Subject: Summarise each 2000s born person by year.

Written By: Longaotian00 on 08/24/17 at 6:45 pm

I thought it would be interesting considering I was born during this time so, Similar to the threads for the people born in the 80s and 90s, same goes for those born in the 2000s basically just summarise specific things for those born in each year.

Although, this might be a bit harder especially for those born in the latter years because a lot of the people born in the decade are still very young. :)

You'll have to wait until the next decade to summarize those born in the 00s. Right now you guys are young.

I haven't interacted much with 2002 and 2003 borns but based on what I've seen...they are a different world from me despite being only a few years younger.

However, I most certainly can't relate at all to people born after 2003. I think that despite the differences there will be a few similarities between me and a 2002 and 2003 born. After that....yeah, no.

That's basically the same to me. I feel so anxious whenever I see somebody born after 2003. To me (despite this being ageist), I see them as tech-savvy kids who obsesses over Minecraft, Geometry Dash, or any YouTuber that basically shares resemblances with PewDiePie.

It's only ageist if you think that you're better than them.

2000: I usually can relate to them most of the times.
2001: I can always relate to 2001 babies.
2002: I can definitely relate to people born in the same year as me.
2003: I can also relate to 2003 babies as well.
2004: I usually can relate to 2004 babies.
2005: I can sort of relate to them, although this is where I see some differences, I wouldn't call it big though.
2006: This is when the differences start to appear bigger, and I might have difficulties relating to them.
2007: Huge differences, it's usually difficult to relate to them.
2008: Usually cannot relate to them, especially when I'm in High School and they're still in their core childhood
2009: Little to no similarities, definitely cannot relate.

To be fair though I hardly have friends that were born after 2005.

I believe those born in 2000/2001 may be the last to remember cassette tapes. I remember that they still advertised cassettes like "Phil Collins Love Ballads" or other generic soft rock compilations on channels like Toon Disney, well until 2006 or so.

Nice! Being born in 2000, each consecutive year throughout the 2000s I obviously relate to less. This is basically mirrored for 90s babies aswell since I was basically born right between the two decades! :)

That there are 2000s babies here now is kind of blowing my mind :D

Welcome to all the new users!

As for me, I consider '94ers to be the same age as me, and there's almost no difference between me and '95ers. '96 is when I notice some differences but still very little. '97 is further away still, but "same age group" more or less. I haven't met anyone born '98 to be honest (except when they were kids). '99 is when I start feeling a bit old, but the last time I talked to one was when she was 14 and I was 20/almost 21, so that might explain it.

The 2000s babies I explained with the GIFs. ;D

The 2000s babies I explained with the GIFs. ;D

What about me, SharksFan99, Sir Rothchild, Tyrannosaurus Rex, TheKid99 and 1990s Baby, 2000s Kid?

I am a 1997 born and I can mostly relate with anyone born between 1995-1999.  ;)

I was mostly distant with the class of 2012 (1994 born) as a freshman and the class of 2018 (2000 born) as a senior because three year age gap seems drastic for me for some reason..

Nope (at least for Americans). Smartphone usage in the U.S. surpassed 50% in late 2012 and that's when 2007-08 borns were 3-5 years old. They wouldn't have "clear" memories of a world before smartphones took over.

Seems accurate to me. I would say those born in 2005 are the last who can possibly vividly remember at least one 2000's year (2009) depending on their memory and what month they were born. Age 3 is usually vague memories. I can't speak for everyone born in that year and after tho.

Yes, I am aware that people can remember when they were 2,3,4, however age 5 is when people actually become quite aware of what is actually happening in the world and are not considered little kids anymore. :) most people use this age btw

I haven't interacted much with 2002 and 2003 borns but based on what I've seen...they are a different world from me despite being only a few years younger.

We are a “different world” because someone born in 1999 and someone born in 2002 are in different stages in life. They aren’t really that different in the grand scheme of things tbh

How do you not relate to someone two years younger than yourself?

This! Yeah, 1999 and 2002 borns still had somewhat of a similar childhood. Both experienced the late 2000s and can remember the mid-2000s. They aren’t that different.

