-EMAN1995 on 04/16/17 at 2:35 pm

Well guys the moment we've all been waiting for. We decide ultimately was 2009 still apart of the 00s culture or was it apart of the 2010s cultural era?! :o

Well... I don't think it was precisely 2000s or 2010s. Most of 2009 felt like 2008 from my perspective. People were still excited about Obama, the Wii was a hot fad (I got it during the summer of '08), YouTube was like a cultural phenomenon and people were still worried about the economy. By late 2009 though, I felt like we were at a new decade. Thanks to Nickelodeon's new logo, I thought the channel was already done for. I still watched the channel for a couple years, but then I thought it wasn't the same anymore.

This is a solid assessment. 2009 felt like a mix of the 2000s but with hints of the future (2010s).

Well, we were at the end of the decade. Of course it just felt like a mix, much like 1999 was half 90s and half '00s. Although in a couple years, most people would think 2009 was the equivalent of a great '00s year. Even to people who were born in the late 90s/early 00s.

You know how most people see 1999 as a 90s year now? Well, that might change with 2009 for most people. Although 2009 might be more difficult to go through, since the year did have some futuristic differences.

Well yeah. 1999 is basically the easiest year to remember for all 90s kids, since that's when most 90s stuff was still around. 2009 could've been the same for the most part.

I think that it's mainly to do with the fact that most of the current "90s kids" nostlagia train is from people born 1990-1994 and they turned 5-9 years old in 1999. So they were in their core childhoods in 1999 and that's why I consider it more '90s and talk about it so much.

The first half of 2009 was sort of 50/50, the second half was leaning towards the '10s. Overall, I'd say it's closer to the '10s, but it is not so binary.

Welcome back by the way, again. ;D

Interestingly, I'm seeing more people born in 1994 call themselves 00s kids. Slowly but surely.

Nobody born before that calls themselves an 00s kid though. Especially not Slowpoke.

In my defence, while most my childhood did factually occur in the 2000s decade, I outgrew kiddy stuff around 2004, so 50-60% of the stuff "2000s kids" rave about I have no relation with, so I don't feel "part of the club".  :-X

But when you look at the aesthetic of late 2001-early 2004, and compared that to mid 2004-mid 2006, there does seem to be a noticeable shift, Imo. The mid 2000s just weren't as "wacky" and "off the wall" as the early 2000s.

The mid and late 2000s were way cooler than the early-mid 2010s by some parts. I don't know why the late 2000s aren't as cool as the mid 2000s to your case, but to each his own maybe.

Geopolitically, it's fairly 2010s, and some of the year's biggest hit singles are also quite 2010s, but on an overall cultural level, it's more 2000s. Too many factors work against it being '10s, from the iPhone's lack of mainstream dominance, to rock still producing lots of hit singles, to '10s fashion being far from establishment, to primary '10s television shows like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead not being on the air yet, to MySpace being relevant for the last time, to Gordon Brown still being the British Prime Minister, to the MCU still not being a done deal, it goes on. Even though the 2000s zeitgeist was completely and utterly worn out this year, the classic 2010s still had yet to really displace them. Finally, 2009 is chronologically a 2000s year, giving it an automatic advantage in that sense. 2010 felt quite different from 2009 as a whole, in my opinion. The entire year of 2009 is transitional, and pretty much represents the extremely brief "hybrid era" between the 2000s and 2010s in the Bush '41/Y2K fashion, but still the 2010s began on time.

That's hard to say.

Part of me wants to say November 9, 2016, because let's face it, that day shook the entire country and the world. The atmosphere was totally dead when I went outside that day. The hope and optimism of the Obama era were shattered like a mirror (though the cracks had already been building up for years up to that point).

But part of me could also say sometime in 2017. So far 2017 seems to have a more relaxed vibe than 2016.

Sort of, but that's not what her sentence seemed to indicate.

