Subject: Remembering 2002

Written By: mach!ne_he@d on 06/01/17 at 12:03 pm

Well folks, the Remembering series has returned again, this time to take a look back at 2002. What better way to celebrate the 15th anniversary of this momentous year than by taking a look back at the moments that defined 2002.

2002

The shadow of September 11, 2001 still hung over the United States in 2002, with the cleanup of Ground Zero continuing until May 2002. The first anniversary on September 11, 2002 is a huge event in America. An already shaken country is further impacted by the D.C. Sniper Attacks throughout 2002. The two snipers would kill 10 people before finally being caught. George W. Bush and his administration began it's push to go to war against Iraq in 2002, with Bush laying out his case against Iraq in a speech before the United Nations in September 2002. Also, Indonesia is rocked by a bombing at a nightclub in Bali, which kills over 200.

2002 was a major year for movies. 8 Mile, Minority Report and Gangs of New York were smash hits, Harry Potter and Men in Black both got major sequels, The Lord of the Rings trilogy continued, Scooby Doo came back, and Lilo & Stitch proved that Disney could still make a great movie, and gave '00s kids perhaps their most iconic film of the decade. The main story, of course, was the popularity of Spider-Man, which helped launch the comic book movie fad that would dominate the next two decades.

The Music

Music was clearly in transition in 2002, as the Y2K era was beginning to close out, but any artists and genres from that period remained dominant. Rock music was still dominated by Nu Metal and Post-Grunge, but the rise of groups like The Strokes and The White Stripes in 2002 signaled the beginning of the Garage Rock Revival. Though it actually came out in 2001, How You Remind Me ruled the radio in 2002, and was the last rock song to be the Billboard #1 song of the year. Also on the rock front, The Middle by Jimmy Eat World becomes a huge hit in 2002, brining Emo to the mainstream. Nelly and Eminem were arguably the two biggest Hip-Hop acts of the year, while Ja Rule enjoyed 2 songs in top 15, partnering with Ashanti and Jennifer Lopez. Neither N*SYNC nor the Backstreet Boys have any songs in Billboard Top 25 this year, signalling that Y2K era Teen Pop is on the decline. Vanessa Carlton and Avril Lavigne both enjoy breakout hits in 2002 as well with A Thousand Miles and Complicated.

The Sports

2002 began with perhaps the greatest Super Bowl of all time, with the New England Patriots stunning the 14 point favorite St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, beginning the Patriots Dynasty. Meanwhile, the Shaq-Kobe Los Angeles Lakers win their 3rd consecutive title by sweeping the New Jersey Nets in the NBA Finals. The Miami Hurricanes domination continues in 2002, winning the national championship in January at the Rose Bowl, and then continuing the next season undefeated. Barry Bonds finally makes it the World Series in 2002, only to be stunned by the Anaheim Angles. Also in sports, Maryland wins the NCAA Tournament, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dominant defense begins it's 2002 campaign.

The Video Games

The 6th generation of consoles had reached it peak by 2002, and that was clear in the amount of blockbuster games we saw that year. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City proved that the series had staying power, Metroid Prime revived the Metroid series for the first time since the SNES, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 was the best game yet in that series, and Super Mario Sunshine lived up to the expectations of being the first new Mario game in 6 years. The surprise of the year was certainly Kingdom Hearts, though, which defied everybody's expectations to become perhaps the best game of the year.

This is the year the center of my childhood really took off like a gun pow. This year had such a golden vibe for all kinds of pop culture. One of the most easy and relaxed years of my life. Kindergarten, Summer 2002, 1st grade, 2002 UGA and Falcons, TV, gaming, etc. being age 6 at the time, it doesn't get any better than that. I'll explain how much I enjoyed this year later today.

2002 movies that I loved (and still love) growing up:
1. Spider-Man
2. 8 Mile
3. XXX
4. Men in Black II
5. Ice Age
6. Scooby Doo (guilty pleasure :-

I played the heck out of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 growing up with my cousin and his friend (both were born in 1996) growing up. Albeit, we played Vice City during 2005-2007 and I was 6-8 then (way too young to be playing any GTA game ;D)...ahh so many great memories.