Exactly. The reason why they are different NOW is because they are in different stages in life. A 1999 born is probably in college and a 2002 and 2003 born is still in high school, so of course they’re gonna be a “different world” from each other. I feel like the main reason people say they’re a different generation from someone only three years younger is because they’re both really young and like I said, in different stages in life, but that will all change once they’re older. Yes, a 1999 born and a 2003 are apart of the same generation, so is a 1997 and a 2002 born and a 2000 born and a 2004 born. The only difference is, right now they are both in different stages in life. Just because you can’t relate to someone doesn’t always mean they’re from a different generation.

Well, there is going to be constant debate about that.

Obviously, since you guys were born in 2002 and 2003...you guys feel that way. However, many 1999 borns like myself don't feel the same way as you guys. Of course, we know that we're aren't 10+ years older than you guys and of course we had some similar childhood experiences but overall...we are still different....even if it's "not for long".

Heck, some 1996 borns feel the same way about us 1999 borns...I guess it's just how many people feel about their childhoods.

3 years is not a big difference no matter what year you were born. You'd have went to elementary school, high school and uni together. Childhood, teenagehood, young adulthood, adulthood, seniorhood all overlap.

If there were any significant differences in terms of people who are 3 years apart in age, Early Childhood would arguably be the biggest difference. Even though it's a developmental stage in life, you are completely influenced by the context of your surroundings. In most cases, you don't have too much of a say on what you're doing or how you interact with the persons/things around you, due to being so young. In other stages of life, you have much more of a say on things and you form your own identity. The differences become smaller and less noticeable.

I totally agree with everything. This is something that a lot of people don't get especially 80s folks. I always see a lot them saying they can't relate to anyone younger than them and they use those same reasons you mentioned.  They don't seem to realize that people can be in the same age groups and be in different stages of life. For instance, there are folks in their 20s who are married, have children, have a career or even own a place, and they would be in a different stage than those in their 20s who don't have one or any of those things. The same factor would also apply to those in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and so on who either don't have or never had any of those things compared to those who do.

Offtopic ish: I'm not a kid today but based on what I've gleaned, it seems like it goes in a cycle because Late Gen Z kid culture (Late 2016?-2020) might be getting boring and dull again like it was, as some would claim, in the Early Gen Z kid culture (Late 2006-2010?).

Late Gen Z kid culture seems dominated by endless TTGO reruns abound taking up everything else, The Emoji Moive, good shows getting cancelled left and right, etc. This seems like a comedown from Core Gen Z kid culture (2010-Mid 2016?) which may've been more vibrant.

I'm a 1999 born, I feel like my childhood is very similar to that of a 2002 born, I actually feel like those of us born in the late 90's have way more in common with those born in the early 00's than those born in the mid 90's.

Your surroundings can change this a lot though, because I started school in the 2005-06 school year with late 99 and early-mid 2000 borns even though I was born in January. I'm also the oldest between three siblings, my brother was born in 2000 and my sister was born in 2002, so of course I'm going to relate more to those born in the early 2000's than the mid 90's.

As someone born in the mid 90s, I might agree. Since neither of you really remember much of the early 2000s (heck, I don't remember them as sharply as someone born in the early 90s would), but would remember the mid and late 2000s. The early 2000s, as we discussed to exhaustion in older threads, really had a weird, crazy, "one of a kind" feel compared to the mid 2000s. I mean there were holdovers from the early 2000s still around in the mid 2000s, but on the whole, the mid 2000s seemed to have a very "rebooted" feel to them compared to the early 2000s. It's no wonder a whole lot of 90s/early 2000s shows were killed in 2004.

I have a fair amount of early 2000's memories, but most of them are pretty meaningless to me and most have nothing to do with the pop culture of the time with the exception of a Samurai Jack memory which scared me, lol, and a couple where I played video games such as Blinx: The Time Sweeper on original Xbox.

I relate most strongly to those born 1997-2002, which I realize most people born in my year (especially early 99) wouldn't have 2002, but reading my previous comment, you can probably tell why.

To be honest, I probably would have listed 1996 over 2002 (e.g 1996-2001), but that's because i'm actually closer in age with people born in 1996. The youngest 96'ers are only 2 years and 3 months older than me, while the oldest people born in 2002 are almost 3 years younger than me.