A lot of people merge part of the late 80s and part of the early 90s into a single 80s/90s hybrid era, with George H.W. Bush being the face of that period because as a cultural icon, he's hard to categorize between the two decades. In the same way, a lot of people categorize 1999 through September 10, 2001 as being its own in-between era, bridging the late 90s with the early 2000s. The year 2009 culturally bridges the late 2000s with the early 2010s in this same manner.

The 2000s/2010s hybrid era is much shorter than the 80s/90s and 90s/2000s hybrid eras because 2008 is significantly more 2000s while 2010 is tremendously more 2010s. On the other hand, late 1989 through the first half of 1991 are fairly even between 80s and 90s influences all the way, while the years 1999 and 2000, plus arguably the first half of 2001, are fairly evenly distributed between 90s and 2000s influences. The very beginning of 2009 was still extremely 2000s, but the end of the year was majority 2010s; I say the 2010s began on time because the margin of error is small enough that it's easiest to just go strictly by the chronological definition.

2011 seemed like the last "more 00's" year. By 2012 (where I live) I started noticing a shift that finally brought us in the decade. The year went basically from electropop to EDM, hipster indie, dubstep, race issues, and even more mass shootings (specifically the Colorado Theater and Sandy Hook shootings).

2012 seemed closer to 2013 and early 2014 than it did to 2011.

2014 is, in my opinion, the first year that feels remotely different from the 00's. ISIS, Elliot Rodger, Crimean Crisis, and I started to notice more fades, Aztec patterns, and tank top shirts.

2012 sucked because of those shootings. That, and George Zimmerman basically sparked the BLM movement as we know today.

The 80s/90s/00s were marked by similar cultural-chronological patterns. Ultimately, 2009-2012 can be viewed as being akin to the GHWB and Y2K eras. If you were to put a gun to my head, I'd say it leaned more 00s simply because 2009 ceased being relevant by the time the true 10s vibe kicked in circa 2013. Make no mistake, 2009 had far more in common with 2012 than 2006, but 2012 was pretty 10s while 2009 still had a lot of late 00s influences left over (Obama fever, state of the economy).

How was 2009 a "WORLD away" from 2007? Obamamania, the financial crisis, the novelty of Facebook, pre-iPad, pre-ACA, pre-Android surge in popularity all make 2009 quite similar to 2007-08.

There was a pretty big difference between the start of '09 and the end of it in terms of where we were culturally.  It's one of the most changeful years in my memory.  I would say by the end of '09, we were significantly more '10s than '00s.  At the beginning of the year it was a little more tricky.

"World away" was exaggerating a bit, but I think 2009 was quite different than 2007.  2007 was really the peak of all things '00s.  By 2009 most of those trends were still relevant but clearly on their way out.  '10s trends were starting to establish themselves and by that point it was more than just a hint. 2007 was the last year the economy was decent in the '00s and 2009 was its low spot.

So yeah, 2009 was different from 2007, but I wouldn't say it was "worlds away."

The late 2000s was a bit confusing for the most part. During 2007 and 2008, we still had George W. Bush as president. By 2009, we had Obama as president. Even though 2007-2009 is quite similar, they both seem a bit different in some ways. I feel like the early and mid 2000s were more consistent, since they had most of their culture being focused on TV and the use of broadband/dial-up Internet.

He meant that 1997 and 1998 were still core 90s, much like how 2007 and 2008 were core 2000s to his perspective.

OH OK, that's what I suspected he meant.

Not to me bruvver.

2009 and 2010 were closer on the timeline to 2011 (the first year of the 2010s), so those years felt a little bit more like '10s years than '00s years. 2009 and 2010 were still late '00s years.

How was 2009 a "WORLD away" from 2007? Obamamania, the financial crisis, the novelty of Facebook, pre-iPad, pre-ACA, pre-Android surge in popularity all make 2009 quite similar to 2007-08.

2007 the economy was still good, Bush and The Iraq war drama was still in its peak, 7th gen gaming was just starting to get popular, ringtone rap and post grunge were still the dominant genres of music, also we still had no MCU.
2009 saw Obama take office, electropop overtook rap and post grunge as the most dominat genre,  7th gen reached its all time peak imo, the premieres of Glee, Modern Family, NCIS LA, Good Wife, Vampire diaries, and The Middle. Twitter becoming popular, etc. May I go on.