However, let's not forget these 2002 games:

1. Battlefield 1942
2. Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
3. Mafia
4. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
5. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
6. Rachet & Clank
7. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
8. SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs

Britney Spears was named 'most powerful celebrity' in 2002, by Forbes Magazine. This, to me, symbolized the peak of her career. Unfortunately, after this Forbes magazine announcement came the infamous Justin/Britney breakup. She was definitely on top of the mountain in early 2002.

I totally agree. Even though I turned 15 that year, 2002 was still an awesome time. Life was simpler, even though I know that sounds corny to say. Most kids didn't have cell phones, and the internet was still something of a luxury. Even MP3 players were something that only well off kids had. I have so many fond memories that year of watching music videos on MTV and BET with my buddies, playing Grand Theft Auto III and Super Mario Sunshine, and even being first exposed to the concept of a LAN party at my cousin's house. And yeah, like you mentioned, following the epic undefeated season of the Georgia Bulldogs was awesome as well.

I remember 2002 quite well. I moved into a house from an apartment building and it was really cool because the house I moved into was big and we were playing hide and go seek in it the first time we moved in. I started grade 2 that year as well. Lizzie McGuire and Even Stevens were really big and I remember watching those shows. I also watched the Spider Man movie as well. 2002 was one of my favourite years of the 2000s and there were a lot of nice memories from that year. I feel like 2002 was the last truly old 2000s year before the mid 2000s trends started coming in '03. 2002 was also the last year before I started using a search engine (Yahoo.com in 2003 and Google in 2004). I went to the internet to play kids games and browsed some sites, but search engines were not that popular at this time.

I can relate to a bit of this. Super Smash Bros. Melee and Freekstyle were the only games we had at the time with Melee being the main focus. The vibe was also to restate, really positive. 2002, definitely the peak of the Early 2000s.

The internet honestly wasn't a luxury at this point... My family certainly was not well off in 2002 and even we had the internet. There was literally only one kid in my entire class who didn't have the internet/computer. It was commonplace by 2002, just still fairly primitive and slower and many people still may have had dial up.

Having said this, cell phones certainly were not common and they were a luxury. In 2002 it was common to have only one cell phone per family and the cell phones were literally just for calling, no texting or other functionality and they usually had those old green screens. My dad had one of these back then. It wasn't until around 2003 or 2004 that high school students started getting flip phones for themselves. In 2002, talking with friends on the home phone was by far the most common method and three-way calling was considered cool and popular too. MSN messaging was popular too.

I vaguely remember 2002. All I remember was being at my dad's friends' party for a newborn, while being at a playground with my dad. Although, I do think that my preschool memories were commonplace with 2002 and 2003 for me.

It still kinda was where I grew up. I lived in a very rural area back then. My parents had only just gotten it in 2000, and it still wasn't totally uncommon to see kids in my class not able to go online at their house in 2002. I would say it was about 50/50 or slightly more.

He was like "Choose one or the other, stop wasting my internet and phone money. Did you play this game, Dragon Ball Z: Goku's Legacy? It was a DBZ role playing game. I didn't play until 2003 but it came out in 2002.

In 2017, we're closer to 2031 than 2002 :o

2002 also had these major sporting events:

The 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah (February 8-24, 2002)

US President George W. Bush with the US Olympic Team at 2002 Winter Olympics opening ceremony (February 8, 2002)

The 2002 Winter Olympics was the second major sporting event held in the US after 9/11 (Super Bowl XXXVI was held just 5 days earlier in New Orleans, Louisiana). It was an important moment for the US in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The 2002 FIFA World Cup (hosted by South Korea and Japan, May 31 - June 30, 2002)

Brazil beat Germany in the World Cup final 2-0 for Brazil's 5th WC title (the most by any country). It was the first World Cup to be held in Asia, the first to be held on a continent other than Europe or the Americas, the last World Cup during which the golden goal rule was in force and the only World Cup to be jointly hosted by more than one nation as FIFA amended its statutes in 2004 to officially forbid co-hosting bids.

I can certainly relate to that. Every time I would try to get online back in the day, my parents would always need to use the phone and knock me off. The worst thing was when you were trying to download something, and then somebody would call you and knock you offline. That seemingly happened all the time back in the day, and it was so annoying.

Also, we only had a single computer in the living room back in 2002, and my mom would hog it most of the time and never let me get on anyway. I'd usually have to get up at like 7 in the morning so I could check my e-mails before she got on. Most 2017 kids wouldn't last ten minutes like that today!