That's what I'm saying, most people my age wouldn't have had 2002, and 1996 is a more logical choice considering I'm only two years and two weeks younger than the youngest one, and I'm almost exactly three years older than the oldest 02'er, but I'm class of 2018 with both of my siblings being early 2000's babies, honestly, it probably is more like 1996-2002 for me, I've just had way more interaction with people born in 2002 than people born in 1996 with a lot of other factors as well.

I have a hard time breaking the generational barrier with some of my cousins. I was born in 1997.

On my dad's side, I have first and second cousins born in the mid 2000s to mid 2010s and I can't relate to them at all. We have about a more than 7 years gap and I can't relate to their different upbringings. I didn't even own a smartphone until I was about a young teenager, like 13 in 2010.

On the other hand, on my Mom's side a lot of my first and second cousins were born in the 1970's, and 1980's. I actually met my second cousin who fathers my niece who is 2 years older than me. He was born in 1966. Even, with my cousins born in the 1980s, we had a totally different upbringing as well.

From my experience, age makes the most difference when you are around the puberty age and then again when you are in your late teens/early twenties (college age).  The reason being is that a person's life and world changes so much so quickly during those times. I would say the four years between age 18 and 22 are four of the most crucial, defining years in a person's life. When you get into your late twenties, the ages which you can relate to broadens.  For me, I would say five years each way.  For the first time this year I am really starting to feel some distance between myself and early-mid twenties young professionals.

That's weird because it's been the opposite, in my experience. I have no problem talking with people who are 20ish at the moment. My boyfriend is 20, he was actually 19 for half the year haha. I find it difficult to relate to people who are university freshmen and sophomores (late teens), because they're still in the self-discovery/party all the time phase, and I've "been there done that". But people who are 20+ is not a big gap to me anymore, like a 4 year gap used to feel. I don't have a problem relating to people in their late 20s either. We're all baby adults basically. ;D

Generally, if a person is in their 20s, then I'm going to treat them as if they were the same age as me. Early 30s and late teens is stretching it, but I don't really see it as a huge gap anymore, not as much as I used to.

When I was 18, I would say anyone above 22 felt old, and anyone under 15 felt young. At 24, just about anyone 20-29 seems like "my age group".

Yeah you just gradually get older and your perspective keeps changing. When I was 25 I thought 20 was not that far from me, by the time you get to the end of your 20s, 20 seems like a baby tbh. I relate to any age, but late teens early 20s that is REALLY REALLY young and they could be very immature. Thats the biggest difference between being like mid 20s and 30 for me probably. I still related to the youngest adults in their late teens early 20s back then, but now idk it seems so insanely young. They were in high school a couple years ago, I was in high school like 12-16 years ago. I can't imagine people under 18 geez that's like a fetus pretty much.  ;D

Ok. While 13 years is always gonna be a big difference, far off in the future when we are in our 40s & 50s, I'm sure there would be a lot of stuff we would both remember and look back on, and we would feel really old by then especially considering there would be adults like 20 years younger than us. It's actually really scary but luckily that's very far into the future so theres no need to worry haha ;D

I agree with this.

Still being single and still working through my personal baggage, I don't live much different than I did at 25.  In fact I am way behind for my age due to personal circumstances so I fit in best with people who are a few years younger than me, many times better than people who are my own age.  However, at 25 I felt I could relate fairly easy to a 20 year old.  At 32, I can relate to 25 year-olds (my best friend is that age) but 20 might as well still be high school and I'm on a different wavelength than them.

I just turned 20 two months ago.  ;)
I was about to say this.. because sometimes I look at 29 year olds and realize how different and far apart we are. They are starting to settle down and I haven't even found myself. I was never into the party scene in high school and college, so I think I skipped that stage in life. I feel so immature compared to everyone else in their twenties.

It's weird if you think about it. Right now, I probably can't relate to anyone who's 13-17 but one day I probably might when our ages level off and we are all in our forties and fifties.