There was a pretty big difference between the start of '09 and the end of it in terms of where we were culturally.  It's one of the most changeful years in my memory.  I would say by the end of '09, we were significantly more '10s than '00s.  At the beginning of the year it was a little more tricky.

I agree about the first half of 2009 being quite different than the second half. The first half to me wasn't too dissimilar to late 2007 though. Economically (start of the financial crisis) and technologically (iPhone, iPod Touch, Amazon Kindle, Facebook), 2007 was THE changeful year. The only thing significantly transformational about 2009 was Obama becoming president, but the start of the Obama era predated the formal inauguration. Besides, the early days of his presidency were defined by the "stimulus package" legislation in response to the economic fallout of 2007-08. His presidential legacy wouldn't begin until the following year with the passage of the ACA.

The iPhone was still a novelty in 2009. I don't recall any of my classmates owning iPhones when I graduated high school, and I went to high school in an upper middle class community in Los Angeles. Personally, from my recollection, iPhones weren't ubiquitous until 2012 or so.

Facebook had already overtaken Myspace when I started junior year in late 2007. It was still a pretty new thing in 2009 (remember status updates?).

The classic Razr was more of a 2004-2006 fad. A newer series, Razr2, was introduced in the summer of 2007 and discontinued in late 2009.

Electropop may have been mainstream, and a great deal of the years biggest singles definitely fit under the early '10s category ("I Gotta Feeling," "Bad Romance," "Poker Face," "Just Dance"), but most hits from 2009 were still either stylistically more late 2000s or only on the cusp of bing 2010s-esque.

Here are just a few examples of big hits from 2009 that, I think, are much more 2000s than 2010s:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-pUaogoX5o

The iPhone was not really that popular yet in 2009. App culture had not yet taken over the world like it would by 2010/2011.

Avatar was still in theaters for a lot of 2010, but it doesn't necessarily fit squarely into the 2010s category because CGI sci-fi blockbusters were hardly a new thing at the time, and few films this decade have really tried to mimic the movie's look and themes. You could make an argument for how much it popularized 3D IMAX moviegoing experiences, but it still doesn't reek of 2010s the way something like The Avengers, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, or Tangled does.

Agree with this completely.  2009 was a big year for music and it's evolution from '00s to '10s, but there were a lot of '00s sounding stuff popular that year.

Probably the most obvious, in addition to the ones you posted, is this one.  It could have also been popular as far back as 2002.

It was more 00s than ever. Yes, I agree that it was somewhat 10s; however, let's be honest, it was truly more in tune with the previous era. Obama didn't have any power that year despite being president. Most folks still had regular cellphones although there was the T-mobile sidekick, HTC G1, and the early iPhones. Digital cameras, Ipods, Camcorders, and DVDs (before Blu-ray took off) were still common. Social media was truly bound to Myspace, AIM and Facebook (which was really different compared to today). Fashion was more than just emo, and there were still plenty of non-electropop songs.

I personally think 2009 was the perfect mixture of both 2000's and early 2010's culture.

Things that make it more like the early 2010's:
-We got new artists like Lady Gaga and Drake who influenced the music industry
-Electropop was a popular music genre
-The recession was at its worst
-Obama was president
-HDTV was popular
-Having iPhones slowly started becoming more common by the very end of 2009 despite the majority of people still using Blackberry phones then
-Facebook and Twitter became popular

Things that make it more 2000's:
-The fashion was still primarily Emo/Scene
-Digital cameras were still very common
-The first iPad wasn't out yet
-Despite electropop being popular, the other music genres, like R&B and rock, were still heavily 2000's influenced
-Speaking of rock, it was still somewhat of a popular music genre in 2009
-Early 2009 was the last hurrah for MySpace
-Blackberries were still common
-Having an iPod Nano was still common

I'm surprised that 2000s won that poll. I voted 2010s, but it was iffy, but now that more time has passed since Obama being president, I more firmly believe that 2009 is very much a "2010s year" in all but name.