Our computer was in my parent's room. My dad was on it most the time. I did get to use it sometime, once or twice a week or so, not very often. I used it to play Roller-coaster Tycoon, talk on MSN, check DBZ and Pokémon episode guides, and of course, video game cheat codes, including my Game Shark.  :D

I also downloaded stuff on Kazaa, can't remember what though. Probably Japanese DBZ clips haha.

I had two computers. The main computer was in my basement (it may have been in my parents room for a short period of time if I recall correctly, maybe when we just moved in) and the second computer was a very old one that had Windows 98 on it and it was in my sisters room and it didn't have internet. It was basically useless for other than playing the games that came with Windows 98.

I was only three years old in 2002. Although I can't remember much from that year, my memories started to become much clearer. I can remember seeing the television coverage of the Bali Bombings. My Mum actually went to Bali on a holiday just two years later and I remember that I didn't want her to go because of the bombings. I also have a random memory from 2002 of my Mum setting up the PS1 for me so that I could play it. :P

My Mum actually went to Bali on a holiday just two years later and I remember that I didn't want her to go because of the bombings. I also have a random memory from 2002 of my Mum setting up the PS1 for me so that I could play it. :P

PS1 and PS2....great times & memories with those two GODLY video game consoles 8).

When did you get XP? I think 2002 was the last year I was using 98.  :-[

The best thing about 2002 that it was the last year that VHS was still a force. Ahh, going to the video store to rent movies. 8)

You didn't have Windows 2000? I used that until I got XP. I think I got XP is 2003 so I was using Windows 2000 in 2002. We stopped using Windows 98 as our main machine in 2000 or 2001 and replaced it with Windows 2000.

Goku has always been popular.  8)

Holy sh!t. I did actually have that exactly in 02. It was from someone I think I forgot I knew. I wasn't as addictive to it but the start up screen and first level theme.

Its amazing how much Dragon Ball Z is associated with the Early 2000s.

We were still using Windows 98 until my parents finally got a new computer with XP on it 2004. Up to that point, we were still using the old Compaq that they got in 1999.

And yeah, that another thing I like about 2002 is VHS still being dominant over DVD, even if just barely. 2002 was just about the last year where I recorded a lot of shows off television on to VHS tapes too, so there's a lot of nostalgia there.

I remember in 1999, I thought to myself, "If there's a Windows 95 and a Windows 98, surely there must be a Windows 99". I told my dad I wanted Windows 99, but he told me it didn't exist; and then I lied about seeing it at school. He called out my bluff by taking me to Futureshop and showing me it wasn't there. ;D At least I got to go Futureshop and bought Mario Golf 64 while I was there.  8)

In 2002, I'm sure most my friends had Windows XP. Some had Windows 2000, and few had 98. I got XP in 2003.

Yeah, cell phones were fairly common by 2002.

The thing that was different back then is that most families just had a single cell phone per family. Most kids and teenagers did not have their own cell phones in 2002, unless they were 16 and could afford to buy their own. They were still a slight luxury item to an extent at that point. It wasn't really until the late '00s that you started seeing little kids with cell phones commonly.

I think mobile phone subscriptions overtook 50% in 2004 in Canada. I remember being a country stats nerd around that time and seeing this. Mobile phone adaption was faster in Europe and Asia. North America is spread out and sparsely populated, and we don't allow foreign competition in the telecom industry, so we'd be much slower to pick up on that stuff.

It depends on much you have. You can sell the whole stash for 20. That's what I plan on doing. 20 for the Pokémon stash and 20 for the Yu-Gi-Oh stash.

No point in going through the complications over their worth.

2002 is my throwback year for this year, so I'll be remembering it a lot. I didn't care for the first 3 months, but the year got better as it progressed. I remember playing a lot of Gamecube games. My favorites were Super Mario Sunshine and Star Fox Adventures. Music wise I mostly listened to hip-hop, and Nelly, Ashanti, and Eminem were popular that year. I also remember that year for the first American Idol, which Kelly Clarkson won. My favorite movies of that year were Minority Report, the Time Machine, and Spiderman. The year also ended on a bad note as my soon to be ex GF at the time ghosted on me (I didn't know it was a thing back then, but it's more common in today's dating world) right after Christmas. I didn't have any contact with her for about 2 weeks and we finally officially broke up about a week into the new year (as mentioned in the January 2003 atmosphere thread).