It's interesting how perception of time work. I asked my cousin who was 5 and pushing 6, if she was doing ballet. Her answer was that it's been a very, very, very long time ago. She was 4 and a half when she did ballet last time.  lol

And I still have a hard time believing her, when she talks about being a baby a long time ago, when it still felt like yesterday to me.

My 11-year-old cousin started using the iPad when he was only 4. He'd go tapping on the screen, bring it with him wherever he went, sometimes even stay up late at night playing on apps. Compare that to when I was 4 when iPhones and iPads weren't out yet. It's weird how much a 4-year difference could make. :o

From a 1993er perspective...

2000/2001 borns - babies I found annoying because they kept screaming

2002/2003 - babies I found cute because I could pick them up

2004-2006 - babies I was old enough to babysit (feed their bottle, change their diapers etc.). Yes I ate their baby food sometimes. It tasted good.  :-[

2007-2009 - babies who are my nephews and nieces

;D

Oh, I didn't realize that. But six year?  :o High school only lasts half of that where I live.

2000
First born in the millennium, they have a special exclusiveness about them. They are still a lot like '99 borns.

2001
The last to become adults and graduate in the teens of the 21st century. They were the last alive for 9/11.

2002
In the fetus or non-existant during 9/11, some lost their biological father due to the attacks. These guys were used to the Obama administration from 1st grade to 9th grade and likely don't remember much about Bush administration. They will be the youngest voters in the 2020 U.S. Election.

2003
Won't be old enough to vote in the 2020 U.S. Election. Late '99 borns are the oldest of their high school classmates.

2004
They will never attend high school with anyone born before 2000.

I give up now...

2005
They are the last group of people to start high school in the 2010’s, has never lived in a world without YouTube, were the first to never start elementary school in the 2000s, thus making them one of the first core 2010’s kids. They were the first to be born during the second half of the 2000’s.
2006
They are the last to become teenagers in the 2010’s, last ones born in the mid 2000s, has never lived in a world without Twitter. They were the last group of people to have any part of their childhood in the 2000s (Ages 3-12 but it depends on how you define it tho) and are probably the last who has any memory that took place in the 2000s, vague or not.
2007
They have never lived in a world without the iPhone. These folks are the ultimate 2010’s kids and because of this they are probably one of the most stereotypical 2010’s kids (along with 2008 borns) and they are probably the last who could possibly remember the 2010s in its entirety.

2008
They are also the ultimate 2010’s kids along with 2007 borns. They will be the ultimate 2020’s teens along with 2009 borns. These folks were the last to be born when George W. Bush was still president. They are also the first to be born during the Great Recession. They are the last group of people to exit their core childhoods in the 2010’s, and the last to start middle school in the 2010’s (depending on the district)
2009
They are the last to spend every single one of their core kid ages in the 2010’s (depending on what definition you use, I’m going by the 5-10 definition) they are the last to be born in the 2000s. These folks are the last who will be attending high school with people born in the mid 2000s, and they have never lived in a world without Windows 7. They could either be an ultimate 2010’s kid or a late 2010’s kid. They are the ultimate 2020’s teenagers along with 2008 borns. 2000
They were the last to be born in the 20th century. Because of this, they are often the last to be called millennials. They were the last to have a full elementary school year in the mid 2000’s, and probably the last that could be considered ultimate 2000’s kids. They were the last to have any part of their childhood in the early 2000’s.  Their age will always match the last two digits of the year (unless they reach age 100 or something) they will also turn 18 next year which will mean people born in the 2000s will start becoming legal adults.

They are the last to start elementary in the mid 2000’s, and the last to be in school before the iPhone was released. They were also the last to be born before 9/11, and the last to become adults and graduate in the 2010’s. They are often considered the first gen z birth year due to being the first babies born in the 21st century, but at the same time they’re also considered Y/Z cusps for being born before 9/11. They were also the last to technically exist in the 20th century depending on what month they were born (most 2001 folks we’re conceived in 2000, which is still the 20th century)
2002
They are the last to be in elementary school for every full late 2000s year (2007-2009) (they started in late 2007 depending on the district) and are the first to graduate and become adults in the 2020’s. As a 1999 born, it feels weird even thinking about the fact that people born after 2002...even exist :P.

Not trying to sound elitist, pretentious or whatever....it just feels weird. 2003 is the first year that I have vivid memories for most of it.