Even though I said 2009 was the perfect mixture of both 2000's and early 2010's culture, I think I'd have to say it leans very slightly early 2010's. The hip-hop from then sounded drastically different from the hip-hop of 2008. It's weird how much only a year difference can make.

I would consider it more 00s although there’s no denying that a lot of what we have now started then. But for normal people who can’t afford new and expensive stuff (cough-iPhones-cough) it was still very 00s. I’d say it was mostly 00s until around 2011 when real 2010s culture took off.
I have no idea who these people are and these are just random videos I found but you can see how everyone still looked VERY 2000s.

-The recession was at its worst IMO the recession is seen as more late 2000s than early 2010s, with 2008 probably just as bad, if not worse than 2010-11.
-Obama was president
-HDTV was popular IMO HDTV is to the 2000s to what color TV is to the 1960s. HD actually began being broadcast on a few shows in the late '90s just like a select few shows were broadcast in color in the late '50s, but color TV didn't start to really be the standard until around 1969, just like how in June 2009 HD became the standard. There were still some shows broadcast in non-HD into the 2010s just like a few black/white shows were around into the '70s.
-Having iPhones slowly started becoming more common by the very end of 2009 despite the majority of people still using Blackberry phones then This was actually the case in late 2007 and 2008, and was a transition that didn't seem complete until 2012 or so. Even flip phones were still somewhat common as well.
-Facebook and Twitter became popular Facebook became popular first, around 2007. 2009 though was the year of Twitter's breakthrough.

Things that make it more 2000's:
-The fashion was still primarily Emo/Scene
-Digital cameras were still very common
-The first iPad wasn't out yet

This I agree with, along with TV shows like The Office, American Idol, Hannah Montana, and Avatar: The Last Airbender still on the air, and streaming services on TV not yet a thing. Hulu was around, but it basically was very primitive and didn't offer any original programming yet. But it really was transitional as social media was pretty much a way of life by this point.

Yeah, and Hannah Montana is an early 2010s show too.

Breaking Bad, a show commonly associated with the 2010s, was huge in 2009. You also had shows like Glee, Community, Big Bang Theory, Mad Men, and Vampire Diaries.

Paris Hilton was no longer the big reality star of the day. It was all about the Kardashians and Snooki.

Overall, if you asked me if 2009 is an extension to the 2002-2008 era or is the beginning of the 2010-2016 era, I'd throw it in the latter without hesitation. Yeah, many trends from the previous years were still hanging on and the gives the first half of the year a late 2000s feel, but many of these trends were gone by the end of the year which shows how stale they were getting.

Didn't Drake and Josh also end in 2008 (but in December of that year), but with a movie?

Hannah Montana aired from 2006 to 2011. How is it an early 2010s show ????

2010/2011 aren't early 2010s?

Add to that that 2009 is an early 2010s year too lol

I personally think 2009 was the perfect mixture of both 2000's and early 2010's culture.

Things that make it more like the early 2010's:
-We got new artists like Lady Gaga and Drake who influenced the music industry
-Electropop was a popular music genre
-The recession was at its worst
-Obama was president
-HDTV was popular
-Having iPhones slowly started becoming more common by the very end of 2009 despite the majority of people still using Blackberry phones then
-Facebook and Twitter became popular

Things that make it more 2000's:
-The fashion was still primarily Emo/Scene
-Digital cameras were still very common
-The first iPad wasn't out yet
-Despite electropop being popular, the other music genres, like R&B and rock, were still heavily 2000's influenced
-Speaking of rock, it was still somewhat of a popular music genre in 2009
-Early 2009 was the last hurrah for MySpace
-Blackberries were still common
-Having an iPod Nano was still common

I think 2009 is definitely more 2000s with the reasons you listed

2009 has and will always feel more '00s to me.