2002 is my throwback year for this year, so I'll be remembering it a lot. I didn't care for the first 3 months, but the year got better as it progressed. I remember playing a lot of Gamecube games. My favorites were Super Mario Sunshineand Star Fox Adventures.

I'm happy to see someone who wasn't a kid back then have a positive opinion about that game. It got sh*t on so much for a game that's actually pretty great and would probably get 10/10 today because they hand those out like candy.

I started Kindergarten in 2002, and then, I graduated Kindergarten in 2003. I really don't remember much other than the old Nickelodeon and Disney channel, and the old bulky desktop computers with the big back.

Back in Kindergarten and 1st Grade, the best days were Parachute Days 8). I miss my childhood...

I remember that, and there will also be some guy who pretends to be a monster or a bear outside the parachute.

Lol. The way my school did it was that there would be two kids outside the parachute initially lifting it on both sides and all of the kids inside would have to run to the other side of the parachute before the parachute comes down. Whoever isn't on the edge of the parachute when it comes back down goes on the outside and lifts the parachute, and the process continues until theres only 1 or 2 people left inside. Damn, just describing it just brings so many memories.

I remember playing it that way too but I remember playing it as Sharks and Lifeguards. You have the swimmers who are sat down outside of the parachute and waving the parachute with the lifeguards going around to monitor them. There are only one or two sharks in the beginning and their goal is to pull every swimmer under. The lifeguards are supposed to save the swimmers from going underneath, so they have to pull them out of the shark's grasp while the swimmers have to try to struggle through and hang on for dear life. If they let go of the parachute they instantly turn into sharks who have to look for more victims. That game was indeed fun. The bigger and stronger kids always made it hard and challenging. I think we played that game up until the sixth grade in middle school around 2009, in an after school program, and I remember my best friend was so rough in that game, and was so into it that he ended up pissing himself during the game because we were having so much fun and we had to stop because of it. Everyone was so angry at him. Everyone was into it, including the eighth graders who were so COMPETITIVE. LOL. That's my fondest memory of that game.  ;D

Yeah, I was still fairly young when Super Mario Sunshine came out at 15, but not a kid, and I've always loved that game. It's certainly the most unique game of the entire Mario library, but I think that gives it a certain charm. The only complaint you could have is that the tropical setting of the game gives the levels a certain lack of variety, but that's not a huge deal to me. It did have a lot of critics back during the early '00s, though.

Another thing I remember about 2002 is watching "Smallville". Even though it premiered in Fall 2001, most of the first season (best season imo) was in 2002. The first 3 or 4 seasons were good, but I stopped watching after that. I started watching from the pilot episode last night on Hulu. It's a good show, I've always liked the vibe of it with the characters, particularly Lana Lang, Clark himself, his step parents, and his two best friends in his school.

One thing I just remembered about 2002: The "Dell dude" and Jared from Subway were major spokesmen who have since gotten into legal trouble.

I had a lot of fun in 2002 8), hanging out with my friend playing video games, riding around. I was really into techno-trance around this time, also industrial metal like NIN and Fear Factory.

Yeah, I found those Dell Dude ads rather annoying. ::)

The year that 9/11 fully effected us, the economy crashed & entered recession in March and the Y2K era ended in spring.

We went from:

-WWF went from the Attitude era to WWE's Ruthless Aggression era with the Brand Split/Draft, name change & departure of The Rock

- Boy Bands & Teen Pop to Urban Pop marked by NSYNC, Backstreet boys and Britney Spears hiatus, Justin/Britney's break up, Justin Timberlake going solo and Christina Aguilera departing her teenybopper days for Dirrrty era.

-DVD's started getting noticed by lower class income families & really started the transition from DVD to VHS(Prior to this DVD was rarity),
-
Superhero craze began with Spiderman,

-The Rock went from top star of the Attitude era and biggest most popular wrestler of all time who had cameo in Mummy Returns in 2001 to full on lead Hollywood star with Scorpion King & it's record opening in 2002 based on his wrestling popularity alone.

-Fully transitioned from 5th to 6th generation of video games.