My cousin (born in 1997) and I both feel pretty much the same way...especially when talking to her sister who was born in 2004.

Not trying to sound elitist, pretentious or whatever....it just feels weird. 2003 is the first year that I have vivid memories for most of it.

My cousin (born in 1997) and I both feel pretty much the same way...especially when talking to her sister who was born in 2004.

It feels weird knowing that 1999 borns either are 18 or will very soon turn 18. :o

You were born in 1990...so you feeling that way is perfectly understandable.

No there's this thing where becasue 2011 is the 11th year of the 21st century it gets returned back to being 2000s while 2010 remains a 2010s year.

I'm very confused. So you're saying that 2011 is a 2000s year while the year before it is a 2010's?  ???

2000:

- Last to have their childhood start in the Early 2000s
- Predominantly Late 2000s kids.
- Last to be teens in the Early 2010s

2001

- Last who could remember the Early 2000s (2003).
- First people to turn 13 in Mid 2010s.
- Last who are predominantly 2000's kids.

2002

- Last people to vividly remember the Mid 2000s.
- Experienced their core childhood in the Late 2000s / Early 2010s.
- First to become of legal age (18) in the 2020s.

2003

- First people to experience childhood mostly in 2010s
- Last to have turned 13 in the Mid 2010s.

2004

- Last to experience any of their core childhood in the 2000s.
- First to become 13 in the Late 2010s.
- Last to have any memories of the Mid 2000s.

2005

- Have never lived in a world without Facebook or YouTube.
- First to experience start of core childhood in the 2010s.
- 2009 may be the only 2000s year they can remember vividly.

2006

- First to likely not have any vivid memories of the 2000s
- Last to turn 13 in the 2010s.
- Early / Mid 2010s hybrid-kids.

2007

- First to have never experienced their adolescence in the 2010s.
- Core 2010s kids.
- First to not have any vivid memories of a time when rock music was a dominant mainstream force.

2008

- First to likely not have any memories of the 2000s at all.
- Last year's election would probably be the first that they can remember.

2009

- Mid / Late 2010s hybrid kids.
- 2013 would probably be the first year they can vividly remember
- Have never lived in a pre-Windows 7 world.

Nice also would 2004 kids be Early 2010s kids? Or Mid?

My thoughts
2000- They were born in the beginning of the millennium and century also decade and will spend their life throughout the 2000s.

2001- When I think of the people in 01 I usually think that they're -1 year for example they're 16 in 2017 while 2000 people are 17 in 2017 (tried my best for this explanation)

2002- I have a cousin born in this year but i honestly don't really think of them.

2003- The people who turn +1 of age before us 2004 kids. (One time someone in my class who was born in 2003 made fun of someone who was born in 2004 which was pretty stupid of them)

2004- The year i was born and also is proudly to be born in this year :D also can relate to Friends who were also born this year.

2005- The 12 year olds of 2017

2006- I have a sibling born in this year,the only thing I can think of is that they're 11 that's it  :P

2007- They will be the first to be 13 in 2020 and i wish them good luck in middle school next school year.

2008- Good wishes to them also.

2009- The youngsters of people born in the 2000s.

So yup that's it  :).

I would personally consider someone born in 2004 to be an Early 2010s kid, since they were 6-9 years old between 2010-2013.

2000:
*Last to be born in the 20th century
*Last to be born in the Second Millennium
*Common cutoff for the Millennial generation

*Last to enter peak childhood before the VHS tape completely died out
*Last to enter peak childhood before the McCain v. Obama election
*Last to be at high school before gay marriage became legal

2001:
*Last to be born before 9/11 (some)
*Last to become adults and graduate high school in the 2010's
*First to be born in the new millennium (and this is probably why some sources end Millennials at 2000)
*Last to be at school before Web 2.0 started to actually become popular and a real "thing".

2002:
*Last to be at school when the Recession took place
*Last to vote in the 2020 election
*Last to probably remember VHS tapes even if those memories aren't that good
*Last to be born in the early 00's (debatable)
*Last to be at high school during the time of the Trump v. Hillary election
*Last to probably have good memories of life before iPhones.