I did remember that change was on the horizon with Obama coming into office and a change in the vibe and feel of the country but overall, 2009 was more '00s than '10s, IMO.

This video shows that 2009 is more '00s than '10s:

earlier it felt 2010's to me. But looking back now it looks like a very 2000's year trying desperately to appear different from the rest of the 2000's in terms of its pop culture.

I would actually have to disagree with some of the changes you made. I'm not sure if it's different where you live, but here in the United States iPhones weren't really common in late 2007 as it was barely out and not to mention the recession started in December 2007, which is one of the reasons why people either stuck to their flip phones or blackberries. Myspace was still at its peak in 2007 and Facebook, while available to the public, was still hardly known and you were in the minority if you had one. From my memory, Facebook started getting popular in late 2008 and a year later it was pretty much the new in-thing and Myspace was dying quickly.

This is just based on where I live though. I haven't been outside the U.S before.

Not really. Not a lot of people that I knew at the time had a Facebook account. It wasn't until 2008/early 2009 when a lot of people where I live started to use Facebook.

Well maybe your class, but that doesn't mean everyone was using Facebook. Myspace was still frequently used up until mid-late 2008, much like you said.

What about that video is supposed to 2000s? I see/heard Taylor Swift, Drake, Obama, Zuckerberg, Lady Gaga, tons of electropop, Community, Avatar and 7th Gen video games. That more cemented in my mind that it was an early 2010s year.  :-X

Facebook was popular 2006/2007, it took until 2009 (hey there's that year again) to surpass MySpace in the US though.

I’d say 2009 was culturally more 2010s. Obama, Facebook, Twitter and even the technology are all what made 2009 more like an early 2010s year.

To be honest, I can really see both sides of 2009 being more 2000's or early 2010's. The poll results are quite interesting because even though most people say that 2009 is more 2000's, the number of people who think it belongs with the early 2010's is only a number behind. I think 2009 was both 2000's and early 2010's, but starting to lean early 2010's by the end of that year going into 2010. I'd say early 2009 leaned very slightly 2000's, with the Spring and Summer of 2009 being 50% 2000's and 50% early 2010's. By the fall of 2009, early 2010's culture was clearly taking over.

So is 2018.

2018 has been a little bit depressing so far. 17 people were killed in Parkland and Stephen Hawking died. :(

More like 2010's. Here's a post I made on Rainbowz's "Do you think 2009 was more 2000's or early 2010's culturally?" thread on Personality Cafe.

More like 2010s...

Obama was president and Facebook became mainstream. Around '08 & '09, everything from the 2000s was dying and the new stuff coming out at the time was staying for the 2010s.

Glad my alt accounts put the 2010s option over the edge.

I used my alt accounts to rig the "2007-2008 school year" thread poll too.

I still don't believe that 2009 was more '10s. I believe that 2009 was about 55-60% 2000s and 40-45% 2010s culturally.

*Games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed II, Left 4 Dead 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Borderlands, GTA: Chinatown Wars, etc are more 2000s to me than 2010s.

However, if you guys feel otherwise, I don't really care because this doesn't matter.

Is there a voting option for I don't think so?

That answer wouldn’t make sense with this kind of question

2009 was in the middle leaning more towards the 2010s. Barack Obama was president, the Great Recession had really taken its effect, the materialism of the 2000s was gone, we had Proposition 8 and gay marriage getting a lot of attention, everything was becoming less homophobic. In terms of Pop Culture, we were transitioning into the Disney Revival Era, movies such as the Dark Knight and the Hangover had been released, there was the switch to Digital TV, electro-pop and EDM were significantly bigger compared to the previous couple years, Indie music was more popular. This was also the first year when HD was fully standard, also Facebook and Twitter were already pretty big. There are some things that make 2009 2000s, such as Smartphones not being big yet, apps not really being a thing yet, Windows XP being popular, Emo and Post-Grunge being sorta popular still, Glam Rap was still holding on, Hipsters not being that big yet, being before the 3D movie craze, a lot of big 2010s shows hadn't premiered yet and probably other things.

