2007 did have its own atmosphere. It was very definitive.

I would agree.  2007 had its own vibe. Musically, synth-hop was already popular that year but electropop had not really arrived yet.  That year was probably the peak of the "ringtone rap" phenomenon and it probably peaked with "Crank Dat Soulja Boy"  The iPhone came out but it was something that tech geeks and rich kids had and everyone else was envious of it (and a lot of people didn't jump on the bandwagon due to the first the first iPhone didn't support 3G).  The most popular and trendy phone to have was one of those Motorola Razr phones.  Gosh, I remember how sleek and futuristic they seemed compared to the previous generation flipphones.  Emo/scene was at saturation point that year. and MySpace was at its peak.  2007 was the big year of the Mac vs PC ads because Vista had come out and it was so unpopular.  YouTube really took off that year as well.

You can't forget these.  These were specific to 2007 and wouldn't have likely been popular any other year.

The album yes but the song was mostly popular in 2007.  Also radio stations in my area didn't play it until after the June 2007 re-release.

I think 2007 was quite unique, you have even said yourself that there was a shift in late '06, so then how come you say it was the same?

I did not say late 2006, other members on this forum said that, not me. I said a small shift in 2006 in general, which actually had its roots in late 2005 and High School Musical premiering in early 2006 was evident of that (the start of the downfall of Disney). As well as songs like Sexy Back and Promiscuous in spring/summer 2006. So 2007 was just like 2006. And this was a small shift, not a big one. The huge shift happened in 2008 which led to the 2010s.

To me they felt the same personally. Unless we are talking about my personal life, in that case it was a little different because by late 2007 I was in junior high school and in 2006 I was still in elementary school.

Looking back from now, I think late-2005 to about mid-2008 were the same for the most part. Many people on this forum say that 2005 was the same as 2004, but I disagree. Maybe only up until spring of 2005 could be together with fall of 2004, but that's about it.

I feel it's similar for the 2010s. Mid-2015-2017 and maybe 2018 feel quite different from the rest of the decade.

Yeah same here. Not hugely different but there is a slight difference. Early 2015 is feeling a little distant now.

Totes, and in 2007 nerd culture was pretty much at its zenith:

- Memes were prevalent on the internet but had not really spun out of control (it was really limited to stuff like lolcats, "shoops")
- Anime was huge with the kids, and I mean huge (remember this is around the time shows that are still hits now were coming out: Naruto, Tengen Tappa Gurren Lagan, Haruhi Suzumiya, CLANNAD...you get the idea)
- Emo and scene music
- The triumphant return of Doctor Who, which was successful enough to be popular even in the U.S.
- A lot of Eurodance music and associated YouTube videos featuring anime characters dancing (or alternatively, AMVs)

And finally, and thing that is almost the most significant part of 2007: nerd culture is beginning to go mainstream (which I would say peaked around 2011). So that cheerleader you had a crush on in high school suddenly knows what lolcats are and is using memes (even if she is not doing so correctly - yes, this happened to me).

2007 was the peak of the 00's culture. Everything that had been building up during the past decade seemed to pool around this year and then gradually fad as the transition to the 2010s commenced. The album sales race between Kanye West and 50 Cent was probably one of the most talked about HipHop battles ever. HipHop DX talks about the shift in the course of HipHop that year here. Even those who didn't listen to much HipHop joined the speculation of which 00s juggernaut would win 2007. Several artists became big that year like Gwen Stefani with her hit "Sweet Escape" single, Nelly Furtado with "Promiscuous", Justin Timberlake with "Give it to Me", Rihanna with "Umbrella" and Lupe Fiasco with "Superstar". This was the year cartoons like Flapjack, El Tigre, Phineas n Ferb, Valerian and Lareline, Wayside, and Storm Hawks debuted. Avatar and Kappa Mikey became huge too. iCarly replaced Drake and Josh as the next big Nick sitcom hit. Hannah Montana kickstarted Miley Cyrus' career. The 7th generation console game consoles began to pickup steam with the Wii in the lead with games like Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports, and the Xbox 360 with CoD 4 and Assassin's Creed, both which revolutionized console gaming in various ways. The PS3 had Uncharted, but it was clear at the time that it wasn't going to steal any thunder from the 360 and Wii, and certainly wasn't going to match the success of the PS2(which was still outselling the PS3 weekly) especially after that disasterous Sony E3 Sony press conference.

Those artists you mentioned were already big before 2007... 2007 wasn't even their peaks, they just came back with hits. Plus Hannah Montanna premiered in 2006.

2007 was a weird year in that the first few months felt like the core/mid 2000s and then went on this weird
route with Iphone/ Chris Beniot murder, very weird feeling year, lots of 2000s things were started to die off at this point.
Facebook got really popular in March 2007, altho Myspace was still king.

The vibe started feeling less and less 2000s as the months went on

Late 2006 to mid-2008 is the era I feel you're talking about, which would be early high school for me :D

I have somewhat of a soft spot for that era now despite how much I hated it back then. It has a childhood innocence to it even though I was 14/15 then.

so many things weird happened

Iphone, Beniot killing himself, 2000s tv shows ending one by one ( Sopranos, King Queens, hell even TRL was suppose to be canceled in Feb of that year),  ps2 , gamecube and xbox 1 dead, Facebook becoming super popular in March of that year,SD tvs being sold in Best Buy 0%, Economy slowing down, Britney Spears shaving her head

And then you had Timbalands jams  + all this tech making the year feeling dark and digital,  and I mean it when I say 2008 feels more 2000s
than 2007 did

I agree. I think the fashion of that year also contributed to it's dark atmosphere. Emo fashion was probably at it's peak. Also, I just remember seeing lots of monotone colors such as black, beige, gray and white. Virginia Tech happened that year as well.

Hmm, I do think 2007 was one of the more unique years of the 2000s. Genres such as French house and Electro house were quite popular that year. Songs such as "UFO" and "D.A.N.C.E" seem really unique to 2007 and the sound wasn't really popular in any other year. 2007 was also the peak of Myspace and flip phones and it was the first full year of Facebook being available to the public. It was pretty much the only year that synthop and snap rap were popular in the same year. The Kanye West/50 Cent Hip Hop battle marked a significant shift in the direction of hip-hop. Music overall had a sound in 2007 that wouldn't have been popular in 2005-06 or 2008-9

By 2007 in the U.S people couldn't wait for Bush to leave office but unlike 2008, there wasn't yet a general consensus on who would be the party nominees for the 2008 election.

Overall 2007 does have a distinct identity. I turned 12 that year and I graduated primary school. It was a pretty unique year in my personal life also. I would say it was the my child interests evolved into teenage interests.
