The video that launched the career of the first major "YouTube celebrity", the Angry Video Game Nerd. I still remember watching this one for the first time like it was yesterday. It was summer 2006, and I had only been going on YT for about six months when my cousin emailed me a link to this video saying, "Remember that TMNT game we hated as kids? Apparently we weren't the only ones!"

These days, with the AVGN having been around for a decade and the internet filled with thousands of imitators, it's kinda hard to forget how revolutionary this video seemed to us back in 2006. Everybody that played the first TMNT game on the NES growing up hated it because of how ridiculously hard it was, but it used to be something that we only talked about amongst ourselves. Now all of sudden there's a dude on YouTube making videos yelling and screaming and cussing about how much that game sucked, allowing us to vent our frustrations from 15 years past? Awesome! 8)

I think this was really the first video I saw that showed me the breadth of what YouTube could really do. I had never really considered the idea of posting comedic reviews of video games on the internet before 2006, and now that's what comprises about 50% of all online videos. ;D

Also, remember the days of 240p resolution and a video getting 1 million views being a HUGE deal? I love early YouTube! 8)

Show Me Your Genitals and how everyone played it/posted the lyrics on Counterstrike all the time.

Wow, there's something from late 2006-2009 that Max/Zelek3 likes ::). I'm surprised.

Man, I would like to; however, unfortunately over the years, I forgot most of the video titles, and that they could have been deleted overtime.

Pretty much all of James Rolfe's videos. I miss when he was known as The Angry Nintendo Nerd. Now it's Cinnemassacre. When he was first working with Spike he kind of went away for awhile. Not releasing as many videos. I finally got back into him. Though his videos are now more serious than funny. Also when people would mimic music videos. Back when people didn't change the song titles and words, Weird Al style. These people that do that now with their annoying outfits, they just give me a big headache. Even if they don't change the title they would be sh!t now! But back then peeps were really good at looking the same, down to the hair and make up. The sets, scenes and dances were close if not exactly the same. Those were the best. I'll find a few and post them here.

And The Evolution of dance! Part 2 wasn't as good. I loved watching dance videos. Performances at school with teachers and students were always cool.

And remember the pre-google and pre-vevo days? Now we get ads and people getting their awesome videos taken down over copywrite crap. Back in 2005 this wasn't a big issue. So many song covers were made by people with amazing voices and now they're gone cause of the new rules. I know it started quite a long time ago but the video site was so much better back then and fun. We could all have nice convos and now there is either spam or someone b!thing in the comments. Remember status updates? Or having profile design options? Those were the days.

I don't mean to get off topic but these were things that destroyed the tube.

I cut it off in 2009 because Late 2009 is when YouTube replaced stars with likes and got a new look that was a drastic departure from any of their 2005-Early 2009 looks.

It still wasn't that bad since people weren't forced to use Google+ at the time. In fact, Google+ didn't even exist back in 2009.

2005-2008*

2005-2008*

pre-HD YouTube

I'd say 2005-Mid 2009 because YouTube underwent a big layout change in late 2009, where they replaced stars with likes, changed the positioning of various objects, and overall "slicked up" the place.

Extremely NSFW language but this was far and away my favorite early YouTube viral video:

Also, in 2006 I sneaked my digital camera into the freight terminal I was working at so I could get some video of the dock janitor...doing his thing.  :D

Man, there was a really sweet fanmade video of a cartoon couple back in 2008. I don't know if it got taken down by copyright or by the user, but I can't find it any more ;(

Remember those creepy ass videos. The 666 channels etc. I know some of it's still there but back in the day they were more strange and down right creepy. I'm a Horror and Gore fan but damn some of that sh!t even creeps me out.

And I haven't actually been on the dark web. I know how to get there and what all precautions to take. But I'm worried someone will bypass it and find me and do who knows what to me. Well to this day some people still post videos about that place and even some clips and images. I'm thankful I have the tube for it cause I doubt I will take the actual dive myself.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one who remembers Super Mario Bros. Z. Yeah, it was more of a Newgrounds thing, but me and most people I know first got exposed to it on YouTube in 2006-07. This show really marked the height of the "flash video series" era, and it kicked ass! 8)

I used to watch the entire series when I was 8 and 9. I was really pissed when Alvin Earthworm didn't make the 9th episode, since that was when Mario got his ass kicked by Basilix (the dark Koopa Troopa captain from the show).

I still want Google to revert YouTube back to its classic layout in April. If not this year would be a missed opportunity.

I don't think it will go back to the original format.