I was just listening to songs from 2009 and I was a bit surprised but at the same time not surprised because nearly all of them sound like they're from the early 2010's. Then I listened to songs from 2008 and the majority of them still had that late 2000's sound. Even the pop and hip-hop from 2008 sounded noticeably different from the pop and hip-hop of 2009 IMO. Music-wise, I think 2009 had more in common with 2010 than it did with 2008 despite the two years being the same distance from 2009.

I was only 4 back then, but I remember watching Youtube videos from the time (I have a brother who's a lot older,) and it definitely looks more 2000s.  2009 songs don't really sound 2010s to me.  The fashion is very 2000s.  I think it's a 2000s year - the year, based on what I've read, seen, and remember, where it started to look like the 2010s was around... 2012-2013.  2010 and 2011 still looked and were very 2000s in terms of culture.

Yup! 2009 was the year my family upgraded the living room TV to a flat screen and got a Blu-Ray player. We still had about three CRTs being used for watching TV so we had to get some converter boxes. ;D We only had satellite TV then.

Most people recognized a noticeable shift by the time 2009 came around. The changes of 2008 (electropop, Obama, economic collapse) were in full swing by then. But now looking back from the eyes of 2018, it's hard to pinpoint 2009 and even 2010 as mostly 00's or 10's. 07/08 and 11/12 are pretty easy to sum up, but 2009/2010 are kind of blurry. The year 2005 is about as definitive of a 00's year as it gets -- pop punk, crunk rap, emo, Bush W., Myspace, Iraq War, etc. But it felt rather brief and the push towards electronic music would slowly appear in each year after. Myspace would definitely fall out of popularity after 2007.

With the exception of electropop and President Obama, the 10's weren't very strong in 2009 either. iPhones were out of reach for most and the fashion was distinctly late 00's. For guys at least, 2010's hairstyles and fashion would've brought ridicule in '09 and even 2010-11. Skinny jeans were for hipsters. At the same time, Justin Bieber's haircut from 08-11 would look crazy today.

If there was one year that is most comparable to 2009, it would be 1981. On the 80's side of '81, you had a brand new president, increasing popularity of New Wave, and the introduction of MTV. On the 70's side of '81, you had an awful economy, tons of late 70's fashions/hairstyles/technology, and last gasps of late 70s soft rock and disco. VCR's (80's) were technically available, but extremely expensive. Sounds familiar? (hint: iPhones)

I actually bought my first pair of skinny jeans in spring 2009. At the time it was definitely considered strange, people would say "Skinny jeans? Really?" but by the end of the year I think it was very common. :P

While the undercut wasn't popular yet, it was definitely there. A lot of the styles were popularized by the airing of Mad Men in 2007. But the most popular hairstyle from what I remember was where you'd spike the hair on top and keep the sides short. I consider that a proto-undercut and it's still a popular style today.

In my opinion, it was really more 2000's probably because smartphones were irrelevant at the time even though there were some users at the time, I had never seen one until late 2010.

2009 was really the last year before smartphones were so relevant at least for me.

The 90s weren't strong at all in 1999, 90s culture had been on the wane for a couple years before 1999 and it didn't look that different from the early 2000s. 1979 still seemed a bit 70s despite, some 80s stuff starting to pop up. 1989 looked a lot more 90s than 1987 and 1988 did but, it was still mostly 80s. 2009 also seemed a bit more 10s in my opinion. It didn't seem different at all from 2000 and pre 9/11 2001, I will admit there were some changes such as Hip Hop gaining a little bit more traction, reality TV being bigger, the dot-com bubble burst and George W. Bush being elected but, overall didn't seem that different at all. Late 2001 - 2003 was quite different though.