2003:
*Last to be at school at the time of the McCain v. Obama election
*Last to be born in the early 00's (debatable)
*Last to become teenagers in the mid 10's
*Last to be born before Web 2.0

2004:
*Last to be at school by the time the 00's ended
*A cutoff place for the Millennial generation according to some sources (but I really don't think that Gen Y should go on for that long)
*Last to spend peak of childhood before the whole thing about mass shootings started escalating even more (Chardon, Aurora Theater, Sandy Hook, etc)
*Last to be born in the first half of the 00's
*Last to probably have good memories of a time before the Nickelodeon logo changed

2005:
*Last that would be in high school by the time this decade is over.
*Last to be in middle school during the Trump v. Hillary election
*Last to be born before Web 2.0 really became popular (acknowledged in Time's Person of the Year 2006 magazine)

2006:
*Last to be at school before the whole thing about mass shootings started to get worse
*Last to have peak childhood before the "Death of Saturday Morning Cartoons"
*Last to vote in the 2024 election
*Last to be born in the mid 00's
*Last to become teenagers by the time this decade is over.
*Last to remember a time before Bin Laden's assassination
*Last to be in peak childhood before this decade really started to get cynical.

2007:
*Last to be in peak childhood before the Confederate flag became an issue of "is it heritage or is it hate"
*Last to be in peak childhood before gay marriage became legal
*Last to probably remember a time before Colorado and Washington legalized recreational marijuana

2008:
*Last to enter peak childhood before the Trump v. Hillary election
*Last to be born during the Bush 43 presidency
*Last to be at school in the time of the Crimean Crisis.
*Last to have good memories probably of a time before smartphones started becoming popular along with hashtags.
*Last to be able to go to middle school in the 10's
*Last to be able to legally consume alcohol in the US in the 2020's (in other countries, it would be 2011, and in Germany, it would be 2013)

2009:
*Last to probably remember a time before this decade really started to get cynical (Crimea, Elliot Rodger, Michael Brown, Ferguson, etc)
*Last to be born in the 00's
*Last to be at school in the first half of the 10's

I was born in 2004 and I vividly remember seeing bin laden alot of the news after his assassination. (In 2011)

I have noticed that there are differences with technology year-by-year, e.g. people my age, when we were 12, had BlackBerry's, and the next year who were 12 had iPhones, and so it took quite a turn quickly lol. Fashion as well. When I was 12 (year 7 or 6th Grade), there were loads of emos in the final year (year 11 or 10th Grade), but none in our year.

Those born from 2001-2003 are hybrids, 2001 leans 2000s and 2003 leans 2010s. 2002 doesn’t really lean one way or another. They’re core hybrids.

That's true, they are all are; however, I don't think it will matter in the end considering those in the first half of the 00s will be/already are nostalgic about the decade. So far, I have seen some of you reminisce about 00s anyway even though it's mainly the second half.

I agree with this. I think it's pointless how people talk about decade kids because as long as you actually remember it, then it doesn't matter whether if you're considered a 90s or 2000s kid or whatever

I know it is. If you honestly think about it, the 00s people DO remember the decade even though they were kids. They obviously don't recall the world/political events except for the 2008 election, but they remember the games, movies, TV shows, music, fashion (Yes, kids do pay attention to that), etc.

Too bad that the 9-year-old was banned, because I bet they would've had some awesome memories from the 2008 election.

Yeah, that was pretty easy to figure out. Most 9-year-olds don't start out their posts by saying hey I'm 9 years old.

His behaviour was suss as well. On Popedia (my forum), he said that inthe00s "wasn't as good as it was a few years ago", yet when he first came on here, he said it was his first time visiting the forum.

2002 borns were the last to be in elementary school during the core 2000’s, since we started in 2007 which I personally think is the last core 2000’s year

Yup. Although in NZ 2002-early 2003 borns entered Primary school in February 2008 which is technically still core 2000s aswell.
I started in February 2005.

Wouldn't it be 2005 since that was when 2002 borns reached three? We were two in 2004 which is a bit too early for pre-school.

No. I mean that 2004 folks would have been the last to be in school during the core 00s. That's when they began preschool.