This song is a perfect example of 2009 -2011 Auto Tune and the Classic 2000s (2001-2006)  R&b sound  blending together,
as soon as 2009 hit you got more auto tune with new faster BPM and less of that classic 2000s sound

2008 was a half and half year, first half was more 2000s until like September when Original TRL ended, GAGA debuted along with Katy Perry (early 2010s staples) Toonami ended, and a bunch of other 2000s staples ended,  by the time we got to 2009 it felt like a different world so 2009 I would say yeah was a BETA 2010s year.

I was too young in 88 to even know at the time if it was, but from what I saw most 90s things started around the time Married with children aired on Fox for the first time.

That’s the one I mentioned. The classic 2000s were from like January 1st of 1999 to November 15th of 2001. Bush 43 was in office for most of 2001, but the tabloids would not let go of Bill Clinton until around the winter of ‘01.

Come on dude, first off 1999 isn't even a part of the 2000's but also, why would you even say that considering most of the members here don't even use your wierd/obscure definition of the "classic 2000's"?

It’s not 2000s to you because it’s 90s in name. 1999 was the first year that 1989 was officially old in. Look at the TV show premieres of ‘99 and you will see what I’m talking about.

He also thinks that 1978 is part of the 80's.

It was the first post-1977 and pre-1990 year. That alone qualifies it as an 80s year. I’m sorry you were not there to see it.

Not to sound rude, but if you were born in 1977, there's absolutely no way you can remember the differences between 1977 and 1978.

I can look at the historical events and pop culture of both years and spot the differences between ‘77 and ‘78. 1977 was the last year of the 70s because it was final time that people planned for the 1980s. The general population did not know that at the time. While we were living in them, 1978 and 1979 were “70s years” to us. That’s only because most of the world goes by calendars.

Ages are rarely (if ever) a period of ten years.

I've stopped paying attention to this nonsense. "1977 was the last year of the 70s because it was final time that people planned for the 1980s." What on God's Green Earth does THAT mean? I hate to pull rank but enough is enough. I was there you were not (being two years old doesn't count, I'm afraid). The cultural 80s clearly began in 1981. We felt it culturally, we felt it viscerally. WE KNEW. You may look at "historical events and pop culture " but they do not tell the whole story. Not by a long shot. I mean, we've got people on this board actually claiming that "Alf" was some kind of cultural touchstone for God's sake. Is that what history has left us? Heaven help us all.

In my opinion:

50's: 1946-1961
60's: 1962-1971
70's: 1972-1980
80's: 1981-1990
90's: 1991-2000
2000's: 2001-2011
2010's: 2012-present

I'd put the beginning of the cultural 60s at 1964 (after the assassination of JFK and the arrival of the Beatles) even though seeds were sewn before. The 60s definitely extended to the end of 1972 at which point they just petered out.

Here are the reasons why 1962 is 60's, not 50's:

*Dr. No started the spy movie trend.
*The whole "malt shop" thing seemed to be declining that year.
*Doo-wop was past its peak.
*The Cuban Missile Crisis was one of the most defining events of the 60's.
*Even though the British Invasion took place in 1964, The Beatles started making music in 1962.
*1962 had the rise of surf rock music.

I’ll give you an example of what I’m talking about. In mid 1977, after the massive success of Star Wars, George Lucas told LA Times that he would not be directing the Star Wars sequels. Any pop culture fan reading that page of the LA Times newspaper was able to predict what the 80s were going to be like from there. Their presumption was correct…

The 80s: The time of extensions to the 1977 box office hit “Star Wars (The Holiday Special, spin-off Marvel comic and two sequel films), the rest of the Jaws movie series (Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D, and The Revenge), Close Encounters of the Third Kind type features, and dance fad pics like Saturday Night Fever.

The 90s: The period of the first ever Batman sequel (Batman Returns), first ever threequel (Batman Forver), first ever fourth part to a Batman movie series (Batman and Robin), Jean-Claude Van Damme action flicks, Wes Craven horrors, and Disney renaissance films.

The 00s: The age of Adam Sandler comedies, Ben Stiller comedies, Pixar shows, the last two Blade films (Blade 2 and Trinity), and the final two Rush Hour Movies (Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3).

The 10s: The years of the other Despicable Me films (Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 3), motion pictures made by Christopher Nolan, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in the MCU movies.

I hate to pull rank but enough is enough. I was there you were not (being two years old doesn't count, I'm afraid). The cultural 80s clearly began in 1981. Because not everybody lives pop culture. To use your own example, not everybody in 1977 was walking around thinking about "Star Wars". I never even saw it. Still haven't. Couldn't have cared less what "Star Wars" or George Lucas was doing as the 70s became the 80s in 1981.  But "Star Wars" was certainly huge, so it's an example of "History is written by the victors" if you think it had something to do with the 70s becoming the 80s.

More like a "decadeology" message board.  ::) Half the posts made in the last page of this thread are all decadeology-related (i.e 1999 being a "2000s" year).

Anyway, to get back on topic, I think 2009 was a 2000s cultural year.

Yes, let’s back on topic. 2009 was a 2000s cultural year. 2010s culture came out of each year of the 2000s. Glee, Modern Family, and  Jersey Shore were all popular TV shows at the very start of the early 2010s and those TV shows premiered on TV on different dates in 2009. 2009 was the second year of the late 2000s. That should end the debate.

2009 was an early 2010s year end of debate:

- TRL was off the air and it its place It's On With Alexa Chung ( A crappy re tool)
-  Justin Beiber debuted late that Aug
- Jersey Shore a cultural early 2010s show debuted that December in 2009
- Kesha Debuted that November
- Lady Gaga was a house hold name by this point and one of the biggest singers since Britney Spears
-  Electropop was officially the dominate genre, with hits by Black Eyed Peas Boom Boom Pow and others
- Myspace's final full year it was used by Mainstream
- Facebook overtakes myspace in 2009 to become the biggest website
- Youtube debuts new logo
-Vevo debuts that December
- Nick changes its logo
-  Clash of 2000s fashions vs early 2010s fashions, it was clear 2010s was gearing up fast
- Windows 7 Debuts
- Playstation 3 overtakes xbox 360
-Final year of gadzooks
-final year of KB toys
-final year of Waldenbooks
- Final year of Circuit city
- First full year Obama is in charge of
- First full Toonami less Cartoon network year since 1997

2009 gave us the last hand-drawn non-white Disney princess (Tiana from The Princess and the Frog). Millennials would argue that Mulan had the better soundtrack, but The Princess and the Frog tracklist included a song by Ne-Yo (who Gen Zers loved at the time).

I’m sorry, John, but 1998 (the year of the 90s that felt most like a Y2K era year out of them all) would not be completely old until 2011. Therefore, 2011 is the first ever early 2010s year.

2009 was the first 2010s year, it was a beta 2010s year, as I have described in 2009

- Most classic 2000's stores ended their run
- TRL not on the air anymore
- Toonami done
- Bush gone  Obama in his place
- Music getting more electropop while the typical 2000s music was getting phased out
- Emo died out in 2009
-  Was a struggle between 2000s and 2010s fashions
-  Facebook overtakes myspace as being more popular (DespiteFacebook catching on in early 2007)
- Vevo debuts, a staple for the 2010s
- Jersey Shore debuts, a staple for the early 2010s
- 3D Imax movies become huge with Avatar
- Kesha debuts
-Windows 7 debuts

^^^ these are all reasons alone that 2009 is a 2010s year

The prince and the frog was a failure, it got almost not air play for commercials and it is the reason why Disney has not done a 2d movie since.
2009 did not feel very 2000s, the only people who say that on here were babies in 2005 and are looking at pics in 2009 and see the fashions look the
same, but not realizing that the mood was completely different, and that those fashions were being phased out rather quickly.

I am going to say this again to anyone who was a baby or a pres schooler between 2004-2006,  Pictures of 2009 look the same fashion wise but the mood was different at the time, the pictures can't really capture the despair that was in the air due to the economic crash. I am noticing people who were toddlers then mistaking pictures from that year as having the same vibe as the 2000s, do not be fooled.
